Am I about to ruin my project?

I'm about to color correct my DVCPRO HD project, but only have access to a standard NTSC broadcast monitor. I've got it successfully connected through my DVX100 using firewire to the camera and S-video from the camera to the monitor.
My question is, is it drastically problematic that my monitor is not HD quality? I'm only using it for color correction, not playback. Will I be okay using it for color reference? Or would I be better off using my Apple 23" HD monitor to do the correction?

I got a reasonable encode from Compressor 2 by using Constant Bit Rate with the average set to 5.5. I know others here have used VBR with average set to 4.5 and max set to 7.5, but I believe most of them are dealing with short projects. Your mileage will definately vary depending on your footage. Also if you upgraded from Compressor 1 instead of a clean install, you may have some incompatible settings. Go over to the Compressor forum if you need more.
I did a lot of reading yesterday while I was waiting for low quality encodes to finish and the software options on the mac seem to be:
BitVice from Innobits. Good reviews. This is the direction I was leaning in if things didn't get better. You can download a demo.
Cleaner from discreet. Does lot of other things too.
Sorenson Squeeze. Also does a bunch of other stuff.
Digigami's MegaPeg-X
Heuris' MPEG Power Professional
Main Concept Encoder
Popwire's CompressionMaster.
ProCoder is PC only but seems to draw very high marks. Made me think about getting a PC just to do encodes in the corner. My business is not there yet.
I think next time around I'm going to try BitVice, or the soon to be released BitVice Pro.
None of this is based on any testing I have done, just a bunch of reading here, on Creative Cow and on 2-Pop.

Hopefully, the above info will clarify everything about the library/event/project hierarchy. The important thing to keep in mind is you can't work without a library; and that library has to hold at least one event. Your event is a folder that organizes your media according to a wide variety of criteria that you can specify. Your project contains the timeline where you assemble your selects, apply your effects to tell your story and it is stored within the event folder.
You will be happy to hear that those who come to FCP X without much traditional NLE experience (sorry, David) usually pick it up very fast. A guy that I work with didn't even have any iMovie experience and after less than 2 hours of DIY learning, cut a very credible show that aired on a local station.

I'm using ver. 3.4.5. After having a problem importing some photo's I now have all my library showing up in the one project. I'm worried about just deleting this project in total. Any help would be appreciated

After importing a small group of photo's I noticed that aperture didn't create a project for them as usual. The only place I could see them was in last imported. While last importwas open I selected the photo's and told aperture to creat a new project using the selected one's. I named the project with the date using all cap's so I would know which one it was. What I have now is my whole library showing up in this one project. If I import more pictures It does two things. A new project is created as it normally does. These new thumbnails also show up in the problem project. I tested to see what would happen if I deleted one old picture while the problem project was open. It went to the trash. It was also removed from its original project. If I ignore this what seems to happen when importing at this time is that a new project is created that you can open, it acts normal. The file only contains the correct amount pictures. If I then go to the problem project the thrumbnails show here also.
About 6 mos ago I switch to Aperture from iphoto. I never combined the two libraries. I have around twelve thousand photo's. December 1st I backed up my imac with Time Machine. I don't want to back up again until I get this problem in check.

I'm using Mac OSX 10.7.5
No the one with the caps seems to be working normally.This project with the caps now has four files. Originally I created it with about fifteen. I deleted eleven of them and edited the remaining four. The four files each have one version and its original. It wasn't until after I completed this work that I noticed the privious project when opened and scrolled had the entire library in it.
The test I did went like this. With the problem opened I deleted one file that I new existed prior to this problem. I than opened that project that I new it was from to see if it got deleted and found it gone and moved to trash. I think that tells me that if I delete all the files in the problem project I'll be in trouble. I also have inported to projects each with one file that I edited. They are working fine. I took a look in the problem project and this last
two imports show the thumdnails in it.
Currently on my Hard Drive I have 275 GB free space. My photo's take up 138 GB. As I said on Dec. 1st I backed up the system using time machine. So all of Dec. and part of Jan. inports won't be on it. I could work around the problem project and move those file to a safe place. I think it best not to back up the system with Time Machine until I'm confident the Aperture is runing properly. I'm happy that I control these system backups manually.
I'll need to find out how to copy the Aperture library to another place. I'm sure I can poke around and fined out the process.

How to set up Stories for many chapters and about compressor 95 min project

Hi
I am about to build a DVDSP project that is 95 mins long. I wanted to ask the best way to set this up (my project is SD PAL out of FCP 6.0.4 and I have DVDSP 4.2.1).
The project has 5 main chapters and numerous sub chapters and sub/sub chapters. I need to have a PLAY ALL button and a CHAPTERS button. From the chapters button, after each chapter or sub chapter is played I need it to go back to one of the menus.
What is the best way to set this up? I'm starting to read about Stories...but wanted to check if this is the best way to go.
ALSO - do you have any tips for bit rate settings, 1 or 2 pass VBR etc when I have my QT 'make movie self contained' in Compressor. I'm a bit nervous about such a big file. Is a one pass VBR ok and what is the best bit rate range to set for this?

Two pass VBR is probably the best, take a look at the links above, 95 Minutes should fit on a DVD-5
Stories maybe easier than scripting, but kind of hard to tell. Scripting is another option. Play All story would have all the markers in it, to play just a section put the marker just for the section, and set end jumps for each story to where you want it to go.

Default preloader is ruining my project and driving me crazy... not asking for much here.

I have tried for weeks now to find a simple way to add my logo and maybe text that says "now loading - please wait, etc", however, I have yet to find a SIMPLE way to do this. Every tutorial I have found shows how to add actionscript, or a moving progress bar with percentages, etc. These tutorials are not for designers, nor are they simple for beginers. If it truly is that difficult to add a simple logo (image) and maybe text to the default flex preloading screen (doesnt have to have the progess bar), I do not see the benefit to Catalyst for designers who care about the "first appearance" of their project.
PLEASE, if anyone can walk me through the simple way of adding an image, video, text, or whatever to the loading screen that would be great. As for now I have many hours of work sitting standby because the loading page and false hope in catalyst. SURELY there must a solution.
I REALLY appreciate any help!

Unfortunately preoloaders are tough issue. I am sure if you work through carefully one of those tutorials you would be able to do. But, as an alternate solution, you could contact a local Flash or Flex user group and see if a member there could help you out. Or even an online group. Just be aware, once it is taken into Flash Builder (which it will be), it can not be reopened in Flash Catalyst.

Super noob questions about cs6 and air project

Hi, I'm trying to pass a complicated game I developed few months ago with CS5.0 for desktop and I wanted to try, at least, how it worked in a android/ios simulator... but it's becoming something harder than I though.
1) How I know if I'm developing in flash or flex? I only see "flash" or "air"; should I try with flash builder instead? is it better for games development?
2) Why do we have the option to publish as swc if it's a mobile app? If it's IOS is supposed to created a IOS compilated file... so... swc??
3) I'm having really bad times with all the swf and swc I had before. Seems like it doesn't read the sfw in runtime, publish them as swc and add them in the as3 project's configuration doesn't work either. Any sort of known issue?
4) Can I ask you about tutorials or any sort of information? not about creating animations and launch them in the simulator, that's fine. About managing project and this sort of "more advanced" stuff. I don't find any sort of information anywhere!

Sorry, I misinterpreted that part of the qustion. Yes, Colin is of course correct. Apple won't allow you to run any non-compiled code (C compiled, not AS-compiled) on IOS. So you can neither bundle a swf with the ipa nor call to a server to load a swf, if that swf contains any code whatsoever (even something as simple as a stop() action or a linkage identifier).
What you can do is embed a swf into your project, or link to your swc and use its assets in that way. This results in a single swf that gets compiled into your ipa, thus satisfying Apple's requirement.
Oh, and a little more on #1: You asked if you should use Flash Builder, and if it's better for games development. The answer is: "it depends". Most every "serious" dev I know develops in some sort of dedicated coding environment: FB, FDT (this is what I use principally), IntelliJ, FlashDevelop, emacs, etc. That said, I worked quite successfully in Flash for many years and its coding tools are adequate (arguably). If you start building large systems, though, you will probably rapidly get tired of the limited toolset and want to graduate to something with a bit more firepower.

BTW...I'm talking about my experience, not passing judgement. Anyone who considers themselves a serious dev and yet codes in the Flash IDE, I respect your preference. If you consider yourself a serious dev and haven't *tried* working in another environment, I still respect you; but I also suggest you look at the advantages of other work environments.

Discussion About The Use Of Project Server 2013 Timesheet Custom Billing Categories (Post SP1 and April 2014 CU Install)

In support of a consulting company using timesheet custom billing categories to designate project time as billable onsite, billable offsite, and non-billable, I've encountered a series of issues which appear to be associated with the custom billing category
timesheet lines. These issues cause timesheet users to get frustrated, and contribute to misalignment between project actuals and timesheet actuals. We're in Single Entry Mode, no pre-population, SP1 and April 2014 CU Installed.
I'll enumerate the issues here and pose the question to the community as to whether others are experiencing any/all of these things, and if so, ask if any workarounds have been discovered. We're working with Microsoft to validate these independently,
but I am posing the questions to the community to gather additional information, and hopefully save some folks time in troubleshooting similar issues.
1.When time is entered on an assignment into timesheet lines of multiple billing categories, only time entered since the last save is getting saved and ultimately sent, on timesheet submit, to the approval center. Although the previously entered and
saved time appears in the application interface when the timesheet is re-opened, only data since last save is actually saving to the server or processing through the approval center. We believe this is the primary cause for timesheet and project actuals
being out of alignment.
2."_ Error Loading". When assignments are added, deleted, or changed after a timesheet has been created, standard timesheet lines are added, deleted or changed (i.e. synchronize) with the assignments. However, for custom billing category
timesheet lines, they do not change when the assignments change, and they aren’t removed if the assignment is removed. We believe this causes secondary errors, like the "_Error Loading" (and others as will be described below).
3.When a timesheet with time in a non-standard billing category is deleted and recreated, time is arbitrarily moved to standard timesheet lines for the same assignment. If the task assignment is subsequently removed, the timesheet line causes the timesheet
to break.
4."Error Communicating with Server". When trying to submit a timesheet, a pop-up box appears indicating that there is an error communicating with the server. This error appears because a timesheet line is no longer associated with a project.
In order to submit the timesheet the orphaned timesheet line must be identified and manually removed. One technique we found which helps to identify an orphaned timesheet line is to select a task and submit task progress. Repeat for all timesheet lines until
you get an error. The timesheet line(s) with the error can be manually removed from the timesheet, fixing the error.
5. Unable to Open Specific Timesheets without Error. There are certain scenarios when the "Remove Task" feature is used or an assignment is otherwise removed after creation of a timesheet with custom billing category lines, which causes orphaned
timesheet lines. These orphaned lines can cause issues when trying to open a timesheet. The issue can appear when timesheets are in progress in multiple periods. In the problematic scenario, time is entered and submitted in one period and subsequently
the task is 'removed' from another period before the PM processes the first approval request. Process governance can certainly help here, but improvement in the way synchronization occurs between project assignments and custom billing category timesheet lines
would be great. The error can often be resolved by re-adding the assignment for the problematic timesheet user to the project (which creates a new assignment), and then allows you to open the timesheet. Then time can be moved from the old timesheet
line to the new timesheet line, and the old one can be removed.
In 4 and 5, sometimes we can't open a timesheet without error, and other times we can open it but not submit it. We are not 100% clear on all the different causes for each. Each of these issues are suspected to be contributing the the misalignment of
data between project actuals and timesheets, which can be a real problem for external projects for which time collected through timesheets are being used to generate invoices.
Although these may seem like separate issues, warranting separate questions, I decided to post them together because they all seem to be related to synchronization of project assignments and timesheet lines for custom billing categories.
Any thoughts or suggestions from the community would be appreciated.

There are many causes for each of the errors mention. It would be best to put one issue to the forum at a time. For example, some of these issues occur then tasks are deleted from projects but a timesheet has been submitted. Depending
on the scenario, some of these issues have been fixed with the latest service pack.
Other issues are due to bad scheduling habits with the project managers and so first determining what they have done can help resolve some the issues.
_error Loading, is because something is NULL in the data and the jave is choking when it build the form. Again, these may be because of delete tasks, resources, projects or someone doing copying and pasting of rows.

PS. Train your PM to not COPY and PASTE rows in project schedules. It can be done, but it can create problems. There are over 500 fields and some have unique data and the copy paste creates havic.

About delete of my project

If you don't know that, I assume you don't have a running subversion server :-(
Did you set up the workspace yourself? In this case you would know is you used subversion or any other source control system.
Don't you have a backup?
Have you checked your file system? May be the files are still available.

Just "upgraded" to Premiere Pro CC (Mac) - what about my Premiere Elements Projects?

I just purchased a Creative Cloud membership - and was very excited to get started... However, I have just learned that I cannot open my Premiere Elements projects in Premiere Pro - because I use a Mac. Does anyone have any suggestions for the BEST way for me to be able to work on my existing Elements projects in Pro? I'm assuming that I need to export the Elements projects into .mov or .mpeg formats, etc. and then import them that way. Obviously I will only be able to edit the "finished product" - and not undo/redo effects/transitions/etc.. If I'm on the right track, can someone let me know the best export settings to use?
ALSO - I had been using the Elements Organizer for all of my clips/video etc. - I'm going to assume that Premiere Pro does not interface with this?

Constant Rendering in FCP ruining my project

Is it necisary to render constantly in FCP to see what the outcomes is. I have used other video editing packages and have never had to do this. It is really getting in the way of the workflow. A lot of the time I just want to try something and I have to render just to see if it works.
Even just a music file requires rendering otherwise you just get a beep.

I'm guessing that your sequence settings are different from those of the material you are working with in FCP. Look at the the information provided in the Browser about your original video clips, and make sure that the sequence you are editing them in has the same settings. You are probably editing DV material in a DVCPro 50 sequence (or something like that - make sure that the pixel ratios match, like maybe you are using square pixels or something). Normally you shouldn't have to render for a lot of basic effects. Also make sure that the "RT" setting (next to the timeline TC window) is set to dynamic. This will make it even less necessary to to render during previewing. If you are editing some formats like mp4, or any mpeg compressed footage (I think) you will have to render it. If that is the case export all your footage in a normal video format like DV NTSC 48Khz and edit the export.
