All my external Hard Drives stopped showing up in both Finder and Disk Utility

Hello there.
i have this strange issue that occured just out of nowhere without me (knowingly) having contributed anything to it.
yesterday i launched my iMac and my external firewire drive wasn't showing up in neither the finder nor on the desktop. i instantly thought about a hard drive crash, but soon tried other things to evaluate (or not) my guess.
for instance, i unplugged the drive waited a few minutes before i plugged it in again. since this iomega drive is also equipped with a regular usb port i also switched cables and tried connecting it via the iMac usb sockets as well as via an usb hub without any luck. the drive still won't show up. so i launched the Disk Utility, to see if the drive needs some checking/repairing, but to my surprise it wasn't showing in Disk Utility either.
thus far i only considered this to be an issue with only this particular external drive, but when i eventually switched on a 2nd external drive (this time an usb drive i use for Time Machine) that drive also refused to show up in either the Finder or the Disk Utility app.
curious as i was, i then fired up a 3rd and 4th external drive and now had all 4 drives running at the same time. none of which were showing up, just as if they weren't even connected with the iMac.
this strikes me as more than odd. i've heard about hard drive failures and crashes. they just occur over time. maybe and under some very strange coincidences it is possible that two external hard drives quit their jobs at the very same time, but seriously .... 4 of them?? i hardly think so.
well, maybe it's the iMac's usb/firewire controller that's causing the trouble, i thought. but then again, my other connected devices (iPhone, iPad, Printer, Scanner, eyeTV) are functioning and get detected just fine as far as i can tell.
i have no idea what's going on. i dismiss the idea of 4 external drives having crashed all at the same time just as much as i don't think that the iMac's usb/firewire controller has got any issues. re-formatting any of the 4 drives is out of the question and even if i'd consider such desperate measures, the Disk Utility wouldn't let me re-format anything anyhow, because the drives aren't listed there. i wish i could just use my Time Machine to resolve the issue but, as i mentioned earlier, i can't access the Time Machine because it also won't show up.
please, i need an expert's help here. please, somebody bring back my 4 external drives so i can access them in finder again.
any help will be much appreciated.
thank you in advance..
..Otis

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
diskutil list

  • External Hard Drive not showing up as a back up disk

    Please Help, I'm freaking out!
I received a message stating "Time Machine has not backed up in 10 Days." So I tried to do a manual back up, a manual back up as worked before. Time Machine looked like it was beginning a back, but then it stopped. So I opened Time Machine's preferences and clicked on the information button, the message stated "Time Machine error the backup volume could not be mounted" and the Next Backup field says When Disk is connected.
I went in to look for my back up hard drive and it's not there. How can my disk just completely disappear. Any advice? Will I need to purchase an entirely new external hard drive? 10 days of graphic design work is a lot to potentially lose.
I searched for a message similar to this one, but didn't find one.
    Thanks

mee2, Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
First, where is your hard drive? Is it directly connected to your MacBook Pro (USB/firewire)? Or is it connected to an Airport wireless device?
Does it reappear on your Desktop if you reboot your Mac?
How is the backup drive formatted? If it is FAT32 or Master Boot Record (MBR) Time Machine will not play nice with it. It must be partitioned GUID or Apple Partition Map and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Let us know. Cheers!

  • Formatting of External Hard Drive to be usable by both Windows and MBP?

Hello, I would appreciate some advice regarding the formatting of hard drive here as I'm pretty new to the whole Apple/Macbook Pro scene!
I am currently using a MBP (Retina) for about 2 months now.
I was previously using a Windows PC and had a external hard drive to back up information from it. However, the EHD can only be read by my MacBook Pro and I can't seem to transfer any information into the hard drive. I've been reading up online and it seems that I would have to reformat the external hard drive so that it can be both used by Windows and Macbook.
    I have 2 questions here:
If I were to reformat it to FAT32 or exFAT, will I have to first backup all the data on the hard drive first on another drive? Or will my data be safe amidst the formatting?
Will this formatting of the hard drive allow it to be read by both Windows and PC?
I would really appreciate some advice on this from anyone who has some clue about this! Thank you!!

Ok if you think about backing up over timemachine, your harddrive should have at least 3 times that size you want to back up. Because of incremental Backups over timeperiods.
So my suggestion, for exchange between Windows Mac --> exFat and for timemachine buy a new Harddrive that fits the specifications

  • DVD Drive dropping off grid, followed by Finder and Disk Utility issues

I'm having a very strange series of problems with my 8 core 2.8 MacPro.
A few weeks back I did a DIY repair/replace of my optical drive. For the last few months it was failing to open when the eject button was pushed. The drive would make a noise as if it was going to eject but it would take more and more time/tries to fully engage. After a few calls to Applecare and a few attempts of trouble shooting I got a replacement drive.
And now I'm having a whole slew of other problems and am at a loss as to what is causing them and how to fix them.
The drive ejects beautifully...for a while. But for some odd reason after an indeterminate period of time (by which I mean it's not consistently the same amount of time), the drive simply ceases to exist in the eyes of the computer. It will not show up in "About this Mac" (all that shows up is a blank screen when I click the "Disc Burning" section of "More Info"). It will not eject any disc that is in the drive (which shows up in finder sometimes...even if it can't be played by the DVD player application). It doesn't show up in Disk Utility.
In fact, after a while nothing shows up in Disk Utility. It gets frozen on "Gathering Disk Information" and doesn't show any of the hard drives (yet all of them show up in the Finder window and on the desk top).
And then the great grinding down of operations goes into full swing - sometimes the finder window won't open. Applications won't quit. Going to the Finder/desktop results in Beach Ball of Death. Yet I can force quit using the Dock. Sometimes I can shut down, sometimes I need to use a hard shut down using the power button.
I have rebuilt permissions. I've used Disk Warrior to rebuild/repair all disks. I've unplugged all external hard drives. And upon restarting, things will work...for a while...and then things start going wrong in a domino effect.
I haven't seen any pattern in regards to programs being used (it doesn't, for example, start after I launch any specific program.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated before I call Applecare again!
    Thanks

Thanks for the hard drive tip. I'll see if that helps...
Wish I could tell you what drive I have but today it didn't work upon start-up and I didn't realize it until I started to process/compress something.
Forgot to mention two other things...
    1) I did a virus scan and everything came clean
    2) This all started last week after coming home and doing an Apple automatic software update. Unfortunately I don't know what it was and not sure if it is linked, as I swapped out the drive right before I left for a long weekend (so only tested the new drive briefly)

  • External Hard drive will not appear on desktop or in disk utility.  HELP!?!

I moved my hard drive from upstairs to downstairs. there is no damage to the drive. Yet, now when I try to connect the drive, it powers up, but doesn't show an icon on the desktop, or an icon in the disk utility. The drive is still under warranty, but I don't want to send it back for a new one without all my info on it.
    a) How can I get this drive to be recognized?
    b) How can I get my files off of it before returning the drive?
    Already tried:
    • Disconnecting and reconnecting after powering off the computer.
    • Using a different USB cable
    • Using a different USB port
    • Connecting to a different Mac
    • Connecting to a PC laptop.

Actually, I did solve the problem myself, for free. To see if the adapter was giving enough power, I used a voltage meter. I found out the adapter I had it plugged into was actually giving TOO MUCH power. (Even though it was a 12 volt adapter, it was measuring 18 volts.) I figured out which adapter came with the drive and plugged it in using that one (also a 12 volt adapter, weird) and voilå - it appeared on the desk top as if nothing had changed. You can bet I'll be making DVD back ups tonight however, as the adapter kicking out too much voltage may have damaged the power board at some point, which may cause it to fail prematurely.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • External hard drive format for use in both OS9 and OSX

I have never use OS9. A friend of mine wants to transfer their files from an OS9 computer to an OSX computer. Is there a hard drive format that can be used on both OS9 and OSX. It would be great to be able to transfer the files over on my Firewire hard drive.
    Many thanks,
    Beaglebrain.

    Beaglebrain,
Should have added that you should check the size of your HD. OS9 won't recognise anything beyond about 190GB.

  • External hard drive filesystem to use for both pc and mac

    hi everyone,
i've got a 120 gig portable WD passport harddrive that i'm planning on using to move files between my pc and macbook.
it is recognized fine on both and I am able to copy files to my macbook but cannot write files to it, i'm assuming it has to do with the file system it's using (not sure what it is off hand bought it used and preformated)
any suggestions on how to get it working on both platforms?

Important Note: Reformatting a HD will overwrite all existing files.
Before attempting Reformat,Be sure to Back-up important files to another HD,iPod,CD or DVD.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out.

I have an external hard drive that shows up in disk utility but Verify and Restore are greyed out. I am trying to determine what is wrong with the drive.
I need the data on the drive and it won't show up in Disk Warrior. I have tried different Mac's and different USB cords only to find the same outcome. When selected in Disk Utility the information read as such...
Disk Description : WD Elements 1023 Media                      Total Capacity : 500.11 GB (500,105,740,288 Bytes)
Connection Bus : USB                                                               Write Status : Read/Write
Connection Type : External                                                     S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
USB Serial Number : 575837314135304D36373132        Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
As the drive shows in Disk Utility there must be some life left in it surely. There is a possibilty that the physical connection between the USB cord and the external drive is damaged but since the drive shows up I believe it's unlikely... before I give it to the pro's is there anything else I can do to diagnose the issue?

    Hello,
I have just experienced the same thing!
Although my external drive shows in Disk Utility, it does not show in Finder.
And the Verify/Repair buttons are also greyed out.
Also, although the drive is 2TB. DU shows it as having Total Capacity of only 4.14GB! (Which should be the Free Space).
I was wondering if you solved your problem, & if so, would you share your solution.
I´m afraid to Erase in case I lose all my Data on the drive.
Thanks in advance for your reply!

  • My external hard drive wont show up in the "Save to:" menu when I try to import videos

My old external broke so I found my old one and plugged it in and went to import some videos on imove from an sd card but my external hard drive wont show up on the "save to:" drop down menu. I've been on utility disk to try and repair disk permission but I can't because the button isn't lit up. I can only click on verify disk or repair disk. I tried both of these but it still wont come on the drop down menu. It is showing up on the left in the event library but it has a little yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark in it.
    Hope that all makes sense!
Any help would be very much appreciated!

Ok in disk utility it says Format : MS-DOS (FAT32)
Sorry Im not sure what you mean by can it connect via firewire? Sorry I'm a bit useless with technology haha

  • After iTunes Transfer To External Hard Drive It Shows Less In External Hard Drive

    Hello,
I transffered my iTunes library to a new My Passport Portable 2 TB external hard drive. My iTunes Library is 349.94 GB and on External Hard Drive it shows 204.81 GB after transfer.
Why does it not match up, does it automatically delete duplicates. I want to make sure I have my complete library before deleting it from my computer, thanks .
Couldn't find another category for some reason, hope this will be ok.

Only my computer hard drive is and I want to import from an external drive.  I have always been able to until I updated to Aperture 3.6 and Yosemite.
I had the same problem. On the folders on the drive with the Aperture library did show in the Import panel. After I clicked the computer icon in the upper left corner of the Import panel, suddenly all drives appeared.
You can also try to drag the folder you want to import into the Import panel, to point the file chooser to the drive.

  • HELP?! External Hard Drive stopped registering?!

    Hi all,
I use a Western Digital 1TB External hard drive to back up two of the MacBooks in my family, but also to carry a few heavy files like movies, photos and a couple of Adobe CS6 projects.     A couple of weeks ago my hard drive play up a little, I plugged it in as usual to carry out a couple of backups and file transfers and oddly it did not appear on the desktop nor in the finder, so I unplugged and plugged it back in again, still nothing so I decided to have a quick browse through Apple Support Communities (At the time I had totally forgotten about Disk Utilities and all that.)     Just when I thought I may have found a fix I just went to my desktop to start doing something else, Volia!! Out of the blue it was on my desktop again and was actually starting a time machine backup.     So as you do, I didn't think anything of it and just put it down to glitches.
Last night I decided it would be a good time to do a TM backup, plugged the WD drive in, again no joy, so I went to Disk Utility to verriy and repair the drive and as it does it shows the drive and underneath all if the partition assosiated with it, now the drive was showing up fine however the partition was grayed out, When I try to repair the drive I get this message:
If anyone has any suggestions they would be much appreciated, also I think the WD drive is still in warrenty, so if anyone could help me explain to WD what exactly is happening, much appreciated...
EDIT: The External drive is doing its usual humming and vibrating and the light flashes as normal when connected.

EDIT: The External drive is doing its usual humming and vibrating and the light flashes as normal when connected.
That doesnt mean anything actually. The spindle/rotor is the LAST thing to die in any HD
Its possible you have (very common failure) dead SATA card, however WD is infamous for making SATA cards and controller boards ONE PIECE, in which case youre outta luck.
    read about same here:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD
This is why you never ever NEVER have one backup, rather 2 minimum redundancy copies of your data.
    always.
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
The Tragedy that will be, the tragedy that never should be
Always presume correctly that your data is priceless and takes a very long time to create and often is irreplaceable. Always presume accurately that hard drives are extremely cheap, and you have no excuse not to have multiple redundant copies of your data copied on hard drives and squirreled away several places, lockboxes, safes, fireboxes, offsite and otherwise.
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many 100s of millions of hours of lost work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can avoid by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless 1000s of people each year have come to regret.

  • External Hard Drive/Not Showing Up on Desktop

I have a G4, running OS X 10.2.8 and recently my kids deleted some important data. So--we bought an external hard drive (WD MyBook 160 GB Essential Edition, which says on the box that it runs 10.2.8 and higher).
We took the external hard drive and the computer to a reputable repair place, the guy there took the hard drive out and using a G6 system, restored what he could to the external hard drive.
We bring it home, plug it in, and the computer is not reading the new external hard drive. I did check in disk utility, and it shows up as a greyed out item on the disk utility.
The external hard drive does show up when hooked up to my husband's office PC.
Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to correct it?
    Thanks, Ruth

OK, I figured it out (in case anyone else needs to know) with this information from the Western Digital site:
Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier will only recognize FAT32 partitions that are smaller than 128-gigabytes. Multiple FAT32 partitions smaller than 128-gigabytes will need to be created in order for Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier to recognize the partitions. You will need to use a Windows based computer to create FAT32 partitions, as Macintosh does not have the ability to create them.
Macintosh Operating System 10.4.x or later can recognize FAT32 partitions over 128-gigabytes.

  • External Hard Drives not showing

I have 2 external hard drives connected using FW 800, a Western Digital 500TB & a Seagate 500TB. The Western Digital has a habit of freezing and the last time this happened I powered down the iMac. When I re started the iMac neither external hard drive is showing on the desk top what's happening and how do I cure this?

    HI MIke,
To start with if your forum profile is correct you need to update your system softare to 10.5.8. Go here and install the v10.5.8 Combo Update
Also, in the Finder from the Menu Bar click Finder/Preferences and select the General tab.
Select the 2nd button and relaunch the Finder.
