Animated gifs play much too slowly in Safari

As far as I can tell, this is constant across all WebKit browsers. Basically take any animated gif (), and open it side by side in Safari and some other browser like Firefox or Opera, and it will always play much more smoothly in the other browser.
I can't seem to find anything about this on google right now, and it's driving me nuts. Anyone know anything?
Also how do I make this forum not show my real name...

  • Animated gif plays only once

I am using Captivate 5.5 on a Windows machine. I inserted an animated gif into my Captivate, using insert > animation...  Then, I inserted a button. When I pressed F4 to preview the animation, it played only once. I put a check mark on the loop on the timing of the properties of the animation. Still, it played only once. It stopped when the play head stoped moving. I cannot make the animated gif play continuously. Does anybody know how to make the animated gif play continuously?
    thaks.

    You can try this:
Stick this in the header area of your code
    <script type="text/javascript"> function showBuyLink() {
    document.getElementById("buylink").style.visibility = "visible";
    } // adjust this as needed, 1 sec = 1000
    setTimeout("showBuyLink()", 5000);
    </script>
Stick this around your buy link code.
    <div id="buylink" style="visibility: hidden"> <!-- put all your add to cart buy links and images inside this hidden div --> <p style="text-align:center; font-size:26px;"> <a href="http://mybuylink">Add to Cart or Buy Link</a> </p> </div>
Yopu can rename "buylink", but you have to make sure you rename all instances or it will kill the script.
If you're not comfortable incorporating that, unfortunately, the other option would be to create a Flash animation and put a button in the last frame.
That would be just as difficult (if not worse) as writing (or tweaking) a javascript to delay the hotspot, and even worse because it would be invisible to phone users. Additionally, people who disable javascript would never see the link if you did add the script.
There isn't any way to do this with HTML or CSS, and you now know the flaws with the methods that will work.

  • Animated gif looping doesn't work in safari

I made an animated gif through the animation option in Photoshop (used to use Image Ready, but now use photoshop/animation view).  Anyway, it is a super simple gif with eight frames set to loop twice.  When saved and then put into an HTML page, it loops twice on a PC using IE, and on a Mac, it plays correctly using Firefox, but in Safari it only plays once.  As an experiment, I set it to play once and it "behaves" correctly on all browsers. Similarly, if I set it to  play "forever" -- it behaves as expected on all browsers. BUT, any choice of number of loops cause inconsistency.  In Safari, it always plays one less time than it was "programmed" to play.  Does anybody have any advice on this?
    Thanks.

I believe there is a way to have two versions of say the gif run the main one and one with three lops and tell you server not to load the first one if it detects safari but to load the second one with the right argument.
Or try the new Safari 4 just released today.

  • Why doesn't animated GIF play?

I have made 2 animated Gifs one plays fine the other doesn't. When I preview in Safari all that shows is the full image and nothing happens.
It runs fine in the timeline but in save-for-web the play buttons are greyed out and all I see is the full composite image. 3 of the layers have drop shadows but I don't think that is the reason. Any ideas?

Yes GIF is selected. I have now found that it works converting it to frames. But not sure why the other one works not converting to frames. Should they always be converted to frames?

  • Unable to create animated gifs, file size too large???

    Hello,
I'm trying to create an animated gif and every time I save for web, select gif, and click on animate I receive an error stating that my file size is too big and I should remove layers. My animated gif is composed of 8 layers of jpegs, each originally about 1 MB. I've tried to reduce the image size by adjusting the ppi and also reducing the amount of layers to just 2 and I still get the same error.
Is there a way I can fix this so I can produce animated gifs, and is there a way you can know if it will work on not, before you try and save it?
Also, when I save the image I only have 1 layer visible, does that matter at all?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Something is very wrong here. The point behind using GIFs is that they are small and OK to put on a Web site.
First thing: forget all about PPI - this has absolutely no relevance to Web/screen images; it is only used for printing. You need to think about the pixel size.
So, how big in pixels are your starting images?
How big do you want the resulting GIF to be? Again, you have to decide in pixels, as the viewing size will depend upon screen resolution of the person looking at it. You can use a notional PPI of 70-100 to guess how big it will be in inches, but that's all it is - a guess.
Is this getting you going in the right direction?
I cannot resist commenting that I hate almost all animated GIFs as they reduce Web site usability so much.

  • Animated Gif's Playing too slow

Lately since I installed leopard animated gif's are showing up on safari too slow and its not on one site its everywhere! And I need to see the real speed of what the gif is or else I won't know if its wrong or not. So what do I do?

Same problem here, very frustrating. The same thing also happens on my MacBook with Tiger. The longer the animated GIF is, the more it slows down. Here's a good example, fine in Firefox but not Safari: http://content.ytmnd.com/content/6/a/0/6a0e42120c9f9e24dfc3bfa353ccd114.gif
I submitted this as a Safari bug a while ago, I hope all of you will too.

  • Viewing animated GIFs in the Finder and Preview

I was wondering why my animated gif images do not play while I view them in the preview in the Finder or Preview. I know it plays when I view gifs in Explorer and was wondering why doesn't the Finder/Preview.
I would really like to be able to view the animated gifs without having to open either Safari or Fire Fox to view them.
    Thanks

    Welcome to Discussions.
Apparently Preview lost that functionality a few versions ago. And Quicklook also doesn't seem to do it. Someone said that Pathfinder plays them, http://www.cocoatech.com.
If you don't want to use a "big" program like Safari or Quicktime, then your best bet is to use a quick and easy image viewer like Xee http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/xee.html.
Set it as default application by selecting a gif file, press cmd-I. Choose Xee under Open with and click Change all.

  • Animated gifs not working

I have created several animated gifs (using photos on a continuous loop) in photoshop on my mac, but they aren't working when we upload the gifs to our website. I've been creating these short animations for ages and all of the old ones are still working online. However I'm not doing anything differently, and am being careful to create them properly. The animations also play properly when I drop them into any old web browser. It's only when we upload them to a website that they stop working and display only the first frame.
Since a) I haven't changed the way I make these animated gifs, b) they work when dropped into a web browser, and c) the previously created animations are working online, does anyone have any idea why these recently created ones aren't working? Is it likely to be a photoshop problem?
    Any ideas appreciated!

Can you share a sample web page?
Which browsers are you using to test the live web pages? Some browsers may have optionally disabled animated GIFs (although this would be unlikely if one GIF plays and another does not). ...and Safari has had a history of quirks with animated GIF play.

  • Animated gif in mail are not visible after upgrade to mavericks

    Hi,
I use a animated gif in my signature in mail. This gif was playing normally (like a animated gif) in mountain lion when I writes a new message. After upgrading to mavericks I can't see the animated gif playing. I just see the first frame. However when I send a mail to my iPad using iOS 7 the animated gif is playing normally.
    Thanx for every answer!

I'm having this issue as well — I can no longer send animated gifs in Mail with Mavericks (10.9.0). The image retains its full image size and remains a gif format, but does not play, just sits static. This also affects forwarding animated gifs — which play fine in the mail window — they are static in the compose window and are sent static.

  • Animated .gif header help!

I have been asked to create an animated header using a .gif because the client wants the animation viewable on iPhones.  How can I get a logo to "wipe" while using a transparent background?  I tried using a mask but you see the white box.  Is there anyway to create this effect using a transparent background?

Animated gifs are much easier to do in Fireworks. It's made for the format, more so than Photoshop is. PS only works with one frame at a time while Fireworks is desgined to work with the entire set.

  • Animated GIF Fix?

With the recent releases of KN 4.0.2, OS 10.5.2 and the Graphics update today, I was hoping that Keynote would better handle transparency in animated GIF images. I haven't seen any change but am wondering if anyone else has been able to get transparent GIF animations to work?
    Thanks,
    Chris

I'm having this same problem. Animated GIFs with transparency look fine in Safari or Preview, but have an opaque background in Keynote 4.0.1.
People have suggested using Flash, but Keynote doesn't allow importation SWF files that I can see.
And I can't figure out how to generate PNG-video, which a poster suggested in answer to an archived version of this same problem.
If anyone knows a workaround, I'm all ears!

  • Will there ever be a fix for Animated Gifs  OS 10.5.8

I realize this extremely stupid bug which has/had been around for many years was apparently fixed in 10.6, but that upgrade is simply not an option for me (as, 10.6 will not install on this machine.)
the problem is very well known (and many years old): loading a simple animated gif, even very small files, causes Safari to beachball while the gif is downloading (this can take over a minute even for a file under 250k). it should be almost instant (like it is in Firefox)
this was never a problem using older OS and older versions of Safari (even very large animated gifs loaded very quickly and did not affect system performance.)
this problem does not exist (and never did exist) in Firefox. i can load animated gif as expected, and very quickly under firefox.
why did apple refuse to fix this? why do they continue to refuse? it worked fine, and then apple broke it. and it seems like they are leaving it broken on purpose.

    HI,
Empty the Safari Cache from the Safari Menu Bar more often.
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.

  • Flash CS4: My animated gif isn't playing right in flash

Thank you so much for your help.
I made an animated gif in Photoshop CS4 and opened it in Flash CS4, but for some reason the gif won't play without interruption. I opened and played it without a problem several times in Internet Explorer and Safari, but when I open it in Flash or Captivate it won't play so smoothely. It goes blank for a few seconds, then reappears, then goes blank and only shows parts of the graphic - as if it's reloading or something. The timeline in Flash shows black dots whenever it pauses. here is a screen shot:
See those black dots in the timeline? I will insert a picture of what happens on one of those black dots:
It's the same animation, but only shows a little of the graphic. Like I said, it plays fine when I open it with an internet browser, or photoshop, but not in Flash or Captivate.
Thanks so much for helping me with this!
    Nat

When you exported from Photoshop did you use LZW compression on the GIF? If so can you try disabling LZW compression and reimporting to see if your issue goes away? What you depict there looks like updated frames only contain the part of the picture that's changing, which is compression. GIF isn't compressed by nature and each frame should be a whole picture, unless compressed. I'm not certain LZW would even perform spatinal compression but it's worth a shot to see if it does.
Aside that have you tried using Import to Library, then dragging the image from the library into the timeline?

  • Animated gif jerky in Safari 7

I have a website with a page-loading animated gif, which stutters badly the first time a page is loaded. In subsequent re-loadings of the page the gif animation is smooth. This problem only occurs in Safari 7.0.1, not other browsers. In fact before I upgraded to Mavericks, it worked fine on Safari, too (Mountain Lion). Please help.

I also noticed this today, and it seems that for some reason the frame rate of animated GIFs is limited to 10 frames per second, or a minimum delay of 100msec per frame. This animation should loop every second: http://www.dr-lex.be/tmp/Rotation1Sec.gif
In Firefox it behaves correctly, but if you time it in Safari, you'll see that it takes 5 seconds per loop, because it has 50 frames.
By the way, QuickTime Player can also play GIF animations and it plays them at the correct speed.
It appears this bug is not in Safari itself, but somewhere deeper in some framework. The bug ID is 5815212.

  • An animated gif that plays on all devices

    Hello again on gifs...
I am in PS CS4 on XP.
I created an animated gif. I was wondering if there was some way to make it work on all devices. Phones, MP3 players, computers (both mac & pc)...etc..
It looks great on my computer at work and at home, but not on my iPod. It does not play or show on my iPod. My boss checked on her computer said you have to click on the image for it to play (but I don't have to do that). It did not work on her BlackBerry either.
Just wondering if there is someway out there that the gif can work on all devices because it will be emailed out to a few people.
I see there is a device central within the program, but not sure about that. There seems to be a lot of types there, but I don't see BlackBerry? I'll check again. In the meantime, I thought I'd write this up to see if there was an answer.
    Thank you.

It will not on my iPod....
Which one? Nano never has displayed GIFs, only JPEGs. Touch will display GIFs only in Safari and Mail and whtever custom apps you may have that use GIFs. That would be very much the same on iPad and iPhone, though those also can display PNGs outside of the browser. Similarly, Android devices can display JPEG, PNG and SVG natively, but GIFs are disabled/ forbidden on most of them and may only dispaly in the browser app. Dunno much about Symbian/ Meego/ Blackberry, but I would think that pretty much the same rules apply - said stuff being disabled to conserve battery power, for security reasons or not even dynamically loaded because of ad blocking...
