Any real reason for logical partitioning over physical?

Hi!
I have seen a number of scenarios where SAP BI (assuming BI 7.0 for the rest of the discussion), running in high volume scenarios, have been cluttered by a lot of logically partitioned cubes joined by multi providers....
Obviously the disadvantage of using logical partitions is that it increases maintenance efforts: you need a new update rule for each logical partition (cube) , then you need to manually add/delte cubes from the multiprovider, filtering data in the update rules to reach the correct cube based on time characteristic etc etc...
I have seen one clear advantage which is the parallelization of queries run against a multiprovider - assuming you wan't to all underlying cubes ... but are there any other advantages which overcome the mainenance overhead?
For me it feels like using physical database partitions in the same cube would be the correct decision in 90% of the cases. It seems to me that the underlying RDBMS should be able to handle itself to:
1) Parallellize a query over several physical partitions if needed.
2) Be smart enough to only query the needed partition if the query is restricted based on the partitioning characteristic.
Please correct me anyone? - When is logical partitions really motivated?
Best regards,
Christian

Hi,
This is a great question. Generally it is very difficult to understand the real motivation for the physical partioning - multiple cubes. You are right, it definitely increases the maintenance overhead. And you have already pointed out both the advantages and disadvantages.
Physical Partitioning is more useful where we have huge amounts of data. Imagine a cube with 3 or 4 GB of data - which are not usual - but possible.  The Table Partioning is useful with small infocubes, less than 1 GB. With bigger Infocubes, Table level partitioning may not provide the required level of performance. If we have too many small partitions, that would also reduce the perfomance. If we have too few  partitions, the query performance will not be as much as we want. In this scenario, we can use Physical partitioning (Multiple Cubes) combined with Table Level Partitioning to achieve the required performance levels. On top, we can even think of using Aggregates for further betterment of the performance.
While all the above seems to be relevant for older versions of BW (upto 3.5), BI 7.0 has the BIA (BI Accelerator), which works on the Blade Server with all the data cached directly on the main memory. I am not sure how much this would impact the data modeling - I have not started working on the BIA as yet.

  • Any free samples for Logic?

Hello all! I'm pretty new to logic...switched from Pro Tools and Reason (smart move, as logic is pretty bomb!) However, there were several websites dedicated to trading and downloading Reason samples for free, such as sitar wav. files and drum loops, etc. Is there any such site for logic users? Or, if the files are also compatible with Logic, how do you incorporate them into the sampler? Thanks a million!

Shouldn't there be more than that?

Any technical reason for iPhone 4 not to have mirrorring feature? It does support YouTube , photo slide show.

Airplay mirroring requires an h.264 encoder in hardware. iPhone before the 4s and macs before mid 2011 don't have this hardware, so it won't work.

  • 0IC_C03 related Inventory Process - Logical Partitioning (Vs) Physical Part

    Hello Everyone,
After going through multiple postings throughout the form and documentation from SAP, it states that the 0IC_C03 InfoCube when used with Non Cumulative keyfigures is not recommended to be partitioned logically by physical year/calendar year as the query will read all the data sets due to the stock marker logic.
    In our specific scenario,
    1. After the InfoCube (0IC_C03) was enhanced with additional characterisitcs such as Doc Number, Movement type and so on due to business requirements I was not able to actually use the Non Cumulative Keyfigures as they were not populated within the report.
    2. So, we decided not to use the Non Cumulative keyfigures but rather create two cumulative keyfigures (Issue Stock Quantity - Receipt Stock Quantity) and (Issue Valuated Stock Value - Receipt Valuated Stock Value) and both of these are available in the InfoCube and are calculated during the update process.
These two keyfigures are cumulative with exception aggregation of LAST based on 0CALDAY.
    The question is,
Since we are not using the actual Non Cumulative Keyfigures (even though we are not using these, we still have the stock marker updated and data compressed based on this along with Validity table defined) can we do logical partitioning on the InfoCube based on Calendar year.
    Thanks....

    Hello Elango,
    Appreciate your response.
First of..I do understand the difference between logical and physical partitioning and the question is not about joining them together.
I am sorry, if others cannot understand the detailed issue posted. My apologies was a part of polite gesture, and please do respond back with proper precise answer if you think you did actually understand the question....
The question here is about how I can leverage the performance and administrative performance by logically breakingdown the data.
The issues due to which I am trying to look into different aspects of logical partitioning are:
    1. If I do logical partitioning by Plant due to the stock marker logic then I cannot do archiving as a Plant and its related data cannot be archived by time characteristic as the partitioning is not done by time characteristic.
    2. The reason I would have to have document number and movement type in the InfoCube is due to the kind of reporting users perform.
We have a third party system whose data needs to be reconciled to the data in the plants and storage locations.
And in order to do so, the first step users would be running the report is plant, storage location and sku. From here on for the storage locations which have balance they would like to drill down on to the document number and movement type to see what the actual activity is.
So, to support this requirement I would have to have the above characterisitcs in the InfoCube.
The question again is,.....what is the exact list of issues I would be having doing the logical partitioning by time characteristic.
Once again, even though the non cumulative keyfigures are available in the InfoCube we are not using them for any reporting purpose....so please keep that in consideration while replying back.
    Thanks
    Dharma.

Oh, ok then, that makes sense ... I don't know the reason to align partitions to cylinders but there must be a good reason, although even if they are not aligned it shouldn't be a big problem (at least gparted allows you to create unaligned partitions).
Personally gparted is not my first choice when dealing with partitions, it already scared me _big time_ and even if linux doesn't complain about partitions not being in the order they are on disk some programs complain about that (and gparted does make a mess out of that) and even refuse to do anything before they fix that (partition magic for example, and I've never lost any data or even got scared when using it).
Lately I have been doing it like this, create the partitions with cfdisk which leaves everything in a way no program complains, then I format the partitions with mkfs.whatever or I use gparted just to format the partitions, I've never had problems when doing things like that.
The last time I've used gparted to resize partitions things went well but on another occasion it did make a huge mess out of the partition layout (there were ntfs partitions involved when it went wrong, and only ext3 when all went well) leaving me with a problem similar to what you have now, luckily testdisk came to the rescue but I reckon I was just lucky that time.
I've learned my lesson, _always_ make backups or copy things to another disk, besides being probably faster (as gparted does a ton of checks) it is a lot safer and if you have really important stuff on your hard disk you can't afford to be relying on the chance of not loosing it in the process.

  • Any special reason for this behavior...?

Is there any special reason why the Process Black shows in ink separation list, when the only black i have is an an object with applied shadow in a hidden and unprintable layer and no other object has black as fill or stroke in any of the visible layers? Thanks for any tips ...

The separations preview is just what it implies - an overview of the inks used in the doc, based on the assumption that the document is going to be printed at some point using a standard process. It doesn't matter, whether the objects are invisible, non-printable or what else. AI has no concept of these things. And you can't print anything without any kind of ink, can you? I really don't see why you think it's a problem.
    Indeed?
(When in doubt, pound the pulpit.)
The document is empty except for four squares.
    The blue is process global.
    The orange is process non-global.
    The green is spot.
    The black is 100%K.
The black is on its own layer.
The green is on its own layer.
The blue and orange are on the same layer.
Screenshots are from the Output tab of the Print dialog. Mode is Separations. Printer is Adobe PDF.
    All Layer visibility on:
Layer containing the green spot color visibility off. Note that the green sep will not print:
Layers containing the green and the black visibility off:
Layer containing the black is off.
The only difference here is that a 40% K drop shadow has been applied to the black path:
The only difference here is that the drop shadow has been removed from the black path:
Clearly, AI does have some "concept about these things." But AI's "concept" about this--like so many other things--is rather illogical.

  • Are  there any technologies avialibe for media transmission over the web?

    Hello everyone!
My task is to capture and transmit video and audio information over the Internet. JMF works well on handling media but I also have to embed it somehow on the web page.I don't want to use applets .
I would also like to know about web technologies that have implementations for media steaming over the Internet.
    Thanks!

Hi, I am interesting on this topic too. I'd like create a web tv so I have thought to use JMF to learn source from camera and a Flash player for client side, so it can easily wrapped in website.
To convert video/audio flow to flv I'm thinking to use JAVE (Java Audio Video Encoder) but I don't know if it solves my problem...
At the least, I have seen even for Red5, that is a open source flash server...
But now I don't know what is the best way... XD I am confused XD

  • IOH Temp - Obsession, Over Reaction, Or A Real Reason For Concern

Many of us have concerns over what is an acceptable IOH temp at idle & full load. Please, no rants, tangents, or bashing. If you feel your temp is too high, lets keep everything constructive, & let's all work together to get it fixed. To date, we have two types of boards to consider, those with push pins, & the others with machine screws. A simple test to see if your IOH temp may benefit from some form of a mod, a gentle but firm downward pressure on the IOH heatsink after it is fully warmed up, it may take 15 seconds or so before any reaction, but does the temp start to decrease? By how much? If around 10c reduction, increasing the downward pressure by hardware modification may be an option.
Before taking this too far, what 'is' too hot? If we can believe the manufacturer of the chip, 100c is it's max. limit. For everyday use at full sustained load, from what I can gather from Intel, 95c Tcontrol appears to be the 'magic' upper limit without any possible long term degradation or data corruption. Anything at or below that, as per them (meaning Intel), should have no effect on the chip's lifespan. The jury is still out, & only time will tell. Details can be obtained by reading the Intel X58 Express Chipset Thermal and Mechanical Design Guide of March 2009.
For those that wish to take further steps to reduce their IOH temps, these existing threads have a 'lot' of useful information on how to, what with, & where it can be found.

Funny you should ask... At about the same time that the Xserve was discontinued, we also lost our channel rep of nearly 14 years. Right now we are not sure who our rep is. I have however, sent this to as many people in Apple that I could think of. And I plan on continuing to reach out to as many as possible.
The sad reality is that this decision is impacting customer deployments and the future of customer installations. Apple strives for market share and loves to tout those numbers. But the numbers we fought for over these last eight years are going to disappear.
As much as this impacts our business, we are making up for it in enterprise deployment of systems. We will survive and lead in our geographic area. I do not fear that. But OS X Server is a UNIX server and with it has come all of the benefits of a UNIX system, including legitimacy in a data center. The Intel Xserve cemented this reality because of its hardware configuration and form factor. Yes, we have G4 and G5s still in service. But those are mostly in all Mac shops that understand the benefits and can work around the buzz word limitations. But fortune 100/500 IT departments did not really get on board until the release of the Intel server.
Still beating the drum to raise awareness. Spread the word and talk to your Apple reps.
Also, ask about the direction that Apple's Enterprise team is going. If the news I hear is correct, then our fears about all things pro and enterprise going away are likely true.

  • Any real answers for these?

WIFI decides to just always drop. Never had an issue with data when I had 4GB plan. I never went over 1/2gb because I am always around WIFI and I drop to 1gb plan and all of a sudden every month I am using 90%+ of my plan.
Battery display - I hate when my phone shuts off and when I plug it in I have 40% battery left and then can unplug it and it will last until it is below 10%. I have powered it down to recalibrate it and it hardly changes anything. It doesn't happen all the time but it is so annoying when I am out and don't have a way to plug it in and it dies and then I get home plug it in and have over 30% battery left and can unplug it and it stays on for another couple hours.
Why are there so many problems with the 5 and they are just going to roll out the 6 and give up on everyone with the 5. I was planning on buying the 6 but hate that I know in a year after the 6 comes out there will be a 6s and a 6c or whatever else they want to add to the end of it but I just wish they would make sure they worked before releasing them and letting us be the beta tester. We get screwed for paying the top dollar to get the phones first and I am getting sick of it.

Don't know why you have used such huge data.
I own two of the 5S iphones and I use 25 MB or KB but no GB.
    on each device.
I have it on WiFi almost 90% of the time, and my battery lasts over a day on each. (Do have a cord to charge if need be)
I guess it is how you keep your device on and how apps update.
    http://www.apple.com/support
There may be some settings etc. you can change to improve the device.
    Good Luck

  • The real reason for the iTunes update

There was nothing wrong with iTunes actually - they just wanted to torture Aperture users running Software Update to check for Aperture 1.5...
"Look - an update! Oh, that update..."

I'm in the same boat. I've updated to 10.4.8, updated to Aperture 1.5, even have all the previews. I want to sych my iPod to a few Aperture albums. The iTunes Photo section lets me choose either iPhoto or Aperture. The "synch with all" button is checked (but showing 0 photos in parents), and the "sych with album" is greyed out. It doesn't appear to be seeing my Aperture library (if that's an issue), which resides on an external drive.
I don't know what the tricks are to get this jump started. I'm hoping that when everything works, I can just select Aperture albums like I select playlists with music.
Has anyone succeeded with this yet?
