Almost ready to buy............

I am in the process of putting things together to purchase the MacBook Pro. I now have the first iMac available and want to know how to transfer files from that one to the Pro. I have been doing all the updating of apps on the iMac, so all those are up to date. Will I use any of those. I have some old Classic programs, such as Freehand, Quark, Illustrator,(can't remember versions now) Will they run on the new Pro?
Thanks for the responses:
Lyle

There is no OS9/classic mode on Intel Macs, so I'm afraid you'll have to upgrade those apps to OSX versions.
In terms of transferring, the Firewire connection Peter mentions is key - you'll boot your old machine into "Firewire disk mode", and connect it to your MacBook with a Firewire cable - the MacBook will see your old drive as a Firewire drive.
At that point you have two options. You can use the Migration Assistant built into MacOS, or you can reinstall apps and migrate your data files and preferences from the old machine manually.
The advantage of Migration Assistant is it's very easy - just walk through a wizard and then wait for your stuff to be moved over. The disadvantage is that some things may not transfer cleanly (e.g., a preferences file for a utility may reference files/resources on your old machine that are configured differently on the MacBook). Typically, 90+% of your stuff will be fine, but you may have to test out things and reinstall some apps, plus clean up your preferences in some cases.
The advantage of moving things manually is that you end up with a clean system - no old stuff brought over from the "attic" on your old machine. The apps start off with clean preferences, you can copy over the ones you need from the old machine. The disadvantage is it's more labor-intensive, and you'll have to research some apps to figure out what preferences and data files need to be moved.
I did the manual migration, and it was not bad at all. But I can see the allure of the Migration Assistant. So I guess if you're willing to go through the steps of a manual migration, and/or if your old machine is pretty crusty with old apps and files, I'd suggest the manual migration route. If you'd rather not bother, definitely give Migration Assistant a try.

  • Almost ready to buy a Mac, but....

Hi I am this close to buying a Macbook for my wife who has been using windows pc for the past several years as a "classic user". I have the following questions, which may appear too simple / dumb to the experienced users but we are struggling getting to the bottom of this and want to make sure before splurging close to $2500 on a Macbook Pro (she really likes the look of the mac, thats why). Her needs are basic (email, chat, internet, word processing) and slightly advanced (audio/video playback & editing - from digital voice recorders, camcorders etc):
-> Does Firefox work equally well on Macs?
-> Do chat applications like Yahoo Messenger, Gmail chat, Skype etc work on a Mac?
-> Can iChat support a "windows" user on the other end using chat apps like yahoo, etc?
-> Does Openoffice work cleanly on a Mac? Essentially, she wants to use basic office functions but wants to be able to share docs with windows PCs as well. The apple retail store guy strongly recommended we buy MS-Office for Mac which felt quite strange
-> Any recommendations on native Mac applications that will allow us to "transcribe" digitally recorded audio files (planning to use ipod adapters to record and then transcribe using things like dragon naturally speaking but they work only with windows)?
-> In general, can we share files created in a Mac with a PC (or vice versa) if they have the same extension (seems silly to ask but is a .jpg created on a pc exactly the same as a .jpg created on a mac??) Anything to watch out for?
-> How much overhead does "parallels" impose when switching between Mac & Windows apps? or how much memory / processor capacity is recommended?
Thanks in advance for any insights!

I am in same position as the OP - about to buy a Mac after being on Windows.
I had similar questions, and I am a bit confused over one of the answers. About chatting. I have several people I Instant Message with using AIM or MSN Messenger. The answer was that certain chat programs, like yahoo messenger, would work, but then it said iChat couldn't support people on other end using MSN.
Does that mean that I will Not be able to sue MSN Messenger and AIM to chat with people who are using those programs? If not, is there something I CAN use to accomplish that?
And another switchiver question: I have years worth of emails on Outlook. Is there a way to import outlook mail into Mac? I cannot seem to find the folders which contain my outlook mail. Assuming I will be able to find them, will hey be compatible with mac mail if I load onto a disk & transfer to the Mac?
And will I be able to sue Gmail on the Mac?
And lastly - here's a super LOW TECH question. The way my computer desk is set up, I will need at least a 40" cord from the keyboard to connect to the Mac desktop. Can anyone tell me if the cord that comes with the 20" Intel Mac is long enough? I have not had luck with wireles keyboards, so prefer wired.
    THANK YOU

  • My Sites error - 403 and "We're almost ready!" plaguing web application

On an in-house managed farm, a My Site web application has been created per the instructions provided from
Microsoft. The web application uses the managed path "personal" at the root of
http://mysites.  The initial "We're almost ready!" screen when accessing a social feature like

SharePoint Brian's suggestion to re-run the Product & Config wizard here
Troubleshooting efforts so far in addition to the sources quoted above:
Checking account permissions (obvious, with an "access denied" message) for UPA, Metadata and Workflow service accounts
Creating a special permission policy for the web application to allow "Everyone" to create subsites
Checking SQL rights for SA's and their respective DB's
Started IIS application pool "SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool" (it was stopped initially)
ANY help in further troubleshooting this issue would be greatly appreciated.  I have already re-created the web application multiple times with the same results each time.  Thank you.
    Eric

I re-created the web application again.  What's the definition of insanity?  Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?  Well, in this case I actually did get a different result.  At least this time there
    wasn't a 403 error, but a 404!  Success!
In any case, I used a load balancer for this farm and re-mapped the bindings in IIS to point to that IP.  Lo and behold, we have lift off!  Everything is working, even the social features.  All it took was me talking to myself in a forum and
doing repetitive tasks expecting different results... oh, hang on, there's a nice gentleman in a white coat here to take me some place nice.  Thank you!

    I need this immediately.
    Anybody can help??
I am ready to buy any 3rd party app also, if it can provide this without slowing down the performance.
    2. Further, i can not sms from contacts screen. There is no option to sms , when i select a contact. I have to go to SMS and there type contact name , how can i enable this?
    3. If i receive a call and i want to send sms to the person, i can not tap on called no and choose and option to sms him. I have to copy that number, go to SMS app and use that no to sms. Have conflicting views from apple Specialits; I'm ready to buy my 1st Mac. However, I work with a PC user with MS Publisher files a lot. Can Apple PAGES open .pub files, edit and resave them?  OR, do I have to buy Publisher software for Macs?  if yes to buy, any recommendations?

If you want to switch from PC to Apple I recommend a programm like Parallels.
It has a tool (believe its called transporter) which runs on your current PC and creates a file (big) which is a "virual machine". It is a 1:1 copy of your PC which will run under parallels on your iMac.
You will be running your "old" PC as it was under MAC OS X while you run MAC applikations etc at the same time.
This is how I made the transition to Apple.

  • Newsfeed stuck on "We're almost ready."

We have an on prem farm where we pre-provisioned 18,000 mysites. One of our user’s Newsfeed is stuck on “We’re almost ready.” I can see his Mysite, so the issue is specifically with his Newsfeed. I’ve confirmed his Personal Site Capabilities are set to 14.
I’m wondering if the best approach to this problem would be to delete his MySite and let the user start again. Has anyone used this approach? Can I get some confirmation from Microsoft that this is a sanctioned action?

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you got stuck on “We’re almost ready” in Newsfeed.
You can check the Site Naming Format setting.
Did the Site Naming Format setting set to “User Name (do not resolve conflict)” ?
You can change it to “User name (resolve conflicts by using domain_username)” using below steps, then check whether it works.
SharePoint Central Admin >> Application Management >> Manage Service Application >> User Profile Service Application >> Set up my Site >> Site Naming Format >> Change the setting to “User name (resolve conflicts by using
    domain_username)”

  • I'm ready to buy an iMac

I am a long time PC user and I am ready to get a Mac. I am a Visual Studio programmer so I would either be running Boot Camp and/or Parallels. I bought a MacBook and few months ago for my son and he loves it. I have decided on an iMac (can't afford the Mac Pro right now) but I have a question.
With all of the issues surrounding the new iMac's I am thinking of getting the older model.
I can get the last gen 24 inch iMac at the local CompUSA right now $1399. It does not come with Leopard or iLife '08 though.
I assume I can still get extended AppleCare also.
Do you long time mac users think I would be better off getting this iMac and just buying iLife and Leopard or would you reccommend going with the current iMac?
I also wonder if anyone has any experience with the 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme version. This is the one I would really love to get if money were no object!

You point out repeatedly that the TN screens in the current 20" iMacs are essentially the same screens that were in the white 17" iMac.
By "essentially the same" I mean that they both use TN panels, thus are prone to the gradient effect that is characteristic of most TN panels. That comment has no other meaning beyond that.
...let's not forget that even the entry level 20" iMac costs hundreds of dollars more than the old 17" iMac costs, and for that kind of money, people expect and deserve higher quality.
Of course they do, but the 20" aluminum iMacs also have more horsepower than the 17" iMacs, so the hardware component costs are going to be higher.
It has been pointed out to me that the previous generation 20" iMac was sold for the same price as the 20" 2.4 GHz iMac, so I can understand people having heartburn over that one. Still, given the newer processor in the aluminum iMac, I'm guessing that Apple switched to a TN panel to offset the component cost increases due to the newer Core 2 Duo processor and other hardware changes.
I entered into this fracas because of all of the assertions that the 20" iMac displays were inherently defective. It was that point specifically that I objected to because I felt it was unfair and misleading. Maintaining that the TN panels are inherently defective because of the gradient effect is simply not true and it causes unnecessary concern among those who already bought them or who are considering buying them.
Beyond that, I don't take issue with anyone who dislikes TN panels or who feels that Apple is being deceptive in the way that they are marketing the new iMacs in relation to their lack of candor over the display change in the 20" model.

  • Ready To Buy FX1 but Where To Buy?

We are ready to make a new home at our company for the Sony HDR FX1 HDV camera. But there is some confusion with the wide range of prices on the internet.
B&H seems to be a trustworthy seller and has a price of 2999. Not bad since the camera is recommended retail at 3999. Now we find that it is advertised at 1499 at thecamerapros.com.
Wow, what a wide gap. Is their something we're supposed to be watching out for? This is just the camera without accessories in all instances. How do we know it is all apples to apples? With that that wide of a range in price could there possibly be something missing if we go for the lowest price at thecamerapros.com?
Thanks for your input on this. I'm sure it will help us avoid unwanted surprises.
    TIA,
    Ken

It has been said twice, but I want to say it a third time. Watch out for grey market sellers. Grey market online shops are everywhere, and do a very good job of looking like reputable retailers (they even advertise in the back of trade mags). A lot of these shops operate in the NYC/Brooklyn area. At the very least, try to research any retailer you're thinking of buying from. (there's a lot of horror stories about people who've bought from gray market vendors).
If you're going to purchase online/mail, use B&H or get a recommendation from a seasoned pro. Otherwise, for your own protection, buy from a brick and mortar shop.

  • I I made a PDF fie to preview, but am still apprehensive to actually order the book, as I have ordered some prints of photos after I thought i had them cropped correctly and prints returned with heads, half of bodies have a book formatted and ready to buy

I have formatted a photo book, but am apprehensive to push the "buy" button as I have ordered prints that I thought were cropped correctly, and they returned with heads cut off and half of bodies mising.  I have put the book on a PDF file as instucted, please reassure me that if everything looks right there, that is the way the book will look??

If the PDF looks good then the printed copy should be OK.  The only problem you might run into is the color rendering.  As long as none of your photos use the sRGB profile and not the Adobe RGB color profile the color should be fine.
On those prints that were cropped incorrectly: did you copy them to the print size ordered before uploading for printing? If not then they will be cropped by the printing equipment and you'll lose part of the top and bottom of the print (for landscape prints).

  • Ready to buy mini - but don't want obsolete product

Here is a problem I see more and more with Apple. I am a longtime user (since 1984). It used to be you'd buy a machine and know it would be a stable product for three or four years. No big changes. Twice in the last two years I have made major investments in desktop and laptop machines only to have new models come out a few months later. Not good. Of course the employees don't know when these releases are coming, or can't tell you, or both. Now I want a mini ipad but I don't want to have it obsolete in two or three months when it comes out with retina display for about the same price. Apple has shortened its product launch windows, no solution for this from my end or any user end. I just wish Apple didn't get so flaky about constant new releases. There should be some sort of discount or guarantee if a new version comes out, say, within three months.

Given the small screen size I probably won't shoot myself when it comes with retina. The slower chip is an issue though. I know the iPad is wonderful and probably more stable in some ways... but it is bulky. So the choice is between the two since there is not much price difference overall. I mean the retina Ipad, not the 2.

  • Almost ready to throw in the Apple Towel :(

Hi guys im really hoping someone can help me here as after 5 days of googling and pointless visits to the Apple store im still unable to use my Imac (mid2011).
A little background i bought it 2nd hand from Ebay and it came installed with Windows 7 but for some reason no install OSX partition. I know i should have verified before buying it that it had OSX installed but i didnt. Correspondance with the seller brings up that he also doesnt have the Install discs anymore. I visited the Apple store and was told that they no longer sell hard copies of Snow Leopard and id have to download via Macstore...bare in mind ive explained to them i have no access so they tell me to purchase online. I couldnt wait and found a computer shop and bought the only version of SL they had...the 10.6.3 family pack...so at great expense i just took it home with me eager to get my Mac up and running. Off course thats where problems started on trying to install i recieved 3 beeps and the install hung at the apple logo. Online googling seemed i had faulty memory however i swapped over and my memory was fine so another expense as the memory wasnt the problem and windows worked fine. Another googling session revealed i should wipe the drive totally...so with the aid of a good linux boot cd i formatted the drive and lost the abilty to boot windows. So im now at the point where i have the drive formatted to hfs+ but STILL im getting 3 beeps Ive pretty much had enough which is a shame as its a nice addition to my studio. Another problem is i can find the seriel number because the previuose owner has modified the stand so it can be rotated...which has been done to a really good level and its great for some things...however i now cant determin the seriel number to even make a call to apple to get replacement cds!!
PLEASE ANY help right now would be greatful as im absolutly stumped
    Thanks in advance

There's not really a generic disc (actually there are two discs; the second one has bundled software - iLife mostly - and Apple Hardware Test).
However, the given info might be about enough to get one that will work. I'd hope if there was a doubt they'd go for the higher OS version. The hardware drivers are likely to be the same for at least a batch.
That info identifies it as an iMac12.1,
EveryMac identifies that as having shipped with 10.6.6 with a build no. of 10J4026, but it could have also shipped with 10.6.7 build 10J4139.
    Ref: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159?viewlocale=en_US
That should be enough to get the right disc, but the serial no. would have clinched it.
Enough to try anyway. I believe they charge around $16 per disc handling and postage (they have to burn the discs for you).
    Hope it comes good.

I have deauthorized newer PC and authorized $25.00 can't buy online via store asking security questions tried twice locks out>>>>>

You will be asked 2 of your security questions the first time that you try to buy something on a new computer or deive. If you don't know their answers and you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address then see if the instructions on this user tip helps : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4551
