Aperture 3 Performance is Unbelievably Slow

My library is not huge (~9000 images), but Aperture 3 performance is ridiculously slow. My library resides on an external drive (a Mercury On-The-Go High Speed Portable SATA Solution unit). No other apps are open. I have 2GB RAM. I have turned off the faces feature, thinking that might help. No dice. The software is unusable at this performance level. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have been flamed (OK, toasted a bit)for suggesting that:
-- Defragging the Aperture Library is necessary at all or helpful if done,
-- Simple copy out/copy back is not enough.
But this is precisely what I have seen. OSX does an incredible job of keeping disks A) optimised and B) largely defragged. The Aperture Library appears to be a huge exception. I suspect that this may be an artifact of the "Package" concept. It is clear that in many cases a Package is intended to look like one single file. I wonder if this keeps all of the internal files from being reorganized when copied. I hasten to add that I am way over my depth here.
I can confirm that:
-- Deleting the cache and prefs files seems to fix the major speed problems.
-- The various preview, index, and related files can become fragmented into hundreds of fragments. Master image files are typically not more than four fragments. Obviously, the faster your disk, the less this is an issue, but for those of us who are running a plane Jane mini with a slow drive, a RAID 0 is not an option.
-- As noted by many, iDefrag's "Quick On-Line" mode cleans this up in mere minutes. (Fewer minutes the second time.) And, as a side benefit, it cleans up the various Private and Spotlite files that may have become fragmented. All of this WITHOUT attempting a major reordering of the disk. (Probably just as well, because, as noted repeatedly, OSX does an excellent job of optimization.
In any case, the happy coincidence of all of this and the multiple udates from Apple is that Aperture 3 absolutely roars. I still keep my stuff backed up in three copies, but crashes, hangs, etc., have never been a problem and all of the brushes and sliders are much more responsive, on 100 MB TIFF images at full resolution, than Apeture 2 ever was.

  • Aperture performance on MBP 17" 2.16GHz Core Duo

    Hi everyone,
I've been happily using Aperture for a couple of years and apart from a few niggles I love it.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 17" 2.16GHz (Core Duo) with 2GB RAM (the maximum) and an after-market 320GB 4200rpm internal hard drive. Running OS X 10.5.8 and Aperture 2.1.4. My hard drive is quite full, about 25GB free space. My Aperture library is about 60GB.
However I recently upgraded from a 6MP dslr to a 15Mp dslr and at approximately the same time Aperture performance began to take a nosedive. Now opening an image will sometimes beachball for 10 seconds (at other times they open normally in about 2 seconds). Cloning has become a nightmare of sluggishness, just clicking the retouch tool will beachball for 10 or more seconds and every edit will take a few seconds to appear.
Apart from buying a new Mac, what are my best options to improve performance? Its got so bad I'm starting to think about switching to Lightroom! (I read somewhere that Aperture is limited by the video card RAM, and my card only has 256MB I think. Apparently Lightroom doesn't do this?)
    Thanks!
Edit: Don't know if it has any relevance, but I have never used Aperture's Vault feature. I don't even really understand it to be honest . I backup my photos online to Mozy.

The file sizes on the 15 MP files are 2.5x larger than on the 6 MP camera. So by nature it's going to be slower.
What's causing it? Probably a mix of all 3. That machine is 2.5 years old now; things have gotten faster and with larger RAW file sizes it will be taxed.
You could always see if you could get to an Apple Store and load up a card with a few of your images and see how it goes. Challenge being, new machines are running 10.6 and there have been reports here that Aperture on 10.6 is slower than it is on 10.5 (seems better with 10.6.2 than 10.6.1 but still not sure if it's 100% as fast) so there are a lot of variables going on there.

  • Maximizing Aperture Performance

I'm on the trial right now, but definitely plan on buying the software. I'm an amateur shooter, and I like the RAW processing and overall flow of the software.
I have an Intel iMac with the x1600 graphics card and 1.5 GB of ram. As I've added more files to the library (and I'm still under 1,000) I'm seeing it start to slow down a bit. Nothing that scares me, but I'd like ideas on how to best maximize performance. I have the library on my internal HDD. Should I use multiple libraries and really restrict their size? Keep the libraries off line? Use referenced images, kept on my external firewire drive? Anything else? I've turned previews off. Should I get that extra half GB of ram (max is 2 GB)?
I really like the software, and want it to remain a pleasue to work with. And I'm definitely not in the market for a new computer.
    Thanks.

The hard drive on the computer is well above 50%
    full.
How full? There are no firm rules, but above 70% can
    be crippling, above 85% destructive.
The hard drive is 65% full. Sounds like I need to clean it up.
Will Aperture performance suffer if I move the
library to my firewire drive, or should I offload
other files to the external drive?
Please describe all the mass storage. E.g. FW 400 or
FW 800? What size(s) and how full? etc.
The external drive is FW 800. 500 GB, pretty much empty right now.
What about using referenced files or multiple
libraries? If I'm working with perhaps 10,000 or
20,000 pictures (down the road) should I worry
    about
breaking them up into multiple libraries?
There are many pros/cons (see previous threads) and
version 2.0 may provide new guidance/choices.
Personally IMO Referenced images seem to be a
necessity for laptop users. Desktop users have the
    option of huge RAID libraries.
I don't have the RAID option, but I do have the FW drive. Should I go that route (libraries on the FW drive), but not referenced images?
Half a GB of additional ram is worth it, huh?
IMO yes, but it comes down to your individual
financial decision. I have always recommended against
iMacs for Aperture due to RAM limitations.
I guess for me the issue is not one of selecting an iMac for Aperture, but rather the approach to maximize the performance now that I've chosen Aperture for my iMac.
    Thanks.

It's impossible to make definitive recommendations on performance improvement based on the limited information provided (in particular the absence of APEX debug traces and SQL execution plans), and lacking knowledge of the application  requirements and access to real data.
As noted above, this is mainly a matter of data model and application design rather than a problem with APEX.
Based on what has been made available on apex.oracle.com, taking action on the following points may improve performance.
I have concerns about the data model. The multiple DMS_TOPMGT_MASTER.NWM_DOC_LVL_0x_COD_NUM columns are indications of incomplete normalization, and the use of the DMS_TOPMGT_DETAILS table hints at an EAV model. Look at normalizing the model so that the WM_DOC_LVL_0x_COD_NUM relationship data can be retrieved using a single join rather than multiple scalar subqueries. Store 1:1 document attributes as column values in DMS_TOPMGT_MASTER rather than rows in DMS_TOPMGT_DETAILS.
There are no statistics on any of the application tables. Make sure statistics are gathered and kept up to date to enable the optimizer to determine correct execution plans.
There are no indexes on any of the FK columns or search columns. Create indexes on FK columns to improve join performance, and on searched columns to improve search performance.
More than 50% of the columns in the report query are hidden and not apparently used anywhere in the report. Why is this? A number of these columns are retrieved using scalar subqueries, which will adversely impact performance in a query processing 1 million+ rows. Remove any unnecessary columns from the report query.
A number of functions are applied to columns in the report query. These will incur processing time for the functions themselves and context switching overhead in the case of the non-kernel dbms_lob.get_length calls. Remove these function calls from the query and replace them with alternative processing that will not impact query performance, particularly the use of APEX column attributes that will only apply transformations to values that are actually displayed, rather than to all rows processed in the query.
Remove to_char calls from date columns and format them using date format masks in column attributes.
Remove decode/case switches. Replace this logic using Display as Text (based on LOV, escape special characters) display types based on appropriate LOVs.
Remove the dbms_lob.get_length calls. Instead add a file length column to the table, compute the file size when files are added/modified using your application or a trigger, and use this as the BLOB column in the query.
Searching using the Search Field text box in the APEX interactive report Search Bar generates query like:
    select
    from
      (select
      from
        (...your report query...)
      ) r
      where ((instr(upper("NWM_DOC_REF_NO"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("NWM_DOC_DESC"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("SECTION_NAME"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("CODE_TYPE"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("REF_NUMBER_INDEX"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("DATE_INDEX"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("SUBJECT_INDEX"), upper(:apxws_search_string_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("NWM_DOC_SERIEL"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("NWM_DOC_DESCRIPTION"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("NWM_DOC_STATUS"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("MIME_TYPE"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0
      or instr(upper("NWM_DOC_FILE_BINARY"), upper(:APXWS_SEARCH_STRING_1)) > 0 ))
      ) r
    where
      rownum <= to_number(:APXWS_MAX_ROW_CNT)
This will clearly never make use of any available indexes on your table. If you only want users to be able to search using values from 3 columns then remove the Search Field from the Search Bar and only allow users to create explicit filters on those columns. It may then be possible for the optimizer to push the resulting simple predicates down into the inlined report query to make use of indexes on the searched column.
I have created a copy of your search page on page 33 of your app and created an After Regions page process that will create Debug entries containing the complete IR query and bind variables used so they can be extracted for easier performance analysis and tuning outside of APEX. You can copy this to your local app and modify the page and region ID parameters as required.

  • Azure Backup performance is very slow.

I am trying to replace an vendor solution with Azure Backup but the performance is so slow, I cant get back to complete. I believe we have plenty of bandwidth to do the backup and we are not going thru a proxy.  For example, I had a backup run for 24
hours, and the got loss the 1GB backed up and had a message about obengine and port 6049.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi,
    Thanks for posting here!
It seems like you are pulling data over an Internet connection, versus accessing the data locally.
In addition Azure is a service-based platform of shared resources, and this means that two types of latencies or interruptions regularly occur.
The first is the time taken to make a request and receive a response over the internet. Since those requests and responses can travel through any number of routers before they return to the client, timeouts and disconnections are more frequent than in local,
    fixed networks.
The second is the time it takes for a shared-resource system like Azure to create backup versions of data for durability and to replace and reroute requests to any removed instances. These latencies and failures are important to understand how to compensate
to achieve any performance requirements in the application. Load testing at a real-world level will give you more information about the latencies that you see.

  • Macbook pro performance is very slow

Mac book Pro system performance is very slow.

Reinstall OS X if you've never done this before:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
An even better choice is to wipe the drive and reinstall Leopard from scratch. Make a backup first, then restore your files from the backup.

  • My performance is very slow when I run graphs. How do I increase the speed at which I can do other things while the data is being updated and displayed on the graphs?

I am doing an an aquisition and displaying the data on graphs. When I run the program it is slow. I think because I have the number of scans to read associated with my scan rate. It takes the number of seconds I want to display on the chart times the scan rate and feeds that into the number of samples to read at a time from the AI read. The problem is that it stalls until the data points are aquired and displayed so I cannot click or change values on the front panel until the updates occur on the graph. What can I do to be able to help this?

  • Gmail performance is very slow in Firefox 4.

Gmail performance is very slow in Firefox 4 and much slower when compared to performance in Firefox 3.6.x After clicking a button within the Gmail interface (e.g. refresh, opening an email, sending an email etc.) there is a noticeable wait time in Firefox 4. In Firefox 3.6 and actually in any/all previous versions of Firefox, this was not the case. Using same machine for Firefox 4 as I was for Firefox 3.x. Hi GoldMoon,
    (1)
Refer to your last posting, seems that you've created index which wouldn't help your query performance.
You need to create index from the field which supplied from your 'WHERE' condition. So if I follow your initial posting in this thread, your index should contains:
    - BUKRS (which will be compared with your company variable)
    - PRCTR (which will be compared with your s_prctr variable)
    - GJAHR (which will be compared with your s_year variable)
    - HKONT (which will be compared with your glcode value in your it_final[])
    - BUDAT (which will be compared with your s_budat range/select option.
And to follow the BSIS field order, the above index field need to be arranged as follow
    - BUKRS
    - HKONT
    - GJAHR
    - BUDAT
    - PRCTR
    (2).
Try not to use 'INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS' as it will increase table-memory overhead, but use 'INTO' and make sure the field list and internal table fields is in the same order.
So, once the index has been created, and 'INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS' has been changed to 'INTO' your selection should looks like this:
    IF NOT it_final[] IS INITIAL.
    SELECT bukrs
              hkont
              augdt
              augbl
              zuonr
              gjahr
              belnr
              buzei
              budat
              werks
              kostl
              aufnr
              shkzg
              dmbtr
              prctr
        FROM bsis
         INTO TABLE it_bseg
          FOR ALL ENTRIES IN it_final
    WHERE bukrs eq company
        AND hkont eq it_final-glcode
        AND gjahr eq s_year
        AND budat in s_budat
        AND prctr eq s_prctr.
    ENDIF.
    Hope it helps

    Hello,
The specific forum is dealing with printing software for Macintosh envoirnment.
It seems our topic is more related to the Windows OS and I would assume a server envoirnment.
I suggest posting your question in the commercial forums which should be more suitable for a such:

    Best of luck,

  • Performance is too slow on SQL Azure box

    Hi,
Performance is too slow on SQL Azure box (Located in Europe)
Below query returns 500,000 rows in 18 Min. on SQL Azure box (connected via SSMS, located in India)
    SELECT * FROM TABLE_1
Whereas, on local server it returns 500,000 rows in (30 sec.)
    SQL Azure configuration:
    Service Tier/Performance Level : Premium/P1
    DTU       : 100
    MAX DB Size : 500GB
    Max Worker Threads : 200
    Max Sessions     : 2400
Benchmark Transaction Rate      : 105 transactions per second
    Predictability : Best
Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
Can you please explain in a little more detail the scenario you testing? Are you comparing a SQL Database in Europe against a SQL Database in India? Or a SQL Database with a local, on-premise SQL Server installation?
In case of the first scenario, the roundtrip latency for the connection to the datacenter might play a role.
If you are comparing to a local installation, please note that you might be running against completely different hardware specifications and without network delay, resulting in very different results.
In both cases you can use the below blog post to assess the resource utilization of the SQL Database during the operation:
    http://azure.microsoft.com/blog/2014/09/11/azure-sql-database-introduces-new-near-real-time-performance-metrics/
If the DB utilizes up to 100% you might have to consider to upgrade to a higher performance level to achieve the throughput you are looking for.
    Thanks,
    Jan

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?
