Aperture loses focus, even in other programs

I developed a new problem over the past week or so. I'll be typing along in any program when it suddenly loses focus. I can click to re-establish but, once it starts. it happens every 10-15 seconds. I think I've isolated the issue to Aperture. Once I quit Aperture, the problem seems to stop. When I'm using Aperture, it's begun acting strangely: multiple clicks required to select photos, shift-click to get a range doesn't always work, right-click menus pop up then disappear or don't contain all items expected (e.g., Export only shows "Project as new library" as a sub).
I'm up to date on Yosemite (10.10.1) and Aperture (3.6 500021000000000.3 RAW 6.02/Build 768.6), and I'm struggling to key the start of this phenomenon to any particular update (assuming Aperture is winding down and Photos will come soon?) I haven't tried to reinstall Aperture, although I did have a repair situation a couple of weeks ago when I had a white screen of death in OS X.
Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions beyond repair/rebuild? I've been exporting originals for a while with the expectation of changes ahead and will continue with that as best I can...

So, I had some time (and accumulated frustration) to check on this further, with no positive results.
I thought I might need to repair or rebuild my Aperture database. I tried following the instructions in the Help file (Control-Command-Click on Aperture database in Finder) but that did not yield the dialog to repair/rebuild, just launched Aperture.
I used Activity Monitor to try to see what was running, and I seem to get a process called "ReportCrash" that cycles into the CPU use column every time the focus changes. But, I haven't gotten the typical "Program has crashed. Do you want to send a report?" dialog. It happens every 3-10 seconds, and only happens when Aperture is open. I haven't tried reinstalling Aperture yet because I haven't had a chance to dig out installation disk stuff.
I may try to cross-post this to a Yosemite forum to see if it's just coincidence that it happens when Aperture is running.
Maybe it's just life telling me to ante up for LightRoom...

  • Type tool loses focus when toggling between programs. New feature or bug?

In Photoshop versions previous to CC, I could be typing with the type tool, then toggle to another program (or the web) to copy text, and return to Photoshop to paste. This is now gone, as once I toggle away, it saves the state of the text. Rather annoying, as I used to use the capability to paste bits of text.
A change that I believe coincided with this is the fact that text in the type tool is now saved when hitting the escape key. I also used to use this to try out different versions of copy, then hit Esc to undo the changes, whereas now, it saves it regardless.
Both of these seem like bugs to me. Can anyone tell me the story behind these?

I just tried with Photoshop CC 2014.1.  Here's what I did:
    1.  Select the T tool.
    2.  Type in some text.
    3.  Alt-Tab to another window (this browser window, specifically).
    4.  Selected and copied some text with Control-C.
    5.  Alt-Tab back to Photoshop.
    6.  Control-V to paste.
The text went in where I had left off typing.  I tested this with Photoshop CS6 just now as well and saw no difference.  I can't hazard a guess why that wouldn't work for you.  I'm on Win 8.1.
You're right, pressing Escape does preserve the typed text now, which is different than in Photoshop CS6.  Like you, I'd expect that to abort the text entry.

  • All other programs are slow when Thunderbird is open!

When I open Thunderbird, all other programs become very slow, including Mozilla Firefox. My programs work fine when Thunderbird is closed, and slow down as soon as Thunderbird opens. Why is this happening? I'd like to simply leave Thunderbird open all the time, but this slowdown of the system prevents me from doing that.
The programs (including Thunderbird) all work like they should, they are just slow when Thunderbird is open. Interestingly, Thunderbird itself is not slow at all, even with other programs open.

So you do not have an issue with Thunderbird itself.
You may have other programs working in the background or updates occurring.
Is Thunderbird using IMAP or pop mail accounts?
Maybe, you have alot of emails in several folders and therefore using alot of memory to run.
    Try some reorganizing.
'''If Pop mail accoun'''t, set up Archive Options and archive anything over one month old by month and keep folder structure; including the Sent folder.
    * see info: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/archived-messages
Then only open the Archive folder if necessary.
    * Create folders and move emails out of the Inbox into those folders.
    * Delete emails you do not want.
    * When Inbox is empty, right click on Inbox folder and select 'compact'.
Empty Deleted and Junk folders and then right on each folder and select 'compact'.
'''If IMAP mail account''' you could select to only download the most recent emails instead of all emails.
    * see info : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/imap-synchronization?esab=a&s=synchronize&r=0&as=s#w_configuring-synchronization-and-disk-space-usage
If you have a IMAP gmail account, do not subsribe to see the 'All Mail' folder. This is gmails archive of all of emails, so subscribing to this folder only doubles the amount of disc space used.
see more info under 'All Mail at this link:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_with_Thunderbird_and_Mozilla_Suite
By doing the above, you should have smaller folders and so use Thunderbird will use less memory.
Then you would need to see if this helped. You may need to check to see if you have other background processes going on that are not connected to Thunderbird.

  • Active program loses focus

Hello. I've been playing with a Mac recently. I'm new to Mac, but I've years of Linux experience (so don't feel uneasy about having me muck about in the Terminal with vim). I noticed that on this machine the desktop refreshes very slowly, and when it does the active application changes to Finder.
The program on-screen doesn't change, but it loses focus. So if my browser is the active application, it loses focus, but its still on-screen and no application appears "over" it. The Finder toolbar also appears in the toolbar across the top of the screen (replacing the toolbar of the app which had focus immediately previous).
This slow refresh and change of active application takes place about every 90 seconds.
The only change which I know that happened to the machine was the installation of DivX and Xvid (both from the official homepages). Both have been uninstalled since then. The DivX version was causing unhandled exceptions in Toast 8 Titanium upon launch anyway.

Hi Adrian, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Thank you.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
I note when I boot this way there seems to be no visual indication that I've done a Safe Boot. Is this to be expected? It seems I have the same issue in Safe Boot mode also.
I checked the startup items you mentioned, the timestamps on each of the files in those 3 directories are all 2005 - 2008. This problem has only cropped up in the last 24 hours though.
I note that when Finder becomes the active program that top show `crashdump` is topping the list.
I'm currently grepping my home directory for "crashdump". (although I suspect its likely its being run as a side effect). Next step, the logs and the man pages I guess.

the problem I have since I upgraded to Mavericks version 10.9.1
The problem appears only with Mail not with other programs, not even with my browser.
When I try to zoom the text of an e-mail I received or sent , I can no longer use the keys Command + to enlarge the text, although I can reduce it with Command -.
As I have a problem with my eyes, This is a serious matter for me.
When I write an e-mail, if I select text and press Command +, it just displaces the text to the right.
Now, my husband has a USB keyboard. If he connects it to my computer, his regular Command + does not work either, but  he uses the extended keyboard, then it works. Unfortunately, he needs it for a musical application which does not work with a wireless keyboard.

Firefox 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 use a process called, "plugin-container.exe" which was using up most of my CPU when I opened up multiple tabs that contained Adobe Flash files, and caused Firefox to lock up.
My solution was to use Firefox 3.5.10 which you can get from the Mozilla website at [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
I am using Adobe Flash 10.1.53.64 without any problem in this version of Firefox. Check the release notes, I believe it contains all the latest security fixes in "Firefox 3.6.4".
Hopefully, they will fix Firefox 3.6 in the next version (e.g. Firefox 3.6.7), until then you should probably use "Firefox 3.5.10".

I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro with MAC OSX 10.6.8, iPhoto ’09 version 8.1.2 and have downloaded two software programs: one is Aperture 3.2 and the other is Photoshop Elements 9 (which I got from a friend who didn’t need it).
I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.
    “Welcome to Aperture 3.2
Your library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of Aperture. Once upgraded, you will not be able to use this library with previous versions of Aperture.
Upgrading a library from previous versions of Aperture 3 generally takes a few minutes or less, though larger libraries will take longer. After that, Aperture 3.2 will upgrade your library's thumbnails, but you can use the application during that time.
Tip: To open a different library, quit Aperture and hold the Option key down while starting Aperture
    Current Library Location:
    Jadzia (home)   -----Pictures------Aperture Library
                                                      QUIT             UPGRADE”
I have heard horror stories  about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma.  I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?

Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop.  Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file.  For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Is there a reason I can't print wirelessly in Aperture? I am able to from other programs. When I try to print in Aperture, the printer tells me it's offline.

Aperture won't print a photo wirelessly. My other programs print fine wirelessly. Anybody know why? I'm using OS X 10.6.8, Aperture 3.2.4 on an iMac with an Epson Artisan printer. When I try to print in Aperture, the printer utility tells me the printer is offline. But it isn't. I am shooting in RAW, by the way.

I don't have much, but ... make sure you are selecting the entry for the _wireless printer_.  It's been some time since I did this — and a few OS's and Aperture versions ago — but I remember that there were multiple entries for my printer: USB, Ethernet, Wireless, and mounted to other computers on the network.

I have a problem that I can not load or even close the download in iTunes, it turns out I have hanging in the mode, and because of that I can't download from AppStore, because it turns out that the other programs I have on standby. What do I do? Thank you.

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.
    If that doesn't work:
    •  Log out of your iTunes store account.  Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
    • Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
    • After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

The Firefox window pops up on a regular interval (I think every 5 or 10 min) when any other program is being used, even when a film is playing in full screen mode from Firefox. It does not happen if Firefox is not running (i.e. it does not start by itself). The OS is Windows 7 SP1 and this begun after installing the Firefox update 5.0.1. Exactly all programs are updated with the latest version, the computer is clean according to Microsoft Security Essentials. Please solve this problem.

  • If exporting images for backup, to reimport into a clean aperture or other program, is it best to use 72 dpi or 300 dpi, or does it matter?

If exporting images for backup, to reimport into a clean aperture or other program, is it better to use 72 dpi or 300 dpi, or does it matter?  I want the best quality for any future unforeseen use.

I am somewhat reluctant to answer your questions after Frank Caggiano's excellent advice, but I really do not like to leave the question open, for there will be many occasions when you will need to export images and to understand how it works.
But please, follow Frank's advice, right now you do not need to worry about pixels and dpi. That is exactly what I meant, when I suggested to you to make sure you keep a copy of your Aperture Library and to back it up with all your other data, before you erase your disk for a clean reinstall.
    DPI revisited:
So, is the dpi setting only for exporting to print?
The dpi settings are necessary to define the size of a digital image, since pixels don't have any dimensions. And since you cannot print or display an image without knowing its width and height, you will need to specify dpi when you are printing or scanning.
If I leave it at the default 72dpi will there be any problems getting quality prints in the future from jpeg versions exported with that setting?
Not if you export with the original size - the maximum number of pixels available. That will ensure the maximum print quality.
The dpi settings are required to export versions; versions are derived from the masters and new image files are computed. When you export masters you get a copy of the original file that already may have a dpi setting.
If I choose "export masters", will aperture will export my masters just as they are?
yes, and  you may add IPICT data if you choose
Pardon my thick skull--I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks in this digital world!
No apologies necessary, we were all beginners once
Here is another example, maybe that helps a little:
I exported an image (jpeg) with three different setting: export masters, a version with 72dpi, a version with 300dpi and inspected the files in Graphic Converter:
The master was exported like this:
Notice, the master had already dpi settings, although I did not specify any on export.
The size is 51,48 cm x 38,61 cm.
The 72 dpi Version has larger dimensions, but also 10 Megapixels.
and here the 300 dpi version: smaller dimensions, same amount of pixels.

All other programs in CS3 work just fine.  I got PS to open last week when I got this probem, by right clicking and selecting "run as administrator".
I have run a "repair" through install programs in the control panel.   there was an error that some shared components did not install properly, (I only repaired PS, not the other program)
I have made sure windows drivers are up to date.
Turned off anti-virus when repairing install
Turned off anti-virus when trying to open
Googled and searched on web - found nothing other than run as admin - which I did - and it did not work.
Error message:  Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.  You may not have the appropriate permission to access them.
I am not a geek, but would appreciate any help, since this program has worked on W7 un until recently, and last week I got it to open by "run as administrator", but alas, that does not work today.
NANCY.  Thanks to any for assistance.

You need to fix the permissions on whatever "device, path or file" this erro message points to. This could be anything from trying to load a plug-in, access a device driver (printer, scanner, tablet etc.) to color profiles to your Photoshop scratch file. Impossible to tell. Check your Event Viewer. Perhaps there's some clue there...

  • Firewire DV output disconnects when I pop over to other programs

I am brand new to the Mac and brand new to Final Cut Studio, just bought both of them this month. I do After Effects animation and edit the animations with clients in the room, I've been using Premiere on a Windows laptop for years, and I've been told my workflow would benefit if I tried working on a Mac. Now that I'm on a MacBook Pro with Final Cut I've run into an issue.
Final Cut Pro 5.1.3 seems to be working fine, I'm editing DV video on my 2.33ghz Core2duo 15" MacBook Pro through Firewire to an ADVC DAC-100 analog/digital converter box, out S-Video to a 32" TV for the clients. However, once I pop over to another program, say Photoshop, After Effects, or the Finder, Final Cut's firewire connection is lost, and the TV turns purple, the default DAC-100 behavior when there is no firewire input. (It turns blue when I use my Canon ZR40 instead of the DAC-100.) Once I pop back over to Final Cut Pro, the firewire connection is re-established and my animations are back on the TV. I use several programs in conjunction with the video editor, and I need the firewire connection to remain on so the TV doesn't turn purple every time I jump back into After Effects, Photoshop, etc.
Final Cut Studio comes with 90 days support, so I called and Apple phone support told me that the way I have things set up is very uncommon and not supported. DV footage out to a Firewire device is not supported? Are you kidding me? The local Apple Store has several Geniuses with Final Cut Pro experience, they told me that the fact that FCP loses firewire connection when I change programs is "pretty much the nature of the beast". They recommended I use a DVI connector to output to S-Video out to the TV, but I'm already using my laptop's DVI to output to my 21 inch monitor, and I will NOT work from my 15" laptop display (or a 17" laptop display for that matter).
I called phone support again and they told me that if I had a Mac Pro I would have more options, but with a laptop my "special workflow" is not very well supported, unless I stay in Final Cut Pro and not switch programs over to Photoshop or anything else.
Here is why I feel like I am in the twilight zone: Premiere 6.5 in Windows automatically keeps firewire connection when I pop over to After Effects. Premiere Pro 2.0's default behavior is to lose firewire connection when switching to another program, but I simply unchecked the "Disable video output when Premiere Pro is in the background" checkbox to keep the connection when switching programs. Premiere has been able to do this for years, I have a VERY hard time believing that Final Cut Pro, which is regarded as the BEST video editing program, cannot maintain firewire output unless it is the "in focus" application. I have been through all the preferences, I can't find anything to alter this behavior.
If I cannot solve this problem with Final Cut Pro, I will need to find a DV/analog firewire box that defaults to BLACK instead of purple when firewire gets disconnected. Please let me know if anyone can tell me the solution to this, I have a VERY hard time believing that editing video on a MacBook Pro while monitoring on a TV through firewire is only supported if I don't pop over to any other programs.
Thanks in advance for the help, I am already $5,000 into this experiment of trying to do my animation work on a Mac and I will not be happy if I can't get things to work.

You're not losing firewire control when you switch over, you are losing the video playback. Even if you were viewing your canvas on your desktop you would still go back to a ragular screen when you switch apps. You would probably have to monkey with your external monitor to adjust how it responds to a lack of signal.

  • Password dialog box loses focus

I know this happens on my iMac Lion 10.7.4.  I think I saw this recently on my MBA with MtLn.  I do something that requires admin priviledges such as start a program install and a login dialog box pops up as it always has so I can log in as an administrator for the higher privilege.  If I don't immediately start typing the password (wait even a few seconds) and the focus is lost by the dialog box.  If I do a keystroke, I get a sound you hear if the keystroke has no place to go  -- the focus has not been set to any window receptive to keystrokes.
However, if I beat that time out, or more usually, click the mouse on the text entry field and immediately type the first character of the password, it isregistered with the dot echo and the focus remains on that field while I enter the rest of the password.  The only pointing devices attached to my system are the Apple Magic mouse and Apple Magic trackpad.  Both are attached by Bluetooth.
    Any ideas?

This was happening to my parents' computer too.  Each time the admin password was required, the dialogue box would lose focus in less than a second.  You had to time your keystrokes very quickly.
I reviewed in Console what was running and found that their dictation software (Dragon Naturaly Speaking Express) was the culprit.  When I turned it off, the problem never returned.  So perhaps it's along the same lines for you: that some service such as dictation software is causing this issue
Run your console log and place yourself in the very situation where it would normally occur and see what comes up in the logs.  For me it was com.dragon.express.
Oh, and to let you know, they, too, have a mighty mouse connected by USB and a magic mouse (by Bluetooth) and these were not the problem.
    Good luck! and Happy Holidays

  • Word 2011 for Mac Book pro - I have found that my cursor disappears sometimes when I click on a toolbar function. I found out it is a bug, that the Mac loses 'focus'. I can correct it temporarily by clicking on Format - Font - Cancel. Any info?

I have Word 2011 on a Mac Book Pro and have had problems with a dissapearing cursor - it makes editing tricky
After googling it I found out that there is a bug where the Mac loses focus if you click away from the document - it also does this with italics according to other users.
I had a play with it and found out that when I click on the toolbar in a document where this happens, the cursor disappears, e.g. changing font colour etc. And then, when I click on Format - Font - Cancel it returns
I'd be interested if anyone else has a comment to add, please do
    thanks

BTW (speaking as a Dad of 3 daughters in Grad school) if you don't already have and use a DropBox account, or some other similar online "cloud" based backup of your school documents, you should start doing so immediately. By keeping all of your important documents in the Dropbox folder on your computer, you have instant access to them from any other computer (or iPad), should you be w/o your computer while in for repairs (or if, God forbid, it is stolen). It's free for 2 GB of online storage, which is more than enough for a few years worth of Word documents, etc. (If you get other people to sign up via your email "invitation", then Dropbox gives you even more free storage space.) Every time you close a document, it is updated on the Dropbox servers (encrypted), if it is in the Dropbox folder (assuming you give it a few seconds to update before turning off your computer). Do a google search of "Cloud based storage comparisons" to compare the amount of free space each of the competing services give you.
