Any chance of roaming charges in Europe if using wi-fi?

can i safely use my S4 in Europe in wi-fi mode with no chance it'll roam since they're GSM and my phone is CDMA?  is there ANY chance it could roam, or should i buy an unlocked GSM smartphone?  I'll buy the unlocked smartphone (as opposed to just unlocked feature phone) if the chance of roaming charges is >0.  I'm interested in apps like Google Maps, transit, etc.

    lkj2340j2,
We want you to travel having a peace of mind. If you were to turn off data. Settings>Connections>Data Usage>Uncheck mobile data. This will turn off your data. You can still have the chance of incurring voice and texting charges. The way to avoid that is by putting the device in Airplane mode. You still will be able to have wifi on.
Safe Travels,

And believe me, the roaming charges are truly frightening!
But in those spots where 4G/LTE works ok, speed is outstanding. So they can stick you with a HUGE roaming charge in a jiffy.....

  • Why was I charged for Roaming on Verizon when I used internet call?

I just got my new iPhone 6 and still learning to use it.  3 days after I got the iPhone, I was overseas. I made several calls via Viber and WeChat but was charged by Verizon as roaming calls. I don't understand why since I dialed the calls within the Viber and WeChat apps and I had wifi connections. I got on the internet on the iPhone 6.
I just find out from Verizon that my iPhone 6 was set up for Roaming - Voice as standard. If my iPhone 6 had Cellular set to Roaming Voice Only, will Roaming take precedence over internet calling such as with Viber or WeChat?
I was very angry with Verizon since they set up my iPhone 6 for Roaming and I told the salesperson I would be traveling overseas. As a new user, I would not know that there was an option to turn Roaming off. Verizon refused to waive the roaming charges stating that the calls were made from my phone. This had been a very frustrating experience with Verizon. We had been a Verizon customer for over 20 years.

Are you sure the roaming charges are not for using the data to make the calls, and not roaming voice minutes? That would make more sense.  If you use Viber or WeChat overseas and are not connected to wifi at the time you make you call, the data will go over the cellular network and you will get very expensive roaming data charges. Also you should have just had cellular turned completely off and only use wifi. The best way to do this is put the phone in airplane mode and then only turn on wifi.

  • Is there a way to use location services while in Europe without incurring roaming charges?

I am traveling in Europe and I want to use a mapping program that requires location services.  Is there any way to do this without incurring roaming charges?

  • Can I use my iPhone 5S in Europe with the global services?  Am I exposed to extra roaming charges?

I am also traveling in the middle of a billing cycle.  Can I change my billing cycle to avoid this?

Yes you can use the 5S in Europe.  It is all roaming charges and expensive.   You can't change your billing cycle, though I am not sure why you want to Change it.  Check out Verizon global information to know rates in each country you are visiting.   Just so you are clear WARNING WARNING.  If you do not know what you are doing and use your phone in foreign countries, including all the countries of Europe, you can rack up tens of thousands (YES greater than $10,000) with very little effort.  Unless you know what you are doing, put the phone in airplane mode, and only then turn wifi on only.

  • I am going to the usa this week.  although I have a Rogers sim card inserted into my ipad I have not activated it. I don't want to incur roaming charges by activating it and taking it to the usa. any advise,

I am travelling to the usa for 10 days soon,  I wish to take my ipad, my hotel doesn't have free wireless. I have a Rogers sim card inserted by the Apple store, but I have not activated it.  I don't wish to activate it to use in the states because of roaming charges.  any suggestions.

If available in the USA, get a pre-paid micro-SIM card for the iPad and use the cellular network there.
It might be enough for 10 days (check what is available and connection rates) and could serve you again for a future trip to the USA.

  • Any Chance Droid Charge (Samsung SCH-I510) Will Get Another OS Update?

I received the Charge, free of Charge (pun intended!) a little over a year ago.  They were giving them away for a 2-yr contract renewal, and I bit!
I've had the Charge for approx. 16 months.  During that time, I have received 3 OTA updates (FP1, FP5 & FP8).  I have also noticed several problems mentioned in these forums already.  Most notably, the problem causing me the most grief is when multiple instances of the phone are created (launched by me, after no activity after each app instance).  All app instances appear simultaneously, and the poor person on the receiving end of the phone call hears me talking through several phone apps simultaneously ... echoing like mad.  Usually, a reboot clears this up.
I should mention that this problem doesn't happen nearly as much since FP8 was pushed.  Don't know if that was a coincidence or not.  But the problem does still happen occasionally.
I recently had another critical issue happen.  All of a sudden, I was getting force closes from many apps simultaneously, including system apps (com.android processes).  The phone became unusable.  Factory reset didn't resolve the problem.  After doing some research, I found that I could push stock software and re-partition the memory space again through ODIN.  I did this, and had no success at first because the phone thought I was using a non-stock battery, even though nothing had changed with the battery (stock battery received with the phone).  After pulling the battery, and re-installing, and pushing the stock software w/ re-partition (pushed the original EP4D flavor of OS), the phone operated as it did when I first received it.  Verizon pushed the "OTA" updates (FP1, FP5 & FP8), and my phone was back to good-as-new performance.  Actually, the phone is quite snappy now.
Needless to say, I'm still concerned about the Charge.  I am not up for contract renewal until March of 2014, so I'm just planning on doing a factory reset whenever I have these problems.
I recently read an article, stating that a bug was discovered in Feb 2013, which allows many devices made in the last 4 years (since "Donut" flavor of Android) to be susceptible to a bug taking advantage of "Master Key".  It claims that a dev could unknowingly push an apk to the Play store, which is infected with this issue.  It seems to be a stretch.  Here's the URL to the article:
    http://tinyurl.com/kj63ae8
I have followed the suggestions outlined in the article, and found that the Samsung droid charge is susceptible.  However, I've read a bit on XDA, and found that this is not really a huge problem, as it requires a user to install an infected apk, which doesn't happen all that often.  It's a flaw in the OS which bug-devs are not actively taking advantage of, it would seem.
Here's my question, I know the few Droid Charge owners out there are still a bit hopeful that it will get an update to the Jellybean OS.  Any chance this is possible?  I for one, would love this!
    Thanks for your consideration.

How to track my iPhone 5 ... I lost it in Singapore n my data roaming is off...are there  any chances to find it ..

It can't be tracked unless it has a data connection to the internet, either via cellular data or wifi.  Unless you set up iCloud, enabled Find My iPhone in settings, and the phone is turned on and (in your case) connected to wifi, you won't be able to track it.

  • I want to take my iPad to Europe.  Will I pay roaming charges like my iPhone will incur?

I know about my iPhone and roaming charges when visiting another country, but does the same hold true of my iPad?
"On the way to Spain," Linda

I will be there in June with my pad.  If you plan to use cell service, you will pay.  If you use the wifi, you will be fine.  There are lots of hot spots in eurpoe - most big hotels, (and small ones as well), public cafes etc will have wifi available.
I was all over Englad and ireland last summer and did not spend a single night where there was not wifi available.

  • Sudden data roaming charge to phone with data roaming disabled on Motorola droid

I have used a droid for the 2 years plus that I have been with Verizon.  I work for a cruise line on a ship.  I am in port every 8 days and use my phone on that day.  I leave my data roaming TURNED OFF at ALL times because I am aware that charges for this are very high when roaming on a ship (I have worked on cruise ships for over 12 years).
For two years I have used my phone in the US port that serves as my home port (Ft Lauderdale this year) and when I get back on board I put the phone in my pocket, forget about it until I get to my room at which time I put it on my desk and it stays there until I either turn it off or until the battery dies.  I have NEVER been charged data roaming fees in the past two years until the past month.  I have made NO CHANGE whatsoever in the way my phone is set up.
This month I received over 500 dollars in data roaming charges which I am being told are 'legitimate charges' because apparently data was pushed to my phone while it was on the ship sailing out of Ft. Lauderdale with data roaming DISABLED.  This happened every 8 days (the debark/embark day for my ship) for an entire month billing period.  Customer Service reps have looked and determined that the data is being pushed to my phone late in the day as my ship sails out of Ft. Lauderdale.
I initially called Verizon on Nov 30th (after receiving messages on the 29th warning me that I was being charged higher than normal data roaming charges) and was told that I was indeed setting my phone up correctly to prevent Data Roaming charges and an investigation was started.  I was not told to change anything about the way my phone was set up, as long as in fact Data Roaming was disabled.  On December 4th my phone again had data pushed to it as the ship sailed away from Florida.  I called on the 5th of December and was told to turn ALL DATA off on my phone when getting on a ship.  By this time the entire 500 plus dollar amount of data had somehow been pushed to my phone.  (I have no idea what the heck it is...I didn't use it for anything).
Since this has happened I have called multiple customer service reps, all of whom have been very nice on the phone and promised to look into the matter and call me back.  No one has ever called back.  Twice supervisors have submitted my data roaming charges to be removed only to be turned down by someone saying the charges are correct and that data was sent to my phone and thus the charges are legitimate.  The point that I make over and over again is that I wasn't told by anyone from Verizon to turn ALL DATA off when going on a ship until December 5th, and further that my usage pattern with the phone during the past month is EXACTLY the same as it has been over the past two plus years when I WAS NOT being charged for data roaming.  By December 5th all the charges had already accrued so following directions to TURN ALL DATA OFF when on the ship didn't affect my outstanding charges.  (Further, I called Motorola and a tech there told me that having data roaming disabled on the phone should be sufficient to prevent ANY data from being received by the phone while it is roaming...this, he told me, is exactly why the phone has that option as well as the ability using a completely different button to turn on and off ALL data.
I did speak with another Customer Service rep today who told me that she had resolved the issue and that an adjustment would be made to my bill within the next 48 hours.  I asked her if this was contingent on approval from somewhere up the line and she said no, that she understood what I was saying and plead my case successfully to a supervisor and the adjustment was being made.
If the adjustment is in fact made I will repost here stating that.  If it isn't made then it will be the 6th phone call I have made to Customer Service that hasn't resulted in taking care of an issue that is in NO WAY my fault nor is it my responsibility in my opinion.  I set my phone up NOT to receive data while roaming and after there was a problem I followed the instructions that Verizon Customer Service personnel gave me to the letter.
Just to clarify, if this had happened the first month I had been on ships (over two years ago) when using Verizon or this phone then I would be more inclined to believe that I had made some mistake and just pay and turn the darned thing off carefully every time I walked up the gangway of the ship, but since I have had Data Roaming disabled the ENTIRE time I have owned the phone and have never been charged before then I feel I was justified in thinking that disabling Data Roaming on the phone would successfully.....well....disable the phones ability to receive DATA while ROAMING.

Thanks for that information.  I read a lot of posts here before I posted mine and based on what I have seen from others I tried to be as detailed as possible.  If I send anything to a VZW account I will leave my cell number and contact information as you suggest.  I'm still hopeful that the last customer service rep I talked to was honest and accurate when she told me the situation had been resolved in my favor.
I saw many posts from folks that seemed to be asking for adjustments to bills for mistakes that they themselves had made but I honestly don't think I'm in that postion.
On the other hand I am in the position of having to deal with Customer Service reps who have probably heard pretty much everything in the book from folks to try to get charges reduced, so upper level supervisors who can actually approve my bill adjustment are probably not even reading the entire text from my multiple phone calls and explanations,  thus simply declining the two supervisors who understood my situation and made the request for the billing adjustment.
The way it works (from what I can tell) is that the customer contact level person has a supervisor that they have to report to who then has to send any bill adjustment request (or perhaps any request over a certain amount) to another supervisor (one who is NOT ever in direct contact with customers) who makes the final call on whether or not a bill adjustment request goes through.
My main frustration comes from the fact that you can never request to speak with the last representative that you spoke with on the phone (according to all the reps I spoke with) and they can't even call each other...all of their communication is done via email.  This tends to ...from what I have experienced....create situations where a rep will tell a customer whatever they want to hear, knowing that there is almost NO CHANCE that they will ever have to speak to that customer again.  It also creates a situation where if the last rep didn't leave detailed or accurate notes then you have to go over every detail of your situation with the next rep you speak with.
My converstation with the Customer Service person who told me the issue was resolved took place yesterday morning so if things are actually taken care of then tomorrow should be the day the adjustment comes in at the latest.
Thanks again for your suggestion.  I wouldn't have known how to contact anyone directly from Verizon here without your post.

  • Another iPod locking up -- any chance of service from Apple?

Yesterday, it froze in the middle of a song at 5:21 (according to the clock display) and never came unfrozen. The battery died, I plugged it in when I got home, it charged overnight, and I was listening to a song today and it froze again. The advice of resetting it hasn't helped. When it's frozen, I tried four or five times to reset it, and it just won't do anything. It even stays lit up the whole time! When I first got my iPod, it could take literally hours for iTunes to recognize it in the source list, even though the computer knew it was there. I don't think that's related, but oh, well. And of course, a fourth-gen isn't really covered anymore in their service policy. I got it in Sept of 05, and already used my one free call. I haven't yet been able to get through to an actual person, but I'm planning on it.
    So, two questions:
    1) any clue what the problem with these iPods is?
    2) Any chance the people at Apple would be willing to replace it with a working, SERVICEABLE model?

And of course, a fourth-gen isn't really covered anymore in their service policy.
The warranty is for one year after purchase.
If you bought it new in Sep 05, its still covered.
already used my one free call. I haven't yet been able to get through to an actual person, but I'm planning on it.
If you have not spoken with an actual person, you have not used your one free support.
But that is only good for the first 90 days anyway. After 90 days, it'll cost.
Try the 5Rs on this page.

If this does not solve the problems, you can request service for your iPod at an Apple Retail store or here.

Is there any chance that Tab Grouping feature (similar to Opera 11) will appear in Firefox? Could be very helpful and convenient.

    Hi ThaPlaya,
I feel your pain. I am in charge of over 250 PCs and laptops. Flash Player stopped working for me after an update. I have been working on this issue non-stop since the middle of October, 2012. It's time-consuming, and even after applying the latest Flash update, it still doesn't work properly.
I am beyond frustrated! I have people calling me left and right saying that they can't access content. I have been using this site https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/ to try and do a browser plug-in check while in IE an dFirefox. Even after I update all plug-ins, Flash still works about half the time.
For instance, the principal of the middle and high school wanted to view an online magazine http://upfront.scholastic.com/issues/12_10_12, about 3 pages load on this site. The rest continue to say LOADING. When I right-click on a page and then left-click on ABOUT ADOBE 11.5.502.110, it seems I am using the most up-to-date version for IE and Firefox.
Students are trying to access sumdog.com and stmath.com, both run using Flash. STMath is now working a bit better because I allowed some exceptions in our internet content filtering appliance, and in our firewall, sumdog still works half the time.
If Adobe is going to update their browser plug-ins, they need to test and retest before giving the public access. This situation is causing me a ton of problems!
    Sorry to infiltrate your post...

  • $50 Unlimited--Domestic Roaming Charged or not?

On the website it says Domestic Roaming is .20 per minute on the $50 Unleashed Plan. So I contacted VZW online customer service and questioned how you would pay for that......and I was told there would not be any charge for domestic roaming on the $50 Unleashed Plan.
Here is the transcript of the conversation:
info: Please hold for a Verizon Wireless sales representative to assist you with your order.  Thank you for your patience.
info: You are now chatting with 'Morris'
Morris: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service.  May I help you with your order today?
    Jon: Hello,
Morris: Hello, how are you today?
Jon: I am looking at the $50 Unleashed program and had a question....it says under Price Info that Domestic Roaming is included.....then further ddown in the fine print it says Domestic Roaming is .20 per minute......how do you pay for Domestic Roaming?
Morris: Since verizon does not roam, there will be charge if any roaming does occur
Jon: So how are those charges added to the $50 plan?
Morris: excuse me, there will not be any charges
    Jon: So....no roaming charges?
    Morris: This is correct
Jon: So what does the fine print refer to when it says .20 per minute for Domestic Roaming?
Morris: This is if roaming occurs on a monthly plan, not prepaid plan.
Jon: OK.....but that is very confusing when you read the pricing info.
    Morris: I totally understand
Jon: Thanks for your help. Bye.
So who do I believe? The website or the Cust. Service Rep.?
Any one else have this issue?

Thanks again......it seems my understanding is correct that Domestic Roaming would refer to anywhere in US.  You correctly quoted the included features in the $50 Unleashed plan.....and in one place it does say Domestic Roaming included......however when you keep digging you get a different answer.
When you actually click to shop for the $50 Unleashed plan, look at the features list that shows up there:

    Ringback Tones – 99¢ per month & $1.99 per Ringback Tone/Year

Domestic Long Distance Included (airtime charges apply)
Domestic Roaming Rate is 20¢ Per Minute
International Text Messaging – 25¢ per message sent, messages received are same as calling plan
    International Roaming – Voice Calling
        – 69¢ per minute from Canada, Puerto Rico & U.S. Virgin Islands
        – 99¢per minute from Mexico
        – $1.99 per minute from Bermuda
    International Roaming – Text Messaging
        – 50¢ per message sent

Up to $35 activation fee may apply
Here is the link to that page: https://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=prepayItem&action=viewPrepayMonthlyPlans&tab=text
This is why I am still unsure about which part of the information on VZW website is correct!
If there's any light you can shed on this I would very much appreciate it.......I have sent a second request to VZW Customer Service and am waiting for their response.
    Thank you!

Will Mexico roaming charges be free since AT&T now owns the two largest cell providers in Mexico?

Hello @Chuck6182 At this time there is a charge to roam in Mexico, but I don't know if anything will change in the future. You can review our current roaming rates and plans HERE. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you,DmitriyMy understanding is that eventually you won't be roaming when in Mexico because you will be on the ATT network. This comes from ATT's news release when the Nextel acquisition was competed: AT&T plans to create the first-ever North American Mobile Service area, which will cover more than 400 million consumers and businesses in Mexico and the United States.
