Alpha channel showing in preview

If I import a .psd file that has an alpha channel, it shows in the preview. Does anyone know how I can eliminate the alpha channel in the preview. iView has a specific option for this but I can't seem to find anything similar in Aperture.

You have to open the .psd file in photoshop and add a empty channel as the first one in the channel list.

  • Alpha channel showing black background

    Hello... I'm importing a logo from Photoshop that is on a transparent alpha channel. It looks fine in Photoshop... no background (other than the checkerboard). When I bring it into Final Cut there is a black box around the logo image. I have tried reverse alpha, switching between straight, black, white, none, etc. with no result. Does anyone know a solution? I am, of course, on deadline.

    There is a huge section of the manual and hlp system devoted to successfully moving stuff from PS or CS2 to FCP. Depending on how well you can drive PS, there are many ways to lose the alpha information or to just fail to export it properly. You're going to find it is a simple user error but it's impossible to even begin suggesting stuff from here. The first thing to check is that your file is RGB, not CMYK. Are you exporting a format that supports alpha? If you open the file you exported back into POS, what does the alpha do?
    Stick with it, you'll figure it out. Try another route , try another file.

  • Alpha Channel errors

    Hello,
    I'm working with some uncompressed Quicktimes in Final Cut 6 that have built in alpha channels, but they are not working properly when placed over other footage in my timeline. I just get a black background where the video from the track below should be appearing.
    The strange thing is I've used these exact same quicktime's successfully in Final Cut 5, but now they aren't working. Also, when I view the clips alpha channel in the preview window the alpha channel displays correctly.
    Does anyone know what's going on?

    I'm just guessing... but in maybe it has something to do with your settings in the canvas window. Those three buttons across the top of the window- click on the one on the right (looks like a little square thingy) and make sure you have alpha + RGB selected. Maybe that'll do it.

  • Alpha channels really have messed up thumbnails and Previews

    In AP2 I use to have to put a blank (all white) layer above any alpha channels so the thumbnails would build properly. Now in Ap3 The thumbnails and Previews are screwed up so they are totaly unrecognizable or not showing up at all even after deleting and re generating them. I've placed a bug report with apple but I need a solution or a work around fast.

    When you look at the songs in your Music library in iTunes, does the artist name have any punctuation in the artist column?
    I know with some MP3's I ripped from CD before iTunes was available, I had put both title and artist in the title field, and until I corrected them they didn't show up correctly on my iPod.

  • Photoshop CC is not showing save "Alpha Channels" to be checked!

    This hasn't happened before!   As in... it didn't happen as recently as yesterday.
    I have a 3 layer image, 2 of them with a large transparent area.  I will be importing this into After Effects.
    It allows me to check "layers" but not to preserve the transparency.  "Alpha Channels" is greyed out.
    When I import into AE, even in the media browser the transparency is gone.  The transparent area is now black.  Ditto when I drag it into the composition canvas.
    Mode = RGB, 18 bit
    When I import the files from yesterday that *did* preserve the transparency, they still keep the transparency.  So I know it's not a problem in AE.
    This is where it gets super weird.  When I take yesterday's file, open it, and try to save it under a new name -- TODAY IT DOESN'T ALLOW ME TO CHECK "ALPHA CHANNELS".
    What have I done to take this option away?

    Indeed, I did not have that.
    So I added a channel, and it automatically showed up as Alpha 1...... and my whole image turned red.
    When I turned off the image channel, it went back to normal.
    Am I possessed?

  • Alpha Channel Not Showing On Video Clips

    I have imported several video clips that I know have Alpha Channels, but when I import them into the timeline/sequence, the ALPHA Channel is appearing as a black background.  What am I doing wrong or what setting should I check??

  • Thumbnail/Preview Alpha Channels

    Hi there,
    I'd like to be able to script/set the Bridge to browse images by Alpha Channel rather than RGB (I have lots of images with similar RGB but unique Alphas).
    Does anyone know if this would be possible or where to start?

    Hello, mi format plugin loads a rgba image. I see it with transparency, that's ok, but when I go to the channels tab I only see 4 items (RGB, Red, Green and Blue).

    OK, something must be wrong... but I don't find it!
    That's my whole code (resumed). I ommit some code (saving file code (not used) or main function, where I only call te "DoSomething" functions. You can see that I use layers. The DoReadContinue function is only used to show the preview.
    In the DoReadStart function I set the parameters for the layers (and the preview), and I fill the "data" and "layerName" params in the DoReadLayerContinue function. I hope you can understand the code!

    And that's the image that I obtain loading a 8 layer image:
    The layers have transparency (when I set "transparencyPlane" to  -1, or 0, or 1, or 2, or 3, or 4....., I got the same result!). The blending mode is still "normal". I had set it to "linear dodge" The "isVisible" param works OK.
    Alpha 1 is still black.
    Is possible that I need to set something in the .r file? I had to add "FormatLayerSupport { doesSupportFormatLayers }," to manage layers, for instance.

  • Alpha Channel Question

    Hello,
    I have an animation with a white drop shadow on it that I animated in Aftereffects.  I export the file from Aftereffects and no matter what I try the white drop shadow shows up as a dark shadow every time in Premiere as if it's matted with black.  So I'm wondering if there is a setting I'm missing or something I need to do differently when importing to Premiere, or even when exporting from aftereffects, although I've exporting it several different way so far to no avail.
    So here is what I have,
    I'm using Adobe CS4 for AE and Premiere, on Windows 7
    When I export from AE I'm using the color setting for unmatted (and I've tried it matted with black too just for fun, clearly that didn't work out for me:)
    I've tried it as an avi and as a mov file too.
    Sooo, in case your answer is for me to use Dynamic Link, I can't get that to work either.  And I'm sure that is just user error since I've never used it before.  I can get the aftereffects sequence to show up in my project files in Premiere, I can even get the animation to show up and play in the preview monitor, but when I put it on my Premiere sequence over the background it doesn't show up, just seems like a blank layer.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for your replies!  So I'm not very good at explaining myself.  I did export (and by export i mean, make movie by adding it to the render queue) the file as both of you are recommending.  As a movie file, with an alpha channel, all one file.  The reason I was trying to do it separate next was because it wasn't displaying properly that way.
    Finally, what I did as a work around, is just export the background I was using from premiere, import it into aftereffects, Put everything together in aftereffects and then render the finished file without using an alpha at all.  In pic #1 so you can see how premiere cs4 won't properly display an animation with a white shadow behind it if it's imported with an alpha channel and placed on top of a background.  #2 shows how it was supposed to look.. how it looked once I put everything together in Aftereffects instead.  I just thought there should be a way to fix my problem without the extra step of exporting the background.  But I don't think there is.

    You can use the free command line image processing tool ImageMagick in your Applescripts or Automator workflows, as well as from a Terminal shell.
    You can download ImageMagick from http://www.imagemagick.org, but Cactuslab has simplified installation by putting together an installer package. It’s available at  http://cactuslab.com/imagemagick/. Download the package and double-click on it. Follow the instructions to install. It will install ImageMagick into /opt/ImageMagick and add it to your $PATH by creating a file in /etc/paths.d/. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
    The two ImageMagick commands we’re concerned with are “convert” and “mogrify”. Convert is more efficient for multiple and piped operations on the same image file, and mogrify is more efficient for batch processing. Generally speaking, convert will output a file separate from the input file. Unless a path is specified, mogrify will overwrite the input file with the output file. An important distinction.
    You can perform various operations on the alpha channel using arguments after either the convert or mogrify command. Two of the available arguments are:
    -alpha off - Disables the image's transparency channel. Does not delete or change the existing data, just turns off the use of that data.
    -alpha remove - Composite the image over the background color.
    Also of use are the -flatten and -background options:
    -flatten - overlay all the image layers into a final image and may be used to underlay an opaque color to remove transparency from an image.
    -background - sets the background color.
    Start off using the convert command with a single image to see the effect and adjust to your liking. Once you’ve achieved the desired outcome, then use the mogrify command to batch process the chosen images.
    Before getting into how to use Automator or Applescript in your workflow, use Terminal and the command line to see the effect on a single image. Copy one image to your ~/Desktop. In Terminal change the directory to ~/Desktop by typing the following command and pressing the Enter key:
    cd ~/Desktop
    Then choose the option you are looking for, -alpha remove for instance, type the following command and press the Enter key:
    convert input-photo.png -alpha remove output-photo.png
    You can check the alpha channel (transparency) and background in the Preview app, go View > Show Image Background from the menu bar.
    Once you’re ready to batch proces, place all the photos you want to convert with the same command into one folder. Copy the folder to your ~/Desktop. Let’s assume you’ve labeled the folder “InPhotos”. It’s prudent to manipulate copies in case something goes amiss. In that event you can copy the folder with the originals again and start over. Create a new empty folder on your ~/Desktop and call it “OutPhotos”. Let’s also assume your home directory is called “Me”. The following command will process the photos from the InPhotos folder and put them in the OutPhotos folder:
    mogrify -alpha remove -path /Users/me/Desktop/OutPhotos/ /Users/me/Desktop/InPhotos/*png
    According to Apple Technical Note TN2065:
    "when you use just a command name instead of a complete path, the shell uses a list of directories (known as your PATH) to try and find the complete path to the command. For security and portability reasons, do shell script ignores the configuration files that an interactive shell would read"
    So, you need to use the full path to to ImageMagick commands, unlike in the shell where you can just use the command name.
    To batch process using Automator, use the “Run Shell Script” action (note: retain the single space at the beginning of the last line):

  • Aperture, photoshop layers and Alpha channels - notes

    In examining Aperture 2.0 to see if I could use it instead of Adobe bridge in my workflow (which makes intense use of Photoshop) I found that Aperture (and, apparently, OS X) cannot properly display a preview for a .psd file with either layers or an alpha channel. In some cases, the preview image is simply an error message, in others the alpha channel is displayed as black. These problems make Aperture a non-starter for me.
    Searching this forum for information, solutions, and/or workarounds, I found some references, but nothing of high value. (Sorry, posters.) Started my own investigation, and discovered some things that might lead to a reasonable workaround. My notes are here:

    I don't know if that helps in your workflow, but the way I handle this is:
    • import the raw file into Aperture
    • open in external editor (i.e. PhotoShop; external editor format: tiff)
    • edit in PhotoShop

    • here two things are to be considered:
    _ the file extension used by PS is "tif", so it has to be changed to "tiff"

    • Aperture automatically refreshes the saved file.
    This way I end up with just this one extra file. The whole procedure would be a bit simpler using referenced files instead of storing them in the library.
    My settings in PS do have the "Maximize Compatibility" option set (in the notebooked example, it's set to "ask", normally it's set to "always"). I'm using CS2. Maybe this setting works in CS3 to create the composite? I've heard several people here say that same thing, but it definitely doesn't do it for me...
    For me this works, and as far as I remember also worked in CS2; do you see a difference in file size between files saved both ways? How does Preview.app display the file saved with "Maximize Compatibility"?
    Since my first post, I've been trying to figure out how to add a PS action that would run an Applescript to tell GraphicConverter to open and close a file, creating a preview. But it seems that while an Applescript can trigger a Postscript action, the reverse (having a Postscript action trigger an Applescript) is not possible.
    Might something like a hot folder with an automator scripts attached to it be a possible workaround?

  • Clipping Path vs Alpha Channel

    Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but wondering which is better for outlined images (no soft transitions, just hard outline.)
    I've used both and don't see an advantage to either EXCEPT when converting an InDesign file to PDF. Files with PSDs with clipping paths seem to make much larger pdfs than same file using PSD with alpha channel. Not important for a final press file, but when I have to email screen proofs, then it's a big deal.
    Anyone care to weigh in? Thanks.

    I found this discussion during a search for alpha channels vs. clipping paths for clipping (for a job I'm working on), and thought I'd offer my own feedback based on my own experiences w/ similar files. I can't really offer a printer perspective, however, although we do work closely with many and also print film fairly regularly for local printers who are not yet Direct-To-Plate.
    For what it's worth, I use paths, myself, and save the file as a TIFF. Then I use the Object: Clipping Path menu in InDesign to select the path (I don't specifically designate a path as an actual clipping path in Photoshop anymore, as sometimes an image will have more than one path to isolate different elements).
    I find that alpha channels don't look very good when used in InDesign. They're just not that smooth/precise, in my admittedly limited use.
    I've uploaded a quick sample to http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr222/Xiebinrui/Alpha_vs_Clipping.jpg -- it's pretty self-explanatory, but the left side shows the bottom of an image using an alpha channel created from the original clipping path (cmd-click on the path to create a selection and then click the "create channel" button in the Channels tab, which automatically creates an "Alpha 1" channel), with the original clipped version on the right. I've tried adjusting the threshold and tolerance in InDesign, but it just always looks bad.
    I also haven't used the behemoth Photoshop EPS format since my QuarkXPress/Mac OS 9 days (even then, it eventually became possible to use TIFFs w/ clipping paths -- I could finally see my photo correctly instead of with the horrible Quark EPS preview).
    Anyway, re: alpha channels, maybe it's just that I don't know the right way to use them, but they don't seem to be very smooth when importing into InDesign (I was working on a job yesterday and today for which I had to download hi-res images from the client -- many of which used alpha channels instead of actual paths, but they're used on white backgrounds in InDesign, so I just didn't use the channels).
    So, anyway, I personally use and recommend paths (vector masks, as Artdirectorringo mentioned, seem to work fine, too) as opposed to standard pixel-based alpha channels, in general, if you're going to be placing the file into InDesign.

  • Issue (aka bug):  File compatibility and alpha channels

    When I enable file compatibility mode on photoshop (so that previews and thumbnails show up), the thumbnail and preview will be wrong when there's an alpha channel in the channel palette. Specifically, the thumbnail will be masked by the top-most alpha channel in the channel palette. Consequently, there is sort of a work-around--if you create a plain white alpha channel and make sure it's the top-most alpha channel in the palette, then the preview and thumbnail come out fine. Luckily, this requires negligible extra memory.
    If there's no alpha channel or I don't save alpha channels, the preview/thumbnail looks fine.
    In spite of the work-around, a fix would be nice. It'd also be nice if there was a way to have a preview/thumbnails in Finder without the large memory penalty of compatibility mode.

    Yes, everything in Bridge works great. However, the search function in Bridge is SLOW and a bit flaky (same problem on the Windows side as well) so I like to use spotlight instead for searching. Additionally, I like to use iPhoto to create collections of images that will contain photoshop files as well as others.
    For now, it is workable for me to just use compatibility mode in photoshop and make sure all images with alpha channels have an all-white alpha channel at the top of the stack. The file size penalty is tolerable for now. If Apple ever fixes things on their end, then it's a simple script to convert my psd files back again.

  • Layered Photoshop files with alpha channels

    I wondered if anyone had a work around for the problem of layered PSD files with alpha channels not previewing properly in Aperture 3.1.1. I know it's been an issue in previous versions of Aperture but I thought Apple would have sorted this by now, or am I asking too much?

    I tested a file last night as follows:
    Sent file via 'Edit with Photoshop CS5' (as PSD 8-bit, sRGB color space) > changed background to normal layer > created circular selection around subject and inverted to remove most of image leaving transparent area (about 70% of image) > saved file > closed Photoshop > file updated in Aperture with black filling in the transparent area.
    Resent the PSD back to Photoshop (which opened correctly with transparent area) > created two new layers and sent one to background > filled new background layer with White and left top new layer transparent > saved again and closed Photoshop > file updated in Aperture with white showing in transparent areas (no black).
    AFAIK, this is how it is designed to work.
    My only other suggestion would be for you to create a new empty library (press Option while launching Aperture > Create New..) and then import one RAW or JPEG file and test.
    Note - you can reset Photoshop by holding down 'Command + Option + Shift' immediately after launching Photoshop and clicking 'Yes', then set the 'Maximize Compatibility...' to 'Always' again. Doing this prior to sending the file from new library would probably be best.
    Apologies in advance if you have already tried this and for outlining procedures that you are already familiar with (just not sure what level Photoshop user you are).
