Airport works - internet doesn't?

I recently picked up an iBook G4 running 10.4 for a family member. I checked it out at my home on my personal Airport Express and it worked flawlessly. He took it home, bought an Airport Express, and had it configured at the Apple Store so it would be plug and play when he got home.
Surprise surprise, Safari says "You are not connected to the Internet".
I already had him verify his AE was selected as the preferred network, and made sure he reset his cable modem so he had an IP address assigned to the AE. Still can't connect. I've been trying to walk him through everything to make sure he has things set properly but since I'm on 10.6.8 my control panes don't compare to his. I've been searching in vain for screen shots/caps that have the 10.4.9 Network control panels so I can walk him through but I can't find the proper ones. Finally, this is the first time that Apple's help library is absolutely unhelpful. Go check out the "Network Diagnostics" info sheet for 10.4 if you want a laugh.
1. Does anyone know what could be going on with this thing?
2. Is there a 10.4 networking setup guide anywhere?

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components. The fact that this AirPort is being used with a different modem than when it was tested at the Apple Store is most likely the issue.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Connected to airport, but internet doesn't work

last night my internet worked fine. i use wireless with airport and this morning when i work up my computer from 'sleep' the wireless network was still connected but i'm unable to use the internet at all. any ideas of what is wrong or what to do? i've tried a lot of different things and nothing has worked. please help!

Your wireless router is connected to a cable or DSL modem? Did you power the modem off/on? Power it on/off, then power the wireless router off/on.
Are the lights on the modem flashing as you would expect?
Is there a standby button on the modem that could have been pushed by mistake?

  • G3 Lombard Airport Works, Connect Doesn't

My daughters G3 PowerBook with an Aria Extreme card shows connection to the airport but not to the internet. In checking the Network settings they are all identical to my G4 PowerBook which does work, and the Airport icon in the task bar on the G3 shows good connection.
At startup the airport doesn't automatically connect. I have to select the network.
When checking Network Status on the G3 it says that "Airport is connected to the network PrivateNtwk. Airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet." Clicking on "connect" from that screen attempts to load Internet Connect, but it seems an infinite loop is encountered.
Attempting to start up Internet Connect from the hard drive has the same response - or lack thereof. Reload software, I guess?
Help, please? And thanks in advance.

    333 G3 PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

really just leaving a conclusion for anyone that may stumble upon this:
    reinstalled 10.3 upgraded to 10.3.9 - didn't fix it
found that the computer was running hot - really hot to the touch under the keyboard and the fan wasn't running. Figured I would dive into that tomorrow.
Followed a thread on throwing out airport preferences, did that. Didn't fix it but I would still recommend it.
Checked software updates and found that Airport needed to be updated.
Did the update and doh! seems to work fine now.
Fan was blowing, too, during all the updates (9) being installed. That was good news.
Good luck to all and what an incredible community this is here. Thank you thank you thank you.

  • Airtunes works, internet doesn't?

I recently moved my airport from one cable connection in my house to another. the internet was working fine before i moved it. i moved it closer to my stereo in order to use the airtunes feature, which is working beautifully with a steady green status light on the airport. i know that the internet signal is good because i've connected via the ethernet wire that connects the modem to the airport. i've attempted resetting the airport, unplugging the modem and the airport and replugging them in various sequences and lengths of time. i've also used airport setup assistance, all to no avail. i would very much appreciate any assistance with this matter.

Agreed - seems impossible. I still think the underlying problem is most likely a misconfigured Airport Express or a connection to the ISP that has not been properly reset. But when all other possibilities have been exhausted, and since this Airport Express was previously working perfectly with the same modem in the same house...
    In your situation:
Since you have been assigned a static IP address (and presumably you have also been supplied with the required subnet mask, router/gateway IP address, and domain name server IP address(es)) - you need to run the Airport Admin Utility, select your Express, click Configure, click the Internet tab, select to "connect using ethernet" and "configure manually", then enter all these parameters into the fields provided, then update settings to the Airport Express. As for your Macs, they should all still be configured to obtain an IP address automatically using DHCP in System Preferences->Network->Show Airport->TCP/IP tab.

Voicemail is left at your carrier's server. That will continue to work unless you report your iPhone as lost or stolen with your carrier.
You may never find it again and you can't if the iPhone remains offline or out of service which means the iPhone is powered off or doesn't have cellular reception.

  • Files deleted from the Library and now internet doesn't work?

    Hello,
I'm new here and this is probably going to sound dumb but... my father deleted some files from the Library by mistake and now internet doesn't work in his computer. Everything seems normal, but the webpages don't load (we tried lots of pages and 3 browsers). If you try to update any software it can't connect to the internet either.
He reinstalled the system (it's Mountain Lion, I think) but it didn't worked (it was a partial reinstallation, without losing the data). He also tried restarting and pressing CMD-R but nothing happened.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Thank you so much in advance! (and sorry for any typos, English is not my native language)

Hello Eleone, & a warm Welcome!
So what exactly isn't working or any messages you get?
    Does Mail still work?
    Might try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

  • Wifi works perfect on iMac, internet doesn't

    Hello everybody
i'm having a quite frustrating problem. The iMac details are on the picture above.
Maybe it is a cause of the problem I don't know, but a week ago I updated to Yosemite. Since three days, at some random moment the internet stops working.
First thought: there is something wrong with the router or with the modem. Restarting them both didn't change anything. The only thing that worked was restarting the iMac (something I dislike, it's very 'windowsish') but since yesterday that results in working internet for 2 minutes or nothing and the internet stops working again.
Also good to know: the internet on the two other macs on the network works fine, the same for the internet on phones or iPad (which I'm using to post this message). So the internet and wifi works fine on all devices except the iMac. So what's broken? Something with the internetboe something with the wifi? I can assure the wifi on the mac works properly. The sign gives full wifi reception and I can handle Sonos from the iMac, which uses the wifi network.
So it seems to me that there is something wrong with the internet on my iMac. It's also not just Safari, cause firefox and chrome doesn't open pages neither.
The network assistent can't help me either cause it just suggest to restart modems and routers (what I already did different times). I tried to find solutions in other discussions but fixtures they suggested there didn't work. People mentionned things with the keychain acces to reinstall passwords, to make new locations in the network preferences, I followed multiple fixtures: same result didn't work.
Hoping somebody can help me, thanks.

I have an AT&T M-Cell that gives 5 bars, got full-strenth wifi. Same wi-fi that my computer uses, that my Kindle uses.  So not capacity issue. but my Internet on phone drops out continuously and frequently, any app that uses internet doesn't work at all. Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • I am connected to wifi but Internet doesn't work.

I am connected to wifi but Internet doesn't work. Software updated and settings reset. Still no luck. I pod touch

Despite the connection indication you may not really be connected to your WiFi network.
Your router may not have given your iPod a valid IP address. To check on this go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the ">" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address shown starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix for this can be as simple as restarting your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPod (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

    Hi, KK93.
Sometimes a simple power cycle of the router and Mac can resolve the issue.  However, try the steps in the article below to troubleshoot the Wi-Fi issue with your MacBook.

  • Airport Admin rescan doesn't work?

I have two iMacs (500Mhz/400Mhz), 10.4.3, Airport Admin (4.1.1), Snow ABS.
Every two or three days, I lose connection to the to the ABS(i.e. the w-network I set up). Airport Admin doesn't find it on a Rescan or Other, however I can still create a C2C network. An ABS power-on/off sometimes works, occasionally I have to do a hard reset/reload (yuk!).
I can't seem to find the cause.
What is strange is that the Airport Admin Rescan doesn't work on the 400Mhz iMac, but it does on the 500Mhz and the software is the same?
    Help appreciated!

For the Airport Admin Utility "rescan" function to work, the Mac must have a fully functional connection with the Base Station. Performing a "rescan" should almost never be necessary in the first place, and it will only succeed if the underlying problem (eg a dropped wireless connection) gets fixed spontaneously before you click on the "rescan" button. In all likelihood, the "500MHz iMac" is able to successfully reconnect after a wireless connection failure (thus rescan eventually finds the Airport Base Station) whereas the "400MHz iMac" does not. Another possibility - the 400MHz iMac was never connected to your own Base Station in the first place, and instead was connected to the unprotected wireless network of one of your neighbors.
The real question in all this - why are your Macs losing their connection in the first place? The most common reason - radiofrequency interference from neighboring wireless networks or other devices (like portable phones and microwave ovens) that share use of the same 2.4GHz frequency. Sometimes this can be helped by changing the channel the Base Station transmits on to one that is less subject to interference (channel 1 or 11 are good choices to start with). The channel selection setting is found under the Airport tab of the Airport Admin Utility.
