Aperture to Lightroom move, super large number of photos and videos

Hi everyone. I am moving my photo and video collection from Aperture libraries to Lightroom. Editing is so much better in lightroom, but with image organization I run in into tons of problems. The biggest one is size. I have around 500,000 photos and videos. I have only imported 7,000 and preview catalogs are getting huge, 16Gbs right now. Would love suggestions on large photo/video storage management.

Just one thing for now: preview data size is controlled by automatically expiring 1:1 previews (or manually deleting them), and making sure standard previews are no larger than necessary - they can be medium or "low" (not that low) quality, and do not need to be larger than your monitor size (and can be substantially smaller, if preview storage is a primary concern). Also, note: previews can be relocated to another disk if the one where the catalog has to be isn't big enough - just make a link in the catalog folder to where the previews will actually be - not recommended except as a last resort: generally better to get a bigger drive (or relocate entire catalog folder) if possible..
PS - Don't make 1:1 previews upon import unless you really need them.

I've been using iMovie for a while now to make movies out of mostly travel photos and video clips.  I try to vary the time for the photos from 1-4 sec., although most of them are 1-2 seconds so as to keep it short.  A friend of mine who saw my most recent product said that this is too short.  Any ideas out there?

I apologize for my confusion on your question.  I find that depending on the principal of each photo and my target audience to determine the time frame for each photo.  It seems most people get impatient with viewing one photo for more than 1-2 seconds if the photo is not complex.
If there are several things that interests the viewers in any one image, they want to look at it a second or two longer.  If the movie of images is a training aid, the images may need to be more than 3 seconds.  For intro's, or a trailer for a training movie, no longer than 1-2 seconds.
That was a long answer to say, generally speaking, I find 3 seconds to be an average time length.

  • Selecting large number of photos

I have recently installed ilife 08. When I am in an event and want to select a large number of photos, I click on the first one and try to scroll down. When I stop scrolling, the screen jumps back to the first photo, making it very hard to select them all. Anyone else encountered this and know why?

Usually I find that when I want new events the photos I want to use are at the end of the event -- if you start up from the bottom until you find the first photo you want in the new event select it and click split -- that photo and all below it will now be in a new untittled event. You can continue on up the event and do this multiple times if needed.
If this does not do it select some of the photos you want in the new event and click new event. This will give you a new event with some photos in it - then go back to the original event and select more photos and cut them then paste them into the new event - repeat as necessary to complete the "move"

  • Help in sharing a large number of photos?

I am looking for a reasonably quick way of sharing a large number of photos with other members of my church as well as on other occasions family and friends.
The photos are all loaded onto my iPad at their original resolution and are high quality .jpegs taken with a Nikon DSLR (D7000).
I would prefer to use something "cloud" based rather than a commercial enterprise if possible but don't know how to do it.
Can someone give me some suggestions?  I am a long time PC user and am pretty adept at Windows but a stymied by the Apple system, particularly my inability, seemingly to really delete individual photos without finding them all over again somewhere else on the iPad.  Delete "everywhere" seems not to be quite accurate to describe what happens.
    Thanks for helping me out.

Try sharing it via photostream. It makes a link so people with non iOS devices can view them all you do is forware it to their emails........
heres a link for photstream.  Good luck!

Follow the steps below to create a shared photo stream. Note that you cannot share all the photos in My Photo Stream at one time. However, you can select images from it to create a shared photo stream.
On your device using iOS 6:
From the Home screen, tap Photos.
Tap the Photo Stream tab. (Note: You can also share images from your Camera Roll or an album in your Camera Roll. Tap the Albums tab, then tap Camera Roll or an Album. Continue with steps 4-7 below.)
Tap My Photo Stream, then tap Edit.
Tap each photo you'd like to add to the shared photo stream. A check mark will appear on selected photos. Tap Share.
Tap Photo Stream. (If this is not your first shared photo stream, you'll need to select New Photo Stream from the Add to a Photo Stream list.)
Enter the email addresses of the people with whom you'd like to share this new photo stream. Type in a name for your photo stream. To share this photo stream on iCloud.com, move the Public Website slider to the ON position. If you will be sharing your stream with someone who does not have an iCloud account, you will need to make the stream public. People without an iCloud account can view the stream in a web browser. Tap Next.
Optionally, you can add a comment for your new stream to introduce it. Tap Post.
To share a Stream with someone who wishes to view it from a web browser, or to post a shared photo stream to Facebook or Twitter:
Find the name of the shared photo stream from your list of photo streams and tap the blue arrow on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Tap Edit on your iPad, then tap the name of the shared photo stream.
    Tap Share Link.
To share with Facebook or Twitter, Tap either Facebook or Twitter, and tap Post.
To send the link in a message or email, tap Message or Email.
You can also opt to tap the Copy a link URL so that you can post it elsewhere.

Does this involve iPhoto in some way?

I have a large number of photos imported into iPhoto with the dates wrong.  How can I adjust multiple photos (with varying dates) to the same, correct, date?

If I understand you correctly, when you enter a date in the Adjust Date and Time window, the picture does not update with the date you enter.  If that is the case then something is wrong with iPhoto or your perhaps your library.
How large a date change are you putting in?  iPhoto currently has an issue with date changes beyond about 60 years at a time.  If the difference between the current date on the image and the date you are entering is beyond that range that may explain why this is not working.
If that is not the case:
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.iphoto
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: to get to the "home > library" hold down option on the keyboard and click on "Go" > "Library" while in the Finder.
    Let me know the results.

how can I remove large number of photos on my iPhone 4s from iTunes using a PC - Lenovo Think Pad - so that I can reduce the space used on the phone by 50%?

You don't need iTunes for that. Simply connect the iPhone to the PC where it will be recognized as a camera. You can then select the photos you wish to transfer, transfer them, and delete them.

You should be able to do this via the iPad directly.  Open the Photos application and the forward arrow, then select all of the photos you want to delete and click the red delete button.

My iPod nano was delivered today.
I've just recorded some video but the recording has large number of dots and arrows in a grid pattern all over the recording. It's unusable. Anybody have similar experience?

Can't say that I have. Have you read the iPod nano (5th generation) - User Guide or gone through Knowledge Base for possible solutions?

  • Problems syncing large number of photos while choosing all photos option

I have 17,800 photos and have experienced problems with trying to sync in iTunes since release day 1.
If I choose to sync using the all photos option, the iPad will reboot during synch and appears to finish. Ipad will become unresponsive and hang with the apple logo on screen and a hard reset will then be required.
Then when trying to launch photo app in iPad it displays "updating library" for a minute or 2 and then photo app crashes back to home screen.
Have tried many options in trying to solve this including restore iPad software, deleting photo cache in iTunes, rebuilding iTunes library, etc.
Only solution I have found was to break down my 17,800 photos into events and choose to synch events instead of the all photos option and that works, getting all 17,800 photos into iPad. Photos take about 5.8 gb of storage.
There is definitely a problem with iTunes here in synching large number of photos using the all photos option and I have reported this to AppleCare support via two support calls. There does not appear to be a awareness of this issue in tech supports knowledge base and I am surprised to that there are not a large number of incidents reported as there are a few discussions started here on the issues of photo sync.
Hopefully this post will help others with the same issue.

Solved problem of synching iPad with desktop containing large photo library (20,000 photos): In summary, solution was to rename, copy and live iPHoto Library to XHD and reduce size of library on home (desktop) drive.
In the home directory, rename "iPhoto Library" to "iPhoto Global" (or any other name you want), and copy into an external hard drive via simple drag and drop method.
Then, go back to the newly renamed iPhoto Global and rename it again, to iPhoto 2010. Now, open iPhoto by holding down the Alt/Option key and opening iPhoto. This provides option to choose library iPhoto 2010. Open the library, and eliminate every photo before 2010. This got us down to a few thousand photos and a much smaller library. Synch this smaller library with the iPad.
Finally, I suggest downloading a program "iPhoto Library Manager" and using this to organize and access the two libraries you now have (which could be 2, 10 or however many different libraries you want to use.) The iPhoto program doesn't want you to naturally have more than one library, but a download called iPhoto Library Manager allows user to segregate libraries for different purposes (eg. personal, work, 2008, 2009, etc.). Google iPhoto Library Manager, download, and look for links to video tutorials which were very helpful.
I did not experience any problems w/ iPhoto sequencing so can't address that concern.
    Good luck!

  • I need help on back up and more storage for photos and videos.  I have a imac (500g) that I back up to a 500g hard drive using time machine.  How do I set up a larger hd and back that up as well?

I can buy a 1T hd to store photos and videos to, but would need a second one to back that up as well?  I guess I need to know how to get aperture and iphoto to keep my photos on a larger drive and how to keep both the imac and that larger hd backed up.  Note- we can't get  DSL, so off site back up isn't a viable option.

Move your photo and video libraries to an external HD. Apple explains how to do this in:

  • Can I send Edited Photos and Video from Lightroom 5 to Premiere 11?

I am new to Lightroom 5 and love the product. Can I export edited Photos and Video from Lightroom to Premiere Elements 11? I need more flexibility than Lightroom offfers. I want to mix Photos then Videos with different music files and create a DVD.  Thank You...Rory...

Also, can I load the Lightroom itself onto an external hard drive and keep all my images off my laptop? If I edit them, do the edits remain on my laptop regardless of where the originals reside. I think that's the issue that I'm running into with Aperture:  edits stay on my laptop even though originals are on an external HD.
Your photos can be on any hard disk, internal or external or network. If they are stored on an external hard disk, then when you import them into Lightroom, you select the ADD option and the photo will remain on your external hard disk. The edits are stored in your Lightroom catalog (as opposed to "remain on my laptop"). Once you import photos into Lightroom, you no longer want to manage them (move, copy, delete) using your operating system. You do all photo management in Lightroom.
If you transfer the photos properly, your edits, cropping, metadata, etc. will transfer to Lightroom, but I will leave the details to some expert on Aperture.
If I could offer some advice, I don't think you want to just transfer SOME of your photos to Lightroom. In my opinion, you want ALL of your photos managed by Lightroom, and not some in application 1 and some in application 2. This makes your life much easier when trying to find your photos, you don't have to think "Is this photo in Lightroom or is this in Aperture?"  (Note: this doesn't mean you have to import all the photos from Aperture into Lightroom in one HUGE operation; you can certainly do the importing in manageable sized groups)
