Alter database ...
Hi,
alter database backup controlfile to trace
to which trace file the control file is copied ?Is it alert.log in bdump (background dump)?
Is control file backed up to trace automatically or we do need to execute the command ?
if we do need to apply the archive logs then can we backup the control file to trace and start apllying the archive logs?
Thanks,
AUM
to which trace file the control file is copied ?The one with most recent timestamp.
Is it alert.log in bdump (background dump)?Not by default
Is control file backed up to trace automatically no
or we do need to execute the command ?There is no "need" to execute the command. DB runs fine without it.
if we do need to apply the archive logsapply logs to WHAT exactly & WHY?
then can we backup the control file to trace and start apllying the archive logs?no
the file that results is a text file.
What problem are you actually trying to solve.
I suggest you spend some time Reading The Fine Manuals at http://tahiti.oracle.com

If i have to shutdown the instance and database then
WHAT IS THE USE OF 'ALTER DATABASE CLOSE' ?
I need explanation. Why should i shutdown?
Dont give me this answer.
ORA-16196: database has been previously opened and closed
Cause: The instance has already opened and closed the database, which is allowed only once in its lifetime.
Action: Shut down the instance.If you read the documentation you will see that there is no ALTER DATABASE CLOSE command.
This is an undocumented Oracle command, which we are not supposed to use. Consequently we are not allowed to complain about the way that it works. Instead we're supposed to use SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE.

ThanksWhen you want to perform ddl statements in a (anonymous) PL/SQL block, you have to use dynamic SQL because ddl is not possible in pl/sql.
Dynamic sql means that you sort of execute ddl statements in a sql manner. To use dynamic sql, two options exist:
- dbms_sql package : for oracle before 8i. To use this package is not always easy. Read about it carefully first before using.
- Native Dynamic SQL : implemented in 8i and very easy to use. An example would be :
declare
lv_statement varchar2(32676);
begin
lv_statement := 'ALTER TABLE MY_TABLE DISABLE CONSTRAINT MY_TABLE_CK1';
execute immediate lv_statement;
lv_statement := 'ALTER TABLE MY_TABLE ENABLE CONSTRAINT MY_TABLE_CK1';
execute immediate lv_statement;
end;
Good luck.

'alter database open resetlogs' didn't reset one of the datafiles
I've spent the last three and a half weeks recovering an oracle database (11g 64-bit linux) because of a corrupt block in an online redo log (which I thought was being written to multiple locations). I restored the files, moving some of them around in the process; recovered to the latest possible point; moved files back to their proper location; ran 'alter database open resetlogs'; and one of the datafiles (from a bigfile tablespace) didn't get reset. I checked afterward, and it was marked offline. I do not remember placing the file offline, and cannot find such a statement in my last 300 sqlplus commands, which includes commands well before I renamed this file and the commands surrounding the rename.
Restoring/recovering the database again will take too long, and is a remarkably poor option. Even if the database had opened correctly, the affected tablespace would not have been touched in the two or three minutes the database was open. Is there any way to force oracle to reset the logs again or otherwise fix this one file to mark it with the same date? Only allowing the resetlogs option after an incomplete recovery seems a poor restriction, especially, if files can slip through like this. I'm suspecting there is someway to just fix the checkpoint values for the tablespace, but I don't know where to begin. This particular file is <5% of the database, so if I have to do some sort of backup/restore with just it, that is probably doable.0: 11.1.0.6.0 on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2

2:

restore datafile X; --several files were restored individually
recover database until scn 1137554504; -- I verified that all datafiles were on the same checkpoint after this finished. Not having placed any files offline, I didn't bother checking that.

With the Partitioning, OLAP and Data Mining options
4: Nothing in the tablespace has been touched since I ran 'alter database open resetlogs;'. It also appears that oracle placed the file offline (without me telling it to do so) and left it that way through the resetlogs, leaving the tablespace unusable during the time it was opened. The only things that would be out of date are the 'RESETLOGS_CHANGE#', the 'CHECKPOINT_CHANGE#', and associated values. It's still at the last scn before the resetlogs, and the system has been in archivelog mode the entire time. This is all information that Oracle could be tracking, and from a program logic standpoint there is no reason why Oracle cannot tie together the changes before the resetlogs, the resetlogs command and the changes after the resetlogs into a new, continuous string of changes. I assume there is some such feature in a high-caliber program because I'm actually a programmer (who would have included such advanced tracking features), and I've become a DBA out of necessity. I admit to not knowing all of the oracle DBA commands, hence me posting here before doing the work of submitting a request to metalink.
5: I consider it a poor restriction because it doesn't always reset the logs on all files, and as far as my knowledge goes it has rendered my 3.5 week recovery process WORTHLESS. I suppose it could cause numerous errors, especially if the database wasn't cleanly shut down, but having the ability to do something equivalent to datafiles that oracle skipped the process on seems quite useful in my situation. I guess the more fundamental problem to complain about is that it would apply such changes to only some of the files, while leaving others unusable, instead of just giving me an error that some files weren't going to be reset, but I think I'm done venting my Oracle frustrations for now.
Am I stuck with a tablespace that I cannot bring online with the database open, or is there some sort of 'alter database datafile' command (or anything else) that I know nothing of that will fix the straggling file?

juniour oracle dbadamorgan,
He is running 8.1.7.0. "DataGuard" scripts were initially available for 9i and then
backported (and available as a seperate download) for 8i. Many 8i implementations
did not and do not use DataGuard.
Even if it is "Jurassic" {which it certainly is NOT}, they obviously do have a good
reason for setting up a standby -- they DO have data of value. So, maybe they have
not upgraded to 9i or 10g. There could be a dozen reasons
1. Server HW/OS doesn't support 9i/10g, not budgetting for Server upgrade
2. Application using Forms 2.x or 4.5 and not tested on 9i / 10g (4.5 not certified
on 9i)
3. Low end client PCs working perfectly with Character-mode forms, not powerful
enought to run Jinitiator and Forms 6i / 9i
Just because someone hasn't upgraded to 10g doesn't mean that they are at fault
when you do NOT know the reason why they have not upgraded.
Surely, they do know that 8i is desupported. Don't you think that their management
has undertaken due diligence / cost-benefit analysis in considering whether they
should upgrade to 10g ?
Maybe they have another project implementing 10g in parallel and will be able
to shutdown this environment soon. Maybe they don't need to do so.
Do understand that people are intelligent enough to make their own decisions
considering their particular circumstances and don't go shooting off with your
assumption that anyone not running 10g is a dinosaur. -
ORA-1113 signalled during: alter database open...
Hello,
Today when I was unable to logon to my Oracle 9i database on Windows machine, I referred to the Alter.log file.
This file showed me the above error.
And when I try to logon to database with normal user, I get the error as "Database initialization or shutdown is in progress"
When I tried to log on using the DBA privileges, I can see that my Database is MOUNTED.
What should I do next? Do I bring the database down forcefully using the "Shutdown abort" command? and then at the startup when some datafile is shown as required to recovery then, recover the datafile using following command:

Please guide

Alter database recover to logical standby is hanging
Hi,
when I try to convert my physical standby to logical standby using
alter database recover to logical standby STANDBYL;
the command just hangs
I have seen the usual hit on this which is to create the Redo Dictionary on the Primary using
execute dbms_logstdby.build;
which I did but the alter database command still keeps hanging on my Standby
Any ideas,
thanks
JimHello;
Does your Standby alert log have any lines like this:

If yes look for the message ( after this )

What is the Use of "Alter database activate standby database"
Hi ,
I appreciate your time.
I just wanted to know what is the use of "Alter database activate standby database" command when doing the failover. How different it will act in failover process. Can we use this command in SwitchOver.
Thanks in advance.Hi Uwe Hesse,
Wonderfull... good info....
So my understanding is that the use of "ACTIVATE PHYSICAL STANDBY DATABASE" is conditional and depends on the redo log gap and the Database status(Able to mount or not).
Condition 1: If the Db is in Mount state and Redo log gap is successfully filled.
1) Flush any unsent redo from the primary database to the target standby database.
SQL> ALTER SYSTEM FLUSH REDO TO target_db_name;
Note: If the above Statement Completes successfully without any errors.
2) Stop Redo Apply.
SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;
3) Finish applying all received redo data.
SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE FINISH;
4) Verify that the target standby database is ready to become a primary database.
SQL> SELECT SWITCHOVER_STATUS FROM V$DATABASE;
5) Switch the physical standby database to the primary role.
SQL> ALTER DATABASE COMMIT TO SWITCHOVER TO PRIMARY WITH SESSION SHUTDOWN;
Condition 2: If the DB is not able Mount and Redo Gap can't be filled.
Important Note: If the the above command in STEP3 gives error, some received redo data was not applied. Try to resolve the cause of the error and re-issue the statement before proceeding.
If the error condition cannot be resolved, a failover can still be performed (with some data loss) by issuing the following SQL statement on the target standby database:
SQL> ALTER DATABASE ACTIVATE PHYSICAL STANDBY DATABASE;
Thanks in advance. -
How to alter database character set from AL32UTF8 to EE8MSWIN1250
Hi folks,
I'm using an Oracle 10g, XE database, which has a database character set set to AL32UTF8, what causes that some characters like "č ť ř ..." are not displayed.
To fix this issue, I would like to change it to EE8MSWIN1250 character set as it's set on server.
Unfortunatelly below steps don;t work for me:
connect sys as sysdba;
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE;
STARTUP MOUNT;
ALTER SYSTEM ENABLE RESTRICTED SESSION;
ALTER SYSTEM SET JOB_QUEUE_PROCESSES=0;
ALTER SYSTEM SET AQ_TM_PROCESSES=0;
ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
ALTER DATABASE NATIONAL CHARACTER SET EE8MSWIN1250;
ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET EE8MSWIN1250;
SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE; -- or SHUTDOWN NORMAL;
STARTUP;Value in regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\KEY_XE is set to CZECH_CZECH REPUBLIC.EE8MSWIN1250
I'm struggling with this issue for hours and unfortunatelly can't make it work. Any advise is more than welcome.
Thanks,
Tomas
I tried to use hints listed here , but always getting some ORA messages.Hi Sergiusz,
Thank you for your reply. You're right, I've probably didn't provide a full details about my issue, but at least now I know, that database encoding(characterset) is correct.
Here is my issue:
Within my APEX application I would like to use a JasperReportsIntegration, so to be able to create and run iReports straight from APEX application. Installation, and implementation of JasperReports works fine, I had no issue with it.
As a second step I've created a simple report using iReport tool, when if preview function is used, all static characters (from report labels) are displayed correctly. Database items are displayed incorectly - some Czech characters are not displayed. Language within report is set to cs_CS, but I've tried also other options. No sucess.
When I run that report from APEX application (from server) then the same issue - data from database are returned without some czech characters.
Kind regards,
Tomas -
Alter Database Remove File : Partition Files on different folders
I need to remove partition files, once I switch the partition with staging table and empty/truncate the partition.
When I was running the code on my local machine I was passing variable @partition_file_name to following statement:
Declare @partition_file_name varchar(128)='table_abc_201202',
@database_name varchar(128)='test'
Alter Database @database_name Remove File @partition_file_name
Note @partition_file_name is the logical name of the partition file.
I found out partitions are saved in different folders in my Dev env...They are stored in 12 different folders which are named like 1-12.

I am wondering , is SQL server with Alter statement is capable of getting the right path for each partition files and remove them accordingly? Or do I need to pass the physical path to the alter statement to get it removed. Though I tried doing that and
got the error.

Yes, SQL Server knows which physical file goes with which logical filename. (To see that SQL does know this, do a SELECT * FROM sys.sysfiles - you'll see SQL has a row for every logical filename and that row has the corresponding physical file name.)
And when you do the ALTER DATABASE REMOVE FILE, you must specify the logical filename. You will get an error if you give the physical path.

Sql "ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE x OFFLINE" not working??(solved)
Hi all,
I'm playing around with RMAN on a test instance, and am trying to just restore and recover a datafile. I can't see what I'm doing wrong.
I've renamed the users01.dbf file like it is lost...
I get RMAN going...I do a startup mount;
When I try:
RMAN> sql "alter database datafile '/data1/oradata/testdb5/users01.dbf' offline";
sql statement: alter database datafile '/data1/oradata/testdb5/users01.dbf' offline
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03009: failure of sql command on default channel at 04/06/2009 16:13:28
RMAN-10015: error compiling PL/SQL program
Now....I did this with the number of the datafile, and it let me do the offine that way
RMAN> sql "alter database datafile 4 offline";
sql statement: alter database datafile 4 offline
But, I want to try it with the file name, and I can't understand why it is giving me an error.
Any suggestions?
TIA,
cayenne

Try following, you need to put in the single quotes twice.
RMAN> sql "alter database datafile ''/data1/oradata/testdb5/users01.dbf'' offline";Rgds - bigdelboyWow...ok, that was NOT in the book. This did work with double quotes on the outside " but, the datafile quoting required me to use 2 SINGLE quotes around that.
RMAN> sql "alter database datafile ''/data1/oradata/testdb5/users01.dbf'' offline";
sql statement: alter database datafile ''/data1/oradata/testdb5/users01.dbf'' offline
Any explanation for this? Granted the oracle press example was for a windows machine...
