Aperture 3 - Viveza 2
I have been having trouble with a Nik software plugin called viveza 2, for Apeture 3.
Since installation, Viveza 2 rarely starts up. When an image is selected to be edited with Viveza 2, the plugin won't run. If selected again, the plugin sometimes opens but without the image that was selected. If I try to open it a third of fourth time imediatly following the previous, it may run, but often freezing, or crashing halfway through an edit.
I am running Aperture 3.3 on a macbook pro with 2GHz intel i7 processor and 8GB ram.
I use the Nik software complete collection and all other plugins work fine.
Viveza Launches fine from the Apps folder but not from within aperture.
Has anyone else had tihs problem or something similar?
It could be that the version of Viveza 2 that you installed is the 32-bit version. Aperture doesn't support 32-bit plug-ins anymore. I'd try to see if there's an update to the plug-in or if there's a different install option you can use to install the 64-bit version.

Image cannot be rendered because Aperture does not support image format
Dear all,
I have installed apple Aperture 3.03 and the complete Nick software plug-in selection:
• Dfine 2.0 for Aperture
• Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete for Aperture
• Silver Efex Pro for Aperture
• Sharpener Pro 3.0 for Aperture
• Viveza 2 for Aperture
History
Until a few days ago the system was running ok / no notable issues on performance. / all pug in seem to run good / no issues. Also
• I Run OSX10.4/ Aperture 3.03 ( 32Bit mode)
• My library contains just over 10000 images / approximately 140GB
• I have recently updated the OSX software update including the security update 2010-005
• as well as the Snow leopard graphic update 1.0
• As far as I am aware all updates where automatically recommended by OSX Software update ( no manual intervention).
• As far as I remember after update the system still was running ok but honestly I can not tell you how many times the Nick Plug in started out of Aperture.
After all, Several times I continued using the system / still no noticeable problem until the following was happening:
Problem:
After creating with "PT gui" a panoramic image File type: "TIF" Pixel size: 5112 × 2556 (13,1 MP) I imputed this file in to Aperture (drag and drop). During the attempt to eddied this file with "Nick Define 2.0" the system was hamming up No response for several minutes from Dfine 2.0 / Aperture" At the end I had to "force quit" the applications.
After the consequential reopening of Aperture I tried again to eddied images with any Nick software Plug-In but each time Aperture prepares any image previously stored in my Library ti open the Pug in the following Error message appears:
*"This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format"*
Currently non of my previously in the library safed images can be opened in a Nick software Plug-In this applies to all file types I have tied " Raw, tif, jpg"
• I am still able to eddied normally with Aperture ( so far I do not find any other issue)
• A newly imported Raw image after being taken with my EOS 5D can be edited in the completed Nick software Plug-In selection ( so far I do not find any other issue)
The following actions have been taken to overcome the issue (all not successful):
• I restored my Library out of my back Up ( to previous time of event ( no Time machine back up)
• Uninstallation of all Nick software Plug-In selection
• Uninstallation Aperture Reinstallation Aperture / Nick software Plug-In selection
• Repairing the library ( all three possibilities)
• installation of latest EOS utilitys
Questions
• Can you support me to overcome this issue?
• Have you heard similar issues of Nick user Running the Aperture plug-ins?
For me it is really strange that even after replacing the the library in my normally not connect back up the problem still exists (this should be not affected by the event as the back up was not done any more) / new imported images are editable with the Plug-In.
I would be happy if you could support me in this issue.
Best regards,
Matthias
PS: I have reported this issue to Apple (via Aperture feedback) as well as contacted the Nick software support and currently waiting for feedback.

I have just had the same problem
I use
• Aperture 3.03 with a iMac 2.8 Intel Core 2 Duo with all files on external hard disks (mac extended fomat as apple suggests) with referenced masters.
• Camera Nikon D300, with probably 75,000+ images on 2 hard drives
• Photoshop CS2 with PhotoTools 2.5 plugin
This has been working perfectly until yesterday when the system froze when I was using PhotoTools 2.5 with Photoshop CS2 - as a result of which I resorted to a force quit.
Since then on most of my files it has not been possible to use an external editor.
A message appears saying: *Editing Error - This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support image format*.
The problem seems to apply to the attempted use of any external editor (including Noise Ninja)
The following have each been tried, all unsuccessfully:
- Using each of Aperture's library 3 first aid options
- Rebuilding directory using Diskwarrior
- Checking for virus using Virus Barrier X4
- Defragmenting library hard disk using TechTool pro
- Changing permissions settings
- Using Disk Utility first aid to repair permissions and checking main disk
- Removing some plist elements when open 'show package contents' of library
- Setting up a(n almost clean) new system, with newly loaded version of Aperture, with a new library from a vault saved prior to the crash when the problem first occured
Several things seem to me to be totally bizarre:
1 - The problem is the same on the other library hard disk which was not in use at the time
2 - The problem still occurs when a back up vault saved prior to this problem is loaded - using a new hard disk with a new system and a newly reloaded and upgraded Aperture software
3- The problem seems inconsistent. It appears to affect some photos but not all. Even from the same shoot, some photos can be edited using an external editor, whilst others cannot (but as far as i can tell most of the photos in a particular album seem to be consistently affected)
4- The only way around it seems to be if I import a new (copy image) from the original master. Then everything works ok, and I can successfully edit that copy image in photoshop / phototools plug-in.
I am beginning to wonder whether what has been corrupted is Aperture's ability to make copies from the master file which it then uses with the external editor (I have no real idea whether this is correct)
Does anyone have any ideas or solutions - or has anyone else been suffering a similar problem?
Eric
PS: As a professional photographer this problem is a really serious issue for me - and I really don't really want to go to Lightroom or Capture One -
Aperture Freezing Up with NIK Viveza 2
I recently returned from a trip and began working on editing my photos using Aperture 3.1.2 and NIK plug-ins. Aperture has been freezing up when I press save in Viveza 2 after making adjustments. I have to force quit to close Aperture and begin again. Has anyone else had this problem?
iMac with 8GB RAM and 2GB video memory. (running OS X 10.6.7)
Thanks,
BillI've used the Nik plugins in the past and the only one which gave me some minor problems was the HDR effects one.
Do you have the latest version of Viveza 2 installed? How long have you waited after saving before deciding it was frozen?
One thing you can try is to run Aperture in 32 bit mode. Some older plugins could cause troubles if Apeture was in 64 bit mode. To run in 32 bit mode locate Aperture in the finder right click and select Show Info. In the Info window select 32 bit mode.
And of course contact NIK they might have some information about this and if nit I'n sure they'd like to hear about it. -
Is Viveza compatible with Aperture 3?
I have recently moved my digital world to a slightly bigger and faster iMac and have been experiencing some problems with Viveza. I had previously been using Viveza (v2.0.0.4), with Leopard OSX 10.5.8 and Aperture 2.1.4 with some good results. However, since upgrading to Aperture 3.1.3 and Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.8 I have been having problems. Has any body else found this? Mine seem to be, that after placing say six or so control points, the program just freezes and becomes totally unresponsive and the only way out is to force quit. I'm trying to nail this one, not sure if it is an Aperture problem, an OSX compatibility thing with Viveza?
Tim Campbell1 wrote:
Any Wacom tablet will work.
The Intuos line tablets have a few unique feature advantages over the Bamboo line, but Aperture doesn't take advantage of any of those features.
Aperture WILL take advantage of the fact that tablets are "pressure sensitive" -- so if you're applying a brushed on adjustment. Say you're using the "burn" brush to darken an area -- a very light touch will apply a slight amount of "burn" but heavy pressure will apply a much stronger amount of "burn."
If you're buying a tablet *just* for Aperture, then save yourself a few bucks and buy a tablet in the Bamboo line. If you also need support for drawing & painting apps, then spring for the more expensive Intuous line.
(Emphasis added.)
This is mildly misleading. Aperture takes full advantage of all but two of the Intuos4's additional functions.
As I point out below, for these reasons I don't agree with Tim's recommendation.
The Intuos4 is, compared to the Bamboo Pen & Touch (all based on specs at Wacom's site):
2x more accurate
0.5x more responsive
2x more sensitive to pressure, and
2x higher in resolution
All of those are taken advantage of by Aperture. Additionally, the Intuos4 comes with the TouchRing and six ExpressKeys, all of which can be easily programmed to execute Aperture commands. (The Bamboo has 4 ExpressKeys and no TouchRing.) Also, the Intuos4 includes the fully programmable Radial Menu, which can be a workflow accelerator for Aperture. (This may be available on the Bamboo -- I just don't know.)
My recommendation is that, if your are regularly going to use a tablet for making Adjustments and using Aperture, get the Intuos4 Medium. It that is outside your budget, get the Intuos4 Small. If you are only going to occasionally use the tablet with Aperture (or only occasionally use Aperture), the Bamboo Pen & Touch may suffice.
Note, as well, that Wacom's software bundles often completely change the value of some of their products. -
Aperture 3.1 takes incredibly long time to start
Since after the upgrade from 3.0.x to 3.1 Aperture takes a long time to start up. I click on the Aperture icon in the dock, the icon bounces for almost a minute, then it stays still for more than a minute, doing nothing and without the "light bulb" indicator that the app is running. It's just sitting there in the dock. After a total of 2-5 minutes, the Aperture window opens and I can start working.
I tried many things suggested in the forums to speed up Aperture:
I turned off Faces
I turned off sharing of previews with iLife and iWork
I turned off using embedded JPEGs from camera
I deleted all Aperture preferences as I thought there might be a corruption after upgrade
I removed all plugins from Aperture plugin folder to make sure nothing is interfering
I used the Aperture rebuild and repair options on the library
I created a new Aperture library and imported my photos from the old library into a fresh one
I downloaded and installed the Aperture 3.1 update again to make sure nothing got corrupted during update installation
Nothing helped. Aperture takes 2-3 minutes to fully start.
Plugins in use: NIK Software's Viveza 2 and HDR Efex Pro, Tiltshift for Aperture. That's it. And, as I said, it doesn't help if I take them out of Aperture's plugin folder so they don't get loaded. Problem still remains.
My library isn't that big: 29GB in 8230 items. Is 2-3 minutes a normal startup time?
Has anyone experienced a similar problem after upgrading? As I literally exchanged everything underneath Aperture (deleted preference files, created new library and imported photos from old lib) I don't know what else I could try. Totally uninstall Aperture and re-install it again?
Any suggestions what this could be?
On a sidenote, interestingly Logic Pro takes about the same amount of time to start. The icon bounces in the dock for almost 1 minute, then I hear the harddisk working for another minute until the splash screen finally appears. Logic Pro is loaded after 2 minutes and 20 seconds. I could boot my whole Mac 4x in that timeframe. To everybody having this problem. I found out what the culprit was. As a documentation here is what it was.
I read some posts here on the forums that mounted USB sticks or flash cards would make Aperture super slow while importing photos. I have Boot Camp installed and have a Windows 7 partition on the same drive as my MacOS. So, out of curiosity, I forced it to unmount as the partition automatically gets mounted by the OS.
Voilà! That seems to have been the culprit! Now both Aperture and Logic (which also had to think 2 minutes before it decided to start) display the splash screen in seconds and start like they are supposed to.
Make sure you have no drives mounted when starting these applications. This helped bringing down the starting time from 2 minutes and 20 seconds to just a few seconds. Of course, if you have your library on another drive you have to have it mounted. Maybe it only takes so long when you have Boot Camp and an NTFS partition. But if you experience lags starting these apps, try unmounting what you don't need. -
Aperture crashes when using NIK Plug-In
I have a Mac Pro 2008 8-core 2.8 with 16 GB ram and the ATI HD 5870.
Sometimes in Aperture 3 (newest update) when using NIK plug-in colorefex pro 4 it crashes.
It only crashes when performing certain tasks, like certain recipes. Or more often when I try to edit multiple images at once with the plug-in.
The plug-in works fine with PS, but you can not edit mulitple images at a time.
As per NIK's suggestion, I deleted any duplicate arial fonts but it hasn't helped.
Thanks for any help,

If the upgrade to 3.2.2. does not resolve your problem, try if running Aperture in 32bit mode will help.
I am not entirely sure if duplicate fonts might cause the problem - the last crash with nik plug-ins reported in this forum that were related to duplicate Arial fonts (Re: Nik Plugin Crash Issues) was with the viveza plug-in, not with the colorefex plug-in, also the crash occured when selecting the plug-in from the menu "Performing @selector(a_editWithPlugIn:) from sender NSMenuItem", not with a bad access when addressing the graphics card.

So your problem might be related to the ATIRadeonX3000GLDriver; maybe the plugin is still using an old Snow Leopard version, that may be incompatible with Lion?

Image quality of slide shows using Aperture 3 seems inferior to iPhoto '08
I haven't previously used Aperture. I've been using a copy of iPhoto '08 for several years. I've shot everything in RAW for the last several years and process it in
DXO on my Mac Pro (3 1/2 years old with 7 gigs of RAM). I then load the jpegs into iPhoto '08.
I downloaded Aperture 3 yesterday, and it certainly is impressive in what it can do for improving existing jpegs. I think I could do most touch-ups with Aperture
instead of Photoshop 3. Because of some glitch, I couldn't load or link to my 37,000 images from iPhoto but I did export about 4000 images as full jpegs into
a separate file and then imported these images into Aperture. Touch-ups are an order of magnitude better that trying to use iPhoto to do the same.
I'm an amateur and aside from a fair amount of print making and a few thousand images uploaded to a new Picasa account
http://picasaweb.google.com/jamesn88888
I enjoy a lot of my images via slide shows on my 23" Apple monitor, usually sequenced at 3 seconds per slide.
Comparing slide shows of identical jpegs run with iPhoto '08 and then with the files uploaded to Aperture 3 there is a very subtle loss of definition with Aperture. It's not so
obvious when viewing relatively large detail but is is very noticeable when running slides containing small detail. When both of these programs are just used to display static images full screen I note no difference in readability. Someone suggested that I check the preferences for preview displays. Sure enough, it was set for relatively low quality. I decided to re-do all 4000 images maximum preview display quality.
Using the import settings that came already selected on the trial software, the total size of my
Aperture 3 trial library was a little over 25 GB. The quality of the slide shows did not approximate
the quality of the slide shows of the identical jpegs included in my iPhoto '08 library.
I therefore re-processed all of the previews to the "don't limit" in the photo preferences. The total size of my Aperture 3 trial library grew from 25GB to 41.37GB, an increase of 17 GB. With 3926 jpegs in the library that means the average additional size added to each preview image was 4.33 Megabytes. Inasmuch as the original jpeg images that I imported into Aperture 3 were more in the neighborhood of 1.7 to 3.5 Megabytes each (I have DXO output most jpegs @ 90% quality- fine for my purposes), this is an extreme measure to take in order to be able to use Aperture 3 the same way that I used iPhoto '08. In comparing slide shows between the two applications I still get the feeling that there is a very slight loss in acutance when viewing the slide shows. iPhoto still wins out.
I think that I'm better off staying with iPhoto and continuing to do the RAW processing with DXO and slight file modifications with iPhoto. More elaborate changes can continue to be done using Photoshop 3 and Viveza. It's a shame, because I really like the image processing abilities that are contained in the new Aperture.
Have any of you compared slide show views on your computer between Aperture and iPhoto?
Is there any workaround for best slide show viewing- importing or referencing my existing iPhoto library of 37,000 images does not work for me. My copy of iPhoto 7.1.5 get the message that Aperture cannot import or link to iPhoto earlier than 7.1.5 (?)I think I've solved my problem with a Google Search. I came across a free slide show generator
(contributions requested) that shows much higher quality slide shows than either iPhoto or Aperture 3.
You click on a folder of jpegs and it almost immediately generates thumbnails and within a few seconds
I can be viewing a full screen, tack sharp, slideshow of all of the files in the folder. Much sharper than
I'm used to seeing.
I think I'll keep the Aperture 3 and use if for the purpose it's intended for in the future. I'll also redo the
image preview files to the small size it started with and then I'll copy all of the files I'm interested in from
iPhoto into a separate folder on another disk. I'll use Aperture to catalog and to perform image manipulations
on but I won't try to use it as an iPhoto replacement. I don't think I'll be using iPhoto much as an image
viewer in the future either after I finish moving my favorite pictures to the Phoenix Slides folder.
The name of the free program is Phoenix Slides. It's free to download and try, free to keep (though I

Aperture 3 and Nik Software tip
One of Aperture 3's main new features is support for 64-bit processing under Snow Leopard. Like many other posters, I have seen a definite speed improvement in 64-bit mode (the default). My Nik plugins transferred automatically when installing Aperture 3, but Aperture gives a message that it must restart itself in 32-bit mode to use them (you'll get this message if you select an image, right-click, and select edit in Nik Viveza or SilverEfx, etc). I wanted a work-around, so that I did not have to restart Aperture in 32-bit mode and lose the speed advantages. The solution is to right-click on the image and select "edit in Photoshop". Even though Photoshop is also 32-bit, this is a separate application, and so has no effect on how Aperture is running. Nik supplies Photoshop plug-ins with its Aperture plugins, so if you have a Nik plugin for Aperture, you should also be able to run the Photoshop version as well (requires a separate install). This allows the use of Nik plugins without the need to restart Aperture in 32-bit mode.
Good tip but people that have the Aperture only version are out in the cold. If this works for the Aperture only version let me know because I always advise people to buy the PS version - even for Aperture if they own PS.
The reason why is...
If you convert to a smart object and render the Nik filter all the settings and control points are saved as metadata and you can tweak them later - second if you run more than one Nik filter it saves a ton of space of only having one 16bit raster copy. third - the first reason in more than one nik filter is a huge time saver.

Ps. Batch is more painful but...

Aperture 2.1 is out today, with new open plugin architecture
See press below. Sounds really great.
08:30 28Mar08 PRN-Apple Releases Aperture 2.1 with Powerful Image Editing Plug-In Architecture
CUPERTINO, Calif., March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today
released Aperture(TM) 2.1, which introduces an open plug-in architecture that
makes it easy for photographers to use specialized third party imaging
software right from within Aperture. Available today as a free software
update, Aperture 2.1 includes the Apple-developed plug-in, Dodge & Burn, which
adds brush-based tools for dodge (lighten), burn (darken), contrast,
saturation, sharpen and blur. Over the coming months, third party software
developers will deliver image editing plug-ins for localized editing, filters
and effects, noise analysis and reduction, fisheye lens correction and more.
"The image quality in Aperture 2 has won over the most demanding
photographers," said Rob Schoeben, Apple's vice president of Applications
Product Marketing. "Now, thanks to our open plug-in architecture, users can
access an entire industry's worth of imaging expertise without ever leaving
Aperture."
"To date, maybe two percent of my photographs needed to be touched up
outside Aperture," said John Stanmeyer, founding member of the VII Photo
Agency and contributing photographer for Time and National Geographic
magazines. "Now that I can dodge and burn right within Aperture's new plug-in,
I can't imagine when I'll have to open any other application to tone my
images."
By clicking on one or more images within Aperture, users can choose from a
menu of installed plug-ins and apply specialized imaging operations to either
TIFF or RAW images. Apple is working closely with key developers to bring the
most requested plug-ins to Aperture such as:
-- Nik Software's Viveza plug-in, powered by U Point technology, which
provides a powerful, precise and easy way for photographers to
selectively control and adjust color and light in their digital images;
-- PictureCode's Noise Ninja plug-in that delivers advanced high ISO noise
analysis and reduction;
-- Digital Film Tools' Power Stroke plug-in that features a simple,
stroke-based interface to quickly mask and intuitively perform targeted
adjustments;
-- The Tiffen Company's Dfx plug-in that provides an expansive suite of
creative filters and effects;
-- dvGarage's dpMatte plug-in, which is a high performance chroma key tool
for creating seamless composites, and the HDRtoner plug-in that enables
the selection of multiple photos to create a single high dynamic range
(HDR) image; and
-- Image Trends' plug-ins that include Fisheye-Hemi to quickly and
effortlessly correct fisheye lens distortion, ShineOff which
automatically removes shine from faces and PearlyWhites that
automatically whitens and brightens teeth.

How to add more than 1 External Editor to Aperture 3?
I am evaluating Aperture 3...I have LR, CS4 as well as some of the editors from Nik Software e.g. Viveza, DFine...How can I add more than one of these as external editors without going into Preferences and changing Export every single time when I want to edit a photo with one of these?
Thnxyou always use ps for the external editor. To use the plug ins, you simply pick edit with plugin when you right click on a file to edit.

Best Plug-in/External Editor for Aperture Local Adjustments
I've been playing with trial versions of Nik's plug-in suite, Lightzone, and I have a version of CS3.
From the standpoint of making local adjustments ( hopefully something we will see in the next version of Aperture), which do you feel is the easiest to use without compromising results.
I sorta lean towards Nik's plug-in especially Viveza but would like to hear from those of you who have had some serious usage with any of these tools as with the trial period and being busy, there's only so much time I can spend on it. Nik suite is being bundled for discount and there's also a discount on Lightzone as an external editor.
Thanks,
LarryCS3 is a great external editor- If you want something that is really easy and quick to use the Nik software is amazing. The three tools that I use a lot from Nik (I use them directly from Aperture and in Photoshop on smart objects) are Viveza, Silver EFEX Pro, and sharpener.

Ps. I have a couple of reviews on my site just look up the product name [http://photo.rwboyer.com] -
Aperture stripping caption info using aperturetoFTPpro plug in
I have been uploading large jpegs onto another server using ftp plug-in with Aperture. But it strips the photo info, captions etc from the file, which is crucial information for my clients. Does any one know why this is happening, If I could ftp directly from iphoto or Photoshop elements even, it would be easier for me as I don't find aperture useful for multiple batch changes in file names and captions.
Currently I have been editing the file names and comments in iphoto, exporting 'version name' (other wise it exports the original file name) to a folder on the desktop and then importing these files into aperture where I use a plug in AperturetoFTPpro. I do have the export version box checked and not the 'master' box - By now i've lost track of which it thinks the 'master' or 'version' is!
not sure what's causing the problem, iphoto or aperture.
When i look at the metadata in aperture, I can't see the captions, but if i open the same file in photoshop and do 'apple i' the info is there.Have you checked with the Font Book Utility if there are still any font families marked with an exclamation mark as duplicates?
0 com.apple.ATIRadeonX3000GLDriver 0x000000010d97503f 0x10d91f000 + 352319
So your problem might be related to the ATIRadeonX3000GLDriver; maybe the plugin is still using an old Snow Leopard version, that may be incompatible with Lion?

Aperture 3 and nik plugin compatibility
any news of the update?
Nik has the following posted on their Website under FAQ
http://www.niksoftware.com/support/usa/entry.php?view=faqs/generalanswers.shtml#Aperture3compatibility
*Are Nik Software products compatible with Aperture 3?*
We are continuing to evaluate support for Aperture 3. Initial tests have uncovered some issues that we are currently working with Apple to resolve.
The following products are currently not fully compatible with Aperture 3:
Color Efex Pro 3.0
Viveza 2
Silver Efex Pro
Sharpener Pro 3.0
Dfine 2.0 appears to be working in Aperture 3 running in 32-bit mode without issue, however we are working with Apple to perform additional compatibility tests.
We will provide updates to all registered customers as soon as additional information is possible. -
Nik collection plug-ins are causing aperture to crash. Please help!
Hi everyone, I am running Aperture 3.4.3 and a while back bought Nik Silver Effex 2.0.
A couple of days ago Google emailed me offering the complete Nik Collection for free.
I upgraded but since then everything has been messed up. The plug-ins all appear in aperture but when I try to load them they either fail to load or cause aperture to crash.
I have contacted Nik/Google but all of their suggestions so far have been to no avail.
Please help as I use silver effex professionally and have a job coming up soon that needs black and white edits!
I am desperate here so any help is appreciated.Nik/Google are trying to work out the issue but have never mentioned any possible compatability issues.
Here is a crash log from trying to operate the viveza plug in

How will Aperture treat Nikon raw images which have been enhanced using Capture NX2 software? Some are cropped and "developed" and some have been enhanced using the control point technology. I have NIK sw as a plug-in in aperture.
Actually, there is a Nik/Nikon connection — but I am pretty sure it is irrelevant to the OP's question. The connection is that Capture NX2 was written as a joint venture between Nikon and Nik. (The name similarity is a coincidence.)
Capture NX2 is a cool program that incorporates the features of Nik's Viveza and Nikon's Raw processing engine, along with some other powerful image adjustment features. It provides, like Aperture, a losses workflow. Unlike Aperture, the adjustments (Edit Steps in C-NX terminology) are saved in the original NEF file along with the un-altered raw data. Multiple versions can be saved in a single NEF.
