Aperture import automator workflow available

I recently put together an Aperture import workflow in Automator which I thought other people might find useful, it can be downloaded with instructions here:
http://tonyswash.info/ImportPlugin.zip
What this does is act as a plug-in for Image Capture. When you plug in your camera and Image Capture launches this plug-in is available. When selected it will:
Copy some or all of the images in your camera to your hard drive
Prompt you for a name for the images (i.e. wedding, vacation etc)
It will then produce sequential numbered files list based on the name you entered (i.e. wedding-0001, wedding-002, etc). The default setting is to start from 1 but you can start from any number.
It will then launch Aperture
It then prompts you for a new project name (which is the default setting or you can select an existing project) into which it will import the images. You can also select so that the Images copied to your hard drive (ie those not in Aperture) are deleted
It will then close Image Capture
It will then eject your camera
Hope this is useful to someone

Yes, I found this out today. Any Finder Workflow that I start with "Get Selected Finder Items" does not work. Hope they fix this soon ...that's an important one to work.

  • Geotagging automator workflow - Aperture

    Hi,
Just came by to say that the latest betaversion of the excellent automator actions from Sigurd Buchberger works:
    http://scriptamac.com/geotaggingactions.html
...and I have successfully been able to make a workflow that lets me connect my cardreader and my Garmin GPSMap 60CSX and merge geo-data before importing into Aperture.
    http://homepage.mac.com/refsvik/geotagging_workflow.png
What I would like now is a plug-in that lets me import a folder of old .gpx files into Aperture and have Aperture merge geodata info into the exif headers of images that are already in there.
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

Testing this a little bit more, the solutions seems elegant. A one-click geotagging/aperture-importing workflow is what I have been wanting for a long time. As most photographers though, I am sometimes in a hurry, and do not have time to sit around and wait for the action to traverse a large gpx file and merging the data with exif in each picture before import can take place. With a lot of images this can take a significant amount of time.
I think an even better approach in general would be a plug-in of some sort (preferably inside Aperture) og import a folder of gpx files and have it traverse through the libary file at night merging data where exif date/time match with gpx entries.
Does the current plug-in situation in Aperture allow for such a solution to be built?
    All the best,

  • Aperture Import with Automator

    Hi
I have created the following Automator workflow as a Service:
    1. Import photo
    2. Evaluate photo
    3. Set IPTC tags
The workflow does fine until step 2 but stopps with the Apple Script error message that
"Parts of the expression did not provide a result. (-2763)"
The keywords I would like to add to photos to be imported do not show up in the
respective Aperture field (field at the bottom "Schlagwörter"):
What is going wrong? I can not find the reason and would be very happy for advice.
    Thank you very much!

I'm using a hot folder to import to Aperture as well, and also had the same problems when I try to configure it.
I solve it by creating an action in Automator that will copy all the images from the memory card to a temp folder when a card is inserted in the card reader. At the end of the action all the files inside the temp folder are moved to the actual hot folder, as you said this is almost instant so works perfectly.
So basicly the workaround is the following:
Card inserted - Image capture starts and copy all the images to a temp folder - Images then move to Aperture's hot folder - Aperture gets all the images.

  • Accessing Automator workflow from *within* iPhoto

I have quite a few Automator workflows that I’d like to apply to a number of selected images right within iPhoto’s main window.
Is there any other way than the usual export/re-import?

Using that Automator workflow will add another layer of jpeg compression to the file and reduce it a fair amount. There's an applescript that will convert to sRGB without reducing the file size. You can download it from Toad's Cellar. It will convert all files within an folder that's dropped onto it. If the file reduction isn't of concern to you then use the Automator workflow. I have one on Toad's Cellar that will add the sRGB profile to all files within a folder and its subfolders. You could do the entire Originals folder in the library in one pass that way. You can download it and see if it differers from you workflow in any significant manner.
NOTE: Neither of the two above will work with grayscale files. There is one that will convert files to jpg, RGB mode, and embed the profile available at Toad's Cellar, however.
I may be preaching to the choir here but here's some tips on using PS with and within iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • Old Toad's automator workflow to backup Library6.iPhoto database

    Dear Old Toad,
I just today downloaded your workflow to backup the iPhoto database file, and am having problems making it work.
When I run it, either from the dock or the script menu, it launches Automator but then closes without doing anything. I don't get a confirmation screen, and no copy of the database is created.
So I opened it in Automator to see if editing it would help, even though my library is already named iPhoto Library and stored in user/pictures. When I dragged it onto the Automator window, there was only 1 action (Get Specified Finder Items) instead of the 4 that show up in the ReadMe. When I dragged it onto the Automator app to open it, I got nothing.
I downloaded it via Firefox 3.0.1 and got a 1.1MB zip, and I tried downloading it twice in case it had corrupted in the download, but no change with the second try. Downloaded from here:
    http://web.mac.com/toad.hall/ToadsCellar/ToadsCellar.html
    Running OS 10.4.11, iPhoto 7.1.5, on a G4.
    Something else I can try?
    Thanks,
    Daiya

Yes. Run the application like you would use the Save command in other applications, often. Running it again will overwrite the current backup copy with a new backup that will include all changes you've made to your library, new pictures, deletions, slideshows, books, etc.
I suggested keeping it in the dock so you can quickly run it after any changes you've made to the library. Being in the Dock makes it more convenient than having to go into the Application folder and launching it from there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Aperture and Automator.

I have a web gallery (http://traceramc.co.uk/japan/viewerDynamic.php?id=CRW_1860.jpg&gallery=Meiji%20S hrine) created using php and mysql that allows people to leave comments on each of my photos - I upload images and thumbnails to a webserver and then run an sql insert statement to populate the database.
Now that I've moved to Aperture (from the Finder) for my photo management, I would like to automate this process.
I can create an automator workflow using the 'Choose Albums' and 'Extract IPTC Data' actions that will write information from aperture out to a textfile. In automator I can then create an sql statement using the information in this file. I then export the images and create the thumbnails ready to upload to the webserver.
Is there an action that will allow me to extract the EXIF data and write it out to a text file so that I can include it in the insert statement? If not has anyone any idea how to go about doing this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

The site where you picked up the 'Extract IPTC Data' is run by Apple's product manager for Automator & Applescript as a personal side project--presumably to feature scripts and actions written by people outside Apple.
It would not be difficult to create a script or action to write out EXIF data to a file, similar to what the IPTC action does. If you keep an eye on the script sites you will probably find one.
My personal list of scripts that I would like to write for Aperture is now so long that I won't catch up for months--if ever. Your idea would be a good one to add to that list.

  • Automator workflow install locations in Leopards

We have several Automator scripts we created for Finder in Leopard. Where do these go? I expect they should go:
    /Library/Application\ Support/Apple/Automator/Workflows/Applications/Finder/
    But I noticed this directory:
    /Library/Automator/
    And this one:
    ~/Library/Automator
We want these Automator scripts to show up in users' Finder contextual menu. More importantly, we want to manage these Automator scripts in one place (so they should NOT go into the home directory).
    Thanks,
    Don

    red_menace wrote:
The Application Support directories are just that - places for an application to put additional support files for it's use. The contextual workflows look like they would be similar to the Scripts menu, in that the items are defined and only work from the user's library. For a shared library of workflows, you would need to store them in an accessible place, such as Shared (or Library, but an admin will need to create the folder there), and then have each user copy or make an alias and place it in their ~Library/Workflows/Applications/Finder/ folder.
Users should no have to do anything if we push the *.workflow files to the correct locations. OSX is designed to be manageable at the local level, user level, etc. We have several *.workflow files that we need to push out to several dozen workstations. Each workstation can potentially have several dozen home directories. It's not possible (or desirable) to manage this deployment in a way that requires user intervention. I'm pretty sure a previous poster was right, that they *.workflow files belong here:
    /Library/Application\ Support/Apple/Automator/Workflows/Finder/
We'll do some more testing (I'll keep monitoring this forum). I'll also post to the admin lists to see how other enterprise management folk are handling distribution of *.workflow files in managed environments (where users are non-admin, on workstations bound to AD/OD). Once this is all done I'll follow up with this thread and mark it as closed.
    Thanks,

  • Import button not active on Aperture import tool

I have a rMBP 15" (early 2013) model, and I was trying to import Aperture library (about 300GB) to Lightroom using import tool.
However, as I try to Import, Number of Image/video files and Disk space required remained undetermined and Import button has not been active for two hours.
What can I do? Just wait?

I too have exactly the same problem (the "Import" button on the Lightroom plug-in to import from Aperture library is not available).
The import button on the Adobe plug-in tool to import from my Aperture library is not available.  It's greyed out.
I've tried the "repair permissions" option in Aperture ("Command+Options keys held while starting Aperture.app on my iMac).  Aperture appears to fix the file permissions successfully (no error messages). However, the Adobe Lightroom import tool still shows the "Import" button greyed out.
I've tried the "repair database" option in Aperture ("Command+Options keys held while starting Aperture.app on my iMac).  Aperture appears to fix the database successfully (no error messages).  However, Adobe Lightroom import tool still fails to show an active "Import" button (still greyed out).
Finally, I've tried the "rebuild database" option in Aperture ("Command+Options keys held while starting Aperture.app on my iMac).  Aperture appears to rebuild the database successfully (no error messages).  However, Adobe Lightroom import tool still fails to show an active "Import" button (still greyed out)
The vital statistics for my aperture file are:
      Version: Aperture Library 3.6
      Filename: Aperture Library.aplibrary
      Filesize: 136.08 GB
      # Projects: 403
      # Photos: 27,392
      Permissions:
        myself     Read + Write
        staff         Read
        everyone Read
This is very frustrating.  Did Adobe rush this import tool out too quickly without adequate testing?
Adobe, if you are listening please fix this issue with your Aperture import tool ASAP.  Otherwise, I and a lot more users will be asking for our money back on the Creative Cloud plan we selected and are now paying for on a monthly basis!

  • Automator Workflow for Mail Printing?????

How can I print out all all mail (250 emails) in a single mailbox into a single file, which I can save as a PDF?
I looked even for an Automator workflow that would
    Print; Preview: Save As
so that I would then have a serires of PDFs that I could then import all the individual PDF pages in to Acrobat to create a single document, but Automator does not have these options.
Any thougt would be very helpful. Thanks!!
      Mac OS X (10.4.2)

I don't believe you can do it the first way.
However there are at least three ways to do it the second way.
    1) Use System Events GUI scripting exclusively to drive the user interface i.e., selecting menu items and pushing buttons;
    2) Use some of 1) along with Mail's AppleScripting capabilities. GUI scripting would still be needed for Preview as it does not have AppleScript capabilities;
    3) Install the cups-pdf solution called "Virtual Printer" (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20219) that allows one to create pdf files from anything that can be printed using the print dialog. This would also have to be driven using one or both of GUI scripting and Applescript.
If you do a lot of PDF printing then I would recommend 3) and generally 1) is less robust than 2). Myself or others on this forum should be able to help with whichever solution you prefer.

  • Automator Workflow as Finder Plug In Doesn't Seem to Work Correctly

Has anyone noticed that if you create an Automator Workflow as a Finder Plug-in in Leopard it does not seem to work correctly or at all?
I have a two action Workflow.
    1. Get Selected Finder Items
    2. Import Files into iPhoto
When run inside Automator, it works fine. If I save as Finder Plug-in and use it in the Finder, it gets to the second action and dies.
I've seen other posts about Finder Plug-in weirdness and was wondering if this was another symptom.

Yes, I found this out today. Any Finder Workflow that I start with "Get Selected Finder Items" does not work. Hope they fix this soon ...that's an important one to work.

  • Only Import from Camera available, everything else is greyed out!

    Hi there,
A user of mine is using iMovie 08 and after I start the app and go into File, I only have import from Camera available, everything else is greyed out and cant do anything.
I have delete prefs from Lib/Prefs and ~/Lib/Prefs, inc all com.apple.imovie and iapps pref files.
The only thing I havent tried yet is to rule out if its just the users account by logging in as another user,
    Cheers
    newtonajn

This happens regularly for me (w. a FW800 card reader or with images already on the drive). I don't think it actually stops -- it just goes into deep background mode and does stop updating both the Activity window and the main app window.
I suspect some combination of limited hardware and a drive I/O glitch. I have never noticed it happened on Libraries which I store on external drives (yes, I do that) -- only on Libraries on the boot drive.
It (almost?) always clears when I close Safari. I don't know if this is specific to Safari, or that closing Safari releases the resources Aperture wants. I have closed everything but Safari, and seen the problem persist. Within 20 sec. of closing Safari, though, Aperture is back to steaming through the import.

  • Automator workflow help: Moving files

I am have trouble with an automator workflow. My ultimate goal is to create a image capture plugin that will create a dated folder with two subfolders for 'PNG' and 'JPG' files. Thus far I've been able to get the creation of the folder hierarchy I'm trying to create but when once action to import files from my device pulls the files I want I'm having trouble sperating the two file types into there subfolders.
As it stands my work flow consist of the following actions and variables:
    *Image Capture plugin work flow*
    1. New Dated Folder (Action)
    2. Set Value of Variable (Variable)
[Variable: 'Folder' So that I can ref back to this variable]
    3. New Folder (Action)
[Folder name: 'PNG' using the 'Folder' variable to store this new folder]
    4.Set Value of Variable (Variable)
    [Variable: 'PNG']
    5. New Folder (Action)
[Folder name: 'JPG' using the 'Folder' variable to store this new folder]
    6. Download Pictures (Action)
This is the point in wich I get stuck.
I've tried a few Files & Folders actions but I'm unable to parse by file extension.
(I've tried both Filer Finder Items and Find Finder Items actions set to the file extension but keep pullling all my files to one sub folder or the other.)
    Any advice would be much

The Filter Finder Items action should do it - for example, get the original items (and save for later), filter/move one set of items, get the original items back and filter/move another set of items, etc.  Be aware that the period is not a part of the extension, and watch out about mixing previous results into the current set if input items.  Each action has an Ignore Input option (where appropriate) - for example, when getting the original items from a variable, ignore the input so that the previous results (e.g. the path of moved items) don't get mixed in.

  • Automator Workflow Fails with Cryptic Error Message

I'm updating an Automator workflow for OS X Lion that I initally developed and used, without issue, in OS X Tiger. The workflow asks for a name, creates a folder for the name, takes a digital image with a Nikon D50 connected to the computer, and saves the image to the new folder. This aspect of the workflow works fine.
I then have a prompt asking if we should take another. If the user says "yes," the script should take another image and save it to the folder. This is where I run into an issue. When I attempt to add another "Take a Picture Action" into the workflow, I get the cryptic (at least to me) error message in the attached screenshot.
    Here's the text:
"Cannot update for observer <AMWorkflow 0x400458ac0> for the key path "parameters.name" from <TakePicture 0x403e3b0a0>, most likely because the value for the key "parameters" has changed without an appropriate KVO notification being sent. Check the KVO-compliance of the TakePicture class."
The language of this error would seem to indicate a bug. Any thoughts on a fix or the means to report to Apple?

The subject of this post is a bit misleading. The workflow wasn't failing while I was running it, but rather when I was editing it and trying to include another 'Take a Picture' action in the same workflow.
The workaround I found was to use a 'Loop' action on the 'Take a Picture' action. It's a bit more elegant and doesn't require multiple 'Take a Picture' actions in the same workflow.
Nonetheless, what does this error message mean?
