Any definite answers to intermittent connection drops?

I've been having this problem off and on for several months- I've read lots of posts here with a wide range of different fix suggestions. Any help from somebody whose successfully troubleshot this?
My Gear: Broadband Cable Modem -to- Airport Extreme (802.11n) via ethernet.
Airport -to- iMac, a Windows laptop, and iPhone via WiFi.
My problem: All 3 clients have the same issue: The connection drops every 8 seconds. I'm connected to my network, all bars black- then I get dumped, "looking for networks" for a second or two, then it re-connects. This happens every 8 seconds like clockwork. Internet connection, e-mail, iDisk- everything affected.
What I know:
1. It is not the modem. Connected directly to the modem with ethernet, everything is fine.
2. Restarting airport does not help.
3. I don't think it's interference. The very first time I connected my Wi-Fi, I had this problem. I moved a cordless phone to the other side of the room, and the problem went away...for a few weeks. Then it came back. I did all the usual stuff, restarts, etc. nothing helped for a few days. Then suddenly the problem spontaneously went away. Been okay for about a month or so- now it's back with a vengeance.
I haven't changed service providers...BUT:
When I recently re- setup the airport while ethernet connected, Airport Utility told me that the modem did not have a valid IP address. I haven't changed anything. Modem is still the same.
How do I change the IP address? Can I do this manually? Would this cause signal drops every 8 seconds?
Judging by the posts on here- this seems to be a common problem. However, I haven't seen any common solutions. Help

3. I don't think it's interference"
I do. Every eight seconds" provides a strong hint that you are dealing with something like an RF radar sweep, or a nearby wireless security system that sends out a scanning signal about every eight seconds. A guy in the neighborhood with a ham radio that is misbehaving is a possibility as well.
I can't tell you how to actually locate the source of interference, but even if that were possible, whether it could be eliminated is another question.
I just spent a few days trying to help a friend who moved into a new apartment complex where it seems like everyone there is affected by intermittent drops on their wireless networks. When I got up on the roof, I noticed that the complex just happens to be located on a higher elevation area directly between two visible microwave transmission towers. That could also be a possibility in your case.

  • WRT54G Ver. 2: When modifying any of my wireless settings connection drops.

Using a WRT54G Ver. 2 router. When I modify any of my wireless settings my connection drops as soon as I save the settings. I've tried resetting the router and updating the firmware, neither have worked. I've had no problems with this up until now, it's worked perfectly before. I'm not sure what could be causing this problem.

When you change your wireless settings, any user who does not have the correct settings (SSID, encryption method, and key)  in their wireless adapter is supposed to be kicked off the network !   This is what wireless security is all about.
To fix this problem, when you update the router's settings, you should be using a computer that is wired to the router.

  • How to troubleshoot intermittent connection drops on Apple LAN (TimeCapsule   AirPorts)

Hi all, I have built out a wireless network for an office space. The network consists of a TimeCapsule acting as a router w/ dhcp and 3 Apple AirPorts acting as access points to the TC. I have gotten reports from users that there has been random connection drops (symptom: wireless internet stops working breaking AirPlay, etc.). Is there a way to review router logs to see what happened? Are there any proactive tools I can install to monitor connection drops?
I have Logmein Central and can make one of the computers a Logmein Pro client but the alerting on that is very weak, looking for something more. Please help!

  • Premiere 2014 CC Crashing - Please direct me to any definitive answers

So I'm having the problem that many seem to be having with Premiere 2014 CC continually, continually crashing.
    I'm wondering:
Has Adobe released any definitive statement as to exactly why this is happening, and exactly how to remedy the situation? I see a lot of random people saying "maybe try this...this might work for awhile...etc. etc. etc.", but in my search through the communities forums, I haven't seen anything official from Adobe. Granted I haven't had time to comb the forums because I'm on a GD deadline and I have to get what work I can done in the midst of this ridiculousness...

Installed Cuda at one point, have since tried to remove it from everywhere.
Application is Premiere Pro CC 2014 8.1
    Media is H.264 in Quicktime.
Crashes occur during editing. Most commonly what happens is the viewer will freeze up. I'll still be able to move the playhead back and forth, but the image won't move. At this point in 'Force quit applications', it will say that Premiere isn't responding, and I'll force quit.
Less common, but still regular, is that Premiere will crash on it's own, seemingly randomly, with the note "Sorry, Premiere has encountered a serious error etc."
I have almost the same setup but experience none of these issues.
One problem a lot of people had were unexpected behaviors when updating your project file from 8.0 to 8.1, like crashing. Tell me, did you update your project file midway through your project? If so, and it's not too late, is it possible to return to 8.0 to complete your project?
If that is not possible, you may want to try each of the following steps:
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
    Update any GPU drivers
    Trash preferences
Ensure Adobe folder preferences are set to read/write in all 3 locations.
    Delete media cache
    Delete preview files
    Remove plug-ins
If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
    Repair permissions
In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
    Disconnect any third party hardware
If you have a CUDA GPU, ensure that the Mercury Playback Engine is set to CUDA, not OpenCL
    Disable App Nap
    Reboot
Report back if anything here worked for you.

  • WRT54G Router Intermittent Connection Drop

To keep all of this in a nutshell, i have one WRT54G router wired to a PC and connected wirelessly to my laptop.
With the router in place, everything has been fine for over a year until last week when the router just couldnt connect to the internet. Upgrading the firmware helped a little bit, but the connection just kept on dropping ever minute (literally) and reconnecting by itself quickly. This basically meant that the connected IP address changed every single minute, making it hell for my instant messengers and downloads which disconnect every minute when the problem happens.
A direct connection without the router in place, from modem > internet is perfect, no drops whatsoever.
I went out and bought a BRAND NEW ROUTER but the same problem is happening. Ive tried everything but cant find an answer.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Guys, im reading articles on the relation between router problems and P2P programs. It does make sense, ive been disconnected because of my torrent downloads but it still doesnt make sense that the problem is the same with a BRAND NEW ROUTER.
And why doesnt the version 7 of the WRT54G have any firmware upgrades?
I'll post here if i find anything else.

  • Internet Connection Drop Outs when remote administ...

I did not want to trouble anyone here if I thought it unnecessary but now I feel that I do need some assistance so this warrants opening a new thread.
BT Infinity Option 2 customer with BT HH 4 and its separate modem - not hacked so cannot read any useful information or login to see what is going on and both BT and the manufacturer long ago removed the open source code of the modem.
I am quite confident now that these disconnections happen when a remote server/attacker attempts to gain access to my network. These can be from China, Iran and other places too. Sometimes Ministry of Defence? I don't know why I get these connection attempts and most of the time I see BT HH 4 does block these so why I get disconnected I have no idea?
I made a post in an old thread before opening this thread and said it was due to firmware upgrade but I misread the date! It was not updated since the 8th of May I think. These disconnections have been happening only this past 4-7 days with the most 4 days with intensity greater than the 3 before. I am not 100% certain it is caused by the remote administration that is blocked.
What happens when this takes place is the BT servers are then unreachable sometimes and I cannot regain a connection for up to 3 hours at a time, usually it is 5-10 mins max though. Without looking at my event log, any ideas?
I want to get different gear now and never wanted to use BT equipment anyway because I want greater control and options to configure. I would like to go with DD-WRT or OpenWRT Router with Integrated VDSL v2 modem. Anyone here that may suggest one that supports either of these open firmwares? Not so much the concern to prevent any security holes or backdoors but just as much if not more for versatility and configuration and just having control over my network. being able to do upgrades when I want and not when my ISP decides needs doing. And before you say BT do not have backdoors then why would they admit they can remote login to devices and storage contents with their pwerline adapters even. I remember reading a news article quoting BT as admiting this. Anyway, that is not my main concern here, as much as privacy and security is not a crime it is rather rare online. First I need to get to the root cause of this.
BT HH 4 is not reporting any DDOS attacks and even if it were I would not expect to experience any disconnection. I used to get tons of floods from DDOS attacks years ago when using Netgear routers and never exeprienced any downtime, but that was with another ISP. I don't detect any malware or anything like that and rarely download anything on this machine, I know web browsing can infect a system but I don't think that is it.
I want to go back to how I used to do things. Any help with this is appreciated. I will need to get my router login details because I was never given those when I singed up with BT Infinity Option 2. I don't even know what my BT email is but do believe there is a way to recover that under my account. **In the past we have had intermittent connection drops and loss of sync but this is not the same right now.
    Edit:
** Just to clarify that was before we upgraded to BT Infinity Opt 2. This is the first time any probs with this service since upgrade and that must be about 6 months or more now.

When running BT HH diagnostic it printed out that the username for login had changed and needed resetting or for me to enter my own in that I was NOT given! Anyway, when going to select manual reset it had not changed from default at all so I think this is just some default BT diagnostic that is false. I realise that other BT customers are affected by this with the BT HH5 but mine is HH4...my posting probably isn't as clear right now as I have not slept as much past few nights trying to figure this out. This is happening at different times of the day but more often during early hours.
So I am getting these WGET TLS error(s)
How do I enter in log excerpt from BT HH? Forums says my post exceeds 20K chars...

  • Home hub 3, broadband connection dropping

Hi, just a few days ago I recived my new home hub 3. The reason I wanted the upgrade from the hub 1 is because the broadband connection would drop and also the old hub would reset it self constantly.
The new hub is much better in terms of not resetting itself, if i try and watch something on 4od etc, youtube, it feels like any stress and the braodband connection drops, I had this on the old hub but it feels like its happening more now.
So much so I decided to make a paint version of my wiring so someone can maybe help me out.
    http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r173/guysy1110/routerproblem.png
Sorry the paint image came out much smaller than I wanted.
The main phone line is dowstairs in the lounge, its split into 2 using a 2 way splitter, one goes to the main phone which has a microfilter attached, the other plug leads up to the spare room and there a phone box (sorry not sure what its called) is in place, this box was split into another one because a long time ago there was a router that lived in the spare room (the split box is unused). Probably confusing people now, but the main box upstairs in the spare room is extended into my room and then a microfilter is used and then goes into the hub.
The extension cable is FAR too long, possibly 10m of cable wound up and tucked behind the drawers. Could this be a problem? I guess so.
So my main questions are, if both the router and main phone have new microfilters on, what other causes could keep my router dropping the broadband connection? the extension into my room is FAR too long possibly 10m which is wound up behind my drawers, first off im going to get a shorter cable.
Also the microfilter is closest to the hub, would it be better at the first source downstairs, or even in the spare room?
Any suggestions would be great. thanks.

Im reviving this thread, so far from the phone box upstairs Ive shortened the cable, It still goes into my room but now instead of having a ridiculous 15m amount of calbing unused Its a straight 3m from the other room to mine.
    This has slightly improoved things.
However the hub still suffers and drops the broadband connection when under "stress" when the phone rings it sometimes drops, and when downloading files it drops halfway through if the file is large which is a massive pain.
On the downstairs master socket I removed the facia and did a quiet line test on the inside socket, there was no noise. I used a corded phone. I wasnt sure if it mattered but I tested all other sockets using this method and none had any noise.
I phoned BT and was advised to take the hub closest to the master socket, but if i do this I have no wireless card in my PC so cannot connect, The obvious option is to get a wireless card but that will cost money. As will buying the power lines.
Any suggestions? I guess plugging the hub in downstairs and trying to connect to something is the best option.
    Any advice please?

  • Connection drops - MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming

    Hello there.
I've tried to search for a similar issue on the forums, and the interwebs in general, without any luck.
So recently I upgraded almost all the parts in my old computer, including the motherboard which is now a MSI z77A-GD65 gaming motherboard.
So, after my new setup, I'm having troubles with internet connection losses during gameplay.
The connection losses only lasts for around 5-10 seconds before I'm connected to the internet again, and it happens from every half an hour, to not at all, but it is an annoyance when playing games, as you can imagine.
I've been in contact with my internet provider every couple of days for the past week to see if it was a problem at their end. Although I got a new router, there doesn't seem to be a problem with the connection in general. They couldn't see anything on their end at least. And if I plug my laptop to the router via cable, I don't get the dropouts either.
So.. I'm faaairly certain it has something to do with the new hardware, more specifically, the motherboard. But I am not sure.
What I have done, is to check the connection, obviously.
I have also updated all drivers, using the LiveUpdate 5 tool that came with the motherboard (which was pretty intense since it updated the BIOS as well, and after that I couldn't boot until I reset the pins).
Anyways, drivers updated, couldn't find more recent ones.
I've checked if there has been a problem with the servers at the game company of the game I am playing, not the issue either.
Also, the yellow "warning triangle" at the connection icon in the taskbar is also showing for the brief moment of 5-10 seconds (not enough to do a troubleshoot)
I didn't have any problems with connection drops with my old computer, even at 8-9 hour gaming sessions.
Note that there doesn't seem to be any pattern in when the connection drops, as it can be from every half hour, to not at all during an evening of gaming. And there is no connection between what I am currently doing in the games I play, when the connection drops.
I hope you can help me out, because I have no clue at this point.
    /thanks

The directions are posted with the bios. It is very easy.

  • Intermittent Wireless Connection, Dropping Wireless Connection

I am asking this in hopes of finding at least some way to diagnose my problem and hopefully eventually solving it. My wireless connection currently drops at varying amounts of time. Sometimes I can go 20mins others merely 5mins. The Airport reads that I am still connected and have a strong connection but when I try to navigate to a page with the browser (either firefox or safari) it merely times out after trying to load the page for up to a few minutes. I have changed the channel and frequency of my router (first router I tried was a Trendnet TEW-432BRP) and I have no cordless phones or other possible wireless obstructions. (I do have a very very infrequently used microwave but being that it's on the other side of the house and I can be sitting next to the router I doubt this is the culprit)
Then I tried changing routers to a Belkin N1 Vision router. Same issues. Additionaly worth noting all other PC's and linux machines on my network (about 4-5 other computers) all work just fine with out dropping their connections (with both routers).
Then I brought my original machine (a white macbook less than a year old) into the apple store, thinking at this point it was a hardware problem with my machine. They the replaced the airport card twice and the logicboard once. Eventually decideing that they should just replace the whole machine. Now with my new unibody I thought I had finally illeviated the problem but now I am having the same issues with an intermittent connection again.
If I turn off the Airport card and turn it back on again usually it will reconnect and allow me to browse again. But not always. The odd part is that generally when using another program that accesses the net the connection does not seem to be interrupted (such as with bit torrent). Very odd.
Anyway I tried using my computer at a friends house with the same trendnet router (his router but same model) and still the connection issues persist. Any ideas on what I can do or try to at least even begin to understand why this is happening would be helpful. I want very much to get to the bottom of this. Thanks for your help.

You didn't get the Apple Store to replace a white MacBook with a unibody?!
Anyhow - the connection problems could easily relate to an incompatibility between OS X and the router in question. Or it could simply be a setting on the router that isn't working well. To assist in the diagnosis... can you please supply:
    1) The security mode of the router? (WEP or WPA/WPA2 and AES or TKIP).
    2) The network mode (G/N)?
    3) The signal strength as reported by Airport (RSSI)
You can get most of this information (all except the security mode) by holding the option key down whilst clicking on the Airport icon in Finder. For the security setting you can go to your routers configuration screen (or you can get it from the command line).
    Cheers,
    Rodney

I understand that the OP failed to do research. But then, I wasn't replying to the OP. I was replying to Chris. I have Verizon. I can talk and use data at the same time with my Droid Maxx. Therefore, the problem is not just with the network. It would be technically possible for an iPhone to do that on Verizon/Sprint if Apple had chosen to use a different chip, such as the kind other phone manufacturers have elected to use.
Of course, this is probably all irrelevant to the OP's issue. It was merely a point of clarification, especially for those people who are used to being able to use both voice and data at the same time on Verizon. When they switch to an iPhone, they are often surprized at the limitation.
    Best of luck.

Look at this technical specs document, your system should be fine with the possible exception of Color.
As for managing your preference files, use Digital Rebellion's tool.

    Hi,
A problem has started today, which I suspect is caused by the line.
When the phone is answered, the internet connection is lost and the router (BT Home Hub 5 - Type A) starts flashing orange and continues to do this until the call ends then after a few minutes a connection is restored.
Also, when the phone is in use, there is crackling on the line.

Have you tried the quiet line test dial 17070 option 2 you should hear no noise if you can hear noise then it needs reporting to BT faults on 151 with no mention of broadband in the call

  • BT Infinity Connection Dropping but BT refuse to a...

    Hi,
So in September we got BT Infinity. It was a hassle and handled terribly by BT customer service but we eventually got it. It's been working fine for around five months but within the last few weeks we have been having connection issues.
Over Easter I have spent over 10 hours on the phone to BT via my landline and mobile trying to get a solution, but all I have got is a repeated denial of my problems.
On the 27th March I called BT to report that our connection had been repeatedly dropping over the past few weeks and a fault was opened. I was told I would be updated but no-one called back despite promises they would do.
I called BT on the 28th March to follow up my issues but was met with an advisor who lacked knowledge in the issue and simply told me to continue monitoring my connection.
I called BT on the 3rd April as there had been no improvement in my connection, which is dropping multiple times per day, and on this day 7 times. After going through the same repetitive questioning session about how I connect to the internet, a deep line test was run, and it was decisively concluded that there was a fault with the line within BT's retail servers. I was told this would be followed up and promised a call back on the 4th April.
After I had not received a call back on the 4th April within the time allocated to me, I called BT where I was met with an awfully rude woman who had no interest in helping me and went on to suggest what I was saying was an outright lie and she categorically stated there had been no call back booked despite me having the text in front of me which confirmed it.
After being told to 'continue monitoring my line', a slightly repetitive phrase favoured by BT Customer Service, I called back as instructed on the 8th April. Again, I went through a repetitive process before finally making some sort of progress and being sent a new home hub.
My new home hub arrived on the 11th April and made no difference to my problem. I therefore called BT and spoke to an advisor who told me he could only assume the Home Hub was sent in error, as he was absolutely adamant it would make absolutely no difference to my situation. I was told to 'continue monitoring my connection' over the next few days but before he ended the call I asked him a number of questions, none of which were adequately answered.
Why is our connection dropping? Rather than giving me an explanation as to why it is dropping, he told me that we are lucky it only drops a few times a day! He said 'everyone in the world suffers from a connection which drops multiple times per day' and that 'there is absolutely nothing we can do because there is no problem'. He told me about rate-adaptive lines, which according to him 'are used by every household in the world' and that these lines 'inevitably drop out up to five times a day, which is normal and acceptable'.
So how many times can it drop before it's considered a fault? The basic answer I received is that there is no limit! It doesn't matter how many times it drops, it absolutely normal! Only if it drops '20-30+ times per day' is it considered a problem worth solving to BT.
Why do you never call back (in particular, why did no-one call back on the 4th April, and why did an advisor accuse me of lying about the call back)? They said that when the issue is escalated from Level 1 to Level 2, it is impossible to see any contact between the customer and Level 1, so when the call back wasn't arranged as it should've been, there was no way BT could've known. He apologised for this and the way I was treated by his colleague.
Why was a fault reported on the 3rd April? Why have I not been updated since? Simple answer from BT. There probably was no fault, that was probably also incorrectly opened. Note the key word probably. The advisor I talked to said he had no idea what happened in any of my previous calls and that there was no way he could find out why the fault was opened, or listen to the call (despite all calls being recorded). He said it was impossible for Level 2 to hear the content of any calls made with Level 1 and that it was 'impossible for an advisor to take notes for a call lasting more than half an hour'.
I recieved a call back today on my mobile where I was told just to continue monitoring the fault. However I was also told, again, quite categorically, that there is nothing wrong and that he would happily send an engineer in three days but that 'he would be able to do absolutely nothing. It would be a waste of time'. The advisor also refused to give any details on how much this would cost and was desperate to end the call saying 'goodbye' despite me being mid sentence multiple times.
I have now been told to 'continue monitoring my connection' and await another call back on Friday, by which point I will have wasted many more hours on the phone to BT.
Your customer service is disgusting. Your lack of compassion and understanding is disgusting. The way you totally mislead customers is disgusting.
And now for my top BT Operator quotes (or near quotes, as obviously no-one has any idea what was said in these calls, not even BT!):
"If your temperature raised to 100 degrees celcius but then went back to normal, there would be no problem, it's the same with broadband"
"Everyone in the world has a rate-adaptive line and everyone in the world should expect their line to drop"
"If your line only drops 5 or 6 times a day there is no problem, you obviously should've known this before you signed up for Infinity"
"There definitely is a fault.... there definitely isn't a fault" - the trademark conclusiveness of BT
"We can limit the speed on the phone line, but it would have to be to 1mb" - this is despite absolutely contradictory help published by BT
But despite these humorous moments, I have wasted a huge amount of time on the phone to BT.
I have one simple demand. Stop the broadband from dropping multiple times per day. If you cannot do this, let us leave, as you are not meeting your contractual obligations and therefore we shouldn't have to either.
And please... don't apologise for your colleague not calling back in the first minute of the phone call and then not call back.

    Hi Bryan,
Like yourself and many, many other people who come to these forums - I have been experiencing the same problems. Constant disconnections, and recently, speed dropping to 4Mb in the Evenings (I'm supposed to be getting 74Mb).
It's ridiculous with how many people are experiencing these problems and BT are blatently ignoring it. To add insult to injury, this was posted in February. A statement from BT basically saying "Well you're all gonna be having problems, but it's on you."
Don't fret though, the moderators, and other people from the community can be fantastic help.
Purchasing an Openreach modem, suggested by ray_dorset, I'll still be awaiting for the Huawei 612, V3b modem to arrive and hoping this will fix the drops in speed. I currently have an ECI modem fitted in, which has stopped the disconnects, but have not stopped the speed drops.
For anyone reading this who is unfamiliar with modems as I was:
As far as I know, there's currently two types of Openreach Modems. Every exchange is built with a certain "chipset" which will work best with these modems (explaining in simplistic terms and I could be very wrong, so I am happy to be corrected.)
    The Two Openreach Modems:
    Huawei 614
    ECI
From the advice I have been given by the moderators, if you're new to BT Infinity, then your exchange may have only recently been built, which is then most likely to have a chipset which will work better with Huawei modems. I'm about to find out this by next week.
If, in some horrible scenario it doesn't work and the speed is still constantly dropping, then you may need to fork out and purchase a new router (BUT KEEP THE MODEM). Many people have said their internet has been fixed by doing this.
One of the things I did find pretty hillarious however, is that I did call up BT the other night due to having terrible connections. He told me to take out my modem and just use the home hub 5. He then kept telling me to change a few settings on the HH5 and run a speedtest. Every, single, time we changed something - the speed would get lower and lower, followed by an "Uhhh, monitor your speed over the course of this week and then we'll call you back."
I'm sorry, but BT customer service have no idea how to fix this, so don't waste your time ringing them. I genuinely feel bad for them too, they have to put up with our **bleep** while the engineers at BT who work on the firmware for the HH5 can't be arsed to try and fix it any further.
Seriously, mate - just try the steps above, come to the forums if you need help because you're more than likely to get a better answer. I know it sucks not being able to call up BT because they're just going to give you a bunch of BS, but if everyone who had a complaint on this forum worked for BT tech support, maybe there'd be more satisfied customers.
