Alternative to disk utility for activating firewire disk?

I have two Firewire harddisks, one for TimeMachine and one for my SuperDuper Backups. Because they make noise and slow down Open/Save dialogues, I like to keep them deactivated most of the time.
So far, I've been using disk utility (is that the English name? - I'm on a German system) for activating them. Is there a faster, more elegant solution than opening the disk utility app and activating the drive?
I've searched high and low but only found some AppleScripts that didn't work reliably.
I would appreciate your help.

I tried the solution offered in the thread that you linked to (in fact, I had tried that solution a couple of times before).
Now I have a script like the following:
do shell script "diskutil mount /dev/disk2s2"
However, this does NOT work reliably. Sometimes the disk does become activated, sometimes it doesn't.
this is probably because the device number for the disk may change and the above command is trying to mount the wrong disk.
try this one
<pre style="
font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
font-size: 10px;
margin: 0px;
padding: 5px;
border: 1px solid #000000;
width: 720px;
color: #000000;
background-color: #ADD8E6;
overflow: auto;"
title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
set diskname to "name of your disk"
set devnumber to do shell script "diskutil list |grep " & diskname & " |awk '{print $6}'"
do shell script "diskutil mount " & devnumber</pre>
put the name of your disk in the above

  • Use an alternative Exchange Rate Type for activity actual price

    Dear All,
I try to use an alternative Exchange Rate (not M)  in controlling area version "0", I need to use a custom currency exchange rate like in planned price (here I create a new planned version with exchange rate "N").
I find same notes and it seems that standard Sap use only Exchange Rate "M" for actual price but I notice that for example in transaction KB21N (activity allocation) system shows in additional info exchange rate "N" (input in version "0").
Is not possibile to use other Exchange Rate for actual price, activity allocation, for confirmed activity in production order?
Controlling area has currency type 30 (group currency EUR), this company has MXN.
Thanks in advance for your support
    Daria

In KB21N (activity allocation), system uses the exchange rate type you have maintained in controlling area version plan settings (transaction OKEQN). Activity allocation during the month always happen at the planned price maintained in KP26 at the exchange rate specified in plan version. During actual price calculation and revaluation during month end, it calculates actual activity price at (uses M rate to convert to controlling area currency) and revaluates consumption.
I think you cannot use other exchange rate, see the coding in include LKSPIF00 that is used in KSII where currency type is hard coded to M, if this is plan price calculation it's picking tka07-kurst.

  • HT2055 Disk Utility for OS X 10.9.2

I need a Disk Utility for OS X 10.9.2 to add disk space to a partition and fix permissions.

You will find Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • How do I access Disk Utility for 10.7.1?

How do I access Disk Utility for 10.7.1? I found it in the forums a few weeks ago, used it, then lost the directions. This is a last ditch attempt
to use OS Lion. I parted my hair incorrectly when I installed and have been plagued by the dread rainbow spinning ball in EVERY application. Yes, every. Name one, Safari, Firefox, Text Edit, Mail, Excel, Word, iTunes, Garage Band, Calculator, Calender, iPhoto....yes, every, and I cannot
find a solution that works. I have back up files on two different hard drives 500 gig and 1 terrabyte with all my music, photo and writing files.
I am a writer and a musician so imagine the frustration. OS 10.6 is an option of course. My dedication to Apple and each new OS is deep so
I am hoping that somehow there will a fix, an upgrade, something that does not require me to go bac to the much more endangered species named OS.
hahhaa! Just stalled waiting for the ball to finish with it's random spinning.... SO, this is like a last desperate .... it just did two more stalls.
NO OTHER apps running, just little Firefox holding on for dear life, last desperate request for a fix.
MacKeeper has been great in sending helpful directions for getting the Antivirus to work after it mysteriously decided to stop working, Quite MacKeeper,  go to Activity Monitor, force quit helper, start up MacKeeper and run program. It works!
SO before my third stall stops me, please post directions to open disk utility in administration mode so that I can do any further repairs that have not worked by using it from the open system. Also keychain synching stopped working with Lion.
Thanks to any and all who can help.

Press and hold Command-R keys and reboot. You'll then start up in the Lion Recovery HD. You'll find Disk Utility there.
    Command-R to the rescue.
Just hold down Command-R during startup and Lion Recovery springs into action. It lets you choose from common utilities: You can run Disk Utility to check or repair your hard drive, erase your hard drive and reinstall a fresh copy of Lion, or restore your Mac from a Time Machine backup. You can even use Safari to get help from Apple Support online. And if Lion Recovery encounters problems, it will automatically connect to Apple over the Internet.

  • Can one PPC Mac run Disk Utility for another's HD?

I have a PPC PowerBook that needs help. The Admin users are getting corrupted for some reason. I can still use other Users in Safe Mode.
I have another good PPC G3 desktop. Both running 10.5.8.
I can mount the bad HD on the good Mac's desktop but I can't run Disk Utility for it.
I've mounted with Ethernet and USB. Do I need Firewire? Do I need do try to use Target Mode?
Basically, I'm trying to use the good Mac as a startup disk for the bad one, I think.
    Easy way? Thanks! JP
ps: My hunch is Firewire. I don't have any so I'm going to buy a cable soon. Unless someone here stops me! : )

Yes, you need Target Mode Firewire on both, a FW cable, then Disk Utility should be fine from one to the other.
    Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Sometimes Laptops need to have the FW cable unplugged & replugged after they'e in t mode to have it finally show up.

  • Since I upgraded to Lion 10.7.2, my external HD is no longer visible in AirPort utility (in the AirPort disks tab). I also installed the AirPort utility for iOS5, it reported a disk problem, but running Disk Utility on the Mac showed no issues. Help!

To expand on the question, I have performed the following steps:
1 - Unplugged external drive (1TB WD MyBook) from the Time Capsule
2 - Reconnected it. At this point, AirPort utility for iOS5 reported a problem with the disk (Time Capsule light was blinking Orange)
3 - Unplugged external drive, connected it to MacBook Pro, ran Disk Utility. It found no problems (disk visible straight away on the MacBook Pro).
4 - Reconnected to Time Capsule - still doesn't show up under the "Disks" option under Air Port utility. Or rather, the hardware is visible (i.e the physical disk) but not the volume.
5 - I tried another external hard drive, and the volume also doesn't appear in the Disk section under the AirPort utility.
The WD disk is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
This is a big problem for me, as the drive houses my iTunes library.
Anyone else had a similar problem? It all worked flawlessly until last week.

    I love computers.
Have managed to fix this already. Been working the issue for a few days now, and a few minutes after writing the above post I decided to reset the Time Capsule to factory default settings.
After entering all my details again (used same network names, passwords etc) the Time Capsule was rebooted. When it came back on line - guess what? Yep, the MyBook WD drive is now visibile. I can connect via the network from my other machines to the drive, and iTunes is back.
So - thought I would post my resolution in case it helps others.

  • What is disk utility for?

what is the function of disk utility under application? can someone tell me how to use it?

    The hatter wrote:
It is used to format drives, repair permission, and has some ability to repair disk errors, though most go with Disk Warrior.
I think thats a very brief summary of what DU can do, and I'd advise you to check the OSX Help for more DU usages. I'd write that DU can also: repair start-up disk, get info on a disk or volume, create a RAID HD array, SMART-based diagnostic for HD failure, transfer or back-up data as a disk image, burn a CD or DVD, protect info on removable media, see contents on disk image, erase and secure erase a disk/volume... etc
I don't think most Mac users head straight to DW either. I may be guessing but I reckon most simply let their Macs run and run using Leopard with no care at all for file system maintenance. Nonetheless DW is useful third-party utility for some forms of file system repair, though many only bother with it if DU or other means of OS X trouble shooting haven't sorted out the issue first.

  • Setting disk quota on Mac server for Active Directory users

I'm having trouble setting disk quotas for Active Directory users with home folders on our Mac server.
I've enabled disk quotas on the disk I'm putting home folders on, and I can set disk quotas for local users on the server just fine. But it doesn't seem to work for Active Directory users. I've tried setting disk quotas via Workgroup Manager and via the command line using edquota. But when I use the repquota command there is no quota entry for the AD user. I've run quotacheck and that didn't help either.
I also understand there's a setquota command but there's no man page on how that works.
Has anyone got disk quota for AD users working.
Better still has someone got a shell or perl script for setting quotas they could post.
    Thanks
    - Cameron

sorry.. I am soooooo stupid... I have to activate "File Sharing" as well.. for the user everything was already pre-activated, not for the AD users, I just saw the Time Machine checkbox grayed out ...

  • What is a good defrag utility for OS X?

Hi, I was wondering what is the recommended defrag utility for 10.4.6. Thanks.

I think that I remember reading that since 10.3, X automatically does it, but I cannot remember for sure.
As the linked article claims, rayray, the OS defrags, but only up to a point.
Firstly, it only defrags files less than 20 Megs in size. This used not to be much of an issue, but in these days of humungous video files and the like, it sometimes can be these days.
Secondly, and significantly, it does not defrag free space. THis isn't much of an issue either when your disk has plenty of free space, but it can certainly become so when things get tight.
Various processes run by Mac OSX require "contiguous" free disk space. A badly fragmented drive may still have quite a few gigabytes of free space, but all of it may be in very small hunks. When the OS needs to write a file all in one place (like a directory extents file, for example), but can't find the room, this can result in very nasty things happening. It may , for example, simply write the file anyway, right over the top of another file.
Until your HD gets down to its last 40 or 50 gigs of free space you don't need to worry. When you DO get down to this sort of level, though, especially if yo are working with very big video files and the like, you need to do something about it. It depends a fair amount on what you are doing with your computer. Some people will get away with it until they are down to the even the last 4 or 5 gigs. Trouble is, if their usage patterns change they may well run into strife.
One solution is to simply "clone" your internal drive to an external, wipe the internal drive, and then clone it back. Make sure the clone really works before you wipe the internal though!
Alternatively , as suggested by Angus, Coriolus's "iDefrag" is the best of the utility bunch for this sort of stuff., I've been using it happily myself for quite some time now.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Utility for Optimizing/Defragging drives?

Any suggestions on a good third-party utility for optimizing/defragging external Firewire drives?
    Thanks -

I think it is rather unfortunate that Apple does not have an official stance on this issue as it pertains for Logic. It is my understanding that it is the responsibility of the operating system to write the actual data to the disk. This allows developers, including developers of the major DAW manufacturers, a certain freedom from having to worry about how that data is written. I would have to think it's very easy for them to make a blanket statement and say: "sure - you should definitely defrag", without fully understanding the details of how OS X maintains its filesystem, and therefore whether or not it's really necessary to do so. Not that they're not incredibly talented programmers - it's just that they don't really need to worry about this stuff, just as I don't have to worry about how TCP/IP works when sending data across a network.
Now, in spite of my skepticism, I admit that I am tempted to try defragging my audio drive to see if helps improve performance, but I have to ask: how does one measure this? Is the disk I/O indicator within Logic a good indicator? Perhaps one of the low-level command line tools within OS X would be better?

  • Can anyone recommend a free maintenance utility for panther ?

I have an iBook running OS 10.3.5 Panther. It is not running as well as it used to despite clearing the hard drive of old files. I think it would benefit from some kind of a maintenance script utility that would clean and optimise the system. This is a spare computer that we use mostly for surfing, email and iTunes, my main computer is a newer Macbook. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good 3rd party downloadable utility for Panther, preferably free or shareware, that I could install and run periodically?

    Hi 12frets56!
"Can anyone tell me what "BSD Subsystem installed" means? .... How would I know if my iBook has this?"
BSD Subsystem is a Unix tool, and numerous applications require it to function.
If I find a more technical definition, I'll post it!
Unless you performed a custom install, and chose to not install it, the BSD subsystem is installed by default when you install Mac OS X.
EDIT: Here ya go Berkeley Software Ditrubution!
Navigate to HD > Library > Receipts. If BSD is installed, the file BSD.pkg will be present.
If it is not installed, repost for further instruction.
As Texas Mac Man (Tom) posted, insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.
    Authored by Dr Smoke:
Problems From Insufficient RAM And Free Hard Disk Space
Freeing Space On Your Mac OS X Startup Disk
Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures, as suggested in the articles linked to below?
Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System Maintenance, authored by Gulliver
Maintaining Mac OS X, authored by Dr Smoke
Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
As posted, if you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
The CRON Commands, can be run manually as well, using Terminal.
I also use MacJanitor when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
    Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
    At the prompt, type:
    sudo periodic daily
    Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
    sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
    Repeat again, with command:
    sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
After you have done some Spring Cleaning, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.

  • Need AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow

hey there.....any help would be greatly appreciated.....
I ave passed along my graphite base station to my brother in law for his new iMac and it seems he needs the "AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow" to get it set up. The new "Airport Utility" doesn't seem to recognize it. Is the utility still available for download? I can't seem to find it anywhere?
Another option....is it possible to copy and paste the utility into my iDisk and have him download it from there?? Not sure it that will work??
Again...many thanks for any help anyone can offer!!!!!

AirPort Admin Utility, version 4.2, which works with Graphite and Snow base stations, can be found within the download of AirPort 4.2 (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42formacosx1033.html).
I tried it on my MacBook running Mac OS X 10.4.10, with a Graphite base station, and it works fine, so far as I can tell.
I did not actually try to install AirPort 4.2 using the installer, because I was afraid of messing with my system when all I wanted was the utility. Here is how to get it:
    - Download the disk image AirPortSW42.dmg from the Web page mentioned above. If the installer launches, quit the installer.
    - Double-click the disk image to mount a volume named "AirPort 4.2 Update."
    - Within the AirPort 4.2 Update window, ctrl-click on "AirPortSW.pkg."
    - Select "Show Package Contents."
    - Open the "Contents" folder.
    - Double-click the "Archive.pax.gz" file, which causes an "Archive.pax" file and an "Archive" folder to be extracted to the desktop.
    - Open the "Archive" folder, the "Applications" folder within it, and the "Utilities" folder within that.
    - The AirPort Admin Utility is there. You can move it to Applications/Utilities and discard everything else that was downloaded.
Thanks to Tesserax (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5136389&#5136389) for recently explaining how to extract an AirPort utility from a download package.
Although I have never seen "AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow," it probably was the same thing as AirPort Admin Utility, just renamed.

  • Airport Utility for Windows fails during install

I downloaded the latest driver for the airport utility for Windows 7.   Ran the exec and during the install had a failure on some file that didn't get installed.
Have all firewalls down.  Utility comes up but doesn't find my airport extreme.

Thanks.  Tried the hard wire approach and the utility didn't find it.   Did the config other and it was found.  So the unit is there but the utility can find it which is what I need in order to connect the shared drive to my windows 7 system.
The airport base station agent is running and configured but I never get a prompt to enter the disk password.
Nice clue about using the IP to connect.
I did this via WIFI. Used my iMac to get the IP address.
The time machine is in bridge mode and connecting through another router to the internet.

  • Airport Express Install help needed as Airport utility for PC seems to sort of work?

    Hope someone can help.
Just bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi
It is connected to my cable modem, and i have my ps3 hard wired to it.
It is on and sending a signal because this computer is using the internet connect on it right now.
Problem is it is still unsecured as the Airport Utility can find it but then when I click continue to set-it up it gives me the following message.
An error occured while trying to access the apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again.
    Error 10057.
Any help would be great. I'm on a PC running Windows 7.

    Thanks for the reply.
All we have is the cable internet modem....it provides our phone and internet signals....tons of lights on it the front that are solid green or flashing green when in use.
I have connected a cable from the modem to the airport express (WAN spot). Plugged in the device (power) and then downloaded Airport Utility for windows from apples website (no disk came in the box).
I have have two wired connections running to the extreme as well, one is to my PS3 downstairs and the other I use when I'm at my desk with my office laptop. These shouldn't be affecting anything and I can get internet on my PS3 wired connecton so I know the router is functioning.
I installed Airport Utility and have rebooted my PC running windows 7, I click and opne the Utility. It finds the base station but when I click on the options to continue or manual I get the error message noted in my first post. I have alos noted that the router goes green light to yellow to flashing yellow. It does nothing but flash amber right now.
    Hope this helps for solutions?
