Websphere/Oracle 11 - much more Heap Usage than with Oracle 10

Hi all,
while testing our application with Oracle 11 (previously, we had Oracle 10), we saw that our server uses much more heap space.
It seems as it has something to do with T4CConnection/T4CPreparedStatement; there are 500 objects of T4CPreparedStatement allocated. Someone told me, that Oracle 11 is using SoftReferences to keep the connection pool; but we don't need that.
Is that correct? Could that be the problem for the increased heap space? If yes - how can we avoid connection pooling?
Thanks a lot!!

I suspect you are getting a connection for each user and holding onto it for the duration that he is logged in. Also, that you are not closing resultSet and preparedStatements correctly. Rewrite all your code to get/use/close a connection each time its needed as quickly as possible in a try/catch/finally block. There is no performance penalty opening and closing connections countless times in your code (actually, you are not really closing it, but returning it to the pool).
Here is a previous post I provided on how to get/use/close a connection:
Re: can not get the right query result using JDBC
Note: within the above example, you can pass the already open connection to another function within the above function for it to use. Within that other function, you create a new preparedStatement and resultSet. After using it, you close the resultSet and preparedStatement (in that second function), but not the connection (its closed in the outer function).

  • Another one with much higher BB usage than normal

    Hi,
    This is probably going to sound familiar to lots of people, but we also are recording much higher BB usage than normal. We are only on the 10gb package, as our max 512kb broadband doesn't make it worthwhile trying to do much with the www.
    Our usage is usually pretty close to the 10gb, and in fact we have probably gone over it 3 or 4 times in the last 2 years (I work away a lot, so Skype gets hammered, which I know could be up to about 350mb/hour). Our average usage has been 9.87gb according to BT. I was home at the end of June, and decided to reactivate BT FON, and my wife and I also installed the Smarttalk app. Now, halfway through July, we are already up at over 7gb used.
    The warning e-mail for 6gb used was last night, the usage monitor is already showing over 7gb - that is a heck of a lot of broadband usage for a property with such a slow connection. I have tried tackling BT in the past, and got absolutely nowhere, being told that although they could give me details of the previous weeks usage, they couldn't go back any further because that informaton was unavailable - unsatisfactory response, but that was all I could get.
    Obviously BT are saying we could always go unlimited, but I'd rather find out what the issue is and why this sudden increase - we aren't using that much internet.

    Got the same problem, see my seperate Post.
    Don't wish to hi-jack your post but how can BT be tackeled?
    It's hard to keep a daily check, I would say impossible!

  • Does LTE use more data usage than 4G?

    Does LTE use more data usage than 4G?

    The question makes no sense.
    LTE and 4G are types of connections. They do not use Data, they allow your apps and services on the iPhone or iPad to use the Data access.
    In most cases 4G is slightly slower than LTE.

    is snow leopard usb backup drive access much much quicker using firewire than with usb 2.0 ?

    I migrated from a USB2 external hard drive (when it failed) to the Firewire 800 and have not looked back.  I also sync from that primary drive to a secondary backup drive (still USB2).  Everything I do with the firewire drive is significantly faster than USB2.

  • IPhone 6 shows more storage usage than actually used

    my iphone 6 Is using 54gb when I know I use less than that and I only had this phone for few months

    How much is being used by other? This is the iOS, application data, mail data, and a few other things. If Other is more than 3GB, then that is indicitive of corrupted files on the phone. The way to take care of this is a restore. You can try a restore from a backup first, however that generally will just copy the corrupt file back to the phone, so you would need to restore as a new device. Remember, this will delete all data off the device.

  • Why does Magic Mouse use much more battery power than the keyboard?

    I have the Bluetooth versions of the keyboard and the Magic Mouse. I use the same rechargeable batteries in each. Yet the mouse has now come to the end of a THIRD set of AAs, while the keyboard still has 60% of its first set.
    Why? They are both constantly in use, so why does the Mouse drain batteries so much faster than the keyboard? Viz: the mouse about once a week (two, max), while at this rate, it will be another month or more before the keyboard drains.

    Actually I don't! I consider myself a 'power user' in that I will always use the keyboard first, and I learn keyboard shortcuts for nearly everything I do regularly.
    I would guess my use is 50:50 at worst?

  • HT4847 Showing more iCloud  usage than phone

    I have two products attached to my iCloud account. My iPhone 4S and my iPad 3. On my iPhone 4S (32GB) it shows 8.9GB used and 19.3GB free. But on iCloud it is showing that my iPhone is using 17.5GB of my iCloud storage. How is this possible???

    25MB to 132MB isn't that much... that being said if you are connecting to WiFi make sure you turn cellular data off in the settings. You can be connected to WiFi, but devices may disconnect and attach to the cellular network.

  • TM backing up much more data size than selected...

    I excluded every thing but my Users folder in the TM prefs for backup. My User folder is 29GB.
    When TM begins it's 1st backup the backup size is 62GB??? Why is that?

    pgonzalez wrote:
    I'm excluding because TM gives me the choice to excluded - and I don't have that much space on my Time Capsule HD, but after your explaination I would consider backing up all the folders except my Avid Media/OMFI Files.
    I have a lot of data in my /Library folder because of FCP Studio (over 15GB) so thats why that's excluded.
    Then exclude only those files/folders. The rest of the /Library folder is part of your OS; without it, you can't successfully restore your whole system.
    Any other thoughts?
    If you decide to exclude your /System and /Library folders, then you may as well exclude the hidden folders, too. Just check the +Show invisible items+ box after selecting the plus sign in TM Preferences > Options.
    Back to the size discrepancy: When you go to Time Machine Preferences > Options, what shows under the list of excluded items for +Total included?+ The size of your initial backup should be close to that. It may be somewhat smaller (as TM automatically excludes most caches, system work files, trash, etc), but it shouldn't be larger.
    And just where did you see the 62 gb figure? If in the "Backing Up xxx GB of 62 GB" display, that should be accurate. But if it was in the +...62 MB requested (including padding), nn GB available+ message from your logs or Time Machine Buddy, that includes about 20% for workspace TM needs, so the actual backup size would be about 52 gb.

  • I haven't done an update since 24.0 because my computer is running out of memory. How much MORE memory will I need to get up to version 28.0?

    I haven't done an update since 24.0 because my computer is running out of memory. How much MORE memory will I need to get up to version 28.0?
    My computer is really old.
    It is running out of memory.
    I haven't done a firefox update since 24.0 because I think it will explode my computer.
    I see that v28.0 takes 200MB.
    How much more is this than what is already loaded for my v24.0?
    Will it just add the extra pieces, or will it require a free block of 200MB (which my computer does not have)?
    I don't want to crash and lockup my computer because I try to install something that is too big for the remaining memory.
    Thanks.

    You should updated to Firefox 28, Firefox updates don't take any new space they just replace the existing files.
    There are some things you can do to clean up your hard drive to free up space however, http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=21178060 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956324, also uninstall programs you don't use anymore and delete files you don't need anymore.
    You should also start saving up for a new machine, Windows XP is being dropped from support by Microsoft in a few days, which means it will no longer be safe to use on the internet.

    Hi miriamh!
    I have an article here that addresses syncing with iTunes. This article can help you understand the syncing process a little more, and can be found here:
    iOS: Syncing with iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386
    You may want to check to make sure you are syncing the exact same amount of music as before. You can also utilize one of the options for syncing that would downgrade higher bitrate format songs to a lower bitrate so that they take up less space on your phone. That option is visible here:
    Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • Why does Verizion care more about $30 than keeping customers?

    My wireless contract is up on July 28, 2013.  I went to the store to upgrade our phones and renew our contract.  I received an email congratulating me on being such a great customer and I have worked hard to earn a free phone upgrade.  I go to the store, pick out our phones, the agent takes an hour to program the new phones and then tells me that we owe $150.00.  I ask why - he says it's the upgrade fee. The email I received didn't mention an upgrade fee, the sales person at the store never mentioned or advised us of a $30 fee for our free upgrade until after we picked out and he programmed our new phones.  When I called customer service and asked the supervisor "Is it more important to Verizon to collect the $150 upgrade fee than to keep me as a customer and earn monthly revenue from my wireless and Fios contracts?"  He gave a lame long winded response that started with "everyone else is doing it" and ended with yes.  So I asked him again "Is it more important to Verizon to collect the $150 upgrade fee than to  keep me as a customer and earn monthly revenue from my wireless and  Fios contracts?" - He said " yes.  It is more important to collect the fee than keep you as our customer."  I think this says it all...Verizon cares more about cares charging it's customer's extra fees than keeping us as customers.  And... Verizon...is "Everyone else charges" really a good reason for you to charge?  Remember when you were young asking your mom to do something and saying "Please everyone else is doing it" or getting into trouble and saying "Everyone Else is doing it"...what was the response?  The response was always.."What if everyone else were jumping off a bridge?"  Maybe if your customer service and sales people were less rude and you gave your customers more value for their dollar instead of more crap your long time customers would be looking elsewhere.  You want loyalty from your customers...you should try giving your customers a little bit of loyalty.  I will be moving our business elsewhere.

    Firstly, the upgrade fee has been around since April of last year. Sorry you didn't know about it, but frankly it's old news by now.
    Secondly, Verizon is actually charging you LESS than any other carrier would for an upgrade. AT&T's upgrade fee is $36, and Sprint's is all kinds of messed up and involves some sort of extra activation fee. So I wouldn't get all upset over the upgrade fee if I were you since leaving the company will cost you much more over time than just sticking with 'em.
    Thirdly, there's no real excuse for how that CSR acted towards you, imho no CSR should ever tell you that their company values money more than their customers. That in particular I would file a formal complaint against that rep specifically because that behavior is inexcusable

  • Test program running taking much more time on high end server T5440 than low end server  T5220

    Hi all,
    I have written the following program and run on both T5440  [1.4 GHz, 95 GB RAM, 32 cores(s), 256 logical (virtual) processor(s),] and  T5220 [(UltraSPARC-T2 (chipid 0, clock 1165 MH) , 8GB RAM, 1 core, 8 virtual processors )] on same OS version.  I found that T5540 server takes more time than T5220. Please find below the details.
    test1.cpp
    #include <iostream>
    #include <pthread.h>
    using namespace std;
    #define NUM_OF_THREADS 20
    struct ABCDEF {
    char A[1024];
    char B[1024];
    void *start_func(void *)
        long long i = 6000;
        while(i--)
                    ABCDEF*             sdf = new ABCDEF;
                    delete sdf;
                    sdf = NULL;
        return NULL;
    int main(int argc, char* argv[])
        pthread_t tid[50];
        for(int i=0; i<NUM_OF_THREADS; i++)
                    pthread_create(&tid[i], NULL, start_func, NULL);
                    cout<<"Creating thread " << i <<endl;
        for(int i=0; i<NUM_OF_THREADS; i++)
                    pthread_join(tid[i], NULL);
                    cout<<"Waiting for thread " << i <<endl;
    After executing the above program on T5440 takes :
    real 0.78
    user 3.94s
    sys 0.05
    After executing the above program on T5220 takes :
    real 0.23
    user 1.43s
    sys 0.03
    It seems that T5440 which is high end server takes almost 3 times more time than T5220 which is low end server.
    However, I have one more observation. I tried the following program :
    test2.cpp
    #include <iostream>
    #include <pthread.h>
    using namespace std;
    #define NUM_OF_THREADS 20
    struct ABCDEF {
    char A[1024];
    char B[1024];
    int main(int argc, char* argv[])
        long long i = 6000000;
        while(i--)
            ABCDEF*  sdf = new ABCDEF;
            delete sdf;
            sdf = NULL;
        return 0;
    It seems that T5440 server is fast in this case as compaired to T5220 server.
    Could anyone please help me out the exact reason for this behaviour as my application is slow as well on this T5440 server. I have posted earlier as well for the same issue.
    Thanks in advance !!!
    regards,
    Sanjay

    You already asked this question...
    48 hours earlier, and in the same Solaris forum space
    Repeating the post isn't going to get you a response any faster, and actually now have people NOT respond because you are not showing any patience.
    These are end-user community forums, not a place to expect Oracle Technical Support.   There is no obligation that there be a response.
    If you have a business-critical issue and hope to get accurate and timely response, then use your service contract credentials to open a Support request.

    It appears that at the same time the O.P. posted this redundant thread, they also posted the same question to at least one other forum web site:

  • My iphone is currently using battery life much more quickly than inthe past, and it also has an icon tht is starying on the screen, to the left of the battery charge percentage, that looks like a lock with a circle around it

    i have an iphone that is using battery life much more quickly than in the past, a full charge is going to zero in a half a day or so, with out much use.
    an icon is also appearing next to the charge percentage in the top right, and the icon is a circle around a lock
    can anyone tell me what the problem is, and what the icon means?

    The Icon meas your display orientation is locked to vertical so it wont change when you turn the phone sideways.
    First thing you should check with the battery life is multitasking, which also happens to be where the orientation lock can be turned off.  check out   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4211 and go from there

  • I had to reinstall iTunes and lost the library, so I used what I had on my hard drive, but I have much more music on my iPod classic than is in the iTunes library. If I synch now will it delete all that extra music from my iPod?

    I recently had to reinstall iTunes on my PC (Windows 7) and lost most of the library. I restored with what I had on my hard drive on the PC, but there is much more music on my iPod classic than is in the iTunes current library. I'm worried that if I synch now it will delete the extra music from my iPod, some of which I don't have available to re-rip etc.. Will this happen, or is it safe to synch more content without losing from the iPod what is already there but not in my iTunes library on the PC?  Thanks in advance for any help.

    Are you now using a different username from the one you used prior to migrating? If so that is the reason for the problem. You might, then, give this a try:
    To fix Home folder permissions
    Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
    Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

    Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

    Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
    BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?
