Another slow macbook thread
As the title says really, for a few weeks now my 2012 Macbook Pro is running slow and freezing even doing the simplest of tasks like writing this message.
some info on my mac -
Macbook Pro 13inch 2012
2.5 GHz intel core i5
4GB 1600 ram
500gb sata disk
it suddenly just began to run slow so I did a fresh install of mavericks, no luck. So I did a fresh install of snow leopard again no luck and since then have worked back up and now running on Yosemite.
The only way the laptop seems to perform at an okay pace is if I am running disk utility, whether that be a verifying/repair the permissions or erasing free space... but still it is slow but at least it usable to some degree.
any ideas on what could be up?
the laptop was dropped from a considerable height last winter but after it happen the only damage was cosmetic and it performed fine until a few weeks back..
I have thought about replacing the disk or ram but I don't want to spend the money incase I'm wrong or missed out something
any help is appreciated? thanks adam.

Just another thread to document the major issues I'm having with Lightroom 4.
System: Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel i7-720QM, 8 GB RAM 1333MHz, 500 GB HD, ATI Radeon 4670 1GB with Wacom Intuos 5
Working in the Develop module has been completely unacceptable and is costing me hours of editing time and frustrating, which means its costing me money. Everything from navigating between photos to adjusting slider bars seems to be laggy to put it lightly. After using the Adjustment Brush, making universal changes is taking forever! And if I got back to create an additional adjustment with the Adjustment Brush tool, it's almost not even worth it because it is so slow to respond. Similar to the slow downs after using the Adjustment Brush tool, any changes made after making any adjustments in the Lens Correction tab seem to be super sluggish as well. Oh top of it all, my computer is running extremely hot when running Lightroom, which ever occured in past versions!
I've tried several suggestions that I've seen in forums, such as creating a fresh Catalog and importing the files directly into that new Catalog, hiding the Histogram to free up resources, reducing the size of the Catalog to just the working set I'm currently working on... I've now installed the 4.1 RC and do seem to see some increase in response with the sliders within the develop module, but once I start using the Adjustment Brush and Lens Correction, it seems to be back to it's sluggish self. And after editing a few photos, the entire program is crawling.
I think it's great that Adobe has such a strong following that people seem to be so understanding and patient about these issues, but find it unacceptable that such an unpolished release was issued to the public. If the issues are eventually remedied I will be fully on board with Lightroom, once again, because I do think that the revamped develop module has been a major improvement for editing and workflow, but all those improvements are pretty useless when I'm losing so many hours battling with performance issues. No changes, nothing at all, in actual fact I don't even have a PC connected to this broadband line it's purely for the games consoles. I have a separate broadband line for my home office etc.
Just had a call from BT India, with out wishing to sound derogatory I might as well talk to my pet cat. Apparently they were ringing to see if the problem had been resolved, I only reported it 2 hrs ago. -
Hi, my MacBook is running very slowly and the fan is on most of the time. I added another 2G of RAM a few months ago and things were good for a while. I can't recall what I've added since, if anything. I've read a few responses to similar problems and one thing I (clearly misguidedly) had was Clean My Mac which I've now uninstalled. I still have the same issues though so am wondering if it's a result of whatever CMM may have irreparably done to my system. I saw someone else posted details from something called EtreCheck so I am doing that too. I don't think I have anything else installed that that person had. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yet another slow speed thread....
Every so often I have issues with the speeds pertaining to my two BT Broadband lines into my house.
So here we go again, I've problems with one of the lines which for my rural village location usually nets very good results...
Normally I get this :-
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 3072 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2332 kbps
Presently I'm getting:-
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 1344 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 878 kbps
Why I ask does the speed keep changing, today BT India claims it's a line CHOKE problem, likely story.
Net result wait another 48 hours for another phone call.
I get these issues every 6 months or so, I suspect the grass wouldn't be any greener with other ISP.
Can anybody offer any thoughts? No changes, nothing at all, in actual fact I don't even have a PC connected to this broadband line it's purely for the games consoles. I have a separate broadband line for my home office etc.

How can i copy files from one external hard disk to another using macbook pro with retina display
How can i copy files from one external hard drive to another using macbook pro with retina display?
That's odd - if you open Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and select the disk(s), how are they formatted? If you're only going to be used with your Mac, they should be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

Slow Macbook Pro- please help, I don't understand previous advice.
Hello all,
I have a very slow Macbook Pro running on Lion 10.7.3.
I looked up this problem on the forums before I sent this message but I didn't quite understand the advice. I have been on something called Disk Utility and Activity Monitor but don't really understand what I'm looking for. It seems a large percentage of my mac is 'idle' if that makes sense. Someone said to look at Page Out but I really don't understand what that means and what sort of numbers are normal.
I do have some storage left so I don't think it could be that. A lot of my gigabytes seem to be taken up by movies and 'other'. I've tried deleted a load of videos but it hardly made a difference. I have Mac Mail and it seems very slow on my Macbook compared to on my Ipad and iphone. iCal is also very slow on here and it always takes a while to load internet pages. It isnt the wifi connection.
Please help and bear in mind I am by no means a Mac whizz so you might have to talk in layman's terms!
Thanks,
AmyIf you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message. -
Slow macbook 13" aluminum late 2008
I use MacKeeper frequently and it seems to make a difference, but not a big one. Just ran Etrecheck for the first time and got this report, but I don't know how to interpret it. For example, what does this mean?: Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite Should I delete the startup items?

Apr 20, 2015, 02:46:35 PM Self test - passedBack up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
Uninstall "Sophos": http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/120838.aspx
Uninstall "MacKeeper". Read below.
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 required more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.

The items shown are not doing anything.

You don't need that garbage either. Always obtain software from legitimate sources.
"MacFUSE" is outdated.
/etc/hosts - Count: 1
If you have no explanation for that modification, read Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file.
Battery: Health = Replace Soon
Do that too: https://www.apple.com/batteries/service-and-recycling/
You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.
For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.
Lastly, you are using Google:
Google products including Google Chrome and Google Drive will burden any Mac regardless of its age or configuration. It litters a Mac with a plethora of root level system modifications in the same manner as a virus would, if such a thing were to exist, which it doesn't.
Google derives essentially all its revenue from advertising. Their products are "free" because you are the product Google sells.
Google Chrome was designed for the sole purpose of harvesting your personal information.
If Safari does not meet your requirements, I suggest Firefox. Unlike Chrome, Firefox does not alter a Mac's operating system, does not demand full-time root access for purposes known only to it, is not designed to harvest your personal information, and is not known to cause the degraded performance that Google Chrome is notorious for causing.
If you require Chrome and expect acceptable performance from your hardware, expect the need to replace it with newer hardware frequently.
Fix those problems by not using Google. -
i have a slow macbook, i ran live disk utilities (from hard drive), turned out I needed to repair disk from a installation disk. Did that, I got the volume (Hard drive) repaired from the installation disk disk. To this point, great!
When I reboot from hdd, then run disk utility, I get the same error message i did b4 repair. I went thru two rounds of this.....
Can anyone help? thanksSorry guys, I don't see how to reply to you so I use reply to "me" basically.
So the error I get is "volume header needs minor repair" and then you need to perform repair from the installation disk message.
I did repair not verify from the disk twice. Every time ending in the "the volume had ha been successfully repaired". Then I reboot from the internal disk. Run disk utilities from it, do verify and get the same error message I got before repair. I hope this can shed some light fr you guys. Sorry I didn't include details in the original

You have only about 10 percent free drive space left. 50gB is enough to run the computer but, if it gets much smaller, that can slow how Virtual Memory (VM) works as the system has to more carefully search the remaining space for qualified blocks to which to write data.
Adding RAM will reduce the writes-to-disk by VM but you should probably consider a little holiday disk cleaning of stuff you no longer use.

Yet another grey folder thread, help!
Sorry for yet another grey folder thread, but here goes:
Today, earlier, installed Firefox update, along with some addon updates for that program. Quit Firefox and attempt to relaunch, relaunch fails. Reset computer, thinking that will do the trick, I now have grey folder with question mark.
Resolve attempts: reset pram = fail; apple care cd = will not launch/fail; disk utility from original install disks = fail; cannot get repair of disk or permissions to work, continually get error about "failing on exit"; safe mode launch = fail
So, I've done everything, and I've come to conclusion that I am f***, and my HDD is fried (but I hope I am wrong).
So, dear gurus, my question(s)
A) Is my HDD salvageable at all? is there some trick to getting the AppleCare cd to work? Anything?!?!
if not, then B) How can I recover my documents/music/pictures? Long story short, there are several things on there that never had a chance to make my back up schedule, and I desperately want to keep them. Any way to make/copy a disk image to save the docs/imgs, or Firewire them to an external hdd? Do I need to consider a professional HDD rescue?Looks like a mechanical failure, and Apple won't cover the replacement due to a drop it sustained a year or two ago (the power cable was in, and it fell on the connection point, denting that in, Apple states there is a critical board their and that it would be $950 Tier 3 repair which I can't afford). So I'm going to try a Firewire Migration and a few other things and see if that works. If not, oh well. Thanks everyone for the ideas!

Trouble with slow Macbook Air. I have first generation MacBook Air and have a hard time keeping hard drive from being full. After trashing many docs, I have almost 5 gigs available, but mac is slow and I keep getting color wheel when I use Mail. I'd like to install Lion, but now I'm afraid it will slow down my machine even further. Do I have enough free hard disc space? Is Mail problem related to free hard disc space? Thanks for your help!
7gb of free disc space is required to install Lion. Read this about how to free up disc space: http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html. Also, advice on how to speed up your mac: http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/25_ways_speed_your_mac

Hey guys,
so I basically fixed my slow MacBook Pro about 2 weeks ago and it worked fine, but as of a about a week ago its just back to being just as bad as it was before and I can't seem to find any solutions.
I'm using a MacBook Pro 4GB DDR and 2.53GHz 2 Duo running on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
I've already looked for spikes in console and Activity Monitor and nothing to be found there other than a rather slow Firefox and generally slow Browsers.
I've deinstalled Akamai but it's apparently still on here and still running Errors but I can't erase it with just the console erase commands.
Heeeelp pleaseEspecially Firefox and Safari but Pages and iTunes are starting to run slow too, and by running slow I mean the applications are starting up way slower than before and aren't running as smoothly anymore (kinda choppy page opening, recent crashing and non-responsivenes).
Nope I tried it on 3 different internet connections and two of them were the highest connection rates available here in Germany so not the connection. -
Is it possible to share networks with another mac (MacBook)?
Is it possible to share networks with another mac (MacBook)?
I want to be able to create a document on my computer and save it on both my MacBook Pro and another MacBook. Also, I want to be able to open documents saved only on the MacBook on my MacBook Pro. Is that possible on the same wirelss?
Thank you!You would not want to use ad hoc networking if you also need to access the internet. I'm not even sure it is possible.
How are you accessing the internet from these Macs now? If you have a wifi (or wired) network that you both access in your work location, you should be able to use File Sharing across that network, so you shouldn't need the ad hoc network.
Some general observations:
You'll need a plan for how to keep straight which Mac holds the most current version of a file. That should probably be to keep each file in only one place (your Mac, the other Mac, a local file server, a cloud server). Even in our home, with one person doing most of the file accessing, I find a central location works best for this; in my case, that's a desktop system that stays on all the time, but a disk attached to my AirPort Extreme base station, a Time Capsule, or a NAS would serve.
If you make use of the portability of the MacBook[Pro]s to work in different locations, you'll also need a plan that includes that working away from the main work location. If you often work with common files while away from your main work location, a cloud solution may be best even with just two of you. Depending on the size of your files, one of the free cloud solutions may suffice; most offer paid expansion as your needs grow. -

Like so many others, my MBP has slowed to a crawl. Based on responses to others’ questions, I assume that I have too many items eating up RAM. Here’s my EtreCheck report. Thanks in advance for your help.
