Always On New Availability Group - Full backup is required

Just trying to create a New Availability Group for AlwaysOn , I see the database is listed, in the status it says: "Full backup is Required. The database is AdventureWorks2012, i have taken a full backup, but still see the message. I did an attach
using .mdf/ldf files for this db, it is full mode.
Created a test db and did a full backup, this shows up ok as "meets prerequisites". Just curious what wrong with the AdventureWorks2012 db from MS.
Ranga

Hi Ranga,
After setting a database to full recovery mode, a full backup is required to initiate the full-recovery log chain.
I think AdventureWorks2012 is a normal database the same as the test database you created. You could try it again.

  • New purchase groups

    Hi All,
Can any one explain me the process of new purchase groups.
Here my requirement is to create a new purchase groups and these new groups are to be replicated in both R/3 and EBP.
I know the creation process in R/3, is it enough to do or any thing that I have to do in ebp also.
As of my knowledge there is no validity period and cost centre require ment for purchasing group creation in R/3. Please correct me if any thing wrong in this.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Krish

    Hi Krish,
Create the cost centres in R/3 (ECC) for your controlling area using KS01 txn code. and create P.Groups in ECC as informed to you in my prevous reply.
Same way in SRM, in your existing Org. structure create the new P.groups as required under the concerned P.Org.
In the attributes of the P.Groups for the attribute Cost Centre assign the concerned cost centre for that P.Group.
This is how you can assign cost centers to P.Groups in SRM but you don't have that option while creating either cost centres or P.groups in ECC.
This will fulfill your requirement.Hope this will resolve your issue.Clarifications are welcome.

  • Sql always on full sync when creating availability group

    hi,
i am creating AOAG in SQL 2012 and i am a little confused as to how the sync is created.  when you setup the avail group the options you have are full, join and something else.  We are doing the full.
i have a database that's 700gb in size so i did a backup to meet the pre reqs of creating the aoag.  i then started the process and it shows a list of tasks its performing.  once of the tasks is backing up the db before it syncs.
if i look at the backup it shows a size of 217GB.  why do i have a difference in the size.  does it do something different while creating the AOAG?
    Thanks
    phill

    Hi phillbl,
According to your description, the backup operation copies the data in the database to the backup file. The backup contains only the actual data in the database and not any unused space. Therefore, the backup is usually smaller than the database itself.
Usually, in SQL Server AlwaysOn Availabity Group Wizards, you can use
Select Initial Data Synchronization page to specify a network share in order to create and access backups, then synchronize full initial data with secondary database.
If you are unable to use the wizard to perform full initial data synchronization ,you need to manually prepare a Secondary database for an Availability Group , as other post, you should manually restore a recent database backup of the primary
database using RESTORE WITH NORECOVERY, and then restore each subsequent log backup using RESTORE WITH NORECOVERY.

  • Availability groups and full-text indexes.

    Hello,
I have created an availability group that contains a database. The database is working fine.
I get a request to create a full-text catalog and to add full-text indexes.
Is it possible to create full-text indexes on databases that have a primary replica and a number of secondary replicas?
    Best regards,
    Erik

    Hi hcv,
Microsoft will support full-text search in a clustered environment in SQL Server, so you can create full-text indexes on databases which are in Always on environment. In
the AlwaysOn Availability Groups, two types of availability replicas exist: a single
primary and some secondary replicas. To add a database to an availability group, the corresponding secondary database will exist until backups of the new primary database are restored to the server instance that hosts the secondary replica (using
RESTORE WITH NORECOVERY). You can refer to
back up and restore Full-Text catalogs and indexes.
There is an article about Full-Text Indexing in SQL Server, you can review them.

  • Always On Availability Groups

    Hello everyone!
I am currently planning to implement SQL Always On Availability Groups.
Mainly i have one sql server so apparently i need to setup a new sql server.
In the wizard there is a page where I need to select Initial data synchronization full or join.
What’s the difference?? Is choosing the full option requires me to provide a Third  server to temporarily store my database so my 2 main SQL server can sync for the first time? And if yes can I remove this shared location (Third server) after the database
    are synced??
    Thank You.

Join option only if the new
secondary databases already exist on each server instance that hosts a secondary replica for the availability group. That is you have manually restore a recent database backup of the primary database using RESTORE WITH NORECOVERY, and then restore each
subsequent log backup using RESTORE WITH NORECOVERY.
    Full option
creates a full and log backup of the primary database, create the corresponding secondary databases by restoring these backups on every server instance that is hosting a secondary replica, and join each secondary database to availability group.
When you use full you have to
specify a network share folder in order for the wizard to create backups and secondary replica will access backups to perform restores from this stage. Yes you can remove the share once the all databases are in sync.

  • HT1175 Time Machine wants to start with a new, full backup instead of using the existing one

Hi, my Time Machine wants to start a new, full backup, instead of continuing with the existing one on the time Capsule.
Looking a the Troubleshooting guide, I've found the following piece of info, which is, as 99% of the times with the troubleshooting guides, totally useless to resolve my problem...
Message: Time Machine starts a new, full backup instead of a smaller incremental backup
There are three reasons why this may occur:
    You performed a full restore.
Your Computer Name (in Sharing preferences) was changed--when this happens, Time Machine will perform a full backup on its next scheduled backup time.
If you have had a hardware repair recently, contact the Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store that performed your repair. In the meantime, you can still browse and recover previous backups by right-clicking or Control-clicking the Time Machine Dock icon, and choosing "Browse Other Time Machine disks" from the contextual menu.
It should be noted (hence the uselessness of the guide) that:
-I haven't performed ANY full restore
    - I havent changed my computer name
    - My computer has not had ANY repair, much less a hardware repair. Neither recently, nor in the 9 months I've owned it.
Which puts me back to square one, with the marginal improvement that now I have a way of browsing my old backups.
In the event I decide to start all over again, will there be a way for me to "sew" the two backup files?
Or will I always have to go the silly way around?
    Anybody has any idea?
Thank you for your time (machine/capsule, your choice;-)

    Hi John,
no, that doesn't have anything to do with my problem.
Just look at the image below.
Time Machine thinks that the disk I've always used to do my backups has none of them.
If I open the disk with Finder, obviously they are where they should be.
It is even possible to navigate them as per the instruction reported above, but even following Pondini's advice #s B5 and B6 (which are more applicable to my problem) didn't solve the problem.
Actually, not being a coder, I'm always scared of doing more damage than good when I have a Terminal window open.
My question is: how is it possible that Apple hasn't thought of some kind of user command to tell the idiotic Time Machine software that a hard disk backup is a hard disk backup, no matter what?
Estremely frustrating and annoying: I'm wasting HOURS in trying to find a solution to a problem that should not have arisen in the first place...
    Have a nice weekend

  • How do I remove a node from Always on Availability Group in SQL 2012

Hello I was wondering if anyone could tell me to remove a node from an AOG group in SQL 2012.  We currently have a two node Always on availability group and I need to replace one of the servers.  My plan is to bring the
new server on to the group then remove the old server and I am having issues finding documentation on this.  Could someone explain how to do this or if it is even possible.
    Thanks

After the new server is added to the cluster and the AG, remove the old one by first
    ALTER AVAILABILITY GROUP [YourAG]
    REMOVE REPLICA ON N'OldServer';
Remove a Secondary Replica from an Availability Group
Then evict the old server from the cluster with the cluster administrator or
    Remove-ClusterNode OldServer
Remember to verify the quorum configuration after adding the new server and removing the old server.

  • TM always do full backups, I tried everything :(

I recently did a full backup of my internal HD on my time capsule using TM.
    200Go... I survived
Little problem : now TM does not do any incremental backup and each time wants to archive my entire HD again, 200Go.
I really don't understand, it used to work fine
I tried many things until I reinstalled my TC and restarted again from scratch my TM backup...but nothing changed.
my config is pretty simple : iMac running 10.6.3 + Time Capsule (1To, 1st Gen)
Been playing with mac for 20 years and usually solve things by myself but this time, I'm lost.
    any idea ?
    thanks a bunch
PS: never been asked to install the recent update that requires to make full backup

    Hi,
You've posted in the Leopard Time Machine forum, and one post says you're running Leopard, the other Snow Leopard, so color me confused. (If you click +My Settings+ at the right of this page and fill it in, that will be automatically added to all your posts.)
We've seen this a few of times on Snow Leopard. If you're really on Leopard, these may not apply.
A long shot, but easy to do if you haven't already, is to +*Repair Permissions+* on your boot drive.
In one case, it turned out to be a problem with an extended attribute. If you're comfy with Terminal, take a look at this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2161241&tstart=0&messageID=102 40585#10240585
Another was something corrupted in OSX; a reinstall of OSX did it: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2198474&tstart=0&messageID=104 23492#10423492
After reinstalling OSX, download and install the "combo" update to get back to 10.6.3. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1017 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
PS: never been asked to install the recent update that requires to make full backup
That doesn't get offered to everybody; some folks with TC's don't get it, some who don't have them do. We've still not figured out just what it's looking for, finding, or fixing. And it doesn't always make a full backup; it only reports that in a few cases.

  • Which Edition of Windows is required for using SQL 2012 Always On Availability Groups

I want to use the new feature of having 2 secondary mirror replicas. the first secondary replica will be sync the second one will be async.
Currently I have SQL Enterprise license and Windows 2008 R2 Standard license.
Will I be required to upgrade to Windows Enterprise license to use Always On? (since this feature depends on Windows clustering?)
Can you please confirm if SQL Always On feature can be used on Windows 2008 R2 standard or not?
    MSDNStudent Knows not much!

Always On is available with Standard Edition but it supports only 2 nodes.
AlwaysOn is a bigger umbrella which covers two features. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (AG) and AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instance (FCI).
FCI for 2 node is supported. You can't use AG feature in SQL Server Standard Edition

  • 2nd backup always full backup

    Hi:
I'm setting up time machine to work on a USB drive attached to an airport extreme.
Just reformatted the drive to GUID and took the apostrophes and periods out of my network name.
Things work but there is one problem: the second backup is always a full backup. Ie it backs up 90 gigs, then the second backup is again a 90gig backup.
    After that it works fine.
For my first backup I'm plugging the drive in directly through USB, then I go and plug it in through the airport extreme, then when it starts to do a full 90 gig backup for the second backup I cancel, unplug the drive, plug it back in through USB and let it finish the second backup.
After that things work normally but I'm concerned because there's an extra 90 gig on my disk=my disk will get full quickly. I'm using a 500gig disk to backup two macbooks with about 90gig a piece on them currently.
From console the only thing that looks out of place is:
25/03/08 2:27:45 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[2925] Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Gojira
Should I be concerned? Am I doing something wrong here?

Short answer, yes. Both computers backed up for the second time as if it were an initial backup.
However that was before I reformatted the hard drive -- it wasn't GUID.
Sorry, that's confusing. Here's what happened:
    1. Plugged in macbook. Did full backup.
    2. Second backup on macbook: did full backup again.
    3. From then on with macbook: normal backups.
    4. Plugged in macbook pro, did full backup.
    5. Second backup on macbook pro did full backup.
    6. From then on macbook pro backedup normally.
    7. Realized I needed to reformat the drive to GUID. Refmoratted.
    8. Did first backup with macbook pro. Did full backup.
    9. Did second backup with macbook pro... doing full backup. I'm mid-backup right now.
For my initial backup on the macbook pro, console reported 465.29GB available. For the second backup 379.48GB available. Currently in the finder -- I am mid-second backup -- it reads 301GB available. So it seems like it's copying everything on my computer twice...

  • Some Quick clarification about 2012 and always on Availability groups

Hi guys, just need some clarification about always on.
I've got plenty of experience with normal SQL Clusters, but just need some clarification around always on availability groups.
I presume with AG, you setup a listener and this becomes your point of connection, IE this is what you use in the you connection string for you applications, so can I use this when I am setting up a new application, and will this automatically make the Database
that's created by the APP, Highly available. ? or do you still have to add it to the AG afterwards. ?
I have also read that you can still point to the installed SQL instance, and you don't need to use the AG group listener, but how does this make your DB HA ? how does the failover work.
I also presume you don't need to use any roles under the MSC anymore.
    Kind regards
    Mark.G

    Hi Mark
I presume with AG, you setup a listener and this becomes your point of connection
That's right, the listener is a virtual network name and you can use this to connect to the primary or secondary replica. Your connections will go in against the primary unless you're using
    read-only routing.
so can I use this when I am setting up a new application, and will this automatically make the Database that's created by the APP, Highly available
The first thing you'll have to do is set up the availability group (AG). You can then associate a listener to the AG. I know you're familiar with failover clustering but the mechanics of this are much closer to database mirroring. For every database that's
part of the AG you'll have at least one secondary replica, it's possible to automatically failover to this if you're in synchronous mode.
I have also read that you can still point to the installed SQL instance, and you don't need to use the AG group listener, but how does this make your DB HA ? how does the failover work.
Yes you can do, but from an application perspective you should only do this for databases that are not part of an AG. If you connect to the instance directly and you have a failover your app will no be able to connect to the database (on the assumption your
secondary isn't read-only). App connections should always be via the Virtual Network Name.
I also presume you don't need to use any roles under the MSC anymore.
Not sure I understand this? Do you mean will roles be available in cluster manager? Each AG group will have a role but failover is now controlled through the SQL Server rather than the cluster manager.

  • I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.  I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?

I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.
I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • How to create a new full backup alongside existing one?

I have recently reinstalled my MBP from scratch and installed some apps from scratch as well. I still have my old TM backup in a sparsebundle on my NAS (a ReadyNAS NV+).
I now would like to create a complete new full backup alongside my existing one. Or put differently, a new folder/backup inside the Backups.backupdb inside the mounted sparsebundle. Currently I see a folder called "XYZs MacBook Pro". I'd like that to be renamed to something like "XYZs Old MacBook Pro" and create a new full backup under "XYZs MacBook Pro".
I understand you end up having multiple folders inside Backups.backupdb if you have many Macs (with different MAC addresses). I only have one Mac, but want TM to treat my old previous backup (of the same MPB, hence with the same MAC address) as if it was from another Mac (with a different name).
With such a setup, I can still access backups from my previous installation of the same hardware by selecting another volume from TM (by holding Alt when clikcing at the TM icon) or with tools such as Back-In-Time.
Is there any way to achieve this? My sparsebundle is large enough to hold another full backup alongside the old one.
    Thanks

But wait, you said if I erased the disk I get a new UUID. I did not erase it but I moved all files into a /Previous folder (after booting from the install DVD), then installed the system new, and then moved user data (and some Library and some application stuff) back from /Previous. So, I guess, I have no new UUID for my internal disk.
Ah, yes, that is different ("reinstalled from scratch" usually means erased). If the disk was never erased, it will still have the same UUID. But since you've moved or replaced virtually everything, it will all get backed up anyway.
I'm not sure why you did all that; the old +Erase and Install+ and +Archive and Install+ options no longer exist for Snow Leopard: there's just Install, which replaces OSX without touching anything else.
I wanted to have a *really clean* install as my old systems seemed to be messed up with some bad settings.
So, back to my original question: how can I make the new "XYZs MacBook Pro" appear alongside the old "XYZs MacBook Pro" and switch volumes when I start TM using the Option key?
Why would you want to do that? You can view and restore from any backup.
I figured that way I can keep all old backups from the old installation and not have TM retire old stuff. And start a new one from scratch for the new installation where things will get retired. Basically keep the two backups apart from each other and not see any of the old stuff unless explicitly mounted using the option key.
If I follow your approach, what happens to old files of the old disk/UUID? Will they get retired eventually? Would my original idea work as envisioned or would it retire old things nevertheless? If the latter is the case, it is of no use and your suggested approach is the better one.
Is there maybe a ay to force TM to start a new full backup?
Back up to a different place: a different HD or partition, or erase the current one.
Guess that's my only option then. I created a full bootable backup to en external USB disk using Carbon Copy Cloner. Erasing the internal disk and copying back using CCC will create a new UUID then I guess ...
I will try that in the next couple of days and report back here. Thanks a lot for all your help and explanations so far, much appreciated!
