All versions of InDesign: startup script?
While I am working the other problem I am having with my script (see my addition to the forum on 2 September 2008), I thought I might query the forum for one more piece of information? The script I am working on I will want to run every time InDesign is opened. I looked at the Events chapter in the CS3 reference manual, and though it is a powerful tool, it seems to only address events after InDesign is up and running. Is there a way to make InDesign run a script automatically, right after opening up? Additionally, I will want to run this script in all three versions of InDesign. I'll bet that if I just name a script with a certain name and put it in the correct folder, the problem will be taken care of (I seem to remember the same mentioned at a seminar I attended), but I cannot find the documentation that tells me what the name is or where it (the script) should be stored.
TIA!
John
Note from the original poster:
It turns out that in CS3, the folder is called "Startup Scripts." The same name does not seem to work for CS, though I have not tried it yet for CS2.

OS X Leopard 10.5.8
They were all working fine last week, but when I tried to print or export files (tried various files) InDesign crashes. And strangely, it seems to have affected *all* running versions of InDesign on my machine (4, 5, & 5.5).
Other than a minor Acrobat update, I can't think of any other update between last Friday and today.
Here is an example crash log if that helps...

I sitll don't know what AdobeBIB is, but it has something to do with PDF generation and the AGM library.
Other than a minor Acrobat update, I can't think of any other update between last Friday and today.
It's not impossible that is related. There are shared components between InDesign and Acrobat and perhaps something broke.
That's not supposed to happen, but it could.
Generally the crash logs from the latest version (e.g. CS5.5) are more helpful... -
Will Newer Versions of InDesign Still Open/Convert Mac PM 6.5 Files?
All right, you've convinced me. I can see that holding on to old technology is not a viable long-term solution regarding PageMaker vs. InDesign. Eventually my old PowerMac Quad will fail and not be able to be repaired. At that point I would be forced into an Intel Mac and new software. I have a ton of PageMaker 6.0 and 6.5 files and will need to convert them to a new version of InDesign. I realize PM6 files will not work with InDesign, that I have to do the initial conversion via PM6.5.
I've studied the PageMaker forum hoping to see if this specific question has been advanced and answered but saw none. If in fact it has been addressed please understand that at least I did try before writing this.
My question is this: Will all versions of InDesign IE: CS1, CS2, CS3, CS4 or CS5 open PageMaker 6.5 files? Or will I have to go back to InDesign 2.0, copy/convert all the PM6.5 files and then begin the upgrade process? Surely (and hopefully) Adobe provides a direct upgrade path to the newest InDesign version once you have all PageMaker 6.5 files, rather than making you upgrade to each version individually. If Adobe provides a direct upgrade to the latest InDesign product will this policy be true throughout it's product line? I also have older versions of PhotoShop, Illustrator and Acrobat to be concerned with. (I know, I know... the last couple of sentences are not about PageMaker-sorry)
If anyone can answer this, please let me know so I can plan accordingly. Begrudgingly, I will probably begin the transition to InDesign soon. Looks like I'm in for a long, long study period to get up-to-speed. Bye-bye PageMaker, bye-bye PowerMac, so sad to see you go.Chuck, I am not very qualified t
o answer your questions, but will do my best within my limi
tations (I am still using InDesign CS3, and I haven't had to work with PageMaker files for years).
I did open many PM 6.5 files with ID2, and I have just opened a couple in ID3. These two last were rather simple jobs, and opened without a hitch. When I had to open PM files with ID2, I remember some opened flawlessly, most with relatively minor glitches, and some required a lot of work to look the same than the originals. And yes, each version of ID that I have used opens PM files directly; no need to pass from older to newer versions.
Another thing I remember is that I also had a great number of PM files, which I still keep, but the ones that I have really had (needed) to convert are just a small fraction of them. Maybe you'll live a similar experience.
As for the learning curve, it surely is there; but in my case, I found it not at all steep, quite the contrary: I was surprised to find how fast I got used to the "new version" of PageMaker. Maybe if I did the move now (to version CS5) I wouldn't find the transition so easy as to ID2. And I know of people who have not found it easy, but don't seem to reacall anyone complaining of how very difficult it was for him/her.
As for upgrading several products at the same time, you'll have to think carefully what your future needs are really likely to be. You see, Adobe offers a very attractive price for "the whole lot", what they call the Creative Suite. I have however heard many complaints of people who feel they were "trapped" when they followed that route, because when it comes to upgrades, they can only upgrade the whole suite, not each product at a time. So you may be stuck with upgrading products you don't use and think will never use. Sort of what happened with Word and Excel, wich were the basis of MS Office: I understand that nowadays you cannot even buy each product separately, although I may be wrong.
If I were you, most probably I would upgrade at this time each product separately, keeping in mind that perhaps later it could be better for me to buy the Suite. And regarding this route: Adobe still offers a very convenient upgrade price from PageMaker to InDesign (no choice but the latest version), but nobody knows for how long they will keep this offer. I was one of those who though that when V5 was launched, Adobe would stop selling PageMaker (something that in my opinion they should have done when InDesign appeared), and the upgrade offer would end, but apparently I was wrong on both counts. Just be warned that this particular upgrade offer may be gone any day...
As for parting with such old and faithful friends, part of the words of a song my grandmother used to sing when I was a child came immediately back to my mind: Un viejo amor no se olvida ni se deja... an old love is never (really) forgotten or abandoned in my free translation, where I use the word "love" with the meaning of "loved person", and the optional "really" I added comes form the rest of the words of the song.
Hope this helps.

How to check indesign version installed by Apple Script
Hi Friends,
I want to make an apple script which will check for the version of Indesign installed in the "Applications" folder.
I tried using "exists" function of Finder. But seems something is missing/incorrect.
tell application "Finder"
exists application file "Adobe InDesign CS4" of folder "Applications"
end tell
Please can you suggest.
Thanks,
AbhishekHi Niel,
Thanks for your email.
Basically, I need to check whether a user has which version of Indesign on his mac like (CS3, CS4 etc)
Accordingly, I have to create different loops.
I have CS4 installed on my mac but when I run the below
tell application "Finder"
exists version of application file "Adobe InDesign CS4" of folder "Applications" of startup disk
end tell
The result is false.. even though I have CS4 installed. And, if I try
get version of application "Adobe InDesign CS4"
It gives o/p as "6.0.6.622"
Thanks for your help!

Missing startup script for version cue
I'm having the problem where I don't seem to have the startup scripts for version cue in bridge.
When I check the list of startup scripts in preferences, the other scripts all seem to be there like for contribute, fireworkds etc. However version cue is missing.
I also checked the actual locations for the startup scripts.
The scripts for version cue seem to be in the actual locations but for some reason they're not running or showing up in bridge or that's what I'm assuming anyway.
I'm running bridge CS4 and version cue CS4.
If anyone could help me that would be great!What then do they recommend? The URL listed below is broken/no longer available. The solution listed above does appear to work. I installed Version Cue Server CS4 after having installed the rest of the suite on my workstation. I used drive to link to the server(my machine which I am using for testing). I had CS3 on this machine before uninstalling it and installing CS4.

how to set up the interaction between InDesign CS6 8.0 and Photoshop CS 6 - if Photoshop is installed and the 64 and 32-bit?? default InDesign refers to the 64-bit version of Photoshop and scripts do not work.
Nice of you to point it out here as I at least don’t follow Mr.Nash’s blog regularly.

Startup Script missing after uninstalling old Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign CC - although I kept Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign CC 2014!! Any help would be highly appreciated! Thank you in advance
I'm in the same boat.
Anyone who know how we can fix this? -
I am trying to startup InDesign but a window opens and reads, cannot load BNCORE.RPLN plugin. It requires 10.2 version of Indesign. Need compatible version of BNCORE.RPLN. What do I do at this point

Is InDesign 2.0 compatible with all versions of Adobe Pro?
Is InDesign 2.0.2 compatible with all versions of Adobe Professional?
For years, I created InDesign documents using 2.0.2, placing PDF documents created using Acrobat Distiller 6.0.1 (Windows) with no issue. At the beginning of 2010, my software was updated from Adobe Pro 6 to Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 with no change to InDesign.
When I place PDF documents created using the newer 9 version, I receive an error, "This PDF document was saved with security settings which prevent its pages from being placed." I am unable to decipher what needs to be changed. Under the security properties of the PDF documents created using version 6 and 9, there are NO security settings.
Is there an action step I can take when placing the PDF documents (version 9) into InDesign 2.0?In Acrobat 9, open the PDF.
Go to the Document Menu
Select Reduct File Size
Set the compatability level
Alternately, Export the PDF to PDF/X, and select the 1a option. This should 'dumb down' the PDF enough for ID 2 to accept it.

Startup Script folder empty - no Bridge CS5 Output to Web?
Something must have gone wrong installing CS5 Photoshop over CS4 Indesign!
Even after net-updating to Bridge 4.0.2 the startup script folder (Preferences > Startup Scripts) is empty. When selecting the Output Workspace in Bridge, there is no pane that let one output to Web Gallery or Contact Sheet.
I'm doing this meanwhile in CS4 Bridge, where it works fine. This Bridge version was coming with CS4 InDesign.
I downloaded CS5 Photoshop in April (I guess it's an International English upgrade) running it on OSX 10.6.4 on a new 17" Book.
Is there an upgrade coming, how can I achieve full functionality of Bridge CS5?
Than you in advance for your input,
Bernd RummelHi Omke,
I did download and install the Photoshop CS5 upgrade by April. Since the Output to Web Gallery pane was not there at the Output workspace as well as all Sartup Scripts are missing at Bridge Preferences, I completely reformatted (actually changed the partitions) and reinstalled OSX 10.6.3, my 17" Book came with. Than I upgraded to OSX 10.6.4.
Now, before doing (screwing up) anything else, I installed Acrobat 9 and run the rather lengthy process of installing each and every upgrade to the latest version. Than I installed InDesign CS4 (version 6) and upgraded this. Finally I installed Photioshop CS5, only to still have the Startup Scripts and subsequently the output to web gallery pane missing. Of course, also the Twitter and Facebook stuff is not there. However, this is not my concern since I do not use them.
The upgrade to Bridge 4.0.2 didn't change anything, so didn't todays upgrade to Photoshop 12.0.1.
Please note that I do not use the CS Suite but upgrade Adobe Acrobat, InDesign and Photoshop individually, which used to work fine for many years. And so I have Bridge CS4 and Bridge CS5 installed side by side. At the CS4 version the Startup Scripts and Output to Web Gallery does work as expected the CS5 version of Bridge is short of both. This shouldn't happen, since I installed CS5 Photoshop over Bridge CS4.
Actually two weeks back I tied to un-install both the CS4 Bridge as well as the CS5 Photoshop, and than to just install Photoshop CS5 without InDesign with Bridge CS4 being installed. The Startup Scripts and Output to Web Gallery wasn't there either.
Do you think I can get an other Photoshop CS5 softcopy somewhere that makes my serial number as well as the output to web gallery work? This would turn me back to be a happy photoshopper that I am since version 2.5... when I switched from Cibachrome in darkroom to Photoshop on Mac now about 16 years back.
I look forward to your input.

Startup script to load shortcuts - in a Citrix environment
Let me offer a sample of what I have and ask if anyone knows how to fill in the gaps.
For starters, a listening script upon booting up InDesign:
#target InDesign
#targetengine session
//collect the name of current user
var userName = getUser();
function getUser() {
var myUser = ($.os.substring(0, 7)=="Windows")
? $.getenv("USERNAME")
: $.getenv("USER");
return myUser;
// var startupScriptsFolder = "/z/Scripting/Startup scripts/";
var startupScriptsFolder = "/Applications/Adobe InDesign CC/Scripts/startup scripts/";
var startupScriptFiles = Folder(startupScriptsFolder).getFiles();
for (var i = 0; i < startupScriptFiles.length; i++) {
app.doScript(startupScriptFiles[i]);
then the script itself:
#target InDesign
#targetengine session
//get or create folder for script preferences
var scriptPrefsFolderPath = "/Users/madmac55/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 9.0/en_US/InDesign Shortcut Sets/";
if (Folder(scriptPrefsFolderPath).exists == false) {
Folder(scriptPrefsFolderPath).create();
var locationPrefsFilePath = scriptPrefsFolderPath + "/ MyShortcuts.indk";
This hasn't worked for me and it's a hacked solution at best. So I am wondering how to get it all to click. In a Citrix environment (windows), Adobe puts the preferences in a hidden folder path ~/AppData/Roaming/ and this is where it's tough to find them — on the server(s) you land on.
Because you land on an arbitrary server, you have to run the getUser statement first, then drill down inside. I realize I have mixed paths of Mac & PC, and I'm really writing abiout a PC environment, but paths are interchangeable. It's the script that counts.Hey Mac,
I'm not sure if this will work for you as I've only used it when making .bat files... but, in Windows, you can reference the folder directly by using the variable "%USERNAME%"
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version 5.0\Scripts\Scripts Panel\
Hope it helps. -
Office 2010 setup thru computer startup script
I am trying to install Office 2010 (sp2 seperate in the updates folder) thru group policy startup script and configured with OCT .msp file. Also try to start Access Runtime 2010 with SP2 update in the updates folder.
In group policy set run scripts asynchronisely disabled and run scripts visible enabled otherwise i could not see what the system was doiing also not when configiguring OCT with full display. The gpo settings lets the screens show during install so the user
can see what happens.
There is another problem that rises however: I have made 2 batchfiles and both are starting as a computer startup script in seperate gpo's (that is in another post). First the Accessruntime is installing, after that Office 2010 is running. Both are installed
after login but only one of the 2 have SP2 installed (7015) in this case Accessruntime has it. When i run only the Office 2010 install and not the Accesruntime 2010 then Office 2010 standard has also SP2 installed (version 7015). When running both only Runtime
has this sp2 and Office has 4763 this is without sp2 i believe.
In both folders (Office en Runtime) are the update files .msp in the updates folder of the installation, so thats ok.
Why is only 1 of the 2 installing the SP2 when running both?
A second thing is when restarting the system and before the login screen appears a message: Upgradepatch cannot be installed by Windows installer becasue the upgraded program does not excist of the upgradepatch is not suitable for this program?
Here is part of the batchfile:
IF EXIST "c:\program files\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE" (goto mkfile) ELSE (goto DeployOffice)
:mkfile
ECHO Office 2010 is reeds geinstalleerd>c:\temp\office.txt
goto end
:DeployOffice
call cscript \\sharename\office2010\Offscrub03.vbs ALL /bypass 1 /q /s /NoCancel
start /wait %DeployServer%\setup.exe /adminfile %DeployServer%\officeconfig.msp
echo %date% %time% Setup ended with error code %errorlevel%. >> %LogLocation%\%computername%.txt
Another batchfile
start \\sharename\accessruntime2010\setup.exe /config \\share\accessruntime2010\config.xml
REM echo %date% %time% Setup ended with error code %errorlevel%. >> %LogLocation%\%computername%.txt
freddie
after installing both runtime and office both have SP2 in updates folder:
runtime 4763
Office 2010: 7015
So in this example runtme is installed without the SP2. installing runtime alone gives with SP2...
The message is gone. There was a other policy inherited from above that caused the message. The only problem now is that when installing both, runtime 2010 with SP2 files and Office 2010 with SP2 files, then one of the two don't get the Sp2 installed, why
is that?> In the bat file, I have a line that records if the install completes
> successfully or failed. I don't have any other logging in my
> script. Are you referring to something like GPO logging? I know that
> the script runs because when I am looking at one of the PCs, I can
So it is NOT GP related but rather your script fails?!? Put some "echo
%~n0 %date% %time%>>Log-File-Of-Your-Choice.txt" in it to check what's
going on. And put ">>Log-File-Of-Your-Choice.txt 2>&1" at the end of
critical commands to capture their output.
> I ran the gpresult /h command which shows all User Configuration
> policies, but NOTHING appears under the Computer Configuration section.
Admin commandline? If not, you don't see computer settings :)

Good or bad GPOs?
And if IT bothers me - coke bottle design refreshment :))
Martin,
I still did not figure out why the installation script did not work for some of the PCs, even though the PCs have the same image. For the ones that don't work, I will install manually. Can you please look at the screenshots of the GPO
settings I am using, and let me know if there is any settings that I need to remove or add?

Indesign Post Script name changing to back up file name
Hi all
I am in a pre press workflow that requires that I write a post-script file to a hot folder.
So saving as a post-script is the only option for our entire workflow to take place.
When saving the post script file from indesign , the name defaults to the back up file name which is
not similar to the original file name. We deal with an extremely large number of pages
and need for this file name to stay the same as the original not the back up. Manually putting these file names
in is a serious chance for error and takes too much time.
Does anyone know how to prevent the name from changing?
Thanks for any help.You should be posting to the InDesign or Acrobat forum. Please repost there giving them your version of InDesign and Acrobat. Detail you method of creating the postscript file. You should be printing to file using the Adobe PDF printer instance. I only suggest the InDesign forum, since the print dialog box in InDesign is not a standard Windows Print dialog box.

Why doesn't the #target directive work in InDesign CC scripting?
I have a script which works fine when run from ExtendScript Toolkit on both InDesign CS4 and InDesign CC -- but I am unable to specifically target CC using the #target directive.
At the top of my .jsx file, if I put:
#target "InDesign-6.0"
Then the script will open InDesign CS4 and run the script. However, if I put:
#target "InDesign-9.0"
It throws a dialog error "InDesign-9.0" is undefined! I've tried 8.0 and 9.1 just in case I had the version number wrong; nothing works.
Now, it is true that I can get it to work by simply adding:
#target "InDesign"
which targets the latest installed version, CC. BUT this is not a solution, just a workaround! I want to be absolutely sure I am targeting the specific version specified. Someday I may install a newer version alongside it, and then all of a sudden it will "jump" to that version when the script runs, and that's not what I want.
Any suggestions?After CS6 InDesign was completely converted to 64-bit application.However for windows platform 32-bit version was still supported. Hence for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit both type of versions were part of installation.
To distinguish between 32-bit and 64-bit version of InDesign, following targets are used.
For Windows Use:
#target "indesign-9.032" //If want use 32-bit version indesign
#target "indesign-9.064" //If want use 64-bit version indesign
For Mac Use:
#target "indesign-9.064" //As Most of the MAC machine are already 64-bit , Only 64-bit InDesign is provided for Mac.
