Anamorphic capture preset

I have just started with FCP5.1.4. My goal was to transfer over 60 tapes of 8mm footage to digital. I bought a canon elura 100 and recorded the analog video to mini dv tapes. I then began capturing the footage using FCP. Over several months I worked away but also shot footage using the Canon. I shot this footage in widescreen. I selected preset info in FCP (easy setup) as "DV NTSC" using firewire which I thought was appropriate. However I must have changed it somewhere in the middle of my efforts to "DV-NTSC Anamorphic" maybe because I was capturing the widescreen footage (I honestly don't remember) My question is now that I am starting to create sequences I should be using the right settings and I do not know which captured media had the anamorphic settings for capture. Does this matter and is there a way to tell how the media files were captured? Any advice would be appreciated and thanks.

There will be a check in the anamorphic column of the browser for each clip to see what's set to be what... you can add this check to footage that is anamorphic but was captured 4:3...

  • Capture preset anamorphic - output aspect ratio wrong

My capture preset was dv pal anamorphic as the footage was taken on a widescreen camera. Footage looks fine in FCP6, but when I export a QT file, the aspect ratio is wrong. Why should this be and how do I correct it?

    Hi Simon,
this is because Quicktime is showing the whole file, squashed.
What is your final destination? DVD? Web? Presentation? That will depend on how you will output the file. If you are planning to play it on an SD TV, go to your timeline and make sure you change the ratio to SD with a widescreen mask.
If you want widescreen to play correctly on a standard def tv, then you need to add the mask to it. If you are planning to put it on a SD tv with widescreen, the TV's aspect ration is changed to accomodate the file. So it is playing back correctly, it is the TV that will change. This is why dvds often have two different discs, one for SD and one for wide screen.
    I hope this is helpful.

  • Anamorphic setting not working on Capture Preset

I duplicated the DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced 2:3:3:2 Pulldown to create a specific Capture Preset for doing the same but adding Anamorphic. The capture seems to go okay and I have the footage, but not in Anamorphic format. I can check the Anamorphic setting for each clip, but can't figure out why FCP isn't applying it in the first place. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Karen ,
Do you have a router and modem?  I had the same problem and unplugged both and replugged them to reset and it fixed a similar issue I had. Let me know if it works for you. Good luck Linda

  • Wrong capture presets & how to correct them

Ok, I've been a real dufus:
I have shot my material 25fps progressive, 16:9, PAL, DVCam. For reasons I can't comprehend I used the "DV PAL 48 KHz" preset and "Capture Now" to capture my whole tape, which was was successfully imported as 8 seperate clips due to (ordered) timecode breaks (using a Sony DSR-11 deck via "Firewire PAL" preset). I have created a sequence using subclips from those master clips.
    PART 1 - WRONG PRESETS?
I know I have to recapture my clips using the anamorphic setting, but rummaging around the "advanced" section of "Audio/Visual Settings>Capture Presets>DV PAL 48 KHz>Compressor" I noticed that the settings were 'interlaced' and the aspect ratio was set to 4:3. Should I change these to 'progressive' and 16:9 so I can capture/edit/output my film to same quality as I shot it?
PART 2 - CORRECTING THE PROBLEM
When I try to Batch Capture my original 8 master clips (with the new settings), it fails with the familiar "timecode error: end of tape reached" even though in 'Capture Now' FCP is meant to overcome my ordered timecode breaks with enough pre/post roll to allow me to recapture my clips. How do I get round this? I have seen a suggestion that I recapture the whole tape using the same clip names and then use "Reconnect Media" to associate my master clips to the new media files (I tested this idea with a duplicate master clip but got a warning of 'attribute mismatch' when I went to reconnect the duplicate to the newly capture media file apparently because as the media in/out timecodes weren't quite the same).

    - The 'Advanced' tab is actually in the 'Quicktime Settings' section not 'Compressor'. Do I take it that the 16:9 box in the 'Frame Size' area is for converting 4:3 on the tape to 16:9 in FCP rather than capturing 16:9 as shot on the tape?

  • Sequence and Capture Presets

I've shot and captured 35 hours of footage originally shot in HD (output in standard def 16:9) using Final Cut 5.0. After loading it and spending hours organizing it, I found my Sequence Present is 3:2 - Also the Aspect Ratio is set to NTSC-CCIR 601/DV Anamorphic 16:9 is off. Compressor is DV/DVCPro NTSC. Pixel Ratio is also NTSC-CCRI 601/DV.
Capture Preset is NTSC (3:2) Anamorphic is unchecked. Compressor is DV-NTSC. input is DCR TRV 900. I captured from a Z1U.
Can anyone tell me- aside from being a dumb *** in the first place- how I can redeem my project> ? I need this to be for professional broadcast (standard def, 16:9) - I'm on deadline and want to avoid recapturing. If I DO need to recapture, can retain markings/ subclips?
    Thanks a bunch!

Well there's a couple of things to check.
What settings did you use on the Z1U? (HDV, 1080i, 30fps?)
Did you use the capture preset mentioned in your post to capture the material? (check in the browser or item properties)
If that's the case, you have an offline version of your material and you will have to recapture the whole thing (use the HDV capture preset) or online your final edit (basically only recapturing the material used in the final edit)
I'm not sure how the online process will work in this case as I only have experience with PAL. It could prove to be tricky but someone here in the discussions forum must know if and how it's possible.

  • Anamorphic capture seems to be mis-sized in FCP

Footage I've shot with my anamorphic-lens-fitted Panasonic AG-DVX100A and captured into FCP seems to be the wrong size, even though I make sure the "anamorphic" option is always selected. The underlying QT files end up at 640 x 480, though I think true anamorphic for this camera should be at 720 x 480, should it not? On my Apple 23" cinema display, they look great, but on any other monitor, including my Apple 17" and various PC monitors, the files look like they need to be stretched out horizontally.
The output of my editing in FCP results in similarly compressed (horizontally) files, irrespective of whether I save them as QT movies, AVI files, or mpegs. The "16 x 9 anamorphic" box is always checked for my sequence presets, as it is for my "capture presets," and the boxes in the capture presets area show 720 x 480. In spite of this, everything I capture winds up at 640 x 480. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong here?
Thanks so much for your help.

  • Sequence and Capture presets for 16x9 minidv

    FCP 6.0.6
checking capture presets for sd mini dv shot in sd 16x9 (US).
what are proper sequence and capture settings?
in sequence setting - should frame size box remain ntsc dv (3:2) and then just check 16x9 anamorphic box?
in capture settings - frame size should it be ntsc dv (3:2) and then check 16x9 anamorphic box?
    thanks in advance

Go to the menu Final Cut Pro > Easy Set Up and from the drop down menu choose USE: DV-NTSC Anamorphic.
    Click Setup.
That will make all the correct settings at once.

  • Configuring Capture Presets (v. need help)

Background info: MBP with Final Cut express HD, using a DVD-R camcorder(Hitachi
    DZ-MV580A).
I previously captured video via fire wire about a week ago, however this time it is via USB.
I believe the reason why I can't capture video at the moment is because it is now connected with USB. FCE HD is telling me to change the capture presets..problem is I do not know where to go in order to do so. I appreciate any help!

I gave that option an attempt. Didn't work. My MBP doesn't initially read the camera. I plug camera in via USB, turn on camera, no response. Sometimes the MBP reads the plugged in camera as a DVD...and then my dvd-drive starts loading.

  • Capture dvi and optical digital audio-in through one custom capture preset

How can I create a FCP capture preset that will capture from a digital video to firewire box (grass valley (formerly canopus) advc-hd50) AND the optical audio in port on my desktop mac dual g5?
I have HD dvi video (which has no audio content) and digital audio (or analog for that matter) that i wish to capture in sync then edit in FCP.

if you go to audio/video settings you can duplicate a setup that is close to what you want and edit that setup. under capture presets> audio select whichever input on the mac you wish to use.
consult your documentation with the capture device for the video side. when you have something that works save that as an easy setup (on the summary tab "create easy setup")
I've never used either the optical nor analog in so I can't vouch for it's behavior however it is available as an option
Hopefully your device will somehow pass timecode so edits are repeatable

  • Cannot change "capture presets"

I try to duplicate in "audio/video settings" preferences the "capture presets" and FCP will not let me. they are locked. I can change all the other presets like sequence.
is there a way to unlock that so I can duplicate it and make changes.
    i am using FCP 6.0.5

Duplicate the preset (make a copy) then it is editable.

  • Is capture preset mistake serious?

    Hey all.
So I'm using FCP HD on a PowerMac G5.
I've imputted quite a few hours of Pal DV material from a VX2100E Sony Camera.
I've just realised that the batch capture setting was reading 'Canon DV' as the capture setting while I imputted this material. If I duplicate the DV capture preset, I can get FCP to read the camera as DV-VCR instead of Canon DV, which I assume is the correct preset for a Sony camera.
I'm obviously worried that using the Canon setting like this for the hours I've imputted so far will mean that, for example, my material is a few frames out of sync, or other such issues that stem from using the wrong capture precept. However, I don't have access to a big screen right now to play the video and check for sure whether there is a smallsync issue.
Does anyone have an information about whether I'll have an issue with this and should re-imput everything (a horrible prospect)? Okay, dumb mistake, I admit... Any notions?
    Thanks,
    Richard

I believe the setting is so that FCP knows what commands to send to the firewire "deck." This is pretty universal as firewire is firewire and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
If you want to recapture, you can delete your footage out of the caputre scratch folder and re-batch capture your footage, however if if plays fine and it's not giving your erros, you're fine.
I would only consider the audio being out of synch after viewing the footage on a properly synched device.

  • How can I ensure that the audio sample rare of my capture preset matches?

    Hi everyone
When capturing tapes I get warning that the audio sample rate of one or more of captured files does not match the sample rate on my source tape. This may cause the vidio and audeo of the media files to be out of sync. How can I make sure that the my capture preset matches the sample rate of my tape? Can anyone be able to show me how? Thank you. Faruk.

    Hi
Fuerther, I have double checked and found that none of my ten projects has sound, although audio meters settings moves up & down. Simultaniously, canvas displays that in- & out of clips are not set , and in browser I see time codes on the images when the playhead stops in timeline. I did not have this problem before. I wonder appreciate if if these issues are interrelated, and if I may have clicked something that has triggered this.
I would appreciate it if you or other friends could kindly address this problem and help me resolve the isssue. Thank you. Faruk.

  • Where are my "Capture Presets"

My FC Express has stopped recognizing my Canon XM1, and it tells to modify my capture presets and for the life of me I can't find them anywhere. I know the answer will be extremely simple but until then I'm extremely frustrated

Presets are all in easy setup under the FCE menu.

  • What are the FINAL CUT STUDIO capture presets using a "Blackmagic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card"

A S-VHS cable and a/v cables are connected to the breakout box.
    What are the presets:
    1) Sequence Preset?
    2) Capture Preset?
    3) Device Control Preset?
    thanks

    1) Sequence Preset?
    2) Capture Preset?
    3) Device Control Preset?
Is this realted to your other question? Don't post more than once, please. GEt it right the first time and then wait. Patiently.
    1. Your sequence rpeset will be determined by the production's output taarget, it has nothing to do with the Balckmagic capture unless you alreday know what that will be. And you do, in fact, because VHS only comes in one way. When you bring your fist captured clip into a sequence, FCP7 will aks if you want to confrom the sequence to the clip's settings. Say yes. Done.
    2. Your capture is going to be regular ol' DV. There's no reason to try to use any other advanced codec for VHS. But you probalby hsould have a time base corrector or frame sync in the loop to help correct and stabilize ancient tapes. Your preset if NTSV DV
    3. There is not control for a VHJS deck. So une unctrolled device.

  • QT configuration error using a capture preset...

When I opened Final Cut and went to log and capture I received this error massage:
“An error occurred while configuring QuickTime using the current capture preset. Please quit final cut and check your hardware configuration”
Since the first time this happened I have updated final cut, updated my cinewave capture card, reinstalled final cut, reinstalled QuickTime and every other process in between and I still get the error massage...

Frank already mentioned clearly in his post. I just want to share some useful links. First start with the link, like What to use When. And see the section where it clearly says we cannot share the data between the parent and its child adf region having JSFF and vice versa. This is achieved using Parameters Map etc.
