On to the topic. Why would Live Trace be limited? I can imagine system performance would be affected by more colors, but shouldn't that be left up to the user whether they want to deal with it?
Seems like the tracings could be even more photo realistic if they allowed more colors.

They have to keep it to 256 colors because they are confusing the mathematics with segmentation and trying to do them at the same time. They need to color segment first, then auto trace.
We have a color segmentation program, Pac-n-Zoom Color (http://www.Accelerated-IO.com), that if used in front of programs such as Illustrator and CorelDraw should allow them to convert (at up to ~16,700 colors) color photographs, video frames, or any other graphics into vector that can be animated, re-scaled, or rendered in some other way.
These drawing programs all have auto tracers, but they limit the color to 256 which damages the detail as you well know. They limit the colors because they don't have true color segmentation.
If you use Pac-n-Zoom Color to segment before the auto trace, you can automatically color trace (up to ~16,700 colors) photos and video right into an animation engine (e.g., Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max) which dramatically saves time, cuts cost, and improves quality, but there is a significant issue. Most auto tracers, as you know, can only trace at 256 colors. It would only take a weeks worth of programming to increase it.
Someone please! Increase the memory to 16 million colors.

Well done getting the wireless network secured.
You have to precede the (hex) password with a '$' in Mac OS, to tell the Internet Connect dialog box that you are keying a hex password (rather than ASCII). This is because the Mac has detected that the network is WEP protected, and leaves it to you to decide how you want to key the password.
As an alternative, in Internet Connect (or from the AirPort icon menu), you can elect to join an "Other" network. If you select your network again, it'll come up with "WEP Password" as the option of Wireless Security. You can change this to "WEP 40/128-bit hex" and then not have to precede your password with the '$'.
Alternatively, you could tell us the make and model of your wireless router and we can tell you how to set, and use an ASCII password. From your 10-character hex password, we can see that you're using 40/64-bit WEP. Non-Apple routers can be a bit fussy when using ASCII passwords with 40-bit WEP (don't worry, this is also true for Windows PC's using 40-bit WEP too), but we can talk you through it.
As a final alternative, as you have such a whizzy Mac, as long as your wireless router supports it, you could use WPA security, and never have to worry about ASCII / hex / '$', etc. Older Macs (particularly original AirPort cards - not AirPort Extreme - and OS9) were limited to 40-bit WEP.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. My purpose for copying to a CD or DVD is so that I can make copies and send to friends and relatives. What is the best way to get these files on a CD/DVD with the right codecs?
The easiest thing to do is to simply tell your friends and relatives to copy the files to their local hard drive before playing them. Your basic problem is that data discs have a limited real time transfer rate. Since you say VLC plays the files fine, I might suspect its player is likely buffering the data while the QT 7 Player is not.
Data discs made for playback directly from the CD or DVD are normally encoded using MPEG-4/AVC (H.264) video with AAC audio. This is a modern codec which has specific settings to re-package the data (i.e., must be encoded using the multipass option and then select the "optimize for CD/DVD" option).

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with a visit to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

2. Data Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. SyncTwoFolders
6. Synk Pro
7. Synk Standard
8. Tri-Backup

Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

Telephone Numbers in Mobile/Tablet view become transparent? Any Idea why?

I'm creating the mobile and tablet version of a site and I've notice the telephone number on the mobile version has become transparent. In the design it is clearly black text. I uploaded the design to the live site and it goes white out (on a white browser fill) yet the text is there because I can still touch the number and the iPhone's call option pops up.

The text is changing to a link automatically on a phone and tablet. Thats normal.
Go into site settings and create a new link style and set it to something other than your background color. And then apply the style to the text.

Mail, any ideas why ? old attachment show paperclip but none since Lion installed.

I moved from Microsoft's feature-rich Entourage mail recently to bring my email into the house of Apple to get more Apple mobile stuff like iPhone --- and synchronise it all.
But since coming to Mail I have read so much that says Apple Mail is so rudimentary, and has so many problems including this and many others. And they reach back into Snow Leopard.
Apple Mail is such a poor relative of all the other Apple products it seems like it is in anohter time zone.
I hope Apple realise that some people (or increasing numbers maybe) will migrate to Apple Mail just to pick up synchroniicity off iCloud, for their laptop and iPhone. so they can service their email on the move away from the desk.
Also I hope they realise that a significant part of their market is serious professional people who rely on Apple Mail as infrastructure which is as important a electricity, gas, and the water. We can't live out here without email any more. Why migrate to a flaky neglected utility?
How can Apple let these problems lie for year after year and just concentrate on flogging music and video to kids(and, well, me occasionally).
In the next year I will have to decide whether remaining loyal to Apple (since 1988) is the way to keep going, or to buy the Google Android product, go Gmail and use their cloud co-ordination.

Is the second Extreme configured to "extend" the network created by the first? If so its position must be such that it has a strong wireless connection to the first Extreme. If it is at the limits of the first one's wireless range its connection will be tenuous. Place them closer together and determine if that makes a difference.

You have to do it app wise, which means that the icon won't show up in settings, but you will be able to move files from your local drive to iCloud via the Numbers app (move... > choose the iCloud option).
It requires that you set up the same iCloud account on all your devices and that you have the latest version of Numbers on all your devices as well.
