Another one with much higher BB usage than normal

Hi,
This is probably going to sound familiar to lots of people, but we also are recording much higher BB usage than normal. We are only on the 10gb package, as our max 512kb broadband doesn't make it worthwhile trying to do much with the www.
Our usage is usually pretty close to the 10gb, and in fact we have probably gone over it 3 or 4 times in the last 2 years (I work away a lot, so Skype gets hammered, which I know could be up to about 350mb/hour). Our average usage has been 9.87gb according to BT. I was home at the end of June, and decided to reactivate BT FON, and my wife and I also installed the Smarttalk app. Now, halfway through July, we are already up at over 7gb used.
The warning e-mail for 6gb used was last night, the usage monitor is already showing over 7gb - that is a heck of a lot of broadband usage for a property with such a slow connection. I have tried tackling BT in the past, and got absolutely nowhere, being told that although they could give me details of the previous weeks usage, they couldn't go back any further because that informaton was unavailable - unsatisfactory response, but that was all I could get.
Obviously BT are saying we could always go unlimited, but I'd rather find out what the issue is and why this sudden increase - we aren't using that much internet.

Got the same problem, see my seperate Post.
Don't wish to hi-jack your post but how can BT be tackeled?
It's hard to keep a daily check, I would say impossible!

To reduce data usage, you should put iPad on Aeroplane Mode to stop all background activities when not using iPad.

there just have ONLY ONE CORE %sys 100
the top command show average of all cpu core sys% usage
when the one core sys% is 100%
the system are very slow .
e.g: when I create a database instance used for a long time . over 2 hours

  • Websphere/Oracle 11 - much more Heap Usage than with Oracle 10

    Hi all,
while testing our application with Oracle 11 (previously, we had Oracle 10), we saw that our server uses much more heap space.
It seems as it has something to do with T4CConnection/T4CPreparedStatement; there are 500 objects of T4CPreparedStatement allocated. Someone told me, that Oracle 11 is using SoftReferences to keep the connection pool; but we don't need that.
Is that correct? Could that be the problem for the increased heap space? If yes - how can we avoid connection pooling?
    Thanks a lot!!

I suspect you are getting a connection for each user and holding onto it for the duration that he is logged in. Also, that you are not closing resultSet and preparedStatements correctly. Rewrite all your code to get/use/close a connection each time its needed as quickly as possible in a try/catch/finally block. There is no performance penalty opening and closing connections countless times in your code (actually, you are not really closing it, but returning it to the pool).
Here is a previous post I provided on how to get/use/close a connection:
Re: can not get the right query result using JDBC
Note: within the above example, you can pass the already open connection to another function within the above function for it to use. Within that other function, you create a new preparedStatement and resultSet. After using it, you close the resultSet and preparedStatement (in that second function), but not the connection (its closed in the outer function).

  • Swapping power supply for one with a higher wattage?

    Hi
I need to replace the power supply in my Quicksilver 733MHz. Can I replace it with one from a MDD 1.25GHz? The MDD has a higher max wattage rating but does this make any real difference? I think the Quicksilver is 344W and the MDD is 360W.
    Thanks

    Hi-
No, the MDD PSU won't fit or work.
There really isn't much need for a higher wattage PSU in the QS.
If you really want one, convert the wiring on an ATX PSU.

  • Another one with broadband at dial-up speeds

When I first connected to BT Broadband on Tuesday, all was well. Fast connection, good streaming.
Now it is down to dial-up speeds:
    The results from BT Speedtest:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 0.1 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.05 Mbps-0.25 Mbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :3.97 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 0.14 Mbps
    Details from Router log:
    04:48:55, 26 Oct.    (60193.730000) DSL is up
04:48:54, 26 Oct.    (60192.780000) DSL noise margin: 22.00 dB upstream, 8.80 dB downstream
04:48:54, 26 Oct.    (60192.710000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 3968 Kbps downstream
Running the "Silent LIne" test shows just that, silence.
This is in a house with three phone sockets, none of them a master. (All old style BT sockets, all with a filter.)
By contrast, I have another line running on the same cables from the same exchange that currently connects to the exchange at 7.87 and has an IP Profile of 6.5.
How do I get BT to investigate this? How long before I need to cancel the contract on the grounds that it is not delivering its promised speed?
I should add that the fast connection was made with an old Netgear router/modem, before the Home Hub arrived. I would swap that back in but the IP Profile is so low that it won't make any immediate difference.

    Nope. Too rural for LLU.
SamKnows - Broadband Availability - Handcross (SDHNDCR) Exchange
Look at all those lovely red crosses. Last time anyone opened the door there to add anything seems to have been back in 2006.
Not rural enough, though, for any of those government sponsored broadband programmes.
Actually, I am amazed that TalkTalk can deliver a connection that is usually rock solid at speeds of up to 6 Mbps. The only problem is that when more than two people are on line, it slows to a crawl. That is one reason why I wanted to take up BT's seemingly generous offer.
But thanks all the same for the feedback and for the depressing news that BT is even worse than TalkTalk at dealing with customers. Guess I will just have to sit on my hands for another five days.

  • Another one with Exchange aches...

    Hi folks,
Ok, I've tried for the umpteenth time, my head is buzzing and if I don't get this running this weekend I will throw the whole stuff out of my window. Seriously. I have tried every suggestion I could see here and still fail to connect.
    Installations
Server: SBS2003 with all updates installed, brandnew, more or less with an out-of-the-box standard set-up, works as a file- and printserver in his spare time
Computers: Apple iMac 2,8 Ghz Aluminium with newest OSX 10.5.4 and Entourage, MacBook 1,83 Ghz with same set-up, Dell Vostro 1710 with XP Pro SP2 and Outlook 2003, 3 PC Desktops with same set-up
Mobile devices: 5 HTC TyTn II aka Kaiser on WM 6.1, one iPhone 3G 16 GB
    OWA: https://mail.mycompany.com/exchange
    Server: mail.mycompany.com
    e-mail: [email protected]
    User: Rene
    Password: gofigure
    Domain: mycompany.local
No SSL or other certificates employed.
This is a real small business environment with only 6 users and very low security policies, aside from a firewall there are none. (The information shared is really not sensitive.)
Now the thing is, that all those other devices (aside from the iPhone) work and sync just fine. Really great.
I have set-up the iPhone for this so often that I lost count. Everytime I get the same response: it says Exchange set up for sync and signals an all clear. When I go to my mail and open the Exchange Account there is nothing there (no folders, no mails). When I sent a testmail from the Exchange to my mobileMe and normal business account, I get nothing, although the iPhone makes the "swoosh" sound which should signal that a mail was sent successfully.
During the set-up, it nags because of the lacking SSL (we don't use that on any of our devices), but it can be configured without any other error messages.
If I try to access OWA with the iPhones Browser it works flawlessly (even without an error message), so why can't I get it to work with the Mail app? First priority is to get mail, I could live with it if I could add the Exchange contacts and calendar later.
We do have a professional company who cares for our server, but they have a steep price tag and I wan't to avoid heated discussions with my boss, just because I wanted to get my "toy" as he named it to work.
I am not an MCSE, but have a good idea of what Exchange is about and most of the time can find my way. I also have full administrative rights, so I can make any changes you want me to.
I would greatly appreciate step-by-step help...
Thank you very much in advance for your tips. Any help is welcome.
    Rene

I too got tired of trying different solutions from the forums and everywhere else I could find information. It seems as if everyone has their own special solution that works for them. Their solutions didn't work for me. I ended up going through these guys for a remote setup.

Within 15 minutes he had my boss's iPhone syncing. I bit the bullet and paid the $175 fee. It was worth it. I got the boss off my back and was the hero for the day. If you don't feel like paying the fee, this is how he set up my server:

Manually create a copy of the Exchange virtual directory. Right-click Exchange, go to All Tasks > Save Configuration to a File. Give it a name and save config to desktop. Right-click Default Web Site, go to New > Virtual Directory (from file). Browse to saved config of Exchange and click Read File. Config will appear in box below. Select it and then click OK. Name this new virtual directory “ExchApple”. Next, add new string value called “ExchangeVDir” (case is important) to this registry entry: HKLM > System > CurrentControlSet > Services > MasSync > Parameters. Modify the data value to “/ExchApple”. In the end you should have only two entries; one labeled “(Default)” and one labeled “ExchangeVDir”. Configure the ExchApple virtual directory as follows:
    ExchApple virtual directory:
    Authentication and access control
    -Enable anonymous access: No
    -Integrated Windows authentication: Yes
    -Basic authentication: Yes
    -Default domain: MYDOMAIN
    Secure communications
    -Require secure channel: No
    -Ignore client certificates
    Perform an IIS Reset.
Check to make sure you can log into your Exchange and OMA virtual directories via a web browser.
On the iPhone itself it was set up as follows:
    Email: [email protected]
    Server: OutsideIPAddress or URL
    Username: me (without domain name)
Ignore all certificate errors when setting up the Exchange account on the phone. Just keep hitting next. I'm not using SSL so if you're not then turn that off after the account gets created. Make sure you have ports 80 and 443 open on your firewall and pointed to your Exchange server. Open up your inbox and sync your email.
This solution worked for me. If it doesn't then give the aforementioned people a call.

  • Another one with slow speeds - sorry!

We have been BT BB customers for years and have been fine most of the time. We are supplied by an ADSL max exchange and we are about 1.5 miles away. In the last few days my download speeds are VERY variable sometimes taking minutes to load a page if at all, sometimes fine.
We have a Home Hub 3 with a master socket fitted with an i-plate, microfilters to all sockets were replaced last year.
I'm a bit clueless (better since I've been stalking on this board for the last few days)
Quiet test is - well quiet. No crackles, hisses or anything added.
I.m not aware of any connection drops, I do admit to one reset press. and there have been a couple of episodes of disconnection to attach to the test socket.
I have a fault reported with BT who say the problem is with my internal equipment and private engineer booked to fit me a ADSL service specific faceplate and trace my fault but TBH the price quoted might be more than I can afford so if you guys can help me I'd be very, very pleased.
    Thank you in advance

  • Xorg + xf86-video-intel lags with compiz / high cpu usage without it

I have recently noticed that my X server lags. It happens approximately once per second (it's fairly regular) and it can be easily observed when watching movies, dragging windows or rotating cube. Screen just hangs for some milliseconds. Lags are bigger and happens more often when many windows are opened.
Even worse things happen when I'm _not_ running compiz. X's cpu usage spikes permanently up to 30-40% and lags are even more noticable.
    My hardware:
    Laptop with Intel GMA 950
    Configuration
I tried some different xorg.confs but it seems to be irrevelant. It happens even on plain conf created by 'Xorg -configure'
    xorg-server 1.5.3-3
    mesa 7.2-1
    xf86-video-intel 2.4.3-1
    kernel26 2.6.27.8-1
I also tried downgrading these packages to
    xorg-server 1.4.2-2
    mesa 7.0.3-3
    xf86-video-intel 2.3.2-1
    kernel26 2.6.27-1
and it seems to resolve cpu usage problem but not the lags.
Does anybody know what might cause these lags? It's really annoying.

It turned out that color depth was the issue. I think that 24bit is too big for my graphics card and compiz (although I remember that i810+24bit+compiz worked fine).
So changing DefaultDepth in xorg.conf to 16 fixed the problem. Is there any other way to workaround this without decreasing color depth?

  • Another one with the "did not respond" error

    Hi all,
We've been successfully video chatting with my parents using iChat AV for years on our old machine - an 800 MHz G4 iMac. We just upgraded to a new iMac with the Intel Core Duo processor, and now are getting the "did not respond" error that others are describing. Because nothing else has changed in the setup at either end other than our new machine, the problem must lie in the new iMac. After perusing this forum and Ralph's site, I tried setting the QuickTime streaming speed to 1.5 Mbps rather than "automatic," and turned off IPv6, but to no avail.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!
    The Rosses

    Hi rossma,
If you go to System Preferences > Network and then
Select the Connection method in the second drop
    down.
    Then the TCP/IP tab
Does this say Using DHCP ?
Does it give you an IP of something close to
    192.168.1.100 ?
    Yes.
Does it list the "router" IP as being 192.168.1.1 ?
    Yes.
If you connect the computer to the Toshiba what IP do
    you get then ?
Does it match the same IP as when you go here
    http://myip.dk/
Well, I didn't try disconnecting the iMac from the Linksys and hooking it up directly to the cable modem (would require wrestling with a nest of cables), but I can see the IP address that the Outside World sees in the Linksys configuration page, and that matches what the webpage you mentioned says. if you need me to connect it directly, let me know and I'll try that.
If it does then the Toshiba is in Bridge mode and the
Linksys may be doing the ISP login
I can not see the Toshiba in this list
    http://portforward.com/routers.htm which is why I
think it is not routing and is in Bridge mode. (this
will mean all the ports are open in it).
If all ports are open, then the cable modem shouldn't be the problem, right?
As far as Quicktime is concerned it might pay to
check the Font Book and see if Helvetica is active.
Huh? This is the first I've heard of Helvetica being problematic! It's active at the moment - should I disable it?
Thanks for all your patience and effort on my behalf!

  • HT4914 What happens with my higher quality songs than itunes can offer?

I have songs higher than 256 kbps, some in mp3 320 kbps and other in ALAC format, what’s going to happen to these songs? Will I be downgraded to iTunes quality?

Nothing will happen to them.  Keep them backed up so that you will still have copies if your hard drive fails.
What has caused a lot of discussion, and may be the basis of your question, is the iTunes Match capability.  It is an optional feature, so it will not do anything unless you sign up for it.  If you do sign up for it, your MP3/320 and ALAC songs will be backed up as AAC/256 copies, which as you correctly note, is a downgrade to the audio quality.
For that reason, iTunes Match is not recommended for your situation.

  • Another one with bad looking text

    Hi!
I want to place a text in a motion project, but when I increase the size it looks really bad. I think I saw somewhere that you could do something and it behaves more like its vectorbased so it looks sharp what ever the size, but I can't remember where it is. Could someone lead me?
    Thanks so much
    Morten

Text is a vector operation until you render. In Motion, sometimes when you apply certain effects or convert to 3D with some effects rasterization occurs and you have to read up on that carefully because it's confusing. Sorry, it confuses the heck out of me, maybe you can understand it. If you are brining in bitmapped or rasterized artwork and try to scale it, all you do is make the pixels bigger. Can't tell from your post what you are using for "text."
