AP541N - Cluster Frage....

Hallo,
-The APs use the same radio mode (for example, radio 1 uses 802.11g) <-- klar
-The APs are connected on the same bridged segment.
-The APs joining the cluster have the same Cluster Name. <--- auch klar
-Clustering mode is enabled on both APs. <---- schon kalr

  • AP541N cluster and VLAN

    Hi.
    Simple but not obvious question.
I've added separated wifi for guest with VLAN ID 300. Now I have 2 more access points. They are in cluster but only one is connected to smart switch SLM2008.
Should I need to connect all of them to smart switch? I do not understand how cluster and VLAN work.

    Hello Tomasz,
Yes. I guess you need to connect all APs to the switch (same bridged network). Clustering only makes all your AP act as one single entity ( you don't have to connect to the second AP In a cluster separately. Same wireless configuration will do).
Refer Clustering section under the below manual for further details:

    Hope this helps,

  • AP541N Cluster Q&A

AP541 Access Point Pro Series Q&A to share for keyword searches.
First, need to confirm the maximum units in a cluster is 10 (or if not, what the max # is).
Maximum # of units in a cluster is 10.
Second, they mentioned adaptive RAID and want to confirm how the overlapping channels are managed.  Will it auto adjust as needed or is the original channel assigned to the unit what remains?
Clustered units can be configured for radio management.  Channels can automatically be reassigned based on interference levels.  The time interval of the channel reassignment can be configured.  Also, channels can be locked down.
Third – How do the units communicate together?  What type of encryption is used between points?
Clustering information is shared securely amongst APs via SSL.
Fourth – Please confirm if there are any features for rogue access point detection.
    Rogue AP detection is supported.

    HI Steve,
I just spent some time setting this up for our demo site.
This shows that both ap's are on channel 6 and that they would like to change to 3 and 7.  It never actually seems to change the channels, will it? As well, why would we not, when putting it in a cluster, not force the units to use 1, 6, and 11?
    Thanks!

Hi AshevilleDon. I did a search on their website for the " LA CROSSE weather station" and I couldn't find a specific model. What is that weather product's model number? What version of Windows do you have on your Desktop?

  • Connect to a specific AP541N in a cluster system, and issue with cluster+WDS

We are running with four AP541N in a cluster (connected to a SA540), where they all broadcast on the same SSID and channel (9). If we forces one offline by unplugging the power, a client is automatically connected to another AP in the cluster. But we have a few questions:
    1) For testing purpose, is it possible from Vista/Win7/XP to force connection onto a specific AP in the cluster? Only one network is shown in the list, and the AP with best signal seems to be the one automatically choosen.
    2) One problem we have found is that two of the APs have a WDS connection between them (one is at a location where we could not easily cable it). This also seems to basically work fine with clustering, but if the wired part of the WDS goes offline, the clients already connected to the wireless WDS AP does not get kicked out, but do of course loose their connection to the network. Even worse, clients connected to the wired WDS AP (which "went down"), might be transferred to the wireless AP with no network connection since the signal from this might be the best...! Any way to solve this, so that APs depending on the WDS kicks out their clients if the WDS is broken....?
We do also seem to be biten by the "speed degrade" issue of the APA541N now-and-then, particulary on the AP beeing the wired part of the WDS. Using WPA-PSK, and having set the recommended "key refresh" setting to 0, without seeming to help anything at all. Running FW 1.8.0, and really hoping for a new FW fixing this issue to appear soon!

    Thanks Dave!
    The setup is like this:
    SA540
    |
    |- AP#1
    |- AP#2  ( ( ( WDS ) ) )  AP#3
    |- AP#4
    |- + printer
The network is intended mostly for laptops which uses wireless network. The implementation is on a sports arena, and to get good enough coverage we had to put AP#3 in a tower across the outdoor space. It have free sight with only glass windows between to where AP#2 is (which is also quite high), but AP#3 then helps to cover the ground area which AP#2 did not properly do alone. So AP#3 is connected to AP#2 with WDS, and acts like a repeater. No equipment is connected to the ethernet port of the AP#3. We are not able to acheive the same coverage from any place where AP#3 could have been cabled, so WDS from AP#2 is our only option here.
If AP#2 goes down (as in forced down by unplugging the power when testing), clients connected to AP#3 is left untouched but looses their connection with the network. Non of the other cabled AP's are in such a postition that they can set up a another WDS to AP#3 (as it seems is possible with AP541N, to have several WDS connections on one unit, without me investigating further into this). The best would be that AP#3 would kick out the connected clients if WDS goes down, since most of the potential clients might be able to get a useable connection to AP#1 instead.
Problem 2 here is that error recovery on this should hopefully happen automatically, since there might not be any technicians around at all the time this is beeing used.
Even that it is announced to be so, we find the loss of speed with WDS to be quite noticeable. Sitting with a laptop at the same location as AP#3, and getting a 3of5 bar signal from AP#2 with a 11g laptop, we get max internt speed (which is ~10Mbps). But then booting the AP#3 and connecting to this instead, we only get speed in the range 3-4Mbps. Should the WDS and the AP acting as repeater drop the speed this much? WDS is configured with WPA-PSK and spanning tree enabled. All the AP's are running in 11bgn mode, and the regular broadcasted net is using WPA-PSK too.

7.Make the following changes if there are multiple instances of Oracle Identity Analytics, standalone or clustered, on the same subnet.
    a.Navigate to rbacx_staging/WEB-INF directory.
b.In a text editor, open application-context.xml, find bean id commManager, and examine the constructor-arg value.
    c.Set the constructor-arg value with a unique instance name, e.g. value="SRM-Instance-1".
d.In a text editor, open search-context.xml, find bean id searchConfiguration, and examine the constructor-arg value.
•The deployment is a standalone, constructor-arg defaults to a value of 0, which is specified as value="0".
e.Navigate to rbacx_staging/WEB-INF/classes directory and do the following:
i.In a text editor, open oscache.properties (located in the rbacx_staging/WEB-INF/classes directory), and find the cache.cluster.multicast.ip property.
ii.Uncomment cache.cluster.multicast.ip by removing the # at the start of the line. Each Oracle Identity Analytics instance requires a unique cache.cluster.multicast.ip value.

Did you import all the relevant sql scripts for your database? You have to import all the migrate/upgrade scripts as well. Once you have imported all the required sql scripts, it will start properly. You can ignore the cluster warnings.

  • Address element of only one line in cluster array

    Hi,
I created an array of clusters. In each cluster the switching a binary element is supposed to activate/deativate the following elements. In my VI however either the elements of none or the elements of all clusters are activated/deactivated. Does anybody see, where I made the mistake?
    Thank you.

    ClusterArray.vi ‏21 KB

    Hallo,
    http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=27375&query.id=12471#M27375

  • AP541N Management Software?

Hi is there any management software available to manage 5 or so AP541N running across a WAN. Eg we have a couple of VAP's setup on each access point 1 for staff and 1 for guests. I would like to be able to change all the WPA Personal guest access password centrally rather than having to log onto each box and edit it manually.
    Thanks
    Colin

Hi Colin, there is not any supported software from Cisco for these units. I know CCA can detect the AP for the topology but I don't think you can actually manage them from there.
If these AP's are installed at one location, you could cluster them and with any change made to one AP all the AP's will reflect the changes automatically.

  • AP541N General Questions

    Hello Everyone,
We are considering order the AP541N for our network. A few questions...
1). Are there multiple models of the AP541N? or just one cisco part number?
2). I am assuming the basic antenna comes with it. Please advise if this is something that I need to buy seperate.
3). Are there part numbers for the POE injector?
Can anyone help me with the part numbers on the AP541N and the poe injectors?
4). We would buy a couple of these and run them in cluster mode. My understanding is that I won't need a controller. Do I need to buy a certain model to use the clustering or is that available on all the AP541N?
5). Can I have this talk to active directory to authenticate users? Is that tough to do? Do I need install some kind of agent on a domain controller? I have configured the ASA to use Active Directory for authentications. Should it be any more difficult that that?
I have setup a few other Cisco APs before and am generally familair with wireless. But, I am not a "wireless expert" and don't have any experience with this particular product.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Hi, My name is Eric Moyers. I am a Network Support Engineer in the Cisco Small Business Support Center. Thank you for using the Cisco Community Post Forums.
1). There is just the one model.
2). It does come with the basic antenna. (3 total)
3). Currently there is no recommended injector. We do recommend a small unmanaged POE Switch (SD208P or SD2008P for example). It has been known to work with some 3rd party injectors but nothing that we can support or guarantee that it would work.
4). Correct, you do not need a controller, in fact these will not work with a controller. Clustering is present on all AP541Ns.
5). Yes you can have this authenticate to active directory, if you have any issue you can call into the Small Business Support Center and have one of the support reps. work with you on this. It shouldn't be any more difficult than with the ASA ?

  • Clients connected to AP541N cannot get DHCP address

New install with 3 AP541N's in a cluster. Two AP's are connected by an ESW-520-8P PoE switch and one on its own power adapter and a 3COM switch.  I have set up a single SSID with WPA-AES encryption. I am connecting with HP 2740P tablets with Intel wireless cards. Clients can see and connect to the AP's but only some can get IP addesses from our Small Business Server 2003 DHCP server.
It's intermittent, some will get an IP and work for a while, while other can't. Then the ones that are working will drop and then none of the devices can get an IP. Then suddenly a few will start to work again. I have solid connectivity everywhere in the building but can't get an IP. Also, strangely, even when assigning a static IP I can not pass traffic, although it says I am connected with "5 bars" of signal strength.
Clients show up under Cluster>Sessions, but sometimes with really high counts of "Signal" and "Error Rate". However, even the clients with a "good" connection cannot get an IP.
Here is what I have tried:
Upgrade firmware on all 3 AP's to 1.9.1 (latest)
Wiped and reloaded the devices several times
Tried no encryption, WEP, WPA, doesn't make a difference
Tried everything described in this thread: https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3078962#3078962 including the registry entry on the DHCP server
I have a spare AP that I put into production with the same load, but it didn't seem to make a difference.
    Broadcast/Multicast limiting set to off
Upgraded to latest drivers on tablets; Boosted power on adapter to highest strength; Turned off power saving
I have exhausted all efforts in searching and trying based on my own experience, so any help the community can provide would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • General AP541N Questions

A couple of questions about the AP541N:
    1. Does anyone finally have these installed and working properly, especially in a clustered environment?  I have read so many comments about slow performance, no performace, bad coverage, etc...  They sound like the perfect product for my intended use if they actually work as advertised.  Anyone???
    2. Does anyone know the installation requirements for multiple units?  (What is the minimum/maximum distance between units?  How many units are needed for a certain area?  Etc...)
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
    Charles

    Hi Charles,
I was hoping that a member of the public would answer your post.
If I recall correctly, clustering is controlled via the copper Ethernet ports, so that any AP that can communicate in the same VLAN can be clustered together. Up to 10 AP's can be in a cluster.
It uses a encrypted proprietary protocol so that clustered APs "talk" to eachother.
AP's are in the same cluster if they satisfy the following requirements'
    in the same vlan
    the same cluster name and
    location assisgned.
Once clustering is enabled, a configuration change on one AP is propogated to all AP's in the cluster.
If you are a Cisco partner, you can check out a AP541 emulator at the following location so you can check out the management interface.
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/community/netpro/small-business/onlinedemos?view=overview%20target=
I have attached  the WiFi old deployment guide that specifically looks at the deployment of AP541.
    Hope you find it informative.

  • Which APs allow clustering with an AP541N?

I have one AP541N and need to extend the wireless network with a second wireless AP.  Which models of AP can I use with the AP541N to achieve a 'cluster', please? Is it just with a second AP541N or can I use other Cisco APs to achieve the cluster?
Am I correct in thinking that doing this will allow wireless clients to 'roam' seamlessly between the two APs?
    Thanks for your help.

Hi, My name is Eric Moyers. I am a Network Support Engineer in the Cisco Small Business Support Center. Thank you for using the Cisco Community Post Forums.
To the best of my knowledge, the AP541N will only cluster with other AP541N's.
The clustering option with AP541N's is strictly for ease of management. It allows multiple AP541N's to share configuration information to speed setup, reduce wireless channel interference and simplify management. What is actually shared between the AP's is Wireless Network Identifier, Security features, User Names and Passwords, Traffic Priorities, Radio Settings and Wireless Interface settings.
The Ap541N has what is called Fast Client Roaming capability, not Seamless Roaming. The difference here is that seamless roaming uses a Wireless LAN Controller to help monitor signal strength between the AP and a connecting client. When the signal degrades to a certain point the WLC will automatically switch the wireless client over to the next strongest signal.
With Fast Client Roaming the AP is using a Fast Roaming Protocol. With this there is a slight disconnect and then reconnect from one AP to the next strongest one. Note: you may experience lost packets as the device jumps between AP's, but the connection should not be lost. Should being the main word. Depending on environment and congestion, if the reassociation takes too long, the connection may be dropped.
If you have any other questions please let me know.

  • AP541n clustering - wireless neighbourhood

    I have 2 AP541n's on firmware 1.9.2.
They provide two SSID's on different vlan's, so far so good.
However, on the wireless neighbourhood tab it only shows one of the SSID's as being in the cluster.
The other SSID does show, but only when not in cluster or both is selected.
I can access both SSID's fine, its just this management page that doesnt quite work.
I have removed and added them again, it seems that only the SSID first in the list wireless -> wireless network setup page shows as being in the cluster.
Have I missed something or is this a feature?
If it is a feature, can it be fixed?
    Paul

    Hi,
    See responses below
2 AP541n, set up in clustering mode, Yes
with two VAPs defined (on both, as a result of the clustering)? Yes
And only one of the VAP SSIDs is detected as in clustering mode? Not quite. There are 3 radio buttons (in cluster, not in cluster and both). Selecting both shows all the SSID's. Selecting in cluster shows only VAP 0. Slecting not in cluster shows all the SSID's.
I have attached some images showing the issue as well as the VAP config page.
    Thanks

  • AP541N-E-K9: Clustering and VAPs

    Hi,
I have configured two AP541N in a cluster, but only VAP0,  is listed as clustered. None of the VAPs seems to be clustered. What can I configure to get all SSIDs clustered?
    Product Identifier:
    AP541N-E-K9
    Hardware Version:
    V01
    Software Version:
    AP541N-K9-2.0(4)
    Thanks!

Sure, all SSIDs are working properly and are broadcasting. I have tested all of them on both AP541s.
New config are even synched between the two APs, so the clustering bit seems to work properly, and it might just be the status display on "Cluster->Wireless Neighborhood" that is not working properly on my end.
But what worries me even more is that I have noticed the stability of the APs to be a bit dodgy after I created the cluster.
I had one AP setup first for about three weeks before I purchased another one. During this period the AP was rock stable. Then after purchasing another one, I created the cluster, and after 2-3 days, I noticed that some packets were not forwarded through the AP. The problem got worse, and I had to reboot the AP to solve the problem. At first I noticed that the client was not able to resolve DNS requests. Then ICMP requests was not responded to from hosts on the local network, and RDP was not working properly. I did not tests packets towards hosts outside the local subnet. I will do that the next time I experience this issue.
I read through the release notes, and “CSCth14132—Station Isolation is Sporadic”, seemed to match the issue I experienced pretty good.
As beeing an Cisco engineer (eskaar) myself, I have sent you an email with some additional information regarding CSCth14132.
Any thoughts about the instability I experienced? Have you come across it yourself?
    Thanks,
    //Eskild
