Anamorphic capture seems to be mis-sized in FCP

Footage I've shot with my anamorphic-lens-fitted Panasonic AG-DVX100A and captured into FCP seems to be the wrong size, even though I make sure the "anamorphic" option is always selected. The underlying QT files end up at 640 x 480, though I think true anamorphic for this camera should be at 720 x 480, should it not? On my Apple 23" cinema display, they look great, but on any other monitor, including my Apple 17" and various PC monitors, the files look like they need to be stretched out horizontally.
The output of my editing in FCP results in similarly compressed (horizontally) files, irrespective of whether I save them as QT movies, AVI files, or mpegs. The "16 x 9 anamorphic" box is always checked for my sequence presets, as it is for my "capture presets," and the boxes in the capture presets area show 720 x 480. In spite of this, everything I capture winds up at 640 x 480. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong here?
Thanks so much for your help.

  • HELP!! Audio Out of Sync in Anamorphic Capture... Any Help Appreciated

I've been having problems with the audio drifting when I capture anamorphic footage for longer than 10 minute segments. I've captured 4:3 NTSC DV tape to see if it was my GL2 and I also hooked up my camera to a monitor to playback the tape but the audio was in sync all the way through for both tests. Only capturing the anamorphic footage results in audio drifts regardless of any capture settings.

I am fairly new to iDVD 6 and iMovie HD (widescreen), but I an currently assembling a highlight DVD for my daughter's softball team. We are in mid season. I had been creating separate movies (per game). I extracted audio and/or added sound and video effects to some of the movies clips. Alas not only do the extracted (original audio) and added audio (outdoor cheer) disappear but also the video special effects (slow motion) are not maintained in widescreen but are pillarboxed when copied/pasted.
At any rate, I am have now created a compilation iMovie and will be dumping new footage into it as we go. Editing the compilation, as well as editing separate "save as" individual game movies.
I only had 2-3 clips that had been audio manipulated and shared those back to my video camera and then reimported from camera back to the compilation project. The extracted audio with separate tracks are now a single audio clip but at least I have audio during those clips.
To end this ramble, knowing the limitations of messing with audio and trying to cut and paste to different movies I will now create duplicate movies with a master having no audio enhancements.

    Thanks, Len
I hadn't thought about this option. It seems like a
lot of work. I wish there was an easier way. I have
archived ("Shared" to full dv quality) to DVD-ROM
discs all the raw .dv clips AFTER extracting the
audio, hoping that I could use these clips to
assemble custom DVD-Videos in the future, without
having to "Extract Audio" a second time. The .dv
clips all play perfectly with the audio synced in
Quicktime. Of course, the clip's audio was in sync
before the "Extract Audio" was applied. This sync
problem ONLY rears it's ugly head with iDVD Video
discs (don't know about DVD Pro). Thanks again for
    the suggestion.

  • Sequence settings for digibeta anamorphic capture?

I will be capturing from digibeta where the image is 16x9 anamorphic, using an AJA Kona card. What capture settings and sequence settings must I use to properly deal with the anamorphic image? I am renting the editing suite so I do not have access to it now. I need to prepare still images and titles using the same sequence settings that I will be using to capture. Does the Kona card come with sequence presets that I would not have in final cut pro 5.1, and if so can I edit my sequence settings to match?
    Thanks,
    Mike

The templates can be found in the new image settings, under "film and video" from memory.
But you could save yourself some trouble, and possibly aspect issues with an older version of Photoshop, by just making a new image in Photoshop that is 1024 x 480 (NTSC land).
Paste your images into that as your template.
Technically the images size IS 720x480 in your project, and then stretched out, but giving it 1024 x 480 starts you at a higher resolution, and avoids any graphics changing shape.
Though FCP handles larger images, and you would be fine to just have all stills under 2000 pixels, and resize in FCP.
Sure it needs to render, but then again you can do non-loss moves into stills.
    Oh, and as for presets;
I prefer to use good old ProRes(HQ) rather then card specific codecs.
This way you can archive the project to a harddrive and later edit or change in a suite with a blackmagic card, or even a cardless machine(as in capture card!).
I believe there is an anamorphic Prores(HQ) anamorphic SD option,
or at the very least you can duplicate a Prores setting and tick the anamorphic option!
If you had the harddrive bandwidth and space you could choose to go uncompressed?
Digital beta is about 2:1 10bit, so close to ProRes(HQ).
Uncompressed is best though, but takes space and speed!

  • PAL anamorphic projects seem to be coming out at export at 4:3

I have Final Cut Studio 1 with all the latest updates. I am doing more video projects these days and I've noticed that upon export things seem to be going a bit wrong. Both straight to quicktime and using compressor to export a 16:9 project and out comes a 4:3 the other end. Even in the compressor preview screen. Frame size says 720 x 576 but it's not coming out widescreen. I've done 2 projects previously that worked fine, but the latest one just baffles me.
It's a trailer completely created in Motion 2. In the motion preview screen, everything looks fine. Export it (keeping the project settings) and boom 4:3. Drop it into final cut and the same. In a project with shot video footage previewing fine in 16:9 the motion file comes out as a squashed up 4:3?
Has anyone else had this problem, did a crawl through the forum, and there were a few things similar but no real answers. It's like the Final CUt to motion 3 problem but around the other way....any ideas where I'm going wrong?

pal anamorphic is a setting used when you plan to dispaly your project on a wide screen-capable tv (because it relaly is wide screen or has the ability to change aspect ratios) so it is actually a 4:3 pal format, than when you watch on your tv you squish by telling your tv to change its aspect ratio. It is actually poor man's wide screen, as you are only using 4:3 equipment and it is not as heavy pixel wise as it is not actually filling the full wide screen resolution but cheating. To make real wide screen, that exports as wide screen without the distortion and teh necessity to squish it back down, use a non anamorphic format to begin with, or do what others have said: change the resolution of your exported file by shift dragging the corner of the quick time player window, or putting in the correct resolution in pixels.....

  • Anamorphic Capture with Panasonic AG-DVX100a 16:9?

I shot in 24p with the Panasonic Anamorphic Lens. I'm going to capture in 29.97, but I'm not sure if I should capture in widescreen or not. I want my end result to be 16:9.
The Anamorphic lens squeezed everything and I want to open that up to widescreen. I'm just not sure If I should Capture in widescreen or just change my timeline setting to widescreen, or my easy setup?
    Thanks!
      Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    Welcome to the forum!
You'll need to capture with the anamorphic checkbox turned on... (however this can be turned on after capture too) then edit in an anamorphic sequence setting.
If you shot 24p then capture at 29:97 anamorphic. if you shot 24p advanced, then you have the option of removing the pulldown pattern when you capture, and also need to choose the anamorphic preset.
In the case of shooting 24p non advanced, you need to remove the pulldown in Cinema Tools after you capture at 29.97. However you don't have to really do this at all unless you print back to 24fps film.

  • Anamorphic capture preset

I have just started with FCP5.1.4. My goal was to transfer over 60 tapes of 8mm footage to digital. I bought a canon elura 100 and recorded the analog video to mini dv tapes. I then began capturing the footage using FCP. Over several months I worked away but also shot footage using the Canon. I shot this footage in widescreen. I selected preset info in FCP (easy setup) as "DV NTSC" using firewire which I thought was appropriate. However I must have changed it somewhere in the middle of my efforts to "DV-NTSC Anamorphic" maybe because I was capturing the widescreen footage (I honestly don't remember) My question is now that I am starting to create sequences I should be using the right settings and I do not know which captured media had the anamorphic settings for capture. Does this matter and is there a way to tell how the media files were captured? Any advice would be appreciated and thanks.

There will be a check in the anamorphic column of the browser for each clip to see what's set to be what... you can add this check to footage that is anamorphic but was captured 4:3...

  • Capture and Export of Mono Audio in FCP HD

I have just upgraded to FCP HD from FCP 3. My problem is all of my audio needs to be Mono only. In v3 this was simple I just chose Mono from the capture settings and Mono for Export.
On FCP HD I can't find any way to capture and export as Mono. When I record Voice Over in FCP all I get is the right channel and even when I set it to pan centre it still only comes out the right speaker after export.
If I've got to manually duplicate tracks everytime it will take me forever.
Anybody know a simple way to capture and export Mono only (the same for both Ch 1 + 2)
    G4 DP 1.25   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

This might seem the long way 'round but it may save a ton of time in the end.
Do your FCP mix in stereo as Colin suggests, then take the final audio track into STP or Peak and do a "mix to mono" and then save a new AIFF file with the resulting mono clip.
Then bring that back into FCP on a new audio track, line it up with the stereo, then either disable or delete the stereo tracks. This will give you a true mono audio track.
But where are you going with this content that will handle mono audio? DVDs require a stereo AC3 files. Are you sure you really need a mono sound track?

  • I can capture with iMovie 6, but not with FCP 6.0 ('no data from device')

I didn't have any problem with FCP 5, but am getting nowhere with FCP 6 using the same settings (I think). FCP seems to see the camcorder, but can't control it and, even if I manually start the camera, reports 'no data from device' when I do a 'Capture Now'. Device control isn't critical, but I'd sure like to find out why it doesn't see the data stream from the camera (Sony HDR-HC7 / FW400). I must be missing a setting some place, but sure can't find it. On the other hand, I have full device control and zero dropout capture with iMovie (exact same hardware configuration). Any ideas?

i tried to capture on both my new imac and my mbpro, no way.
but now i'm sure there is something wrong with the sony handycam, i tried to import with my old final cut studio, and it's not possible, also. fc pro says: waiting for timecode.
so i'm confused now. does the sony dcr-trv not send a timecode? maybe, and this will explain the troubles. but on the other hand i imported successfully some footage with exact this device.
maybe i used the canopus then to correct the timebase, i can't remember how i did it. but this would mean i have to accept loss of quality, since i have to connect the sony with s-vhs with the canopus and convert it.
right now i'm importing a tape with imovie and will have a look how the result is, but as far as i remember, the audio has to be re-rendered when importing in fcpx…
My finger is pointing to a Timecode issue.
Is timecode enabled in the camera?
Is it continuous on the tape?

  • Naming files when capturing as a non-controllable device in FCP Express

Hey, we've got an iMac here capturing a live feed into Final Cut Express 4.0, coming in as a non-controllable device.. it all works fine however I cant seem to name the files, they all capture as 'Untitled'.. any ideas on how I can name the files? At the moment the usual text areas where you can enter file names is grayed out, and I dont know why!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Here's what we can see in user manual, page 189:
    "Automatic Filenaming During Capture
If you want, you can deselect the checkboxes next to the logging fields in the
Capture window. In this case, the Name field remains empty, so Final Cut Express
names your media file for you. Final Cut Express automatically names media files and
their corresponding clips using the following convention: Untitled, Untitled1,
    Untitled2, and so on."
So may be you have to select some checkboxes to get a custom name instead of untitled.
You can always rename clip in Browser.

  • Capturing audio from telephone for use in FCP

My requirement is quite specific, and so far none of previous posts seem to answer my question. So...
I'm looking to capture audio from my telephone for use in FCP. It won't be a telephone conversation, but a voice text. In other words, an SMS sent to a landline. The audio is saved as a voice message on the answer machine. My phone / answer machine is fairly basic - it has a speaker and the only ports it has is for power and the telephone line itself. I have tried a very basic method of playing the message on speaker and capturing it on a mini DV - but that results in too much audio edit to get it to sound acceptable. My Mac is a G5 and I have the full FC studio, but just not sure of best way to get audio onto the Mac without losing too much of the sound quality.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks all...

  • Capturing Hi8 A/V through Digital8 Camcorder - FCP preset question

After putting this off for years (so long that I forgot what to do) I am finally getting around to loading the old family library of Hi8 video footage shot in the 80's and 90's with a Canon A1 through a Sony DCR-TRV320 to do the analog to video conversion enroute to the Mac through FCP 6. After trial and error I have fumbled my way through the appropriate camcorder settings (Analog Video Out conversion to Digital Video Out, Audio bit rate changed from 12 bit to 16 bit) to eliminate the audio sampling rate mismatch error I was getting in FCP after Capture Now imports.
My latest test loaded OK with no errors. I am still left wondering if I should change the audio frequency preset in FCP. I can't find authoritative info on what audio frequency the original Hi8 material was recorded in. Changing the bit rate from 12 to 16 on the Sony camcorder fixed the FCP mismatch error I was getting, but I wonder if I am screwing with the sound by leaving the FCP preset at 48 kHz. If the Hi8 material was recorded at a lower frequency, will the audio be OK if FCP is importing it at 48 kHz? It sounds OK but I haven't done a headphone test. Just wondering if I have to create a special preset at a lower frequency or just leave it alone, now that I solved the bit rate problem.
    Thanks!

Thank you all for the expert advice. I just found the manual for the Sony camcorder used for the analog to digital conversion and it lists two modes for its PCM system 1) 12 bits/32 kHz, 2) 16 bits/48 kHz. If I understand you correctly, it doesn't matter how the audio was laid down by the Canon A1 analog, since the Sony is converting it to 16/48 (or 12/32 which was my problem earlier, before toggling the Sony menu setting). Is that right?

  • Capture settings for Sony HDR-FX1 in FCP 5.0.4

I just got a new sony HDV camera (HDR-FX1). I shot some footage around the office and want to bring it into FCP to practice edits. I have only used DV in the past so what settings do i use for capture and project. There are several presets and i am not sure which to use. PLus i am not sure if there is something on the camera i need to set. The footage looks pulled vertically and doesn't look like it does on the lcd panel on camera. I am sure this is because of a setting i am not using correctly. Anyone have suggestions for me?

    Zach,
First choose the sequence quality you want to work with. If you want to edit 1080 then use those presets...but be advised, that the preview on an external monitor will only be correct if it is 1080 all the way. (Disregard if you are not using an external monitor).
If you are ulitmately going to combine footage or want standard 4:3 output...then you may want to set the camera to convert the footage as it is being captured. The increased resolution & 3 chip sensor will still give you better looking DV footage than a consumer DV.
I experimented with capturing between capturing HDV, then using compressor to convert to DV .... and having the camera real-time convert HDV footage to DV. Capturing and letting compressor convert is better...but took almost 3 hours for a 50 minutes of footage. And I have a G5 Dual 2.7. Given that the camera conversion was still good and it was real-time!!!! you may want to comprimise.
Also, keep in mind you get to the HDV capture via file...not through the normal LOG & CAPUTRE.
I'm not in front of either the camera or FCP or I would give you exact detail. I Hope that helps some...post back if you still have trouble and I'll try to answer when I'm back in the office.

  • What is best screen capture for video to be edited in FCP?

    Hello:
I need to add some video from a client's website to include in a video being edited in ye olde FCP 7.
The rest of the video is ProRes 422.
Is there a screen capture software package that can capture in a compatible format and be high resolution enough?
I have looked at ScreenFlow and Camtasia for Mac but they don't have much info on their sites about video specs.
Client wants to capture a webcast and show the video in context of the website it plays on.
I could just shoot the screen with my HD camera but I'm hoping there is something better out there.
Oh - and yes... I have thought of cheating it.... superimposing the original video into a screen grab of the website but the client doesn't have the original video.
    Thanks for any info.

I've been using Camtasia recently and there's a 30 day trial

And you can record the entire screen or choose just a smaller area.  Great for capturing video on a website

  • Can you transfer media captured in Final Cut Studio to a FCP 4.1 project

    Hi
I batch captured some media on my G4 Powerbook with the FC Studio software and I want to add it to a FCP 4.1 project on my G5 dual 1.8 and when I transfer the files from the Powerbook to the G5 and try to import to the 4.1 project, I get a file corrupted message. Does that mean that Final Cut Studio is not backward compatible. If so . . any suggestions on a work around?
    thanks

Just to clarify, you are trying to import the Quicktime movies that you captured using Final Cut Studio or are you trying to open a FCStudio project in FC 4.1?
If it is the former, ensure that you have captured your QT movies correctly (DV, 24P, HD, what format are you capturing). FCP 4.1 should read the captured clips in just fine.
If it is the latter (opening FCStudio projects in 4.1) you can export the project as an XML file and import that XML file into 4.1 and the project is essentially rebuilt. You may/will have to re-render and some transitions might break, but your timeline should be pretty much in tact.
Good luck and I hope this helps.
