Alternatives to higher priced stuff

A friend on a job who does video stuff professionally recently told me a bunch of stuff about some alternatives to high priced "solutions" to various workflows...etc...most of which I have immediately forgotten and will have to call him on phone to get info again...
For example, there's some sort of box that you can output hdsdi to that is cheap and will accept LUT tables, and then you can output through the box to less expensive monitors...but I forget what this is exactly....
He also mentioned that instead of getting ( for editing ) really expensive "broadcast" quality flat panels for zillions of dollars you can look into medical monitors.  The color has to be really good for these monitors as color sometimes suggests " disease" symptom....like monitors to look at some image from a camera stuck down your throat or something...
eg.
http://www.barco.com/en//product/1909
Some of these come with built in LUT stuff (common) and color calibration tools.  This color calibration allows for exporting the calibration info so that you can share that with some OTHER editing place with similar monitor...as you load the calibration and presto , your color space is now the same as the other guys color space ....and apparently this can be done with broadcast quality perfection...
???  I am just learning about this stuff but thought it was worth mentioning ...will post more when I call the guy and get more info ( tips )

Dang, it was a green light flashing in my home.
I mean, usually it's red because "how do I jjjjhhhyyy, or why doesn't jjjyyyhh work" basically is all over the 'net'. and I have learned to sleep quite well with the red right
Now it's 5am (here) and I just had to check why the light turned green (green = go, red = stop). Took me a while though...
Hunt,
The mention of Lutefisk triggered all my senses. Dried fish soaked in a mix of water and lye, carefully cooked, served with boiled potatoes, pea-stew, and fried bacon (PS! the liquid fat from frying the bacon has to be pored on to the mix).
No wonder why Edward Grieg made such wonderful music!!!
Dag
PS! My "US-wife" knows how to cook lutefisk, and she likes it very much! Sorry guys, she's turning into being a REAL Norwegian .

  • I just bought the new 2014 Mac Mini 2.6 8Gig for $699 at the Apple Store Online. I want to use it for light editing in iMovie making video's for YouTube, I couldn't afford the higher priced models. Is this going to work for me? I hope so..

Will this do basic video editing for YouTube Video's in iMovie, I hope so.  It's all I could afford.
Just under $800 with tax and Applecare.
    It's stock 2.6 8gigs 1 terabyte hard drive.
I have two monitors DVI that I plan to hook to it.
I know it's weak but will it get me going without too much hardship.
I want to grow into the more high priced computers and Final Cut Pro later on.
I know I will need a bigger computer then.
    Thanks

There are many people using the basic (i5) 2012 MacMini and even older ones to edit complex films in FCP X so you should have no problems.
I have been using FCP 7 and FCP X since they came out on my 2008 iMac Core 2 Duo and am thinking of getting the same model as you rather than pay the astronomic price for a new 27" iMac.
The performance won't be quite as fast but it will be at least 4 times faster at rendering than my old iMac.

  • Do Intel iMacs Require High-Priced UPSs?

I'm in the market for a UPS for my new iMac. I've never used one before, but I've experienced enough power glitches to now "graduate" from my trusty old surge suppressors.
In the past, I've leaned towards APC surge suppressors, so I decided I'd look into APC UPSs. In doing my homework, I came across a rather interesting, and potentially disturbing, thread
(see <http://forums.macworld.com/thread/100654?start=0&tstart=0>). Essentially (if it's correct), when selecting a UPS, one can't simply go by the power ratings in the specs of our
Macs (they end up "understating" (in effect) the size of the UPS you will need). More of a concern, however, is the possibility that the Intel Macs may be a bit "too quick" for any of the
"standard" UPS models (i.e., those based on the lower-cost, offline-technology designs, usually employed by UPS manufacturers for the home-computer/small-office market),
and require one of the "premium" models (i.e., those based on the higher-cost—often,
    significantly higher-cost—line-interactive or online technologies).
Has anyone had any experience that would support or refute this?

You all seem to be calling upon your previous experience with APC products. And while I agree that experience is a great teacher, I’m not so sure how much of the experience you are relating is really relevant (i.e., the use of APC UPSs with recent-vintage Intel Macs). Quite frankly, I’m also not sure whether enough time has elapsed for the alleged issues raised by the APC tech to actually become issues for a lot of Mac users.
So, was the tech “full of it,” and simply trying to “sell” the APC customer—who had contacted APC for tech support regarding his 3-month old UPS—or was the tech honestly trying to help the customer? And if the latter, did he know what he was talking about?
My own experience with APC (limited as it is) combined with what I’ve seen and heard other folks say about the company, and the company’s overall reputation in the marketplace suggest that the tech probably was not trying to get the customer to needlessly buy a more-expensive unit. That leaves us with the question: Did he know what he was talking about?
The tech made 2 specific clams: One relating to power requirements, the other to transfer-time requirements. Everyone here seems to be focusing on power requirements, so let’s try to pass judgment on that first.
_Power Requirements_. The tech made the following statement:
+Apple uses Power Factor Corrected power supplies in their computers. When we+
+size a UPS for a computer with a Power Factor Corrected power supply, we+
+multiply the watts by 1.25. So, for the purposes of choosing a UPS for your+
    +Mac, we would use a wattage of 280W x 1.25 = 350W. This would exceed the+
+watt capacity of the BE550R which can handle a load of 330W. I will place a+
+link here to a document that describes Power Factor Corrected power+
    supplies.
He then provided the following link to a document located in the APC Knowledge Base:
    <http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/namen.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=8883&p_created=1193079387&p_sid=JU8cSF2j& p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd1 9jbnQ9NCZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2 VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9cGZj&p_li=&ptopview=1>.
The document certainly seems to be “authoritative” in its discussion of “power factor corrected” power supplies and the Government’s updated Energy Star requirement (Energy Star 4.0, which took effect in July 2007—see <http://www.energystar.gov/ia/partners/fed_agencies/estar40.pdf>) that such power supplies be used in computers (e.g., desktops, notebooks, workstations, game consoles, and servers). So unless the document is wrong, or unless the tech is wrong about Apple’s compliance with Energy Star 4.0, it appears that the tech’s statement regarding the BE550R’s ability to handle the potential load of the customer’s post-July 2007 24” iMac is correct.
_Transfer-Time Requirements_. The tech claimed that Intel Macs require a transfer time of 4-5 milliseconds but that the APC Back-UPS series (which includes the BE550R) has transfer rates of 8-10 milliseconds. He indicated that this mismatch may very well have been a contributing factor to the sudden spurt of daily shutdowns that the customer had experienced. He put it this way:
+However, there is another consideration. Macs are more sensitive to power+
+fluctuations than comparably sized PC's are. My assumption, based on the+
+information provided, is that the BE550R may have been having very brief+
+transfers to battery caused by harmonic distortion in the input power. This+
+type of distortion is common and is not normally a problem. But, when your+
+UPS transferred to battery, one of two things probably occurred. Either the+
+overload issue caused your Mac to shutdown or the transfer time from on-line+
+to battery caused the Mac to shutdown. The BE550R, being a Back-UPS ES, has+
+a transfer time of around 8 - 10 milliseconds. The BR units have a transfer+
    +time of 4 - 5 milliseconds. We have noticed that Macs need a quicker+
+transfer time than this. For this reason, we now recommend a Smart-UPS for+
+all Macs. Our UPS configurator is being updated to reflect this+
    +recommendation. A Smart-UPS has a transfer time of 2 - 4 milliseconds which+
+works well with Macs. So, to make a long story short, we would recommend an+
    +SUA750 for your Mac.+
He was clearly somewhat more tentative about this transfer-time requirement than he was about the power requirement. And I have yet to see any changes made to the APC website to reflect these new “requirements.” Nevertheless, his presentation seems “reasonable,” and certainly doesn’t come across as a “sales job.” From a user perspective, I just hope it’s a matter of a thoughtful tech pointing to a technically possible issue that may never be of real practical concern.

  • What is the best Mac-compatible Alternative to Quicken and why?

I made the jump to Apple desktops when my PC went on the fritz.  I was using Quicken 2013,  mostly for tracking accounts and forecasting spending, but not the higher end stuff like paying bills, tracking investments, etc.
I wanted to ask the group if anyone has experience with a Mac-compatible alternative to Quicken, especially one that imports Quicken qif files.  I'd also like to know what features you like best about said alternative.

  • Reasonably priced animation software for iMac

I am retired and while not at all well off, I am appreciative of being in the position of not having to earn money any more.
I am currently absorbed in putting together several generations of family photos, movies and keepsakes in as interesting and historically as possible, using iMovie.  Unfortunately, iMovie is ok for fairly mundane taskes, If you can overcome it's restrictive/protective baises and malfunctions.
Anyway, I am looking for a reasonably priced animation software to use as a general purpose interfacer for movies and stills and explanations were necessary.
I have spent hours searching and testing softwares but found most lacking in facilities of one sort or another. Enough to make them not worth taking up room on my computer. I have deliberately avoided high end stuff costing many hundreds of £/$.  Especially Adobe. I find their software very difficult to even get started with.
Xara exteem pro 5 was my first choice but their animation software will not run on a Mach and in any case you cannot convert their Pro 5 animations to anything usefull format so I am stuck and pleeding for help.
Can anyone recommend a animation software for iMac with broard facilities, similar to Xara Extreme Pro 5.   up to, say $200 ?

What kind of animation do you want to do?
For animated humans is Poser Pro quite nice:

  • Where can I find various high level examples of workflows being used

I am about to start a project with TCS 3.5 and have been participating in the Adobe webinars to help learn components and specific techniques but what I am lacking is an understanding of various workflows I can model my project after or take bits from various sources. Why start with Framemaker in this workflow versus RoboHelp or even Word? Questions like this I think come from experience with the process and I am thinking that what I am getting myself into is a chessgame with all these pieces and don't want to paint myself into a corner by traveling down one route. I have seen this graphic:
    And this one:
    And this one:
But they are too generic and do not contain enough information to really understand the descision making process one must go through on various projects.
Can we have a series of webinars made, all with the underlining theme of defining a working process or workflow, by having guests describe how they have or are using this suite in real life on their own projects? One that might include a graphic showing the routes taken through the suite with reasons why?
My project hopes to make a single source internal site that will tie together various 3D portable industrial coordinate metrology systems (hardware and software). It would be used as a dispersal site for help, communications between users and SME, OEM information, QA requirements, established processes, scripting snipet downloads, statistics, and training (including SOJT). Portable industrial metrology has 8 different softwares that are used and right now about 8 different instruments. These include laser trackers and radars, articulated arms, scanners, structered white and blue light to name a few. The softwares include Spatial Analyzer, Veriserf, CompIT, eMscon, AXYZ to a few there as well. I want to be able to participate and add content to an internal Sharpoint site, push content to users for stand-alone workstations, ePub, capture knowledge leaving the company through attrition, develop easy graphic rich job aid sheets, and aid in evaluations of emergent software and hardware. I would also like to leave the option open to use the finished product as a rosetta stone like translator between the software packages; doing this is the equivelent of doing this in these other software pacages for example.

PDF is definately a format I want to include, to collaborate with other divisions and SME for one reason, but also for the ease in including 3D interactive target models with in it and portability. I plan on being able to provide individual PDFs that are very specific in their topics and to also use them to disperse user guides, cheat sheets or job aids... something the user may want to laminate on their own and keep with them for reference, printed out. Discussion in these sheets would be drasticly reduced to only the elements, relying heavely on bullet points or steps, usfull graphs, charts and tables... and of course illustrative images. I am thinking that these should be downloadable buttons to print on each topic section, not in a general apendix or such. They would hopefully be limited to one page, double sided 8x10.
The cheet sheet would have a simplistic flow chart of how or where this specific topic fits in the bigger picture,
    The basic steps,
    Illustrations, equipment, setup
Software settings for various situations in a table or chart,
Typical result graph to judge with,
Applicable QA, FAA regulation settings or concerns,
    Troubleshooting table,
    Topic SME contact info
On the back, a screen shot infographic of software process
The trouble here is that I have read that FM has a problem sometimes in succesfully transfering highly structured or formatted material to RoboHelp. Does this then mean that I would take it from FM straight to PDF?
Our OEM material is very high level stuff... basicly for engineers and not shop floor users... but that is not to say they don't have some good material that could be useful. Our internal content is spread out across many different divisions and continents, with various ways of saying the same thing. This leads QA to interpret the information differently depending where the systems are put to work. We also have FAA requirements that need to be addressed and reminded to the user.
Our company is starting to also see an exodus of the most knowledagble of the users through retirement. Capturing the knowledge and soft skill packages they have developed working here for 20-30 years is something I am really struggling with. I have only come up with two ideas so far:
    Internal User Web based Forum
Interviews (some SMEs do not want to make the effort in transfering knowledge by participating in anything if it requires an effort they don't see of benefit to themseleves), to get video, audio or transcription records

  • What's the best way to record high SPL band rehearsals?

I need a simple way to record higher SPL band rehearsals. I don't need studio quality or multi tracking. Just an audio recording that clear and as un distorted as possible. I know the built in mics on Idevises are not really made for higher volume stuff. My band has changed some of the structures of cover songs we are doing so practicing to the original artists studio recording does more harm then good. I just want to be able to record us rehearsing so I can practice to it at home. And get the changes and structure down before we play out live later this month.
I have quite a few idevices but the more modern choices at my disposal are: iPhone 5, iPhone 4, iPad (3rd gen) ipod (4th gen)
What device, app and hardware will healed best results. I've been told the mic on the earbuds have a better frequency response then the built in mic. So is it better to use that?  And what app is good simple and effective at auto controlling the mic's sensitivity to reduce distortion.
Also I am the drummer and acoustically seated, in About the worst position for quality. So rather then have the idevice behind my kit where I can control it. I would need something I could place across the room and just record an hour or two.
    Thanks.

Seems like you've answered your own question as those are the two ways to do what you are trying to do. Using the key-switch will be less CPU intensive than using multiple instances of the plugin.

Here's one solution that I use for vocal narration.
I have a Shure PG58 with a XLR to 1/4" connection, to which I added a 3.5mm adaptor. The mic was about $60, the adapter was $4.
(Edit: I've just noticed that Griffin makes an XLR to 3.5mm cable, which would eliminate the adaptor.)
You can't connect a mic directly to the line input of your PowerMac, because the level will be too low, but you can either use a mic pre-amp or mixer (if you already have these), otherwise, you can use a Griffin iMic (which is what I use) to convert the audio to USB, which gives you a decent level.

  • Isight with zoom or higher resolution

i've noticed a lot of people inquire about lower priced camera options, i'd like to go in the other direction. is there a higher quality (yes, higher priced) camera for the mac that also has zoom capabilities (not digital zoom)?
    thank you,

    Hello window view,
In answer to your question, a FW camcorder would give you what you ask; higher price tag(unless you already have one), possibly better picture quality and zoom capability.
I've done both and the slight gain in picture, to me, was not worth the hassle of setting up and taking down the camcorder.

  • INCORRECT PRICING:  SD v. HD pricing, for Example, The Office: Season 4

When I click "Add to Cart" for The Office: Season 4 in SD (which is $25), it adds the season in HD at the HD price of $38+! I cannot add individual episodes of the SD version at $1.99 because after purchasing BUY, it does not recognize the item. Seems to me like we are being FORCED to purchase the higher priced item. That's called bait and switch pricing, my friends.
I've emailed customer service. I've called customer service. Apple Customer service, what a joke! It is almost like being in an episode of The Office!

    Hi.
Yes. we have configued around 8 reports from W1 to W8, for all these reports title is mentioned in engilish language, but when this report is used by French Country People, they are not able to see the Title while selection in the V/LD transaction code. Title for French Users ( logged into the system in French Language) is comming as Blank. !!!
Rest of thing like order creation ect. is working fine. So issue is only with V/LD report .

  • Using Advanced Pricing in Purchasing--r12

Can anyone give me the steps required to give a discount/surcharge on the PO price using Advanced Pricing. I understand that we have to set up modifiers and attach qualifier groups to such modifiers, but I'm not getting the desired results. I did not find any information regarding this in the Purchasing UG(r12).
Any document reference will be of immense help.
    Thanx!!

Yes, to use Advanced Pricing in PO there are different setups involved you need to manage them well regularly, if there are frequent changes in discount rules.
Since you want to apply discount on PO Total, hence Blanket Agreements with Price Breaks (simpler alternative to Advanced Pricing) is not applicable in your case.
For the scenario mentioned it is important to know when you want to apply this discount/ surcharge. When the users are entering the PO do they already know the discount? Because apart from technical considerations you need to check for the impact on downstream processes upto the end of the cycle.
You can try to use the approach mentioned in your post using a trigger from Personalization/ a concurrent request. For concurrent request option you can try to use PO_CHANGE_API1_S.update_po but it will consider POs with Approved/ Requires Reapproval status and with restrictions. Like it won't update price if receipt exists against atleast one shipment and accrued and/ or invoice created etc. That's why "when" part of the question is important.
If you plan to use form personalization then be careful, as it may popup unwanted message windows confirming no. of
record(s) committed (as you have commit the changes). Also if you plan to update line prices directly in the form (not thru API/ backend) then there may be possible gaps. Say if there are mutilple lines & users clear some lines after query and then apply the discount then at form level it won't get applied to all lines for that PO.
Another important aspect is adjusting the line prices. As you will try to adjust line price based on total discount applied on PO total, after a price update takes place price changes will be rolled down to the shipment level for standard POs. The adjusted amount should match invoice to avoid un-matched recurring accrual entries.

  • YouTube Videos Now Higher Resolution?

Hi. Watching the YouTube videos on my Apple TV last night, I noticed that some of them seem to be much higher resolution than the same videos viewed in a web browser. Have Apple/Google changed the specs for YouTube videos? I know they're H.264 now, compared to Flash Video, but they definitely look higher-res than 320x240. Does anyone know what the official maximum resolution of YouTube video is now?

some of them seem to be much higher resolution
than the same videos viewed in a web browser.
I think the significance of this remains to be seen. YouTube's commercial value is the "eyeballs" its catalog attracts to the web site. Owner Google is very savvy at turning page views into piles of money. So ... will it eventually upgrade the web page resolution & (optionally?) switch to H.264 there or make the higher res stuff available only to Apple TV (or similar device) users?

  • [2010 MacBook Pro Upgrades] High Prices?

I'm not quite sure that this is what the forums are for, but there's nowhere else I could find to submit my question after 30 mins of searching.
I have been saving up for the 15", 2.66GHz MacBook Pro for almost 1.5 years now, and my target price has always been roughly £1600.
However, the recent upgrades have seen a £200 increase on the prices, but only for the UK. I have noticed that the US prices haven't really changed at all.
Is there a reason behind this high pricing and is there a chance of the prices falling slightly over the next few months?

There was an increase in the 15" models across the board, but have a look also at the change in the UK pound Sterling / US $ exchange rate changes in recent times, captain jones. Unfortunately the expected trend is for further weakening of the £ against $. I suspect this is a substantial part of the change.
We saw similar changes in years gone by when the Aussie $ was not doing so well. The introduction of a GST over here a few years back also had an impact. Now that the Aussie is healthy again against the greenback there has been a significant reduction in price differentials between here and the US (though probably not quite getting us back to parity even when the GST is considered)

  • Re: should I buy a High Def CAMERA or not?

Ok, first of all, thank you SO much all you guys who have been helping me with very good info. So- I see the logic of NOT getting high def now if I am just playing and learning and dealing with YouTube.
I could get just a plain (non-high def) camera for under $300, like a canon ZR-850 which is miniDV but not high def. Or I could get the Canon HV20 or the Sony HDR-HC7 for about $1,100. Why should I spend the extra 7-800$ if I can't even use the high def stiff without a lot of expensive upgrades on my computer software or my screen I would be projecting on. My question is: I have a DELL 40 in plasma screen TV, and I have a G4 mac laptop w/ iMovie 06. CAN I USE HIGH DEF NOW WITH THE EQUIPMENT I HAVE? question #2 If I buy a high def camera now, can I still edit it with iMovie 06 ? is it just that the high def stuff will not be seen as high def? or is it that it won't even work at all and I won't be able to see anything or edit anything unless I have high def software etc?

    Hi Stephen:
From my perspective, the question to as if you should shoot in HD comes back to the reality of HD. Few people actually own BlueRay players. Few (in real terms) people own HD TV's. So if YOU want to connect your HD camcorder to your HD TV, for fun, then sure. BUT if your planning on marketing, selling or in any way distributing your final DVD to a group, then it's harded to justify, since again, few people will be able to view your product.
I am no expert. From what I am hearing as I was asking the same questions, HD can also be tricker to shoot well, the data is a magnitude more than SD. Unless you MUST shoot in HD, what I am being told is to get a really good SD camera (mini DV, nat.) and shoot it well.
    Hope this helps.
