Amber light

my recently bought airport express has just inexpicably started flashing amber light, and I don't even know what issue to address because it doesn't appear on airport utility. help!

Hi Ely
What operating system are you using? OSX (Mac) or iOS (iPad etc)? I can only speak for OSX.
System Preferences > Network > at the bottom of that window is a button 'Assist me...'
Click on that button to see Network Diagnostics. Follow the instructions. It will probably end up telling you to turn off your modem/router/airport. Turn them all off, wait 10 seconds and turn them back on. Wait to see if Diagnostics tells you your connection is working.

Ian.

  • Amber light won't work, green still does

I've encountered an odd problem, albeit not that serious. When I first plug my magsafe power adapter in the light on the magnet part turns green, then instead of turning to amber as it previously did it simply goes off. The computer is showing that it is charging in the menu bar. I haven't been able to fully charge it yet, and when I do I will post a reply to see if the light turns green when it has a full charge, if so I guess the little led burned out.

Yes, the green light goes on when the battery is fully charged, so it must be that the amber light is simply dead. Quite rare, I would imagine, LED's are usually pretty resilient.

  • Magsafe Adapter show amber light but it's not charging.

I have a problem with my Macbook Air (Mid 2011), when I plug the Magsafe AC Power Adapter sometimes just doesn't charge the battery, sometimes shows the green light and sometimes the amber light.
I tried restarting the SMC, also I tried to use other Magsafe Adapter. Even I tested the Magsafe with another Macbook and works fine.
I already cleaned both ports with a toothbrush.
I don't know what else I can do. Please help me.

Do you have a friend with a MacBook? If so try their power adapter and see if that works. If it does then you have a bad power adapter. And check this Apple Support article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713

I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is blinking.  When I go to utilities and try to find the airport express it does not show up.
    What should I do?

Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • New airport express flashes amber light

I just purchased an airport express. It keeps flashing the amber light. This morning my mac mini recognized its existence. It won't even recognize it tonight. On my computer, it says that the airport express is connected to our network, which is odd. I am not sure if the device is defective, or if there is anything I can do to remedy this. A call to the internet service provider indicates that the airport express is supported by their internet services. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there
You may need to set up your Ax using the Airport Utility found in your utility folder. Double-click this app and go through the steps of the setup. This utility app will scan and find your Ax automatically. When you have gone through the setup process it should turn green
You may reset your Ax using a pin and go through the process from the beginning.
    Good luck.

  • I have just got an Airport time Capsule for back up how do I do it? Do I put the ethernet cable into the back of my sky hub because when I do that the amber light on my Time Capsule flashes amber. Please talk in simple terms as I am a

I have just got an Apple Airport time capsule to back up my one year old iMac......how do I do it? I have tried putting an ethernet cable into the time capsule and to my sky hub, all I get is a flashing amber light, can anyone help I am a silver surfer not used to Apple products, but love them, plus I don't understand half of the jargon....HELP please

Apple's Setup Guide for the Time Capsule is pretty simple and clear for most users, and you don't indicate at what point or step that you are getting stuck.
So, please go to page 8 in your Setup Guide to review the topic of Plugging In Your AirPort Time Capsule.
The Sky hub will likely have 4 Ethernet <--> ports on the back of the device. Pick any one that you want and connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the port that you choose.
Then, connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the WAN (circle of dots) port as shown in the Setup Guide.
Continuing with the instructions on page 8 of the Setup Guide, power up the Time Capsule by connecting the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule to a wall AC jack.
Note that the instructions indicate that the indicator light will be solid amber during startup, and it will change to blinking amber during the setup. The light will remain blinking amber until you have configured the Time Capsule at which time the light will turn green.
Next, go to page 12 of the Setup Guide to see the information to Use your Mac or iOS device to set up your AirPort Time Capsule.
You indicated in your tag line that you were using OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), and since that will exceed the minimum requirement of a Mac using OS X (10.7.5) as noted in the guide, you can use your Mac to set up the Time Capsule.
Continuing with the instructions on page 12 of the Setup Guide......
    1. Open AirPort Utility on your Mac.  It is located as follows:  Finder (the smiley face on the dock) > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    2. Select your AirPort Time Capsule and click Continue. You won't be able to do this, but read further......If you do not see the AirPort Time Capsule that you want to configure, choose it from the WiFi status menu in the menu bar, at the top of the screen.
So, clicking on the WiFi icon will yield a small window that looks like this:
The example below shows an AirPort Extreme.  You will see Time Capsule on your screen. Click on Time Capsule.
When you click on Time Capsule, that will get the setup wizard going. it will take a minute to analyze the network, then display a screen that looks similar to the illustration below, except that you will see a picture of a Time Capsule on your screen
    3. Continuing with the Setup Guide.......Follow the onscreen prompts to create a new network
Network Name...........Type in a simple name that you want to call your network. Do not use the suggested name.
Base Station Name....Type in a simple name that you want to call the Time Capsule.  Mine is TC, for example.
Password...................Type in a password that will be used for both the network and the Time Capsule.  Write that down.
Verify..........................Type in the password again to Verify
    Click Next
The setup wizard will configure everything for you. When you see the message of Setup  Complete, click Done.
The Time Capsule is now set up and it will display a green light.

  • Airport Express 801.11b/g and the neverending, unconfigurable blinking amber light

Gather round and let me tell you a tale. Once upon a time I bought an airport express 801.11b/g and I was very happy to use it for airtunes, extending a wi-fi network and the wireless printing capabilities. One day, it beagn flashing a scaaaary amber light. The base station stopped showing up in my airport utility 5.6 as well. The only way to get it to show up, was to hard reset it, and lose all the configurations I once enjoyed happily. After the hard reset, It would show up in the utility, and I would reconfigure it to do all its cool things it once did, and it would restart. But sadly, after restarting the blinking amber light came on a again. It would also not show up in the utility unless I hard reset it again, and the same thing happened over and over and over until I felt like pulling my hair out.
I decided to get another airport express a few months later, ultimately deciding that the unit must have just been defective. Bad luck. But - the second unit literally went through the SAME EXACT THING. Worked for a while, then onto the blinking amber light- hard reset- reconfigure-blinking amber light thing. Over and over and over. Just like the first one. The end.
So - either Im missing something totally fundamental or I had the misfortune of getting two defective units in a row. Both were bought used from different places, and worked "fine" for previous owners. Am I corrupting these things or what?
I have spent literally hours trying all the resets, configuring "workarounds" and nothing works. For both of them.
What do I do with these two devices? I don't need two shiny white paperweights.
    Please advise,
    Thanks.

Yes. It seems an integral part of the set up process though, you don't have to seperately configure the airport do you?
My wireless security is WPA/WPA2 Personal. When I go through the standard network set up, it automatically enters my wireless security settings. So it doesn't really seem to give an option to specifically set that option on the airport if that makes sense?
I did go through maunual mode to try that with the same result:
If I'm using the airports own network and connect to the wifi, no security, then I'm getting airtunes from my macbook. Of course this means it's plugged into my router via ethernet which isn't any use to me as I want it in my kitchen, and would rather not limit my apple devices to b/g when I have a decent N router, and would also mean running a huge ethernet cable across my house!
The seller has said it worked for him but he's not up to scratch on his tech, so if I'm sure it's malfunctioning he'll refund. Obviously this is great news and he seems like a very nice guy so I want to be certain it's not me malfunctioning before I send it back!
So in summary I have it functioning on it's OWN network:
Wireless mode: Create a wireless network
Wireless network name: Apple Network XXXXXX
    etc
Once 'wireless mode' is switched from 'create a wireless network' to 'join a wireless network' I select my current WiFi, security and password, checked the TCP/IP settings all good. Select 'Update'. Get the warning that device and network will be temporarily unavailable am I sure I want to continue. Then it goes through the same as before, says it's succesful, restarts to flashing amber with no way of accessing it unless I hard reset.
Thanks for the help so far...

  • HT4600 i Get a solid amber light sometimes, bUT all works fine. I have to unplug the airport extreme to reset it and then it turns green and starys that way for a week or so and then turns back to amber. why is this and how do i fix it ?

I gat a solid amber light once a week on my airport extreme, but all works fine. I have to unplug it to reset it and then the light turns back to green and it is good for another week and then it happens again. why is this and what can i do to fix it ?

Solid amber on an AirPort Extreme is an indication that the internal power supply is starting to act up.
If the AirPort Extreme is in warranty, it shouid be exchanged for another AirPort Extreme.
If the AirPort Extreme is several years old, keep any eye on things. When/if you find that you are having to reset the device several times a week, it's time to start thinking about a replacement device, as the end is near.

  • My Time Capsule does not recognize internet after DSL problem. I can hard wire my computer but cannot get TC to do wireless.  How do I reset?  I have unplugged for a reboot but the amber light is flashing.

I had a problem with DSL service provider.  They have corrected their problem but now, I can only hard wire into my desktop for internet access.  If I plug in through the Time Capsule, I get no wireless service.  I unplugged the Time Capule and rebooted but now the amber light is blinking tellimg me that it cannot access internet.  So, I have hard wired back to my Mac and need to know how to get the Time Capsue to recognize the internet when I plug into it.

Start with a factory reset and do setup over again.
If the DSL modem is working as router.. which will be the case for most people then the TC must be in bridge mode..
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.

  • Airport extreme blinking amber light error when connecting to new modem

I have just bought and installed a new modem gateway.  It is an Arris TG852G DOC 3.0 model with a built in WiFi router.
After connecting it and activating it through Comcast, I reset, then reconnected my airport extreme MD0331LL/A Model No. A1408 to the new Arris
modem, I am getting blinking amber lights on the base station.  I have internet connectivity, but I am still getting an amber light.  My wireless devices (ipad and iphones) all see the old network name and id and seem to work just fine.
When I scanned for my airport base station in my airport utility (version 5.6.1)  to try to resolve the error message I get
a message stating that the Airport Utility is not detecting any airport devices.
I cannot reset the default settings as these buttons do not work within the Airport Utility.
I suspect interference between the built in router in the Arris and I understand I need to operate it in bridge mode.  Can you please help me fix this.
The COMCAST people are extremely unhelpful, and stated that this is not their problem but a problem with my router
as they have provifded me  internet connectivity through the modem and the issue is my problem.

Try connecting an Ethernet cable from your computer directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to see if AirPort Utility can detect the AirPort Extreme that way.
If yes, click on the AirPort Extreme and then click directly on the word Status (2nd line on the summary page)
A window will open to explain why the amber light is blinking
If the message indicates that you need to configure the AirPort in Bridge Mode......
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right of the window to save the new setting and restart the AirPort Extreme
You can disconnect the Ethernet cable that you were using to configure the AirPort Extreme now
It would be a good idea to power off both the Arris gateway and the AirPort Extreme now
    Wait a minute
Start the Arris first, and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
    You should be all set

  • I am upgrading wi-fi router from Airport Express to Airport Extreme. I followed set up instructions yet I am still getting the flashing amber light and cannot setup (using manual setup or the continue button).  What should I do??

    Hello,
I am upgrading my wireless router from an Airport Express to an Airport Extreme.  After disconnecting the Express and plugging the Extreme via ethernet cable to the modem, I am receiving a flashing amber light after connecting the power source.  I also reset the modem while the Extreme was still powered and plugged into the modem, but no luck.  I also tried resetting the modem and the Extreme and still no resolution.  Please advise.  Thank you!

This error usually occurs when the Windows Firewall and/or anti-virus software blocks the connection attempt from the PC to the AirPort Extreme.
Microsoft Security Essentials can do the same thing.
Things would be much easier if you had a Mac or iPhone or iPad to set up the AirPort Extreme. Otherwise try turning off the Windows Firewall and Anti-Virus programs, etc on the PC.
Restart the PC, then see if the PC can contact the AiPort Extreme. It will likely help to connect an Ethernet cable from the PC to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme. You can disconnect the Ethernet cable once the AirPort Extreme has been configured.
Re-enable the Windows Firewall, Anti-Virus, etc and restart the PC.

  • Self Assigned IP Addresses amber lights and no internet HELP!

Ok bear with me as I try to explain my prediciment!
I have an imac G5 with a Airport Extreme card properly connected and currently at full signal! The problem I'm having is that when i click safari (or IE) it doesn't load up any pages and a littke box pops up saying that it cannot find the server! so I go to network settings in system preferences and check the network status. I have an amber light and it says "airport connected to (my server) IP address self assigned your mac may not be able to connect to the internet" the problem is it is not self assigned it is done through DHCP.
I have had internet working perfectly at another house and it has worke don the odd occasion for a couple of days here so I don't think its a fault card (as i say it picks up a signal fine). I have tried putting in all info in manually but this has not helped (although on 1 occasion it did). I have baffeled the university technician with this problem. Im currently using ethernet to connect but this is no good as I need the computer in my bedroom and not the dining room (student accomodation) if you have any suggestions or have experienced this problem yourselves i would be delighted to hear of any answers and suggestions!

    Hi,
Duane is right in that if ACL's (access control lists) are set on the wireless access point, (as they are in my school) you will need your mac address of your airport card to add to the router.
Here's what I would do.... Open up Network Prefs in the System Prefs app. Create a "New" location and name it whatever you want ("Wireless at Home"). In the "Show" drop down menu, select airport. You should see 5 tabs in the airport window. Airport, TCP/IP, PPoE, Appletalk and Proxies. Click the airport tab and select automatically where it asks you what default network you want to join. You'll also find your mac address for your airport card in that pane. Next, click on TCP/IP and select DHCP from the IPv4: drop down menu, make sure no information is showing in this window. In other words, no numbers in DHCP or DNS servers, etc. If it's blank and ready to go, hit apply. The router should then hand off an IP address. Close system prefs and look in the menu on the upper right hand corner of your screen (by the date and time). See the airport fan? Does it have black bars through it? Or are they grey? Or, does it just look like a blank semicircle (airport is not turned on). If you don't see this menu, go back to network prefs and open the new location you've just made and go back to the airport tab. There is a check box in there that says, show airport status in menu bar. Turn that on. Now, go back to the menu and if the bars are grey, click on the fan and see if your network is listed there. Click on that to join. You have made a new location with fresh DHCP settings and told your airport card to connect automatically to whatever network is available.
Your tech guy at school is probably a PC head and that's why he's been stumped. He shouldn't be.
    Hope that helps.

  • TC solid AMBER LIGHT then dies. Apple won't help.

Over the weekend my time capsule powered off. When I tried to restart it, it went to a solid amber light for 15-30 seconds, and then died.
I unplugged it for half an hour, same problem, unplugged it overnight, same problem.
Soft reset won't work, hard reset won't work. Can't access it with ethernet.
Tried factory reset many times, solid amber light starts to blink, then when I release reset button (having held it for various amount of time) it goes solid amber, for a split second it sounds like it might start, then dies. No light. D E A D.
So, I've researched it online, and it seems a little different to the heat / power issue. I call Apple support, and the first tech just tries to order me a new one. My serial number 819 however prevents this. So a senior advisor comes on to tell me it can't be replaced. He get's cut off....
So I call back, and the tech reads the notes and basically tells me there is nothing that can be done, and is quite blasé about the whole thing. He offers me no advice and makes no attempt to diagnose the problem, just tells me it's done and I need to buy a new one as I don't have applecare.
I point out (nicely) it's only two years old, I expected more, it's supposed to be server grade, etc.
He replies "It's only a hard drive" which I found very interesting. ONLY A HARD DRIVE? So why did I pay $340 for it? He also tells me I should have backed up my back ups. So how many "server grade" back ups do I need to make? I need to buy 5 time capsules to back up my macbook incase 4 of them just give up suddenly? He also says that it's an electronic device and electronic devices fail. Just like that. May as well have just said "Tough luck, buddy!"
Later he tries to retract that statement and puts me through to another senior advisor. Predictably she tells me the same thing. No offer of repair or attempts to diagnose problem, just it's finished. She was as nice as she could be about it, but that's the conclusion. Eventually after I explained I was disappointed with this attitude, she said maybe I could take it to the genius bar to have the information taken off and moved to a new TC.
So basically, my new drive will be costing me in the region of $700 (given that my original $340 TC is only good for the trash).
My current thinking is I shall try and retrieve the data myself, use one of my other much, much cheaper external HD's that have been running flawlessly for years as a back up, and wait to see if Apple start to issue replacements for my serial number.
Ultimately I don't want a free replacement TC, I'd rather mine worked. I was expecting a better service, at least an attempt to make me feel like this was out of the ordinary, or they were concerned about me buying more Apple products in the future.... I was also expecting a server grade HD to last more than two years.....
Anyway, stepping off my soap box..... If anyone has any suggestions how I can get this going, or what the cause might be please before I try and retrieve the data myself.
    Thanks!

I had the same problem while doing a backup.  My Capsule is a 2008 model, but an "818" in the serial number so it's not part of the recall.
THIS IS HOW I RETREIVED MY DATA FROM MY DEAD TIME CAPSULE:
Put time capsule in Zip-lock freezer bag and suck all the air out of the bag using a straw.
Put time capsule into deep freezer for a few hours. (the zip lock is to stop/reduce humidity on the electronics inside the capsule)
Remove from freezer, cross your fingers and plug it in.
On mine, after the solid yellow light went out, there was loud fans and lots of noise.  Let it boot for a couple minutes and either connect to it wireless/ethernet and start transferring your data.  Depending on how cold your freezer is (deep freeze is usually -18C/0F and house freezer is -9C/15F) will probably depend on how long the TC is up and running.  Mine ran for 45min straight, then i was done transferring and left it to see if it was fully operational again.  Checked back on it an hour later and the drive had stopped and the light was off...
You could even try to run it from inside the freezer as well...
    GOOD LUCK!!

  • My apple TV has stopped working completely.  Just a flashing Amber light

My Apple TV has stopped working.  When it is turned on I just get a flashing amber light and it does not turn blue as normal.  It doesn't connect wirelessly to my Mac and it doesn't connect to the TV.  I do not get the setup menu and it is totally unresponsive to the remote control.  I have tried connecting it directly to my Mac but this also does nothing.  I am at a loss as to what to do next.  I have a lot of films and music stored on it and I am worried that I have lost it all.  I am not sure which generation it is, but it is the silver one, model number A1218.  Can anyone help?

Unfortunately, it sounds as though your Apple TV 1 has failed. Unlike the later Apple TVs, you cannot connect it to iTunes to restore it.

  • My Air port is not working the wifi - just an amber light blinking. What's going on ?

My air port is not working the wifi - just an amber light blinking. What's going on ?

Sorry it is just not enough info to be able to figure it out.
Do a full factory reset and start over.. that is the best way out of the hole.
Using ethernet is far far superior to using wireless at least for setup.
Using iOS device with airport utility is better than using wireless via a Mac with airport utility if you have MBA or MBPr.. but it is still better to buy a usb or thunderbolt to ethernet dongle so you have actual real connection and not a vapourous one.

the time capsule is giving flashed amber light and i cant connect it to my mac book pro. i want to use it with the time machine to make backup for my mac. please advice me.

To do the setup, plug it in via ethernet.. do not try to setup over wireless.. Once it is setup you can plug the TC into the network and use wireless.
Most likely you will use the TC in bridge to an existing modem router.. but we cannot help as you have no details of the network setup.
I do recommend in the setup of the TC you use SMB type names.. that means, short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. as later Mac OS do have issues with long names, spaces and that apple shocker, the apostrophe.
