Any way to influence the internally used texture format?

is there any way (through ActionScript or maybe through compiler flags) to set what pixelformat (ARGB8, RGB565 and so on) is used for the textures?

Depending upon what your data looks like something else you can do in the realm of post-processing is only plot a new point if it differs from the previous one by more than a certain amount or percentage. The advantage of this approach (assuming it will work for your data) is that a straight decimation can miss potentially important spikes in the data. This routine won't.
For this technique to work, the data should be either varying very slowly, exhibiting well-defined step functions, or be at primarily one level with occasional peaks.

PS: You can also decimate using some sort of aggregate function over the decimation range. For example, instead of just taking every Nth sample, have your output be the average (or min, max, median, whatever) of
N-sample blocks of data. With this the 1st datapoint would be the average of the first N samples, the 2nd datapoint would be the average of the 2nd N samples and so on. The aggregate function you'd select would depend on what your data looks like and what function wouldn't hide important details in the data. For example, if you have large positive-going peaks in the data you probibly wouldn't want to use an average because you could lose the peak--a max operation might be more appropriate. On the other hand, if the input is noisy, an average might provide some much-needed low-pass filtering.
