[alsa]how to get surround 5.1 on every apps? how to tweak asound.conf?

Hello,
I have a laptop dell studio xps 1647 with IDT 92HD73C1X5 chipset. I have Alsa only (no pulseaudio with which I had problem running Spotify and Kde)
I spent time reading and searching information but I do not understand everything about the way alsa and up/down mixing is running.
I have some questions:
1. On my laptop, I have 2 front and one subwoofer. So it means that I have 2.1 soundsystem right? But on Windows (and Linux), I have the greatest sound quality putting 5.1 sound with IDT software. Why ? How does it work ? Why don't I have better sound putting 2.1 option ??
2. When I was running with Pulseaudio, I was stuck to 4.0 sound according with this issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=111727 and no way to put 5.1 sound on smplayer (for example). Now that I removed pulseaudio, I can run 5.1 sound on smplayer and enjoy pretty good quality sound with movies. BUT this is apparently the only apps with which I can do this. Amarok doesn't seem to use 5.1, neither do Audacious or kde notifications or whatever apps I use. How can I change it ?? Because There is a real quality difference between sound on smplayer and on other apps.
3. I tried to change my asound.conf with this one: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18371907/asoundrc but of course it is made for a specific laptop. So it does'nt work at all (no sound). I do not really understand how it works. Is there some wiki about tweaking asound.conf with all these options ??
4. When I run
speaker-test -c 6 -D surround51 -t wav
I have every sound but LFE.
What is exactly LFE ? How can I enable it ??
5. Pulseaudio or not Pulseaudio ?? If I do not wanna use network possibilities of pulseaudio, there is no other interest in it right ? there is no better quality sound with it ??
6. what is exactly S/PDIF ?? and how do I know if I have analog or digital system ??? what does it change ?

Is it "quality", or just loudness?
You want to get the "LFE" (subwoofer) working - try this:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6-dmic

Hi all... I moved my system from Ubuntu recently and am having one small issue that I haven't been able to solve; everything else is working great and I'm about ready to move all of my other systems to Arch also, once I've solved this. :-)
The one nagging issue I'm having is with sound. This is a fiber digital connection that was working on the ubuntu install and a couple other distros I play with, but I haven't been able to find the issue in Arch. Sound comes out of only the front-left and front-right speakers. When I do the sound test, it lists all of the other 7.1 speakers, but no sound out of anything other than the front 2 speakers. I noticed that I don't have an asound.conf, so I was wondering if that might help or if it's not needed with Arch?

If anyone has managed to get surround sound working out of more than just the front 2 speakers, I'd love to hear how you did it. ;-)
Mine is connected via digital, so it's beginning to look like I need to set spdif up somehow.
But... Now that I think about it, it 'should' be pretty easy since all I basically need is for it to force all raw audio out the fiber digital connection since the receiver actually handles all of the decoding (dang....it worked great in Ubuntu, now if I can just figure it out in Arch). LOL

I am using compressor to create files for authoring DVDs using DVD Studio Pro 4. I want to get surround sound 5.1. How do I go about doing it? I have using Dolby 2.0 so far. Thanks for your help.

Well, in order to get 5.1 surround sound, you would have to mix the sound in 5.1 surround. Pro Tools and Soundtrack Pro 2 (the one in Final Cut Studio 2) can both do this.

I have a new TouchSmart 520z. I believe it has an integrated soundcard. When I purchased it I was told that surround sound speakers would work. I purchased the Logitech 5.1 speaker system. I don't have any color coded RCA receptacles on the system. I have a mic and earphone receptacle on the left side and a sub and another receptacle just below it with a design on the rear that I am not sure of. I placed the green RCA plug in the bottom receptacle on the back and get sound out of the two front speakers and subwoofer. Don't know where to plug in the center and rear speaker plugs. I have a feeling that this system does not support surround sound. I configured my settings to surround sound 5.1. Need some help. Thanks.

Did some tests...
If I change the default audio device to the integrated audio device in the mainboard I get the same. Changing the bitrate in itunes or in the windows settings does not help either...
Anyone has a similar problem?
Or anyone has a similar setup and actually gets surround sound from itunes?
I rather keep renting and buying films through itunes and not switch to some other shop...

I'm developing a web-app using Struts that will be accessed by Portal (I guess as a URL-based app). The web-app will not require login. The web-app will not be Portal "aware", except that it requires the SSO userid for auditing/logging purposes.
I know little about Portal and SSO. How can Portal be configured to send the Portal userid of the logged-in Portal user? Can it send it as a parameter in a GET or POST?
The version of Portal will be 9.0.2 (or greater).

The app took over $35 from my account and there is no way this was authorized. Please advise on how I can recover these funds.

They did the same thing to me on 12/24/11. Apple overcharged me 3 times my purchase amount and have caused my bank account to be overdrawn!
I called my bank to make a statement of unauthorized charges AND filed a complaint with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). Apple provided no way to contact a live rep and the email reps have been useless...so they left me no other option.
I think they do this to their customers very often. It is extremely dishonest.
I actually posted the above info on this discussion community earlier today...and Apple deleted it! If that isn't an admission of guilt, I don't know what is.

There are two separate calendars on ipad (ios 7.1) one for icloud, one fo exchange. I have tried a couple of calendar apps and while they do a good job of showing the events in the app - they don't push (synch) back to iCloud. Any thoughts on an app that will take my ipad calendars and synch them to a single icloud calendar/account?

If you are saying that after signing into iCloud it is telling you device is not found, it could be for any number of reasons. If the battery is dead, if the SIM has been removed, or if someone else has the phone and they have restored it, it will not be shown. Also, if you located it once and then sent a remote wipe, it disables the abililty to locate the phone with Find My iPhone.

Installation and setup of ADR was so complex that I was forced to find a simpler workaround.
I found that a substitute function (75 percent of what I need) is built into Skype.   It's a pain, but it works.
I'd want to get my money back for this expensive Apple Remote Desktop.    I never got the software to work, not even once.
I can't find anywhere that the App Store gives any sort of money-back guarantee.
