Anamorphic project

I have a 16:9 Final Cut Pro project that after editing in Motion it now looks squished, like a 4:3. What is happening? How do I fix it?

  • Anamorphic project playing as 4:3 in iDVD

    Hi,
I'm not sure if the solution is on the FCE side or iDVD.
I created an anamorphic project (from dv footage) in FCE and exported as QT (not using QT conversion). When I click on the resulting file it plays beautifully in 16:9 format in the QT player. Then I created a 16:9 project in iDVD and pulled my movie into it. When I preview the project my movie is squished into 4:3.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • Anamorphic project... again...

    hi
i have posted a question concerning anamorphic projects some time ago and still havent solved the problem.
    here is a summary:
i have to deliver a project shot on DV pal 3X4 as a 16X9 DVD.
i have edited it down as 5X4 sequence and nested it as advised on a 16X9 anamorphic sequence. the problem is that i have some black borders on the right and left of the frame, inside the frame. do i need to enlarge the frame so the borders will fall outside the frame ? whats the best way to do it? wouldnt zooming in take the quality down ? is there a way to avoid losing quality ?
any help will be much appriciated...
    here are the full details:
    FCP 4.5, DV PAL 5X4 576X720

how do i enlarge it ? is it enough to streach it using the wireframes ? how much do i need to streach it ? what if i wont export it as 16X9 but as normal 4X3 and the client would watch it on a 16X9 monitor ? what would happen then ? would it just be cropped equally from top and bottom ? if thats the case i am not sure the quality loss of enlarging it so much is worth it. the quality loss is so bad, i lose all the extra points of using a large camera...

  • PAL anamorphic projects seem to be coming out at export at 4:3

I have Final Cut Studio 1 with all the latest updates. I am doing more video projects these days and I've noticed that upon export things seem to be going a bit wrong. Both straight to quicktime and using compressor to export a 16:9 project and out comes a 4:3 the other end. Even in the compressor preview screen. Frame size says 720 x 576 but it's not coming out widescreen. I've done 2 projects previously that worked fine, but the latest one just baffles me.
It's a trailer completely created in Motion 2. In the motion preview screen, everything looks fine. Export it (keeping the project settings) and boom 4:3. Drop it into final cut and the same. In a project with shot video footage previewing fine in 16:9 the motion file comes out as a squashed up 4:3?
Has anyone else had this problem, did a crawl through the forum, and there were a few things similar but no real answers. It's like the Final CUt to motion 3 problem but around the other way....any ideas where I'm going wrong?

pal anamorphic is a setting used when you plan to dispaly your project on a wide screen-capable tv (because it relaly is wide screen or has the ability to change aspect ratios) so it is actually a 4:3 pal format, than when you watch on your tv you squish by telling your tv to change its aspect ratio. It is actually poor man's wide screen, as you are only using 4:3 equipment and it is not as heavy pixel wise as it is not actually filling the full wide screen resolution but cheating. To make real wide screen, that exports as wide screen without the distortion and teh necessity to squish it back down, use a non anamorphic format to begin with, or do what others have said: change the resolution of your exported file by shift dragging the corner of the quick time player window, or putting in the correct resolution in pixels.....

  • Can I change a Anamorphic project to 4X3?

Is it possible to change a Anamorphic 16 X 9 project to 4 X 3 in Motion, without rebuilding it?

I've used the Snapshot option in Rigging to do this.  You can build a project in 16x9 and then add a 4x3 snapshot for SD.  You will have to make some adjustments to compensate for framing diferences, but you won't have to rebuild everything in a seperate project to support 2 different aspect ratios.

  • Pal Anamorphic project - importing stills

    Hi,
I'm working on a project in FCP which was shot on PAL 16:9 and imported in PAL anamorphic. I have a still that I want to use that is 1024 x 576. I have cut out a map in this still and created an alpha layer. When I bring it into FCP it seems to have 2 sets of letterbox.
Is there something I need to be doing in photoshop to avoid this? Thanks for your help.
    Margie

No sure what you mean by double letterbox.
It seems to me that your timeline settings are not anamorphic.
(although you captured in anamorphic). Make sure that you're timeline is anamorphic: Sequence Settings > check the anamorphic box.
Try to drag your stil on it again.
Doesn't work? Check whether the anamorphic-column in the browser is on or off.
Try the right setting for you.
Problem must be somewhere in there.

  • Anamorphic project for use in iDVD

I created an anamorphic SD video in FC Pro and want to export it for iDVD for a quick check.
    Do I export it as QuickTime Movie 720 x 405 px or 1024 x 576 px ?
Or is there any other way to get the 16:9 ratio in iDVD?

  • Text squeezing to wrong aspect ratio in PAL D1 Anamorphic project

For some reason when I have been typing text into a PAL D1 Ana'phic project the text looks squashed, when it should look normal.
Rather annoyingly it is my client who has noticed this after I have spent 2-3 days on a whole load of text graphics (18 projects)
Curiuously, I have just started a new project and the text behaves correctly.
Does anyone know why the problem may be occurring? The only other elements in the projects are red boxes created using the Motion Rectangle tool.
My only quick workaround is to go back into all the projects and change the 'x' scale of the text.
    Any advice mucho appreciated.

This may be slightly off subject, but I almost always have to go to the distort aspect ratio (in FCP) and correct it for Motion 3 elements, whether they are files or renders. It is true of various project settings and both video and stills, both HD and DV. Usuallly there is a 33% distoriton and I simply adjust to 0%, render the timeline and all is well. I've seen this referred to a few times - is it a bug?

  • Editing a HDV project with anamorphic DV footage setup issue

I’m editing a HDV show and my source footage was down converted HDV to 720x480 DV anamorphic. I’ve selected the anamorphic under format for all my source clips. In the viewer window everything correctly looks 16x9. In my canvas window my footage looks like 16x9, but when I select the title safe grid in the canvas window the title safe grid doesn’t line up like it does on the footage in my viewer window. It’s as though in my canvas window I’m looking at letterbox footage in a 4x3 screen and my title safe grid looks like it’s a 4x3 title safe grid.
My question is there a 16x9 title safe grid for anamorphic footage? Or do I have my sequence settings incorrect?
    My settings are:
Source footage is 1440x1080i HDV down converted and captured at 720x480 DV. Pixel Aspect-NTSC – CCR 601. Anamorphic selected.
    Sequence Settings are:
    720x480 NTSC DV (3:2)
Pixel Aspect NTSC –CCIR 601/DV 720x480
    Field Dominance: Lower
    29.97
    Compressor: DV/DVC Pro – NTSC
    I’m running FCP 5.0
I would appreciate your input. Thanks!

If you are creating an anamorphic project, and your
footage is anamorphic, then your sequence setting
must also be anamorphic unless you want it
    letterboxed in a 4x3 frame.
Check your Canvas view settings: "fit to window" and
    "show as square pixels".
That sounds correct but when I select anamorphic under "item properties" for the sequence it streches out the images as if I were double doing the anamorhic. It stretches sides again a second time.
I just tired this... I grabbed a clip and turned off the anamorhic on the source clip. I created a new sequence and turned on anamorphic on the sequence. That stretched out the footage in the canvas and the title safe grid looks correct. That's great. But wondering, is that the way FCP works, that you have to watch the source side distorted when editing?
And that's ok if there's not an option. And if so, is there a way of batch selecting all my source clips and turning off anamorphic?
    Thanks!

  • Is there any way to export 2.35 Anamorphic source to a 16x9 letterboxed frame WITH timecode or text overlays?

I have been trying to export temp cuts of an anamorphic project (2.35:1) in a letterboxed 16:9 frame with timecode and text overlays and other Additional Video Effects. Converting the 2.35 to 16x9 has been a breeze with the Preserve Aspect Ratio option in Cropping & Padding . The problem is that the black bars that that puts in the 16:9 frame appear OVER any of the Additional Video Effects, thus covering them up.
E.g. if I select a Text Overlay and place it in the Center, I can see it just fine. But if I want it Upper Left, Title Safe, it is covered by the black space of the Letterboxing. So the Additional Video Effects are getting added, they are just getting covered by the letterboxing. You can even see the very edge of the text in the Title Safe position, peeking out from behind the letterboxing, which is, of course, frustrating .
Thus far it's been a two-step process: letterbox the anamorphic source, then add TC and other video effects in a second job.
So - is there any way to do this in ONE step? It would really help my anamorphic workflow.
    (apologies for the lengthy question.)
    [I'm using FCPX 10.1.3 & Compressor 4.1.3, in OSX 10.9.5 on Retina MBP, Late 2013, w/  NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB]

    Thanks for the reply Russ.
Yes, I've considered adding titles and/or generators in the FCPX storyline, but this creates a need to render the entire timeline. As I'm juggling library locations and hard drive spaces I just didn't want to add a new render that will occupy a lot of space. It's also a bit of visual clultter for me, so my goal is to find the best workflow for adding this stuff on or after export.

  • Wierd HDV to SD DVD anamorphic problem

I've read many articles on this workflow, but I haven't seen anyone with my particular problem yet.
I have an HDV 108060i FCP project. Footage captured from a Canon HV30 and some graphics done in Motion. The editing process went great. I output my final HD project back to my camera. Looks fantastic.
Now I want to make a SD DVD.
I export a non self contained ref movie from the FCP timeline. When I look at this movie, it's 1920x1080. Not anamorphic... not 1440x1080. When I view this movie, a circle is a circle. When I get movie info, it says it's a 1440x1080, but in movie properties, the size says 1920x1080.
But I continue. I drop this file into Compressor, and use the default DVD MPEG best quality settings. Compressor makes a 16x9 file thats 720x404. What I believe I want and need is a 720x480 movie that's squeezed. Otherwise I'm losing resolution.
Funny thing is, when I export a still frame TGA from the same timeline, it's squeezed! 1440 x 1080.
Then I go back to an older SD project, where I've produced DVDs successfully in the past. When I export from a DV anamorphic project, all is right. The exported movie is squeezed, the MPEG 2 from Compressor is squeezed and it plays great on both widescreen and 4:3 TVs after authoring in DVDSP.
Can anyone help? Gotta make a SD DVD by day's end tomorrow!
    Thanks
    Brian

If you're opening an anamorphic NTSC-sized .m2v file in QuickTime Player, it will be displayed as 720x404 because the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component uses square pixels for display. When imported into DVDSP, the file should be read as 720x480.
As for exported stills being 1440x1080, that is also normal behavior. FCP uses the frame size, in your case 1440x1080, and not the display size (1920x1080).
But you mention that some of this behavior is different than what you've seen with past DV Anamorphic material. How so? What did those .m2v files get displayed as in QT Player?

  • Anamorphic sequence with letterboxes

    Hi
I have a sequence that was shot on an xl2 in 16:9, it was digitized in a 4:3 project and edited. I have a client who only has widescreen tv's. I made the sequence 16:9 anamorphic in my sequence settings. It still has letter boxes on it, I need to remove the letter boxes. I tried removing attributes basic motion and distortion which has been recommended a lot here. Those attributes aren't an option, the only options for video are filter and speed. I tried dumping it to tape and digitizing it into a 16:9 anamorphic project but it only logs and captures in the 4:3 ratio with letterboxes. What should I do.

To start with you shouldn't capture and edit in 4:3 if your material is anamorphic. Now you're trying to resurrect the situation that you've quite badly messed up by not capturing and editing your material properly. At this stage it's kind of hard to tell what to do, without knowing what your program actually looks like and now the material is designated. Has the material been set to anamorphic? You probably need to do that first for ALL your material. You can do that in the browser columns for multiple items. It's more difficult for items that have been edited into sequences. Does the material at this stage look correct in the 4:3 sequence, or does it have letterboxing, or does it look distorted? You can set the anamorphic flag for this material for each item, but them you have to copy and paste the content into a new 16:9 sequence, and then you'll have to remove the distortion created by having edited it into a 4:3 sequence in the first place.

  • Still images into a project

    Hello.
I am working on an SD NTSC-Anamorphic project and want to bring some still images into the project. The images were shot with a Canon 350D (Rebel XT) in Raw format and currently are in TIFF format as converted by Aperture. When I import the images I am finding a noticable degredation in quality when comparing the images in "Preview" to the Viewer to the Canvas. Once the images are in the timeline and I look at them on the canvas they look alot fuzzier.
Should I be using a different file format? Is there a setting I've overlooked somewhere?
Thanks for any and all suggestions...

    Hi,
I have read the comments above and all are valid but they do not look to me to answer your core question.
I had been asking the same question on forums for a long time and had similar responses and finally fixed the issue by purchasing a Photoshop book called WOW.
One of the earlier comments really hits the nail on the head but does not seem to offer the fix (I'm not trying to be critical here because all information does help).
First of all you need to reduce the size of the file for video - this is, in my experience best done in Photoshop not FCP (Photoshop WOW book comes with DVD and automatic actions to do this).
I call this the 'resize' step and put all my photos through this stage first (it does help to have an action for landscape and one for portrait to ensure that they are kept separate for the next step).
Then you need to 'rescale' the image to the size of your project in FCP (I assume that you are using widescreen as I do). To do this you need to create a blank document in widescreen format and then drop or drag your resized photo into the widescreen format and it will take on the same format as the blank widescreen document. Get rid of any layers and save the document in TIFF or JPEG it is up to you - you can keep the layers if you want to but you need to be aware of the issues of layers being imported into FCP.
I felt like I had found my fountain of youth when I sorted this out properly (the stress was definitely make me age).
Some comments suggest that the latest FCP does a better job of compressing the photos than the older versions but I wouldn't know as I use FCP 4.5HD and this may be so. However, it is commonly accepted, I believe, that formating the photo in photoshop is the better option.
It fixed all my headaches at least because I wanted the flexibility of FCP with photos just as you do.
Good luck and no intention to dislocate any noses out there, the willingness of people helping to provide assistance out there is fantastic.
