All of my bookmarks appear in the location bar when all i want is the history

So lets just jump through everything I have done already. I basically figured out that all of the sites listed in my location bar are my bookmarks. All want is history. Before my Location bar settings were set to history and bookmarks, but then I decided to delete all my history and that just left the bookmarks. So figured out the location bar settings thing and I switched it to History but its still showing my bookmarks in the location bar. Some sites I have bookmarked but haven't visited in awhile. I would also like to note that there is no star next these links in the location bar but when I click on any of the links in it they are bookmarked sites. I am guessing the missing star may have something to do with why its being tagged history. I have no clue but I only want history in my location bar not bookmarks. I tried customizing it and still all my bookmarks are in it.

Are those sites redirected to another location?
If the URL stays the same then an URL that is bookmarked should have a star next to it.
You can also restrict the drop down list to websites that you've typed in the location bar.

  • I clear the browsing and download history already, but the history still auto-appear in the location bar when I type the site url. Why?

    I use
tools -> clear recent history -> browsing & download history (everything)
However, all the news or urls I visit couple months ago always auto-appeared when I type the url in the location bar.
I've observed this situation since Firefox 4 or 5, so I am googling how to really delete all my browsing history.
Also, it is weired and angry, firefox keep to remember the wrong id/password of web server authentication data, since I edit my id/password. Firefox always show me the wrong id/password, even I delete everything and every categories in the "Clear All History". It looks the clear history feature doesn't function as it indicated.

Here is how you do it:
Firefox > History > Clear Recent History
(Or Tools > Clear Recent History)
Then in the opened window hit the button beside details and then check all of the available things in there.
Also pay attention that everything is selected in the list of the upper side.
If this helped you, please hit 'Solved it' Button so the topic would be closed.

  • How do I get the location bar drop-down list to show the most recently visited page at the top? I have no idea how it's deciding what to display.

In IE when you show the drop-down list from the location bar, it show you all of your most recently visited pages in descending order with the most recent at the top. Firefox is showing me a list that I have no idea where it's getting the pages from or how it's ordering them. It doesn't update the pages or the order when I go to a new page. I have recently switched from IE to Firefox and cannot figure out how to get Firefox to do this; very annoying.

That drop down list doesn't show recently visited pages, but shows list list of most visited sites sorted by what the Mozilla devs call frecency (frequency and recency) and is based on bonus points. It is not possible to have much influence on what shows on that list.
If you want a list of recently visited sites then you can use a smart bookmark e.g. on the Bookmarks Toolbar with the location set to this smart folder.<br />
    Name: <b>Recently Visited</b><br />
    Location: <b>place:queryType=0&sort=4&maxResults=30</b><br />
You need to close and restart Firefox to make that folder work as intended.

  • The Enter Key does not work in the location bar; I have to manually select the "Go To" icon since upgrading to Version 10.

I just upgraded to Firefox 10. When I manually enter a URL into the location bar, the "Go To" arrow does not have focus, so the Enter Key will not work. I have to manually select the "Go To" arrow to navigate. Any suggestions?

This could be the AVG safe search extension. If you have that installed, try disabling it. Instructions here: [[Using extensions with Firefox#w_how-to-disable-or-remove-extensions]]

  • When I set (on two different computers) the Location Bar to "Nothing" it resets to "History and bookmarks" as soon as I close and reopen Firefox.

When I set (on two different computers) the Location Bar option: When using the location bar suggest: to "Nothing" it resets to "History and bookmarks" as soon as I close and reopen Firefox. I am using the latest vesion on Win8 on both computers. One has Bitdefender the othe McKafee. I have no obvious Addware, I use Iobit Uninstaller Advanced Care and and Driver manager on both computers. Until now I have always used Firefox as I refuse to use Explorer and I do not want to have to use Opera or another browser instead.
    Can you please help?

Have you seen this general article: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]]?
Also, this might be a glitch with using automatic private browsing mode. Some settings changes might not be saved in that mode.
If all else fails, do you want to try a manual hack?
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window (Windows Explorer window) showing your current settings files.
Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
    * (menu bar) File > Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then open '''prefs.js''' in a text editor by right-clicking it and choosing Edit or Open With. (Double-clicking leads to Windows attempting to execute it, so I do not recommend that.)
Paste this at the end of the file on its own line:
    user_pref("browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled", false);
Then save the file and close your editor.
Start Firefox back up again. Did the manual change work?

  • Whne I clear all history it does not clear the address bar, I still can click on the right side and see all of my past web sites

I am using the newest version, and have done a clear recent history with all boxes checked

Entries in the location bar drop down list with a yellow (blue on Mac) star at the right end are bookmarks.<br />
You can remove such a bookmarked item that shows in the list if you open that url in a tab and click the yellow star in the location bar.<br />
This will open the "Edit This Bookmark" dialog and you can click the Remove button to remove the bookmark if you want to remove such a bookmarked entry.<br />

  • Using Firefox 4.0 Beta 4. When I open a link in a new window, the web address does not show in the location bar. Why?

When I open a web page link in "a new window" the link opens, but the web page information does not appear in the location bar. It is blank. If I open the link in a new tab, there is ho problem.
Further, if a open a link from the tab without a location in a new tab on the same window and then go back to the original tab, the location bar fills with the web address.
Have done this starting in several locations, so it not location dependent.

That behaviour is likely top be caused by an add-on, and in your case the likely culprit is IE Tab 2, the various versions of IE Tab have caused problems with Firefox 4 beta including issues with the location bar not being updated.
You can test to see if IE Tab 2 is causing your problem by disabling it and then seeing if the location bar in a new window shows the address. If it is not that add-on causing the problem, see [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
For info, the IE Tab Plus add-on has been updated recently to improve compatibility with Firefox 4 beta, you may want to try that one instead. The latest version is available from http://coralietab.mozdev.org/installation.html

  • I would like to move the reload button off of the location bar. I would also like to have a visible "forward" button as well as the back button.

Simple as that. Given that I have OCD, it's extremely unpleasant to have both the forward and back buttons not consistently visible. How can I return to that appearance?
I also want to separate the reload button from the location bar, as I had it before the update. I find myself reloading pages quite often, and having the button be smaller, and within the location bar, is well... kinda counter-intuitive.
Ideally, I would like to have it ordered, from left to right: back, forward, reload, location bar.
Firefox has always been very customizable, and very user friendly. A few hiccups here and there, sure, but you can typically get what you want done, one way or another. So can you guys help me out? This is driving me crazy. I have installed Classic Theme Restorer, and it doesn't change that I can't currently do this.

Hi Rose1, if you mean in the regular address bar of Firefox 29, the Forward button should appear after you have used Back.
If you mean in the Classic Theme Restorer, you first need to check the box for "Movable back-forward button" in its Options. Open the Add-on page using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions, then click the Options button for Classic Theme Restorer. On the "Main" tab, under General UI, you will find this option. As you check and uncheck, Firefox shows the result of the change, so you should see the arrows appear on the right end of the main toolbar.
After finishing with this dialog, you can use Customize to drag them where you want them.
    Any luck?

  • How can I get Firefox 4 to display the URL of active tabs in the location bar so I can see and copy it?

The only URL that I ever see in the location bar is the last one I typed there. No matter which tab I activate, the last typed URL is displayed. When I need to copy the URL of an active tab to paste into an email or something I can't see it.
The location bar used to display the URL of each active tab and you could simply click in the address field and the URL would be highlighted so you could edit/copy it or jump to the end of a very long URL to see the final file name.
I can't get this feature to work and I really need this feature as I need to copy URL's quite often. When I have multiple tabs active I sometimes forget which one is for which domain and need to see the URL. It is very annoying to surf blind.
Please help me with this issue as quickly as possible so I can once again do my work easily and with the firefox browser instead of chrome. :(

    A couple of possible causes.
The first is the file that stores details of browsing history and bookmarks is corrupt. For details on how to fix that see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
Another possible cause is an add-on interfering with the location bar. To test this, use the procedure in this link - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes

  • How to remove history in the location bar? Deleting history and then using "History" only in the settings for the location bar does not remove old history.

I want to remove ''old History'' in the Location bar.
    I am using Firefox 3.6.13.
"Clear recent history" does not remove the old History in the Location bar. And changing the setting to only show "History" does also not remove the old history.
Pressing "Delete" on single lines when opening the list by clicking the arrow to the right in the location bar, remove the entries temporary. But next time you type in the location bar, the same suggestions are there.

    See:
    * [[Clearing Location bar history]]
    * [[Cannot clear Location bar history]]
Entries in the location bar drop down list with a yellow (blue on Mac) star at the right end are bookmarks.<br />
You can remove such a bookmarked item that shows in the list if you open that url in a tab and click the yellow star in the location bar.<br />
This will open the "Edit This Bookmark" dialog and you can click the Remove button to remove the bookmark if you want to remove such a bookmarked entry.

  • Why can't I load a page by hitting enter after I type it into the location bar? I have to click on the green arrow to load new pages.

When I type a URL into the location bar, I have to click on the green arrow at the right end of the location bar for the new page to load. In previous versions of Firefox you just hit enter to load the new page.

This didn't help my problem. When I restart Firefox in Safe Mode, the problem goes away but none of the other troubleshooting tips help. I noticed today that when I start Firefox in normal mode, I get this error: "TypeError: Components.classes[cid] is undefined." It's a Javascript error, and I also noticed that when I go to the Gmail page in normal mode the cursor isn't automatically placed in the username field like usual. When I start Firefox in safe mode it does this, however.

  • The Bookmarks toolbar is empty, doesn't allow me to add any bookmarks. I have tried all the options indicated in the support website, but none work. The toolbar remains empty and does not even allow me to drag something down to it from the location bar.

Please see the question above, as that is the problem I am having. I don't understand why the Bookmarks tab does not show any of the bookmarks which I have tagged. They can only be chosen from the drop down menu. I tried dragging the page to the bookmark toolbar from the location bar but that does not work. Is it a glitch in the system?

If the menu bar is hidden then press the F10 key or hold down the Alt key to make the menu bar appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
*Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize"
*Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
*If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up

  • All of a suddem a period consistently appears automatically in the location bar in front of my selected website address. How do I stop this?

The automatic insertion of a period before the desired web address causes the search to error.
I currently must always manually remove this period before I type the address...very annoying.
What did I inadvertently do to cause this period to remain after I delete an address from the
location bar and how do I correct it?

Try a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 19.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • Clicking on the downward arrow at the right end of the location bar no longer displays the drop-down list of sites visited, bookmarks and addresses typed in location bar

Since I upgraded to Firefox version 3.6.10, clicking on the downward arrow at the right end of the location bar no longer displays the drop-down list of sites visited, bookmarks and addresses typed in location bar. My Tools > Options > privacy setting is to save history, and if I start typing a previously accessed website's address in the location bar, then the full address appears as a drop-down item. But not when I just click at the right end of the bar.

You can try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the [[Safe mode]] start window.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
