Animated GIF broken on iPad, iPhone

[This is a cross-post with the iPhone forum:  https://discussions.apple.com/message/17908717#17908717 ]
I develop a web site and I use animated GIFs. They used to work fine on both iPhone and iPad, but now they're broken. The animation plays but one of the frames flashes with the center of the image somewhat transparent so the background color shows through. This is under iOS 5.1. Is this a known bug or limitation and is there a fix?

Thanks!  You'll get an email when the bug is ready to verify in a public build (either a developer seed if you have access, or a GM build), but I can't comment on when that might be.  You may add additional comments to the bug at any time by logging back into <https://bugreport.apple.com/>.
Since this apparently doesn't occur on every animated GIF image, the only suggestion for a workaround that I have is to try a different program (on your Mac or PC) to generate the GIF, or use a different program to post-process the GIF to see if that fixes the issue.

  • I would like to know if there is any way to display an animated gif on an ipad

I would like to know, is there any way or app that allows you to display an animated gif on an iphone or ipad ? for example, just like when you go into your camera roll and it displays a picture, be able to display a moving picture ( animated gif)

You can use GifViewer Pro https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gifviewer-pro-animated-gif/id629527680?mt=8

  • Animated gif picture support for iphone 4s or iphoto app

i love it to use animated gif pictures in the imessage chat, but it is still not possible to view these pictures in the camera roll or in iphoto.
would bw great if apple would make it work to play gif pictures in original size.
ether in iphoto or in the iphone camera roll
editing gif in iphoto would be freakin awesome

It's not likely that Apple will add gif animation support into iPhoto, not even the desktop application supports it.
As far as viewing animated gifs saved in your camera roll, there has been a work around to select the gif and share it using the "Email Photo" option. The gif will play while in the email compose box and when you're done viewing it you can simply press cancel to quit the compose email mode.
Search the app store there are lots of apps that allow you create animated gifs and you may even find some that will let you view them more easily.

  • Animated gifs -- broken feature; locked topic

    Hey -- what gives?
Why is the main discussion in this forum of Mail's baffling inability to send an animated gif file been locked, with no further replies allowed?
Is Apple so embarrassed at the absurdity of this simple feature being broken for so long that it can't bear to see any further discussion of the matter?
I wanted to post that not even the "append selected file" workaround suggested within that thread worked on my machine (with the current 10.4.7 OS), and ask if any other users had any other suggestions. I also wanted to join the chorus of users who are saying: yes, this broken feature is a small thing -- which is precisely why Apple should have fixed it long ago.
Meantime -- any user suggestions for what should be a simple, straightforward procedure?

That thread certainly drifted off topic: it was not about sending animated GIF's in the first place but about receiving them in viewable form in Mail. The answer effectively was given: the feature apparently doesn't work for anyone, so it is currently broken. The remainder of the pots went off in several directions: how to send one, why would Apple break or not repair the view feature, when would they fix it, even some conjecture about philosophical reasons for & against having the feature at all.
Some of these things are off limits for Apple Discussions because the terms of use prohibit them, others are threadjacks. As the moderator suggested, start a new post for "your issue" -- which still has to follow the terms, including not speculating on Apple policy or when a feature will be added/restored to its products.
You topic & the subjects that you wanted to address in the locked one are only partially admissible under these terms. I suggest you steer clear of policy issues here & use there forums to determine if an issue is known or if a fix exists. Feature requests should instead be directed to Apple Feedback, conjecture to web sites & forums that allow or encourage that.
For the technical aspects of your issue, it would help if you would outline what you have tried & how you have tested it.

  • Why does the iPhone convert animated .GIF images?

I saved a bunch of animated .GIF files on my iPhone.
When I imported them onto my computer, they were all single framed .JPG files.
Why does the iPhone convert the images, and is there any way to prevent this?
    Thanks!

I am trying to design a simple email blast with an animated gif which i have been doing so for 5 years. today, i designed a new email blast for my client and it works perfectly on all my email accounts including mac mail and thunderbird. however, when i view the same email on my ipad3 i find the art work is tiling both on the x and y axis and the animation no longer works. the html form  i used for this is:

    Hi Tom
The email language is in English, and it is the only email source that seems to suffer from this issue.  Its distributed weekly but I only noticed the problem a few months back - prior to that it was fine.
Ordinarily I wouldn't be too hung up about it as I can always read on another device or even log into my gmail from the safari browser (where it renders perfectly) - but given it displays without issue on the ipad, I was just curious to see if there was some config issue on the phone.
Have attached a screenshot to see if it helps.  You'll see that the mail begins out normally in English and then deteriorates after a few sentences, possibly initially starting with the first use of the € Euro symbol.

  • Animated gifs in keynote for iPad

I realized, in Excel 2011 (Mac) a ppt with links "simple" and I want to incorporate animated GIFs (or videos).
Everything works smoothly on Power Point, however, upon transfer of the Ipad and opening files  with Keynote my animated gifs are no longer... animated!
Even if I try to incorporate these gifs directly on the iPad does not work better.
You know how I can fix my problem?
If the gifs can not be borne any video format to use when it is necessary that during the transition from 2011 to ppt Keynote everything works?
    In advance thank you
    Yo.

Great solution James. As a former university level instructor, it must mean that you're old and out of touch. Gifs are an amazing new form of communication if used correctly. I too am searching for a solution for the same problem as ytomasz.
An"amazing new form of communication"? SERIOUSLY? Animated gifs are as old as the hills and came into being as a stop gap prior to other means of providing web based animation and video became practical. They are strictly amateur hour and are quite unprofessional. Perhaps you could do with a little communication training.

  • Save for web animated gifs (ipad vs desktop)

I am exporting animated gifs out of photoshop and wondering why there is a discrepancy in the display speed of the animated gifs when viewing on an ipad compared to on the desktop.
Specifically the ipad displays the gif quite a bit slower than in the desktop...
so something that views on the desktop in normal speed is slower than desired on the ipad and something at the desired speed on the ipad is super fast on the desktop...

was related to the loading times...gifs at every other results in a faster play speed...

  • Does the iPhone play animated GIFs?

    Hi,
Does the iPhone play animated GIFs? Sorry for asking such a basic question but I can't seem to find the answer on the web or within this forum.
Also how do you implement it into your code? Do you need to use a UIWebView or can you just declare it like a regular png or jpg (e.g. UIImage *image = [[UIImage imageNamed:@"photo.gif"])
    Thanks for any help.

you can play gif in webView ,just the same way you load a jpeg or png..
    NSString *path = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"santa" ofType:@"gif"];
    NSURL *url = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:path isDirectory:NO];

As far as I know there is no difference, we use the same charger for iphone, ipad, ipod, etc.. and no problem.

There is a statement from Apple that confirms this : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4327

  • Why are animated GIFs still broken?

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1229922 <-- this
'nuff said, this has been a problem ever since Preview lost its ability to animate GIFs. It may be a WebKit problem (i.e. yeah, Apple, just go ahead and let yourself off the hook...right), but regardless, how come it has not been addressed sooner? Safari chokes after about 4 frames of animation; if the GIF loops, it starts over fresh, but it chokes again.
I am using 10.5.8, but I am aware this is still a problem for all 10.6 OSes and iOSes. I don't know about Safari for Windows; not relevant at the moment.
Why is this still a problem after three-and-a-half years of Safari development have passed?

Well, here are the issues I have run into.
    1) Gifs load half way and then animate on the base but not on the top.
    2) Gifs animate waaaaaaay too fast.
I have found no solution for the 1st issue, and it does not always occur.
As for the second one it has to do with browsers all reading the "0 delay" setting of the animation at uniquee speeds. Most round it to 10/100th of a sec, while Safari loads it at 3/100th resulting in a faster images, but a non-standard speed. Which ***** since I am running animations that follow using a set time out only to have safari throw everything off. I think one other browser runs at something like 6/100ths so Safari is not the only one. Faster could be nice if they all got on the same page, but as they are it is pointless. Pretty much meaning if you want an animated gif you have to avoid the "0 delay setting at all costs, and pretty much anything under 1/10th because it will not display the same in many browsers. It could be this fast speed in Safari that is causing the loading and instability issues with sime.

  • Pros & Cons of animated Gifs

    Hi all,
Im trying to include an animated banner of just images, rather than a flash/XML banner - to make it SEO and iphone/ipad friendly.
Is there a reason why no one does this as an animated gif anymore? Does it greatly increase file size/download time?
Thought I would ask before embarking on a huge frame by frame design.......
    Thanks

File size depends on your image dimensions and how many layers are in your project file.   I have nothing against animated gifs if they are used appropriately.  But GIFs are limited to just 256 colors whereas JPGs and PNGs support full-color (16 million).
You can achieve some nice animation effects on JPGs or PNGs with jQuery.  Unlike Flash, jQuery is supported by iDevices.

  • An animated gif that plays on all devices

    Hello again on gifs...
I am in PS CS4 on XP.
I created an animated gif. I was wondering if there was some way to make it work on all devices. Phones, MP3 players, computers (both mac & pc)...etc..
It looks great on my computer at work and at home, but not on my iPod. It does not play or show on my iPod. My boss checked on her computer said you have to click on the image for it to play (but I don't have to do that). It did not work on her BlackBerry either.
Just wondering if there is someway out there that the gif can work on all devices because it will be emailed out to a few people.
I see there is a device central within the program, but not sure about that. There seems to be a lot of types there, but I don't see BlackBerry? I'll check again. In the meantime, I thought I'd write this up to see if there was an answer.
    Thank you.

It will not on my iPod....
Which one? Nano never has displayed GIFs, only JPEGs. Touch will display GIFs only in Safari and Mail and whtever custom apps you may have that use GIFs. That would be very much the same on iPad and iPhone, though those also can display PNGs outside of the browser. Similarly, Android devices can display JPEG, PNG and SVG natively, but GIFs are disabled/ forbidden on most of them and may only dispaly in the browser app. Dunno much about Symbian/ Meego/ Blackberry, but I would think that pretty much the same rules apply - said stuff being disabled to conserve battery power, for security reasons or not even dynamically loaded because of ad blocking...
