Aperture 3.1 uses Facebook captions as Version Names

Not sure whether this has happened due to the u/g to 3.1, but while still running 3.0.3 I exported a set of photos to Facebook.
By default, the Caption shown in FB is the filename (version name).
*In FB* I edited the captions but now Aperture is using those captions as the version names of the original photos (i.e. in the Projects, not just in the Facebook albums).
This is not good, since I now have several photos with the same version name!!!!
Is the the expected behaviour? I can't find a pref that affects it.
Anyone else seen this?

David Riecks has an article on the issues with Aperture and IPTC metadata over at:
http://digitalassetmanagementnews.org/taxonomy-metadata/aperture-3-removes-iptc- extension-and-plus-embedded-metadata/
and
http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/imagedatabases/aperture3.html
It appears that you are correct in your assertion that Apple (Aperture) does not adhere to the IPTC standard for image metadata. Ad Mr. Riecks points out, this should be of major concern for anyone using Aperture as their image warehouse and then exporting their images out to anyone who does adhere to the IPTC standard as some of your most important data (inclusive of location, identification, rights use, and copyright - aka IPTC Core in Aperture) are essentially lost.
Very disappointing indeed! Failure to adhere to industry standards are the primary reason I stopped using Windows products and made the migration to Apple.
Hopefully Aperture will address this in coming releases to include the extraction of Faces data into the IPTC 1.1 Extension Description structure "Person Shown" with an option to extract the Faces data into the IPTC1.1 Extension Models structure "Model Shown" fields.

  • How to batch change Caption with version name?

I'm using Aperture 3.0.2. I want to caption the photos based on version name. This way when I export the photos from Aperture to Picasaweb, the caption will show. This will allow the visitors to tell me which image proof that I need to re-touch.

I found my own answer. I wrote this AppleScript. It's my first AppleScript ever. It's nice to Goggle and found some other resources.
    tell application "Aperture"
    set imageSel to (get selection)
    if imageSel is {} then
    error "Please select an image."
    else
repeat with i from 1 to count of imageSel
    tell library 1
    tell item i of imageSel
    make new IPTC tag with properties {name:"Caption/Abstract", value:get name}
    end tell
    end tell
    end repeat
    end if
    end tell

  • Facebook captions overwritten after new photo added to album?

First of all, I hate how Aperture doesn't use the caption or title, but rather the version name(?!!) for the caption in Facebook.
This is now causing me problems.
I upload 10 photos to Facebook. I edit their captions manually (since I don't name my versions as captions--who does that?). OK, everything's fine.
But if I then add a photo to the album from Aperture, it resets all the captions back to the version names! I've lots tons of captions that way until I figured out what was happening.
Please, Apple, do the logical thing and make captions, captions. That would obviate this problem completely.
    Thanks.

Same problem here and it's the same with iPhoto.  It's just plain ridiculous and I don't know why Apple hasn't fixed it.  As a result, I'm not using the Aperture Facebook uploader anymore.  I'm using a 3rd party solution: Facebook Exporter for Aperture by Sean Farley.  It has it's unique problems as well, but at least Sean is working on it. http://seanfarley.org/aperture
Does anyone have any better solutions?

  • Caption to file name?

If I could rename the file name using exif data (Caption) my newspaper would be oh so happy. Or rather, I wouldn't have to do it by hand.
Is this even possible? I see nothing in the file naming on export that leads me to using any sort of metadata. I see that Caption appears when exporting metadata. But renaming DSC_0089.jpg to Big Dog at Wedding would be oh so useful.

Ok actually the CR was in the filename but Finder couldn't really display it. Taking out at the CRs is, for me anyway, the way to go.
So this revised script will do that. It will remove any CR from the caption and replace  it with a space.
set oldTid to my text item delimiters
    tell application "Aperture"
              set imageSel to (get selection)
if imageSel is {} then -- no images selected warn
display alert "Select at least one version"
else -- at least one selected
repeat with i from 1 to count of imageSel
set my text item delimiters to linefeed
get ((value of IPTC tag "Caption/Abstract" of item i of imageSel))
set foo to text items of result
set my text item delimiters to " "
set name of item i of imageSel to (foo as string)
                        end repeat
              end if
    end tell
set my text item delimiters to oldTid
The new script will also check for at least one image being selected and if there is not it will put up an alert.
All the other characteres in the caption are left alone. If they don;t cause you any problems when the are used in the exported images file name fine. If they do cause problems thay can be removed also.
I don't see your point here? And isn't this a consequence of your script? I don't think I am exactly clear on the difference between what I wanted (Caption-->File Name) and what we have now (Caption-->Version Name, with Aperture renaming the file in the Finder to Version Name).
I suppose I didn't explain myself well. Let me try again.
The caption will name the version and the version name (which is now the caption) will be used to name the file when you export it from Aperture using the filenaming preset Version name.
The problems might arise once the version is exported from Aperture and put into the file system. As you saw when the CR was imbedded in the file name, some characters can cause problems for the file system. The CR was a minor problem but things like slashes, the period and the pipe symbol (|) have special meaning to the file system and to software outside of Aperture and might cause more significant headaches.
Anyway use the new script and see what happens. If you don't run into any problems then it can be left as it is. If you do run into problems the script can be modified to remove those characters also.
    regards

  • Version Name vs File Name

When I import files, the result seems to adhere to the Version Name I enter in the Input Inspector panel.
But then, when I'm in Brower Line Mode, I see that the Filename reflects projects I imported a week ago, alongside the correct Version Name.
Should I care? What am I missing?

    Hi,
Please keep in mind that we are communicating with each other through a very thin wire: strings of words you type show on my screen.  Short strings.  We use terms with care in order to make our communication possible.
"Orthodox" is a strange way to put that.  "Correct" is the term I would use.
"HUD" means Heads-Up Display.  "Brick" refers to the Adjustment panes that show stacked in the Adjustment Inspector.  The Aperture glossary is here.
In order for any of us to answer your question -- which we'd like to do  -- we need to know to what you refer.  Even though you've asked and re-asked, I still can't tell what you are asking.
We know what List View is.  It can have columns that show the Version Name and the File Name.
The Version Name is determined by the File Naming Preset you use when you import.  The File Naming Preset is selected in the "Rename Files" section of the Import Settings.  You can rename Versions at any time.
The File Name is the name of the Image's Original.  You can change this on Import to match the Version Name specified File Naming Preset by checking the box "Rename Original File".  File names cannot be readily changed.  (You must use "Metadata➞Batch Change➞Version Name Format" and check "Apply to Original files".
Does that help resolve your issue?

  • Why have my version names disappeared from Browser view?

I know there is an easy solution to this because it has happened to me before. In the Browser viewer in Aperture 3, I can usually see the Version name under each thumbnail. The Version names have disappeared and I can't remember how to get them back. Please help!

Sometimes finding stuff is hard especially something like this that doesn't seem to have a particular name. But in this case the information under the image is metadata so trying a search for that in the help box got me:

  • Any way to stop facebook exporter from using version names as the caption

I tried the Aperture 3 facebook export and it is using the version names as the caption. If I change the caption on facebook it then changes the version name in my aperture library when it syncs with facebook. Is there anyway to have it use the caption meta data field instead? You would think if they had that option for mobile me they would have it for FB too.

Add me to the list of people interested by this issue - but AFAIK there is no way to change this. Let's hope Apple fixes this soon.

  • Facebook publishing uses Version name as description for Facebook uploads

Facebook publishing on Aperture 3 uses my Version name as the description on Facebook. Is there a way to keep it from doing that or change what metadata it uses for the description? I would love to be able to write a caption in Aperture and have that show as the description. Otherwise, I would like the description to be left blank on Facebook rather than putting the Version name.

I never found a fix for this. I also realized that if you ever delete the sync folder from Aperture, the pictures in Facebook will be deleted as well. So I've simply stopped using the Facebook publishing feature from Aperture. Now I'm back to the usual: export a folder of the images I want to upload, upload that folder to Facebook, and delete that folder after uploading it since I have the original file elsewhere.

  • Aperture & Facebook Uploader - No Version nor Metadata

So I'm simply trying to upload a single image to Facebook in Aperture 3.1 via the integrated Facebook uploader. I've edited, cropped and applied metadata (caption, keywords, title etc.) to the photo. Select the version and upload.
The Master Image AND the Version is uploaded and the default filename is used as the caption. Should be simple enough to select a 'VERSION' and when uploaded only the Version should upload and, of course, the caption should be in place.
What's up Aperture? Why won't you upload the actual photo I've selected? And please include the metadata!
Anyone else experiencing this problem. Any ideas?
Message was edited by: Allan Karl

I don't think Facebook is retaining all the Metadata from images uploaded by any means. However, it's definitely retaining the Version Name - And this is what serves as the caption for the photo in the photo album on Facebook.
Since updating Aperture to 3.1.1, I no longer get the entire 'stack' or multiple versions of the image uploaded. So the software update for Aperture HAS fixed this issue.
However, I have now noticed another issue since starting to use the Aperture uploader. I have about 10 albums/galleries on Facebook. All of these were created prior to the Aperture 3.0 release with the integrated Facebook uploader.
Now when I upload an image and subsequently Aperture accesses my Facebook photo albums, it begins to sync these photos and albums. The Facebook directory that you can see at the bottom of the Library now lists those albums that exist on Facebook and begins to sync those photos. However, when I browse photos by 'date' all those Facebook photos from those albums appear in my Library with the date listed as the date I first viewed them.
So if I click on one of the Facebook albums in Aperture, let Aperture go through its sync process, then review library "photos" and sort by date, all the Facebook photos I have looked at appear as the most current photos.
this is not a good thing because I have Albums, Projects etc. that are sync'd with iPhone or Apple TV that include date filters (projects in last month, photos last week etc.) Now all these legacy Facebook photos are appearing on these other devices.

  • Aperture Batch Change, Caption to Version

I need to change a large amount of captions to the version names. The reason for this is so when I export, it will create subfolders titled with the version names. I haven't been able to find an option for subfolders to be labeled as caption names, so this seems like the only option. Does anyone know how to batch change the caption name to the version name? Or for that matter, batch change the version name at all, even if I was to manually type in what I want for multiple versions. Thanks!

OK, it is already possible to use the version name in the naming scheme (see *File->Export Versions* +subfolder format+ )
I haven't been able to find an option for subfolders to be labeled as caption names, so this seems like the only option.
Now you seem to want the subfolders named after the captions. You're right that isn't an option.

There is no provision in Aperture to copy one piece of Metadata to another. You would need to use an Applescript to do it (make the version name the caption).
To just batch change the version name see *Metadata->Batch Change*

  • Batch Change Version name to use Caption - for MobileMe Gallery

Hi, is there a way to batch change the version name files (which is what MobileMe can use to display under the picture) to use the Caption? The Caption is what I believe is/can be used in the regular galleries/web pages exported from Aperture, MobileMe seems to work a bit differently...
    Thanks for thoughts.

    Jonas,
I don't believe that can be done with any procedure supplied with Aperture. Settings for a MobileMe Album only provides the choice of Filename or no filename. Whether there is a hack somewhere to switch Filename and Caption, en masse', I do not know.

Firefox 2.0.0.20 is the last ever release for Mac OSX 10.3.9 and earlier versions, but that may not work any better because some large websites are blocking those older browsers or dropping support for older browsers like IE6 & earlier, and Firefox 2 & earlier due to security issues.
Using Safari on those websites ''(not enough total users for websites to be concerned about)'', or installing a new version of MacOSX are two solutions; or getting a new computer.

Thank you for the answers so far, but I'll make one correction: I said earlier that the Boston Globe website, boston.com, does not have a mobile site, and I would need to visit their regular website on my iPhone. Actually, I just found out that boston.com has a mobile site, so I'd obviously use that instead of the regular site. By doing that, I'd save a ton of data (I think). Does that change your answers?

    Hi,
I am using a Nvidia 4200M adapter in my Laptop, Driver 266.96, Direct X 11
In my desktop I am using an ATI XFX 6950, latest revision drivers (I am not at home right now so I cant get that info).
The issue I did describe above, but it was a long explanation.
In some flash games the game files load initially and get as far as the "click to start" button. Then the flash area usually goes either all white or all black (usually depending on the falsh game default background color) and then it stays that color. Cant see anything after hitting start (usually most games have an intro video or animation before the game starts, but I cant see any of it.
For the very few games that do start, the flash game or application does not seem to work correctly in that when the rare game starts, it wont save any game files or save files to the pc and so if I exit the game (navigate away to another page or close browser) and then later come back, even though I click the option to save games (and ensure that the flash application slider shows it can save files and lots of space) it does not save and I have to start from the beginning all the time.
    More explanation I gave above.
