Always on listener on named instance. Do I have to specify the port while connecting a listener created on a named instance?

Hi all. Here again.
Scenario: I have to consolidate several physical servers with one SQL server instance install on each one. I decided to consolidate all in one server installing different named instances. In order to avoid application connection string change I had the idea
of configuring different listener pointing to different alwayson group.
To meet this requests, I configured the cluster, I installed a principal SQLServer Instance and configured the alwayson groups with the required listeners.
All ok so far, alwayson is great.
So, I installed a named instance, I configured the necessary alwayson groups and the related listener but...
NOTE: The db in the principal and in the named instance have the same name.
If I connect the listener pointing the ag belonging the named instance I connect to the principal instance!
the only way I have to connect to the named instance is to specify the port that must be different from the 1433 as usual.
Anyway, why I cannot use the 1433 port if dealing with a different ip?
Listener are the following:
Named instance

I reviewed the architecture installing only named instances and I solved.
Anyway, i'm going to explain better my configuration in order to understand where I went wrong.
I have two servers, SQLCLU01 and SQLCLU02 partecipating to AVSQLCLU cluster
Each server has two SQL instances, the principal SQLPROD and the named instance SQLTEST
Each instance contain the OneToOne database.
I created an AG named AgOneToOneProd laying on the SQLPROD instance with its
OneToOne listener described here down (sys.dm_tcp_listener_states;)

So I tried to create an AG named AgOneToOneTest laying on the SQLTEST named instance with its
OneToOneTest listener but the port 1433 is unavailable even if the listener IP is different. I managed in creating the listener changing the port like this

So, the issue is:
Connecting to OneToOne.mydomain.local i can see the OneToOne database and crud operation are performed against the SQLPROD instance.
But connecting to OneToOneTest.mydomain.local the OneToOne database I'm connected to is still the one belonging to the
SQLPROD instance.
The only way to let my application connected to the SQLTEST instance is to specify the port in the DSN.
Anyway, summary here, issues are bolded
OneToOne.mydomain.local -------> SQLPROD
OneToOneTest.mydomain.local -------> SQLPROD
OneToOneTest.mydomain.local,1455 -------> SQLTEST
The same by IP
10.100.21.100,1455 --------> SQLTEST

May be... Do I missed some best practices in creating listeners against a principal + named instances?

    We have two named instance in "test" server. the names like test\a & test\b... The tcp\ip for test\a is dynamic and for test\b is default port 1433... Now customer requested to install the default instance...we had an issue with installation
    that is the default port number is in use so, the default installation failed and then i changed the settings in registry to use the dynamic port for default instance and then i manually start the sql servers...seems all are good...but when i connecting this
    default instance from out side of the box through SSMS it's pointing to the named instance which one having the default port number(test\b).
    We can change the port number for test\b and assign that port to default instance...but the applications which are connecting to the test\b those are using the default port number...so, we don't want to disturb the connectivity...
    is there any way to fix this issue with out changing the port number for test\b ?
    it is urgent...we have to fix this issue ASAP..

    Hi rup,
    Glad to hear the issue is resolved.
    As your post, if SQL Server is configured to use dynamic port,
    it is difficult for application connectivity because the port number selected changes every time that the Database Engine is started.
    From your description, you have changed the dynamic port number to static port number. To avoid a common pitfall, please also ensure that 
    you have deleted the entry (0 or some random port) for dynamic port in SQL Server Configuration Manager. For more details, please review this

  • Dialog Instance Installation - Error while connecting to DB

    We have installed a WAS 640 SP15 and successfully running a Portal EP6.0 (SP15) on the same. Now, we wish to install a dialog instance on the same for load balancing the Portal on the same Hardware/Server.
    During the DI installation in the phase "Configuring J2EE Engine", the installation fails with the error "Error while connecting to DB".
    I tried to restart the installation by replacing the JDBC and OS_LIB of the new instance with the JDBC and OS_LIB of the already running CI instance but it didnt help either.
    Any pointers in this direction will be appreciated.

    We have the same issue.  We have a NW04 SP19 J2EE standalone WAS and are using the SP19 SAPINST to add a second dialog instance on the same host as the central instance.
    We restarted the Oracle listener  ... to no avail
    The error in the Oracle batchconfig log is given below.

    I have created oracle 10g Release 1 database(orcl) in Windows Xp Professional edition through DBCA . I also created one more database(sample) manually .
    The ORCL server process listens to port no 1521 and
    SAMPLE server process listens to port no 1522
    Once I start the OracleServiceORCL (Service for orcl) from services.msc and check the listener status it displays

    But when I start OracleServiceSAMPLE (Service for sample) from services.exe and check the listener status there is no change . Only when i start the instance the dynamic registration takes place with port no 1521 .
    There is no entry for listener parameter in init.ora file . My question is how is the service ORCL able to get itself registered with the listener even before the instance is up ?
    And how can i know which port no is linked with which server process?
    Also if we provide a different port number(other than 1521 say 1522) in tnsnames.ora for a service and consider the listener is listening to both 1521 and 1522 . Now consider that port number 1521 is free . In this case to which port number will the service be listening to ?

    The status tells you the instance is up. Starting the service often means the instance gets started also, but whatever "often" means, "READY" means "The instance is up, running and taking callers".
    Your statement that "ORCL [is] able to get itself registered with the listener even before the instance is up" is therefore factually incorrect: you started the service, that started the instance. The instance is up and running. Instances that aren't running don't exist. Things which don't exist don't register themselves. Things which HAVE registered themselves therefore do exist.. and if they say they are "ready", it means they are completely, 100% up and running and behaving quite normally.
    I have not set LOCAL_LISTENER initialization parameter.How is this happening ?
    You only need to set LOCAL_LISTENER if (a) you're not using TCP/IP, (b) you're not using port 1521. Otherwise, PMON is hard-coded to register itself with listeners running on port 1521 and using TCP/IP and you don't need to set LOCAL_LISTENER to achieve that.
    Server Processes do not listen. Listeners do (there's a clue in their name). Listeners receive a call to connect to an instance, they spawn a server process to handle your call, and then they connect you to that server process (or send a message back to you telling you how to contact the server process). Each server process of course receives communications from its dedicated client on a specific port (usually in the 50000+ range), and that port is chosen randomly by the listener when it's spawning it. It's a bit blurry and vague to call that server process port a port on which server processes "listen", however.
    If you're talking dedicated server, each client causes one new server process to be spawned, and there is a one-to-one correspondence between server processes and the port that server process happens to accept client communications on.
    If you're going to ask a listener to do listening duty on multiple ports, I'd first question your need to do that and I'd then point out that unless your client tnsnames.ora knows to talk on the second or subsequent port numbers, the listener is never actually going to make use of that second port.
    In either case, the port the listener listens on has nothing whatsoever to do with the port your client-to-server-process communication ends up taking place   • I have problem with the BPEL server caching the jar file of Instance

    Is there any way to undeploy and redeploy a process where you have changes to the underlying DA, without the BEPL server being restarted. This always works in my Local BPEL server in my Laptop. But when deploying in the hosted BPEL enviroment it becomes a big problem in getting it restarted when ever I MAKE changes.
    Is there any other way to disable the Cache of the instance and make it use the newer version uploaded. One more thing if the connection to a database is severed, then the DA will not work until the server is restarted. All the instances using the said connection is failing with either "Invalid Datatype" or "Socket Read exception". Can someone help!!

    i installed a fresh oracle linux and installes 11.2.0 database server. the server works fine but i have a proplem to connect to the database from a windows 2008 r2
    client. For the client connection i installed the oracle instantclient on the windows system. Now i want to configure the system dsn to connect to the oracle

    Hi,
    Check the listener log and see if the connection information is logged (in this case with error)
    If logged, then we are reaching the correct listener.
    Then check tnsping VCDB works fine along with sqlplus connection through listener using VCDB as connect string.
    If above both works, then issue can be isolated to ODBC configuration or setup issue.
    In case even if the tnsping / sqlplus is failing to connect with VCDB, then worth taking a client sqlent trace at level 16 and listener trace at level 16 to analyse the issue further.

    I am trying to install Oracle Secure Enterprise Search 11.1.2.2 on Windows 7 64-Bit Enterprise Edition.
    The machine has Oracle Client installed on it. Loopback adapter was configured.

    i have done that. i copied the tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora, listener.ora files from the c:>oracle-home\network\admin folder into oracle_devhome\network\admin folder. i have also set the environment variable oracle_sid=skoolman. skoolman is my sid as you can see on the tnsnames.ora. but the error massage still comes up as soon as i run forms from the forms builder environment.
    but as i said i am able to connect to the database with my user name and pass word from within the forms builder environment to access my tables and create data blocks etc but as soon as i run the form through internet explorer the forms servlet boots up and the error massage ora-12560 tns protocol adapter error pops up.

    I was not able come to conclusion on the port that SQL server is listening on because when I try netstat I see both the Ports listening.

    We would like to add a dialog instance to our production Portal server.  We installed Portal as stand-alone on the central instance.  We have another server we would like to setup to serve as a Portal dialog instance.
    So far I have installed Windows 2003 Server Standard.  Installed MSSQL server client tools (database is mssql server).  Installed jdk 1.4.62.  Set java home and path environmental variables.  I'm now installing the Java dialog instance (I can't find any documentation on this).  From Netweaver installation CD> SAP NetWeaver '04 Support Release 1> Java System> MS SQL Server> Dialog Instance Installation>
    SAP System ID: (sid) ES2
    Central Host: SAPEPS02
    Path to JAVA DVD supplied> JDK Directory confirmed> Domain paramaters confirmed> domain<sid> account passwords supplied> domain<service><sid> account password supplied> Instance number confirmed>
    Installation started> It gets to step 8 and fails stating "Error while connecting to DB".  I looked through all the log files and couldn't come up with anything (i'm very thorough).
    I tried adding the users to the database as dbowners (no luck).  I installed SQL server 2000 with SP4.  No where during this installation did I get prompted for database parameters?
    Is there something basic i'm missing?  Does this scenario not work?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Pointing me in the right direction of the correct documentation would also be appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

    It was from InDesign that I was creating the shared pdfs. I was one of two Mac drivers in a corporate sea of Win users and had to make the change I mentioned in order for the Win users to see my pdfs for review. The difference from what you appear to be doing was that were all on an MS Exchange Server so the files were shared over the company's Exchange Server e-mail system. However, some of these files occasionally went to outside users via regular e-mail and those people had no issues either.
    So what I did was tested and worked for years.
    You might look at the Adobe forums or Knowledge Base to see if that is a reported issue with newer version of CS. I was on CS2 when I was doing this, and the other Mac driver was on CS3 but had no problems either.
    Some Win users I've talked to find a problem opening some pdfs (not mine) in general and found they had to open Reader first and them open the file from Reader's File menu. That most often happened if the client was using an outdated version of Reader.

    That's because all apps are forever tied to the Apple ID used to obtain them, & can only be updated using that ID.
    To use your new ID with these apps, you'll have to delete them, then repurchase. Or, contact iTunes support, explain the situation, & ask that they add these apps to the download queue of your new ID.

  • The programs open tab ( list of programs open on comp) is always popping up on middle of screen whenever I go near the mouse.  HELP!!!  Have turned it off recently and moved it, a mac mini, now on new plug in and set up it now does it.

    The programs open tab ( list of programs open on comp) is always popping up on middle of screen whenever I go near the mouse.  HELP!!!  Have turned it off recently and moved it, a mac mini, now on new plug in and set up it now does it.
    Yes I have turned it off and restarted it, ubnplugged mouse and plugged it back  in.
    Have not updated it in a little bit
    running mavericks, which I dislike.10.9.1
    This is a new problem,
    Why where and what do I need to do to fix it? Please.

    I have also noticed the drop down menu arrow on Numbers Tabs has dissappeared since move.
    you know the invisible arrow that appears in the additional tabs pages in "Numbers program"
    Especially an inconvenient for previous Numbers users as you all know.
    any word on New Numbers Tutes at all??
    You'd think with a Billion dollars they could make a 10 min clip saying here are changes guys, go enjoy new layout.....  Just saying...  not.

    If the reset doesn't work:
    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTune (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTune and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTune has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTune.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note: Data will be lost
