Analog i/O Speedy-33

Hi,
I have a Speedy-33 that seems to run fine with the example vis, so far.
As I want to use it for things like position controllers for example, I need analog inputs and outputs.
As far as I read, the connectors on the board are AC-coupled, so that I cannot use them. I have read about expansion connectors on the board, but the information about this, that I found on the ni-site is controvers about it.
Then I have read about a robotics daughterboard.
Is this useful for the task?
Does anybody have experience?
Regards
Norman Butzek

The SPEEDY-33 does provide for the use of a separate motor control module, but this module does not provide any additional analog I/O than that supplied on the SPEEDY-33. There are several VIs that allow interaction with the motor control module and include RC Speed Control, Motor Drive Control, and Servo Drive Control.

  • Analog inputs on the NI SPEEDY 33

I am working on the DSP module NI speedy 33. I would like to know if the analog inputs can be used to connect a rotative button which can give an analog signal, and then
be used in the VI. Maybe it sounds like a silly question, but when i read some documentations, in the analog inputs paragraph, they always mention only  that you can, through analog input,
connect some daughter modules, that's it. So, i am a bit confused about it. Anybody can help me on it ?

Reading from the manual found here http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/371577b.pdf, on page 21 of 43 it talks about the J4 and J6.
"A set of two connectors, J4 and J6, make up the standard expansion analog I/O connectors, that can be used for optional daughter modules. The daughter modules can be used for applications requiring different A/D and/or D/A functionality than that provided by the standard 16-bit stereo CODEC normally found on the NI SPEEDY-33."
That makes me think that using bare J4 or J6 is not possible.  Anyone else ever find a way around this?

  • Analog out DMA performance problems

I'm working on an open-source driver for m-series and e-series boards (http://www.comedi.org). I've discoved some performance problems doing dma to analog outputs that I can't resolve. In summary, dma transfers to the analog output of a PXI-6281 in a pxi crate being controlled through a mxi-4 connection (pxi-pci8336) are VERY slow. I'm talking 250k samples/sec slow. That's the maximum speed the dma controller can fill the board's analog output fifo from host memory. I've also got an older PXI-6713 in the same crate, and dma transfers to it are about 15 times faster (about 3.5M samples/sec). I did notice that clearing the dma burst enable bit in the mite chips channel control register caused the 6713 to slow way down to something comparable to the 6281 (about 500k samples/sec). Setting or clearing the burst enable bit had no effect on the speed of the 6289. Is there some special mojo that needs to be done to enable burst transfers on the 6289? Also, even the relatively speedy 6713 does dma transfers much slower than it should, since the pxi-pci8336 advertises 80MB/sec sustained transfer rates over mxi4. Can you provide any insight into this matter? I've already looked through the ddk, and a register level document describing the mite chip, and example code which had chipobjects for the mite and an analog input example.
By the way, dma transfers for analog input on the 6281 weren't as bad, I didn't measure the transfer time, but I was at least able to do input at 500k samples/sec without fifo overruns.
I'll post more detailed performance measurements in a subsequent post, and include measurements for a couple other similar pci boards (a pci-6289 and pci-6711). In case you're wondering, neither of the pci boards get anywhere close to the bandwidth provided by the pci bus, but they're not as spectacularly bad as the pxi-6281.

    Here are my measurements:
    PCI-6711, tested on 1.4GHz Pentium 4:
5.2 to 5.3 milliseconds to load fifo to half-full using dma. 0.9 to 1.0 microseconds to write to a 16-bit register. 1.9 to 2.1 microseconds to read from a 16-bit register. The mite's burst enable bit has no effect.
    PXI-6713, tested on 3.2GHz Pentium D:
2.2 to 2.4 milliseconds to load fifo to half-full using dma. 0.5 to 0.7 microseconds to write to a 16-bit register. 5 to 7 microseconds to read from a 16-bit register. Turning off the mite's burst enable bit causes the dma fifo load time to increase to 16 to 17 milliseconds.
    PCI-6289, tested on 3GHz Pentium 4:
2.0 to 2.2 milliseconds to load fifo to half-full using dma. 0.4 to 0.6 microseconds to write to a 16-bit register. About 1.2 microseconds to read from a 16-bit register. The mite's burst enable bit has no effect. I could do streaming analog output on 1 channel with an update rate of about 2.1MHz before the board's fifo started to underrun.
    PXI-6281, tested on 3.2GHz Pentium D:
18 to 19 milliseconds to load fifo to half-full using dma. 0.3 to 0.4 microseconds to write to a 16-bit register. 4 to 6 microseconds to read from a 16-bit register. The mite's burst enable bit has no effect. I could do streaming analog output on 1 channel with an update rate of about 250kHz before the board's fifo started to underrun.
Notes: the 671x boards have a 16k sample ao fifo, the 628x boards have 8k.
The 4 to 7 microseconds times to read a register on the PXI boards seems large too, is that normal overhead for going over the mxi-4 connection?
I wasn't doing anything else intensive on the pci bus during these tests. For what it's worth, according to pci specs the two pci boards should be able to dma their analog output fifos to half full in less than 150 microseconds.

  • Speedy 33 background noise

    Hello,
We are finishing a project with the Speedy-33. The analog outputs are connected to a small amplifier for headphone listening. When connecting headphones directly to the Speedy-33 output or to the headphone amplifier, a background noise is heard : it sound like a tone. As you can imagine the amplifier jsut make it more audible. But the tone is present even without the amplifier ... so it is clearly from the speedy-33 output.
The speedy-33 is running in standalone mode ... as the USB connection tends to make a huge amount of noise.
We tried to listen to the Speedy-33 in "full bypass" (the labview patch is the mere connection of the input to the output) ... in that case only, their is no noise. As soon as we put any processing (exemple: we tested a single biquad between the outs and the ins) ... we get the famous background tone.
Any information about Speedy-33 background noise ... caused by the DSP or any other component on the board? Any advice?
    Many thanks,

    Thanks to all !
The main trouble is that when connecting directly the inputs to the outputs, the noise is not there. When a process is added between the input and the output (like a simple biquad as mentioned by PaGauthier), the board is generating a "sine" background noise.
In our application, the speedy is running in standalone mode using a DC power supply. The power suply was changed twice to make sure that it was not a noise coming from it (we used an analog regulated one, and a switching one with the same results)
The inputs are feeded with simple electret preamp using transistors or opamps (we have two preamps because we were thinking that is was radio frequencies interferences). The bandwidth of the preamp is quite large but the capsule itself is limited to 20kHz... and once again, when there is no process between the inputs dans the outputs, no background noise is added.
I have a simple question : Is there an aliasing filter onboard for each input ? If yes, I hope that designers did not simply added those filters at the nyquist frequency... In most cases, 80 to 90 % of the nyquist frequency is better... This could explain a 400Hz of aliasing : but couldn't explain that the added noise is a simple sine.
PaGautier and I will test the board next week to make it clear about aliasing filters.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Speedy-33 feedback loop

Hi, i'm using speedy-33 as my DSP target and i wish to perform a feedback loop. i tried the example found in the NI website but it shows error that the array size is mismatch.
Does anyone know how the data flows?
Let say when i create an analog input, it is a 1-D array. Inorder to create a feedback loop i need to create an array of known size 1st, am i right to say that?? From there onwards, wat are some of the ways that i can can my array size or when do i need to alter my array?
    Can anyone pls help??
    Thanks

    Hi steven,
    Thanks for the reply,
Using labview 8.2, DSP target speedy-33
Currently i'm trying to get a feed back from my sample delay function then add back to my signal to create a reverberation effect.
    problem
1)the waveform i see from my waveformchart are square wave.
2)I try to set my frame size at 1024 but the programm just run for a few sec and stop.
3)my audio signal sounds like transformer singing!!
can someone help me point out where my problem lies on??
    Thanks in advance.

  • Whether it is possible to drive a stepper motor from speedy 3's output

actually i am trying to design an voice controlled wheel chair for my application wat i have did is tat i have writern two programs using labview one is just storing my voice for four commands(namely front ,frontright ,frontleft, stop) ,tat  it stores some value in an array, in my second vi i am speaking one of the four commands, and tat comands amplitude is stroed in an array and i am just comparing it with the values from the first array which i have stored it for all the four commands if any of the array value matches just approximately the i have to make the stepper motor to drive in tat direction i have done it with PIC microcontroller can u give some directions to implement using speedy33

    Hi,
The SPEEDY-33 Robotics Daugher Module is an add-on device that mounts onto the SPEEDY-33 to provide more functionality. It includes:
    DC Motor Drive Outputs (4)
    Auxiliary Servo Motor Outputs (4)
    Analog Inputs (4)
    External Power Supply Connection
Details of the daughter module, you cn find at the link below:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/832F1F4B12ECE1BE862572D100765898?OpenDocument
This daughter module is NOT an NI product.
For connecting a stepper motor, since speedy 33 has digital outputs, it is possible to work a stepper motor. However, you will have to connect a stepper motor drive inorder to amplify the signals to the current specifications that the stepper motor demands. Find out the specs of your motor and choose an appropriate drive.

  • Unable to capture analog video.

    Hi,
I am running Premier Pro CS3 on a Windows XP machine. This is a new machine to me provided by my work. I am trying to capture analog video from a VHS deck that has both S-video and composite outs. The IT folks installed an ATI TV Wonder HD 650 PCI Digital & Analog TV Tuner to use as a capture card. In the device manager it shows up as an ATI Radeon HD2400 card. I don't have anyway of discerning the difference, and this may or may not be the main issue. When I open Premier and try to capture, it does not recognize the card as a capture device. Any clues about how to make this work would be great.
    Thanks,
    sarah

Premiere Pro does not natively capture from TV or graphics cards.

  • New Mac Mini and Analog TV

I just bought a new March 2009 Mac Mini. I am trying to hook it up to and old analog TV. The TV has SVIDEO and RCA jacks. I purchased the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter only to find out it will not work with the new model. It seems the new model only outputs DVI-D and not DVI-I.
I am trying to hook up the mini-dvi to SVIDEO on the back of my TV and then for the audio connect them to the TV with RCA jacks. Is there any way to get the new mac mini to work with an analog TV?
    Thanks

When you cite "VGA converter to RCA" do you mean a little box that actually converts the signal down to RCA/composite, like this:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&pid=4724&seq=1&format=2
or simply an adaptor like this one:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040113&pid=2509&seq=1&format=2
The crucial thing I'm waiting to find out is whether the new Minis provide ANY analog video signal to either of the video ports at all (which would seem to be the case, since VGA is analog, right?), or if the analog roadblock is simply caused by the currently available adaptors.

I want to buy a new apple tv but it used hdmi cables and my house is only wired for analog.  Is there any way I can use the apple tv on analog cables?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    It's do-able, but I don't think it's a great idea.
    DVI
Some users with DVI have managed to get their TV's to work with DVI-HDMI cables. DVI carries no audio, so alternative connections need to be explored to enable audio. DVI doesn't necessarily support HDCP as well as other standards used by HDMI (which may or may not be an issue)
    Analogue
There are hardware converters that will convert HDMI to various other types of output, however there are some issues with doing so that you should be aware of.
    HDCP
HDCP compliant converters will not allow you to watch HDCP protected content such as that from the iTunes Store. Non compliant converters exist but we cannot discuss them under the Terms of Use for these communities.
    Resolution and aspect ratio
I'm not aware of any converters that will scale the output from the Apple TV, any TV or projector which is used will need to be widescreen and support resolutions of 720p (Apple TV 2), 720p/1080p (Apple TV 3)
    DAC
DAC (Example Only - Not a recommendation or suggestion that this is suitable in your circumstances)

  • Analog inputs no longer working on Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro's external dr

I have an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro. After two years of use without problems, the analog inputs on the external dri've have stopped working. I get no signal from them, not even noise. All 3 inputs are silent, Line in / Mic and Line 2 in the front, and Line 3 in the back. Otherwise the dri've appears to function normally - I get output from the headphone jack, and the volume control knob works. I have not tested digital inputs or outputs, as I currently have no digital devices to connect to them.
I had made no major changes to my computer - software or hardware - when the problems began. I recently added a new SATA hard dri've, but the Audigy dri've did work after that.
I've taken steps suggested in another thread on this forum and uninstalled all Creative software and drivers, used the latest driver package's uninstall program as well as Driver Cleaner, and finally manually deleted everything related to Creative and Audigy from the system registry (and rebooted quite a few times in between). I then installed the original drivers from the CD that came with the sound card (a setup that has worked before), but still the problem persists.
Any ideas on where to even begin looking for a solution? I find it hard to believe that it's a hardware problem, since three inputs suddenly went silent at the same time, and no other connections were affected. Yet I've done as clean a reinstall as possible, and that hasn't solved the problem.
    My current computer configuration:
OS: Windows XP Pro (SP2 and all latest updates)
    CPU: Athlon XP 500+
    RAM: 2x 52 MB
Motherboard: Abit AN7 (integrated sound chip disabled)
Video card: Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro
    Network card: D-Link DFE-530TX
    Hard dri've : Seagate ST320026A, 20 GB IDE
    Hard dri've 2: Maxtor 6L080J4, 80 GB IDE
    Hard dri've 3: Seagate ST330083, 300 GB SATA-II

I don't have a Platinum Pro or the dri've, but a general hardware troubleshooting step I would take would be to remove the soundcard and either move it to another slot or re-seat it. Also, I'd disconnnect and reconnect all cables to and from the card and the dri've. If I had another machine I could try the card or dri've in, I'd do that. If I could borrow another dri've or even another card, I'd test those too. (Swapping parts is often the simplest diagnostic.) Yeah, maybe it's not a hardware problem, but I'd take these steps just to rule out some possibilities.
Edit: And if you can remove or disconnect the SATA dri've and restore the system to the condition before you installed it, that's another good test.Message Edited by Katman on 2-8-2005 2:56 AM

  • Can I view video in analog form from Audition? and if so what version?

I am using Pro 1.5 and Audition 1.5 and I would like to use the multitrack audio out along with the (analog) video output to a projector. I can't see it in Audition and from reading I thought there might be a way to link PRO and AUD to get it done. Is there a way?

Well, you've found all I was hoping for you and better.  Those upstarts over at Reaper...  so much less programming overhead (and probably no free time either!).  Hopefully Adobe will "catch up" someday, but one thing Reaper can't do is offer inter-program compatability between Premiere, Audition, etc.  That's the sort of features that slow down direct-to-monitor previews but strenthen the larger picture.
Anyway, glad you found that and good success to you.

  • Capture analog video

Hi, when i have a g5 with finalcut 5 i can capture analog video (betacam conected to a dvcam recorder then with a "non controlable device" and then "capture now") now, with the mac pro and fcp 6 i can't.
there are no signal to capture, what can i do?

The deck is in e/e if you can see the analog signal in the log and capture window. If you can't see it, it's probably not in e/e... keep looking, all pro decks have this function. The other thing you should be able to do is dub the source tape to the digital recorder. Make sure too the input selection on the machine is set up properly.

  • Best way to Capture Analog Video (via DV)

I have no issues with capturing DV video froma DV Camcorder in PRE. The process is very smooth and I really am comfortable with it. However, when I am capturing my old wedding and other personal VHS tapes (via an ADTech Pyro AV) I really hate the capture capablities within PRE ( I am use PRE 7).
I was wondering if there is any advantage to using PRE for the DV Capture for my Analog material verses using either Windows Import Video, or using some other capture program like Pinnacle Studio (which allows me to specifiy the length of the capture verses having it just run on until I stop it.) Most of my VHS tapes are 2 hours in length and I would like to be able to say capture 125 minutes then stop (so I could just run the captures at night or while I am otherwise not using the computer.) With PRE7 it will just continue capturing forever until I stop it, which creates some enormous files that then need to be trimmed.
(Does anyone know a way to tell PRE to just capture for x amount of time on a analog to DV Capture?)
Is a DV Capture the same regardless of program? Is there any advantage to actually running the capture through PRE7 verses external where I can provide better control over the length and time of the capture.

If your ADS Pyro AV Link is set up right and capturing over FireWire, you should get the same quality no matter what program you use to capture -- and that quality should be as good as the original. Premiere Elements does nothing to change the video data of DV as it captures; it just saves it as it comes in.
But I would not recommend using any program or device that captures as anything other than DV-AVIs. Otherwise you're dealing with conversion issues and possibly incompatible video files, etc.
    Does that answer your question?

  • Usb 6009 continuous analog output

    Hi
I'm pretty new to Labview, so you may have to bear with me. I have a USB-6009 and I want to generate a continuos analog output voltage. I've got the example you have posted 'Gen Mult Volt Updates-SW Timed_LV7.1 (0 to 4).vi' working and it outputs a continuous sine wave.
In a similar manner I need to generate:
    1. Ramp up voltage (and ramp down voltage): starting with a continuos constant voltage, which after a period of time linearly increases to another constant voltage, and which allows me to specify the 3 time intervals and the rate of increase.
    2. Pulsations: whereby I can specify the amplitude and time interval of each pulsation
This is so that I can control voltage to a valve which regulates my pipe flow. In the example I have (one stated above), I do not understand specifically:
    i. Why I need both a 'Software Loop Time (ms)' as well as 'Timeout'
ii. The 'Sinusoidal Pattern' input which seems to generate data for a sine wave- I can't get a description of that and there are no similar VIs for other waveforms; and what is the function of the two numbers it has?
iv. How do I change amplitude and time period for the wave?
iii. What does 'Index Array' do?
    thank you

    Hi there,
I'm guessing the VI you are using is the one from this KB:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/6F2C2B49A89D685C8625711D007BDD64
    i. The software timed loop control is to control the rate at which you change the voltage output.  The timeout on the DAQmx Write VI is the maximum time in seconds the VI will wait to output a sample (eg. if the write buffer is full, the Write VI will wait for it to become available for 'timeout' seconds before outputting an error).
ii. The sine pattern is just an array constant of doubles that make up the sine wave voltage values, and the for loop adds an offset (of two volts) to every single one of those values. You might want to replace that entire array constant and for loop with a Simulate Signal Express VI (just search for Simulate Sig or look in the Functions >> Input palette) and convert the dynamic data output to an array of doubles.  You can configure the type of waveform, amplitude, and time period from that express VI as well.
    iii.  Refer to previous answer.
iv.  Index array returns an element of an array based on the index input.  You can turn on the context help and move your mouse over functions to get more help on them.
    I hope that helps!
