ANY TRICKS?: Wireless Network Extension

Calling Apple wireless networking GURUS:
I have a wireless network being broadcast from Airport Timecapsule "ALFRED" and set as a non-broadcast (invisible) network.
I have another older Airport Timecapsule "BRUCE" set on "extend wireless", and I have manually input "ALFRED" and its password.
BRUCE seems not to be able to find ALFRED.  Is this because it is not being actively broadcast as a visible network?  When I do a regular visible network setup like this it seems to work.
What am I missing? Any tips?
Thanks,
Rich

Performance is "iffy" with a hidden network in my experience with Apple routers, so best to run things normally. iPhone and iPads tend to have problems with "hidden" networks as well.
As you know, even if you "hide" your network, anyone who wants to see your network can do so very easily in seconds using any number of free utilities available on the Internet, so there isn't any security value in "hiding"' your network anyway.
True, it might keep the retired couple next door from seeing the name of your network, but they are probably not the types of folks that you need to worry about.
That unmarked van....a few houses down the street....been there for the last 4-5 hours.....you may need to worry about.
I assume that you do not use your personal name for your wireless network. If you do, it might be a good idea to change that to something vague or random that would not identify you.

  • HT4259 How do I set up an Airport Extreme Base Station (v. 7.6.1) to allow wireless network extension?

I have an Airport Extreme Base station (purchased in 2009) and an Airport Express base station (purchased in 2011 - the model that plugs directly into the electrical outlet) (both version 7.6.1 according to the Airport Utility info).  I want to use the Airport Express to extend my wireless network.  Using Airport utility setup I have a software option on the Airport Express to set it up to extend the network but I do not have an option on the Airport Extreme wireless setup screen that I can check to allow my wireless network to be extended.
All of the documentation I can find on Apple Support states that I should have an option I can check to allow the wireless network to be extended while in the wireles setup section for the Airport Extreme in Airport Utility; but, that check option isn't there.  Is this a case of my Airport Extreme base station being too old to offer that option?  Incidentally, when I try to select the extend wireless network option on the Airport Express from the Airport Utility wireless setup menu I get an error message (no details - just an error message).  The same Airport Express sets up fine if I select join a network (not what I want to do).  Am I just dealing with outdated equipment or does anyone have a suggestion?  Thanks.

Close AirPort Utility if it is open.
Temporarily, move the Express to the same general area as your AirPort Extreme and power it up and wait a minute.
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 9-10 seconds and then release. Give the Express a full minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear
Click on AirPort Express just below that and AirPort Utility will automatically open
Wait a minute while AirPort Utility analyzes the network and announces that the Express will be configured to "Extend" the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait another minute to allow the configuration to occur.
When you see the Setup Complete message, click Done.
Now move the Express to a location that is approximately half the distance from the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage
Power up the Express and you are all set.  Trash those old instructions.

  • Wireless Network Extension

I'm trying to extend my Airport network with a Netgear Range Extender ... Will this work?  How to setup?

I'm trying to extend my Airport network with a Netgear Range Extender
If you are trying to do this using wireless only.....Apple appears to use a proprietary technology to "extend" a wireless network....that only works with other Apple routers.
As far as we know, devices from other manufacturers are not compatible for this purpose, so it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to make this work.
If you are able to make this work, please post back with the model number of your Netgear Range Extender so that we can note that fact.
If you plan to connect the Netgear product using a wired Ethernet cable, you should be able to "extend" the network that way.

  • Apple TV(3) No longer connecting/locating ANY wireless networks

    Hi all,
I recently purchased a Motorola modem and replaced it with a rented one form comcast, and for some reason my Apple TV is no longer able to connect to either my network (via an airport express and Comcast connection) or locate any other wireless networks in our area. I live in an apartment complex, so it should be able to see quite a few.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    1. Restart Apple TV
    2. Reset (not restore) Apple TV
    3. Reset airport router
    4. Reset modem
    5. Un-plug/re-plug coax (internet) cable from the wall
    6. Relocate the Apple TV within my electronics set-up
I don't have an extra Ethernet port on my modem, so I have yet to try hard wiring the Apple TV as it would require disconnecting the Internet.
    Any ideas???

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
There has been a recall of a small number of Apple TV 3 units that are unable to detect wifi. Please provide the 3rd and 4th characters of your serial number, as well as the last 4 characters, I’ll check if it is on the recall list for you.
Your serial number can be found at settings > general > about, if you can access it, or on the box or the device itself (quite small).
Alternatively you can contact an authorised reseller or you can also contact your nearest official retail store to check for qualifying models. You should note that all Apple TV models are not eligible for the replacement.

  • Setting up a private wireless network to share a website

Hi, I have what I thought was a simple problem but after wandering through google for the past 3 days I can't find a canned solution or a reference I can understand.
This is what I would like to do - share a website on my netbook wirelessly with other machines in my office. Thats it, simple eh ?
OK, seriously, here is some background info, the basic environment and what I would like to do.
    1) I do not have admin rights to my office workstation so I can't realistically trial commercial grade software or carry out some basic processing
    2) I have repurposed a personal netbook running Windows Ultimate and SQL Server 2008 R2 Express as a secondary workstation so I do my work and possibly trial some reporting software
    3) I have IIS running on the netbook
    4) The reporting software I want to trial I have used before at another contract but I can't show it here because of 1) above, it is web-browser based zero-client solution
so all I need to do locally is to browse to a website created as part of the software install
    5) I'd like to install the software on the netbook and then share its main website with other workstations wirelessly within the office so that other people can simply browse to the
website on the netbook and they can also assess its usefulness to the business
    6) I do not want to use any existing wireless networks within the office
    7) Potentially multiple users so prefer not to rdp into netbook
    8) I would prefer not to have to install any additional software but I can onto the netbook if required
    9) Would like to have it accessible by other devices, iPad, iPhone etc, if they can connect to the published wireless network and browse to the main page this should be doable
    10) I am a complete ignoramus when it comes to hardware and OS software
Its quite possible that this is simply not an option with my Windows variant - if this is the case thats OK I'll think of something else.
If a router is required would something as basic as a 'D-Link DIR-505' do the trick ? (having said that I've also read its manual and there is nothing in it about being able to share
a service in the manner I require)
What I have tried thus far:
    1) Creating an adhoc network secured by WPA-2 - but I don't know what to do with it, I am pretty sure I need certain services on the netbook to be running in order for other computers to discover
it but I don't know what these are
Ideally if someone could point me to a resource that does not discuss any of the following that would be helpful.
    What I do not need
    1) Sharing an internet connection
    2) Sharing an existing wireless network
    3) Doing simple file sharing
    4) Media streaming
    thanks

    Hi,
According to your description, I think you what you want is a wi-fi. if so, you will need a router, each router has a guide to broadcast the wireless connection.

  • How do I include my Airport Express with my base Airport Extreme to extend my in house wireless network??

How do I set up wireless network extension/expansion adding Airport Express to existing Airport Extreme Network??

OK, thanks for the clear information, this really helps.
Locate the AirPort Express about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless signal coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express, the better the performance will be.
Power off the AirPort Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button firmly...and keep holding for an additional 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power cord back into the back of the AirPort Express
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
This process is tricky.....you almost have to have 3 hands to do this.
If you have an iPad or iPhone, the setup is almost too easy to be true. In that case.....
Tap on Settings (gear icon) on the home screen
    Tap on WiFi
Under the heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station....
    Tap on AirPort Express
The utility will analyze things for a minute, then suggest that the Express be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network
Type in  a device name that you want to use, then tap Next
The utility will set up everything for you automatically. When you see the message of Setup Complete, tap Done and you are good to go.
If you want to use the Mac running (10.6.8) for the setup.......
Make sure that the wireless is turned on at the Mac
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Select the AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab under the row of icons
Enter a device name for the AirPort Express
Enter a device password for the AirPort Express
    Verify the device password
    Adjust the Time Zone setting
No other adjustments are needed here
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Set the Wireless Mode to Extend a Wireless Network
Click on the Wireless Network Name box and your AirPort Extreme network name should appear as a choice. Click to select that....or manually enter the exact name of the AirPort Extreme wireless network
Make sure that Wireless Security is set to use WPA2 Personal
Enter the wireless network password for the AirPort Extreme
Verify the wireless network password for the AirPort Extreme
Click Update at the lower right of the window and wait a full minute for the Express to restart. A green light on the Express at this point will be a very good sign that things are up and running correctly.
Your Mac will automatically select the AirPort with the best signal quality. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you may need to manually turn off the WiFi when you move the device near another AirPort, and then turn WiFi back on to get the iOS device to connect to the best signal.
Good luck, please post on your results with the method that you choose.

  • Mac keeps losing wireless network

This has been happening on and off now for a few weeks but has got much worse recently. My mac suddenly doesn't recognise my BT broadband network name. It often takes up to half an hour before it suddenly comes back on again. Any suggestions? I'd be really grateful as I use the internet for work and it's costing me valuable time.

    Hi there,
What I'd suggest that you do is download a copy of iStumbler and run it on your Mac, to see if there are any other wireless networks locally, which could be hindering your attempt to connect and change the wireless channel to a different, less congested channel, if necessary.
    I hope this info helps.

  • How to get MBP to "trust" my wireless network?

Hello, I'm using a Macbook Pro with a Linksys wireless router. Every time I boot the MBP, it says "can't find any trusted wireless networks", or something to that effect. I go to the airport menu and my network is listed there, and it works fine once I click it. I'd like to figure out how to make the network "trusted" so that the MBP can just join it by default. I've searched through the system preferences and the network menus and I can't find any reference to "trusted networks"...any help?

    There is another wireless network
that the computer tries to automatically connect to,
    could this be a problem?
    Yes.
Ensure that it is no the in the Preferred Networks list.
Change the channel of your wireless router.
    Also, in the Preferred
Networks list, the password associated with the
correct network is a long hexadecimal string, not the
alphanumeric password which I normally use. The
security type is WPA personal, and the router is a
    linksys WRT54G with latest firmware.
Try creating a new network name (SSID) and a new password and see if that makes a difference.
Try creating a new location and see if that helps.

  • Lost Connection to C&C Generals Zero Hour Online using the WRT54G v5 Wireless Network

I have this problem playing Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour online. I'm using the WRT54G v5 Wireless Network & when I'm in the game lobby, it kicks me off saying, "Lost connection to C&C Generals Zero Hour Online". This happens quite often variing on me entering & exiting rooms or other players entering & exiting rooms that I'm in. But it doesn't occur when I'm accually play a game with someone. It also does not happen at all when I'm connected directly to the internet connection so I know the network is causing it.
I've never had any problem with this game on any other wireless network types before. I've tried port forwarding with a static IP address, disabling firewalls,  upgrading firmware, etc... No good. I've done some google research & found that varios other people on other forum sites have the same problem, it also occurs on  another computer of mine.
Is there some kind of feature on this network that isn't on any others? One wireless network specificly that I've found that the game works on is the WRT54GS.
Any replies will be greatly appriecitated.
Message Edited by Me Myself AndPi on 02-20-2008 03:13 PM

Maybe I would if I hadn't stopped playing the game 3.5 years ago. You may want to check the date on those previous message. But here's what I remember:
Turns out nothing worked the fix the problem. Not turning of a firewall, not port forwarding, not updating fireware, nothing. There must be a jitter on the routher that triggers the game into thinking it gets disconnected.
Many other users on the forums posted the same problem with this one router too & no one ever figured out a solution. Eventually that router broke & my family bought the WRT54GS2, which worked perfectly.

  • All wireless networks disappears time to time

sometimes the macbook cannot fined any wireless networks even not mine, at the same plase you have had connected with the same MB PRO. The problem is not with the router cause it cannot finde any other wireless networks which i'm pretty much sure that there is in the building. At some points when i restart the MB PRO the problem is gone and sometimes it is still there. As of this posting the MB PRO cannot find any wireless network but the IPAD is just fine.

I have the same problem with my laptop.
Allow computer to turn off device to save power: is not checked.
Advanced power options: the Wireless Adapter is set to "Maximum Performance".
I have a static ip set to 192.168.1.2
It was working for months then stopped 2 months ago after I had troubles connecting to a friend's wireless network unsuccessfuly. So I believe I must have changed something, but what? I have even removed the wireless adapter and re-added with
    latest drivers.
I have 2 laptops on the wireless LAN. One is connected immediately when I open the lid after sleep, i.e. wireless adaptor enabled & I can browse and work online. The other has to enable the wireless adapter and re-connect to the router
which takes a minute or so. Not a showstopper because I am then up and running... but very frustrating.
I have trawled forums and searched for 2 months now. Could very well have missed the solution somewhere?
Good luck milky9311, I hope we both find the solution here. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • Can't detect a German PC wireless network I know is there

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum and I hope someone can help me.
I'm visiting friends in Berlin from Canada with my Powerbook G4 with OS10.4.11. I can't detect my host's wireless network even though I can detect 24 other wireless networks in her apartment building (I downloaded MacStumbler and used it to check). I know her network ("Jenny") is not hidden because she got a friend across the courtyard the same apartment building to check if she could see it on her computer this morning, which she could. I also tried to find "Jenny" by clicking on "Other" and then entering "Jenny" in "Network Name" and entering the WAP password my friend gave me (I also checked that with her so I know it is right) under both WPA Personal and WPA2 Personal. That didn't work either. I also followed advice on this forum and got rid of that stupid pop-up box saying "Your Network Settings have been changed by another application" when I clicked on System Preferences/Network
What should I do? All my friend knows is that she has a PC, she doesn't know the brand or model of her router or her ISP provider. If I can't solve this, I will be in big trouble as I had planned to stay in Berlin for a few months using my friend's wireless network to get online every day. I can get online fine via her router when I have a cable plugged into my computer in her flat, but I am staying across the courtyard in their second flat and we can't string a cable across the courtyard... I've never had problems before connecting with any PC wireless network, in Europe or N. America.
    Very grateful for any help.

It won't let me do that. When I go to the Network window of my System Preferences, it says Location: Automatic, and it won't let me click on New Location or on Edit Locations - they are pale grey.
Also, it says Show Network Port Configurations and it gives me six: Internal Modem, Airport, Bluetooth, Built-in Ethernet, Built-in Firewire, VPN (L2TP) whatever that is, and Ethernet Adaptor (en2), and I don't know if that is the cable from my friend's router or the new stick adaptor I bought (it doesn't change, whichever I have plugged in), but all these are also pale grey and I can't click on them or on the boxes marked New Rename Delete or Duplicate.
Also the stick adaptor I bought is not showing up in my Finder window as an attached device - shouldn't it? This means I can't eject it safely when I want to. There are no instructions enclosed with it or on the manufacturer's website.
When I click on Network Status with the cable attached, it says I am currently connected to the Internet via built-in Ethernet with the IP address 192.168.0.112 so I guess built-in Ethernet must be the cable. So if the Ethernet Adaptor (en2) is the adaptor stick, maybe it isn't being recognized by my computer because it is on channel 13?

  • Can my older Airport Express 802.11g join an existing wireless network

I have a Airport Express 802.11g firmware version 6.3 . Using the most recent Airport Express Utility I can set it up as a base station on its own independent network but I cannot join it to my existing home wireless network. As I go through the wizard (or manual setup) It just does not detect/display any existing wireless networks. I have plenty of mobile devices in the  house that can see the wireless network...and next doors network.
So, it begs the question ... is an 802.11g unit actually capable of joining another network or is this capability available on later models only. A search of apple support and the wider internet for "Airport Express 802.11g capabilities" yeilds a blizzard or useless info.
    Thank you

Sorry, I cannot help on Windows since I do not have a Windows 7 machine here to test. I have used XP in the past and AirPort Utility appears to be virtually the same in Windows as a Mac. I assume that this is the case for AirPort Utility 5.6.1, and it should be able to configure the Express.
The older Express will join most wireless networks if the following conditions are met:
    1) The Express is functioning correctly.
    2)  The wireless network name is 12 characters or less and it contains only normal letters and numbers. Avoiding blank spaces in the wireless network name will help improve the chances of the Express joining the network as well.
    3)  The wireless router is broadcasting a compatible signal that would allow the "g" Express to connect. If your network is broadcasting a wireless "n only" signal, the Express cannot connect to this network.
    4)  The wireless security on the network is set to a WPA compatible setting. That is because the older Express has difficulty joining 3rd party wireless networks using WPA2 Personal or WPA2-PSK-AES encryption. In other words, if your network is now using WPA2 Personal or WPA2-PSK-AES settings, the "g" Express will probably not be able to join the network.
    5)  If you are using MAC Address Filtering on your network, the MAC address of the Express will need to be included in your settings.
    6)  The wireless network password uses the same guidelines that appear in 2) above
The items noted above will provide the Express with the best chance of joining your network.  Plan to use the Manual Setup option in AirPort Utility and be prepared to use the Option or Alt keys on the PC if needed.
If you are looking for a guarantee of success in advance for this task, I cannot provide that and you should wait for another user to post who might be able to meet your requirements in that regard.

  • Airport Extreme Card can't connect to wireless network

    Hello All,
I recently installed an Airport Extreme Card into my PowerMac G5, but am having difficulty connecting to the existing wireless network. The card appears to be installed correctly, and Airport comes up and says it's running, but doesn't see any available wireless networks. An iMac 5 feet away (and no closer to the airport extreme base station) connects perfectly. With all the info about the antenna, i've triple checked to make sure the antenna is completely installed in the card so I don't think that is the issue. It's part no. M8881LL/A Model No. A1028 and it's installed in a PowerMac Dual 2Ghz PowerPC G5. I'm wondering if there is a compatibility issue? Any comments?
    Thanks for the help.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Duane,
Thanks for the welcome and the reply. The PowerMac is an older one so I don't have the external antenna, and have looked around for one with no luck. I just ordered one and it will be here tomorrow so I'm hoping you saved the day and that's the ticket. Thanks so much for the help! I'll update this again if that solves my problem, but just wanted to say thanks... i'll know more on Monday.
