Alias to External Drive Crashes Finder
I have an alias in my ~/Movies folder that is linked to a folder on my external hard drive. The problem is that sometimes when I follow the alias the Finder quickly crashes and then relaunches. After it has done that it works fine when I try again. I have even tried deleting the alias and creating a symbolic link in zsh but that just gives the same problem.
The drive is 1TB, HFS+ Journaled, and I know it's not fragmented because it's a new drive. I just copied the files over a few days ago.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this annoying bug?
Disk Utility shows disk as being repaired or not needing repair suggests the disk structure is okay and using Disk Warrior to create a new directory suggests the problem isn't a directory. So that leaves...permissions? I wouldn't think that would cause a finder crash. A malformed icon maybe? a damaged .DS Store file? a damaged desktop directory? A funky external drive perhaps.
The obvious quick fix is to wipe the drive - I'd go so far as to partition it first. Of course if you have important files to remove that may not be an acceptable option, you'd want to move files first.
Here's a thought. There are several Finder replacements/adjuncts: Pathfinder and Forklift for example. Why not try downloading these programs and get one of them running before you plug in the drive. The Finder crashes, but will these programs play nice? If so, you should be able to take a look at what pops up when the disk is mounted - look at the desktop and any window(s) that open from that drive. If there are any custom icons on the files, remove them. Delete the .DS Store files, etc. See if that works. If nothing else, you can copy important files to another drive or burn a CD/DVD to save the important stuff before you format the drive.

External drive crash.. need to export from ipod to itunes
hi,
I was storing my itunes library for an ipod touch on an external drive due to space issue. This external drive crashed this yeek and I would like to restore all my music on itunes by exporting my current ipod library to itunes.
Can i do that? how?
Thanks a lot!If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from an iPod. A few are advertised as iPod Touch compatible, here are some you can begin your research with:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible) -
10 3.9 - external drive crashes PB when connected by USB or FireWire
Subject says most of it... "10 3.9 - external drive crashes PB when connected by USB or FireWire"
Details: I have one external drive which, when connected to my PowerBook via either FireWire or USB, causes the computer to lock up with the message: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." The same thing happens whether the drive is there on bootup or if it is connected later.
The drive worked fine until yesterday, when I stupidly installed Windows Media Player even though the internal drive was almost full. It took a while, but I discovered that disconnecting this particular external drive made everything work again, though slowly.
Then I freed up 15GB on the internal drive, and everything works normally _unless that drive is attached. Another drive connected the same way works fine.
I have searched around on this message but have yet to find the way out. I did figure out what the first question will probably be, so here's the answer:
The "kernel panic message" each time seems to be the date and time and then "localhost /usr/libexec/panicdump: Error (-1) setting variable - 'aapl,panic-info'"
Where should I start?
Thanks.
15" Powerbook Mac OS X (10.3.9) External drives connected via USB or FireWireStill hoping for some sort of advice here... Have tried many approaches but can only confirm that simply connecting that particular drive (or enclosure?) always gets an immediate shutdown.
Thanks for anything,

My iMac does not see the new Toshiba external drive in Finder or Disk Utility. How can I get it to see the drive?
From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
Reset the NVRAM.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive is malfunctioning. -
OK, this may have been posted before, but I am not scrolling through a bajillion threads to find out:
I run i Tunes on my PC and kept all music and image files on a Maxtor external drive. It crashed, and in the raw data transfer, ALL the files were recovered except for the i Tunes AAC/MP4 files (13gb--I was not pleased). Before I send it off to an expensive data recovery outfit, does anyone know why these files wouldn't recover?I doubt that anything would have happened on the mac without his specific permission. Unless your friend opened up Disk Utility and altered a whole bunch of settings?
Try connecting the drive to the Mac and right click on the drive and "Get Info" and see how much free space there is. Then, connect it to your PC and check to see how much free space there is. That way, you'll know whether the data has been physically removed from the drive OR if it's just hidden for the time being (for whatever reason).
EDIT: Updated to reflect that I too have Leopard

I searched all over and could not find a similar situation. Suddenly today my Finder starts to crash. I was listening to iTunes - the songs reside on a LaCie 2bid RAID connected via Firewire 800. I turned off the drive and I get the device removal error and Finder suddenly pops up. I tried different ports first - 800, 400 and USB. Same thing. I have the MacBook Pro Intel version (Leopard 10.5.2) - I removed all USB and Firewire devices and rebooted. Same thing.
Of note, I could open the programs that are on the dock, and while the iTunes was running, I could still see the files on the drive.
Next I tried to remove the com.apple.finder.plst file - that did not work.
I have two other LaCies - a rugged and the old d2. Those behaved the same way - Finder crashing. The Console error says "Bus Error" and repeats every second when the drive is attached.
The last thing I tried was a Fujitsu drive in some external case I got from New Egg and that drive connected just fine. No crashing, and I can access files.
I downloaded and installed nothing in the past few days, and the LaCie was working fine. As I said, it just started to do this on its own.
Any ideas? If the LaCies are a problem, I need to find a way to get to my data!
Thanks.Hmm. I wonder if the problem is related to the Knowledge Base article that Apple recently published (it is one of the strangest I have ever seen). See it here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307502
It does involve Finder crashes and external drives, but the drive name causing the problem discussed is the startup drive, as given in the Sharing Prefs. Worth a look I think.

Copying to and from external drive causes Finder Freeze
I recently purchased a Shintaro USB HD dock to archive my many Gigs of Video footage.
I plug it all in and powered up without problems. Plugged a SATA disk into the dock it showed up (it was previously formated in an FW drive)
The drive showed up on the desktop and the files on it were there as well. When I try to either copy files to or from the dock the copy window comes up works for about 40% of whatever file I'm copying and then Freezes.
I've tried several disks and all do the same.
I cannot relaunch the finder, I cannot stop the process in Activity monitor, all I can do is power down, restart and try again.
I have tried using both a USB hub and hooked direct to the USB card in my PowerMac but the same thing happens everytime.
When I look at the external drive it has all the icons there but all the files are Zero Bytes.
Anybody got any ideas ?Hi Brett,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Use Disk Utility to Repair the external drives.
While still in Safe Mode, move these files to the Desktop...

External Drive crashed-how to restore from Time Machine?
I've been using TM to back up my internal, as well as an external drive. The external has been acting a bit flaky the past week or so, and I think it just bit the dust. How do I go about just restoring the data that was on it to a new external HD? I don't want to affect the internal HD at all. TIA.
Do not use exactly the same name for the new drive. Once your replacement drive is properly formatted, connected, and mounted, turn TM off and just open a Finder window and +Enter Time Machine.+ Navigate to the last backup before the old drive died, and select your computer name in the Finder's sidebar.
That should produce a list of folders representing both the internal and external drives. Select the external and click the "gear" icon in the Finder sidebar. Select +Restore <item> to ...+ and you'll get a prompt where you can select the new drive as the destination. The restore will, of course, take a while.
Be warned that when your turn TM back on, it will back-up everything on the new drive, so it will be lengthy and take a lot of room on your TM drive. You cannot prevent this, unfortunately. -
Server's network drive crashes Finder.
Hi all,
Im having a problem where intermittently, trying to open a folder on a home server's networked (AFP) drive is crashing Finder and forcing me to do a hard reboot. force quitting finder DOES NOT fix it. I click on the server on the lefthand side in finder, and then on a folder ON the server, and it hangs and gives me the pinwheel.
Here is the Finder crash log- I hope someone can decipher it for me.

Cannot See FW800 External Drive in Finder (other Mac confirms is there)
I cannot see an external drive connected via Firewire 800, yet it is definitely there from two tests: 1) when I disconnect it I get the typical warning of not ejecting first; and 2) from another Mac on the network, when logged into this Mac, I can see and access the drive in that Mac's Finder. Seems weird that the other Mac can see it connected to this Mac, but the Finder on this Mac cannot. Any tips/suggestions appreciated!
I've got several drives from OWC, some using the Hitachi drive and two with Seagate drives. Most of them are FW800 or what they call Quad interface (esata, FW800, FW400, USB2). I'm not aware of any other reports of problems with OWC drives. OWC does have great tech support both at their site: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm and by telephone: http://eshop.macsales.com/Service/contact/
I move them around quite a bit to different Mac's with Leopard and Snow Leopard without a problem. Since you said the drive shows up on other Mac's (running SL?) I suspect a problem with your OS or the FW800 port on your machine (could be hardware or driver related). I'm assuming that the drive does mount properly in FW400 and USB2, right? Also, I'm assuming that you have already used Disk Utility to Repair your boot drive's permissions.
Just for drill, I always create a temporary admin user account to verify that a problem is actually in the OS and not some left over code in my user account.
If you do this, and the problem continues in the new account I'd make sure you have a bootable backup and look at re-installing SL from the boot disc (it will automatically do an "Archive and Install). I like this explanation of the changes with the SL installer:

Hope this helps. -
Can't see external drive in Finder
Hi all - I have been using 2 external drives with my Mac with no issues, but suddenly I can't find them in Finder when I plug into my Mac. I have tried changing the USB cable and different ports and I have clicked the 'external drive' box in Finder preferences. I can see the discs in Disk Utility however. Does anyone have any idea how I could fix this ?
Thanks in advance !Might be corrupted desktop and Finder preferences ..
Disconnect the external drive.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy and paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.desktop.plist file to the Trash.
Same for ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac, connect the drive. Go to Finder > Preferences > General
Make sure: External disks is selected. -
Connecting external drive crashes iMovie 8 - Apple please fix this!
If I have external drives connected when I start iMovie 8 it will crash when it tries to index them.
Also if I have no drives connected and iMovie 8 running, the program will crash as soon as I connect a drive.
Apple, please fix this! I need to use external drives for storing of my videos. Are your external drives formatted as Mac OS Extended / HFS+ ..? They should be.
If they aren't, you'll have to remove whatever's already stored on them, and then re-format them using Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. You can then put back what was stored on them.
(P.S: I have NO crashes using iMovie '08 and any correctly-formatted external FireWire drives. I don't use external USB drives, as they're not fast enough for the sustained read/write speeds which video requires.) -
External drive crash, disk utility unable to repair
I have a 250GB LaCie external disk. I use it to store files that I use with Final Cut. Unfortunately I had a Final Cut crash while the disk was running (or maybe it was the external disk that crashed). This has caused my disk to cease operation. Mac OS recognises it and suggests a repair but disk utility cannot repair it. Is there a way I can recover any of the files from the external disk?
Disk Warrior is known to work much better. http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/index.html

External Drive crash on Macbook Pro
I don't know which category I should put this on. I wish somebody can help me.
My friend has an external hard drive - 500 GB, FAT 32. He actually uses a PC. He connected his hard drive to a Macbook Pro (Leopard). After get it back, he found nothing in his hard drive but .trash and .spotlight-V100 as hidden files. However, it still says that he has 450 GB on the hard drive.
What he is doing now is blaming all problem to be Mac's fault.
Do you guys have any idea what is the cause of the problem and hopefully how to bring those data back?
Thank you a lot!!!I doubt that anything would have happened on the mac without his specific permission.

External drive crashed, can see in Linux but cannot copy everything to new drive?
My itunes library lived on a Networked drive that stopped working. I have removed the drive from it's enclosure and have successfully powered it up on a linux box, to access the files. I attempted a graphical copy of the folders.
It seems that a lot of the itunes Library copied over using drag & drop, however a majority did not, and I think it is M4A format or a hash tag files that do not come over.
I can search and find the folders and files, so they are there. Howewer with a 10K song + library this will take forever to do artist by artist.
Has anyone experienced this, or is there an easier way I'm not finding?
Appreciate the helpUse SyncToy 2.1 to transfer the files. Unlike the Windows copy function it can carry on working even when there are individual files that it can't copy.
