Aperture won't "quit" and processing very slowly

I'm running Aperture 3.4.1 on  a late 2009, 27 inch iMac with 8GB of RAM.
Since I downloaded version 3.4.1 I'm finding that Aperture is incredibly slow in processing smallish batches of photos (e.g. 60 x 15.5MB RAW files).
I've left it running for 24 hours and find that as soon as I try to edit a photo adjustments don't show up in the preview, because it's either "loading" (and never stops loading) or "processing."
When I try to quit Aperture either by selecting Quit or the little x in the top left of the window, nothing happens. And yet, I'm not getting any indication that Aperture is "not responding" if I open Force Quit or the Activity Monitor.
Very frustrating, as I'm trying to edit some photos for family member, and can't really do a thing.
My library is 421GB and not referenced (maybe that's part of the problem; I don't know)
Any sage advice will be appreciated.
cheers,
Nick

The first step did nothing for me,
You really could not work with a new, empty library from your account?
Switching back to my main account though and removing the user preferences did not change a thing though.
o.k., did you also try to remove your presets, not only the preferences com.aperture.plist?
The presets are in the folder:
~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/
and especially the Raw decode Presets occasionally are causing trouble.
Remove  the Image capture preferences as well; see this post by fof:
Re: Aperture 3.4 will not open after 10.8.2 installed
Quit Aperture, if it is running:
Open the user library by using the Finder's "Go > Go to Folder" menu,
enter    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost   into the textfield.
In the widow that will open, remove all files from the "ByHost" folder, that have "com.apple.ImageCapture......" in its name.
From the "Preferences" folder  remove "com.apple.Image_Capture.plist".
Then try to launch Aperture again.

  • XLA processing very slowly

    Hi,
when could XLA processing of a particular process can slow down so that XLA logs will pile up and clear very slowly?
Please note that during this time,TimesTen operation is normal for all the other processes.
    Regards
    Pratheej

There are many reasons why this might happen:
    1. XLA application not performing correctly (maybe not acknowledging often enough, not acknowledging at all, taking a long time to process records, not processing records etc.)
    2. A lot of log records for tables not tracked by XLA with only a few updates to XLA tracked tables (XLA still has to filter though all log records)
    3. System performance issue, SYS.MONITOR.LOG_FS_READS etc.
    4. A bug.
Detailed investigation will be needed to determine which of these may be the cause.

Select Force Quit from under the Apple menu and select Mail (it may say that it isn't responding).

  • Photosmart eAll-in-one C310a prints from computer and scans very slowly.

When I highlight a part of an article on my computer to print and then select print preview, it takes about 2 minutes for “as laid out on screen” to show. Then when I select “as selected on screen” it takes about 2 minutes to show. It takes about 2 minutes to change from portrait to landscape. The Photosmart eAll-in-One C310A Printer on my Wi-Fi home network takes about 4 minutes to scan one page. It used to scan fast. Something has changed recently to cause my printer to print and scan very slowly. I have Microsoft Windows 7.

  • MacBook Air has a dark screen and works very slowly - what is happening?

I have a MacBook Air since July '10, and until a few weeks ago, it seemed to be working fine.
A couple of weeks ago I wanted to update iTunes and GarageBand, but since I couldn't find my charger and I really needed to update my iTunes, I just let it update without a charger. It seemed to be fine and I think I either switched it of or left it on sleep mode overnight (I don't quite remember). The next day, I opened it normally and it worked very slowly, it kept freezing and that little colorful rotating ball appeared every time I tried to turn on a simple program, like Chrome or something. I restarted it numerous times (it froze so much that I couldn't even force end the programs) and left it turned off overnight, but nothing helped. A few days after that I backed my MacBook up using Time Machine and deleted stuff I don't need (I previously used over 80 GB out of the 100 GB originally available). I went down to about 30 GB of space taken up, and after that my Mac started to work fine, except for the occasional freezes. It still wasn't as fast as it was before (I couldn't open a few tabs at the same time in Chrome, or two programs at the same time, without it continually freezing), but it worked fine so I just assumed it was because of all the space taken up. The occasional freezes still annoyed me, though (plus I couldn't put pictures on it because I was scared that the freezes would occur again), so I thought I could reinstall Snow Leopard. It seemed to work fine, so I just left it there as it installed. A while after that, the backlighting switched off, as it usually does after a while. What worried me, though, is that even when I pressed F2 or moved the mouse or pressed something on the keyboard, the screen would not become light again. The light was extremely dim and I could barely make out what it said on the screen, but it was bright enough that I read a message saying that Snow Leopard failed to install, and asking whether I'd like to try again. I restarted the laptop and the screen was not only very dark (the white screen that normally appears was now dark grey), but it also took a really long time to turn on. A few minutes passed before the Apple logo appeared, and it took about 5 minutes (in comparison to the usual few seconds that it takes me to switch it on) to fully load. Naturally, it still worked extremely slowly and kept freezing when it turned on, in addition to the fact that the screen was dim.
Could someone please help me? I am completely not a Mac expert so I have no idea what the issue might be.

    Usually signals memory problem.

  • IPhone 4S doesnt show charge symbol and charges very slowly on brand new MacBook Pro. Not recognised by iTunes. Charges fine on Asus laptop. iPod charges fine on Macbook Pro...

    Hi!
I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having with my iPhone 4S and MacBook Pro.
I did manage to connect it initially and set it up with XCode as well as iTunes.
Today I have spent two hours trying to connect it to my MacBook Pro and I have so far found the following...
iPod 2G - charges from MacBook Pro, Wall Charger, Asus Laptop (works with both my Apple USB cables)
iPhone 4S - doesnt charge from MacBook Pro, but does from Wall Charger and Asus Laptop
                      - Asus Laptop running Linux Mint recognises the iPhone as a device with 'lsusb' and you can browse photos etc
                      - MacBook Pro doesn't recognise the iPhone as a device with the 'systemprofiler' equivalent of lsusb
                      - Interestingly, despite the charging icon not showing, the iPhone either maintains charge or very, very slowly charges
when connected to the MacBook Pro.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong? I've tried both the USB ports on the MacBook Pro and no difference. I've tried the 6 ports
on my old Asus laptop and they all work fine!
    Thanks for your help!

OK.. Went to the Apple Store - they could either book an appointment with a Genius.. or send the phone for
testing and repair. Found out I have a 2 year warranty on it so have a year left.
My research has led me to assume that the USB 2.0 function of my iPhone was faulty from the day I got it (it kept disconnecting the reconnecting but transferred data fast), but soon stopped doing that and ran at about 1MB/s - USB 1.1 speed - and has done this ever since.
The MacBook Pro somehow is trying to use the USB2.0 function and is not letting the phone fall back to USB 1.1.
To test my theory I found an old USB 1.1 hub... plugged it into the MacBook Pro... then plugged the iPhone
into that. Job done. Charging fine, recognised every single time I connect, and only took a few secs to send over my XCode app to the phone and runs fine! I guess this works as the hub forces the iPhone and MacBook both to USB1.1 mode which then works fine! Will just use it like this for a few months then send it in at an opportune moment (want to get some apps out before I lose my device for repair for a while!)
I will in the next week or so test my iPhone on my friend's MacBook Pro (we bought them the same day but I didn't get the Retina cos I like to be able to upgrade RAM, Hard Drive, and replace battery when it wears out). I will also test their iPhones on my MacBook Pro to see whether it really is the phone or the MacBook!
PS I will get WiFi Sync running since transferring 60GB of data over USB1.1 won't be fun... will do a full factory reset on the phone just in case there is an issue there - will post results of this too!

  • Computer games run and load very slowly

Even though the requirements for my son's computer games are met (we have enough ram ,space etc) his games run very slowly and when loading from one section of the game to another it is slow too. What could be wrong?

As stated above the more RAM the better, I dont know the minimum requirements for the game but seeing as it is a preschool game and nothing TOO demanding i would think it should run ok; but personally i would upgrade to at least 256mb of ram. I think that would be a pretty good middle ground for you since you are running OS 9, and in my area PC100 ram is quite expensive in large module sizes (512mb approximately running $80-$100) you could buy another 128 module or one 256 module to run with your current 128. But make sure you investigate all possibilities before spending money on any upgrades. I would check to see if there are any game options you could change to make the game run/load a bit faster. I hope this is somewhat helpful.

  • Why is Firefox taking up a lot of CPU and running very slowly?

For the past week my Firefox (and also Chrome) have been running very slowly. Any time a page loads the CPU column in Task Manager shoots up to between 10-20 when it's usually at 00, and it sends my cpu fans into overdrive until the page is loading.
Pictures load very slowly, and busy pages are even worse, such as Weather channel pages or Gawker blog articles. I've run MSE, Malwarebytes, I've run Firefox in safe mode, nothing is working. I'm really beginning to get frustrated because it's making any kind of browsing at all very unenjoyable.

Safe Mode didn't make any difference?
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update your graphics driver (Firefox uses your graphics card for some rendering, and an out of date graphics card driver can cause problems. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers].

  • My iPod Touch 4 responds and runs VERY slowly, it is probably not even a year old, is restoring it the only option?

My iPod runs VERY slowly, I preordered it when the first white iPods came out. Even typing here it can't keep up, I know if you have less than 6 GB left on your memory it supposedly runs slowly so I deleted stuff and have 13 GB left, I also always close my apps every few hours and my apps always shut down unexpectedly or even before the app can get to the main screen. I do not want to but a new one at all and my dad suggests restoring it and putting it to its original settings but I'm afraid I'll lose my smurfs village and tiny tower. So is restoring your iPod the only way to improve the speed or are there other things?

Try backing up the iPod and then restoring friom backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iTunes backup make sure that all you synced media like apps and music are in your iTunes library since synced media is not in the backup. You iPod will be like it was, included app data like saved games, when the backup was made.

  • Cannot install Mountain Lion - my iPhoto won't quit and Mountain Lion won't let me do a force quit

I'm trying to upgrade to Mountain Lion but when it ries to quit all programmes to install my iPhoto won't quit as albums are being sync'd.  I try to stop and quit but it won't.  I then try to force a quit and Mountain Lion won't let it.  help!

if you don't mind interrupting the album sync, you can do a hard shutdown of the mac by pressing and holding the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure it's all the way off.
you can then do SMC reset which is described in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after doing this turn on the mac, click on the black apple then force quit and make sure all apps are closed
open app store and try again to install the mountain lion

  • Mail won't quit and messages stuck in Outbox

Having a very strange problem with Mail on my father's Mac Mini. It is not my computer so I'm not sure what has lead to this, but Mail will not quit, and every message we try to send gets stuck in the Outbox. The version running is Mac OS X 10.6.8, and the version of Mail is 4.6 (1085).
I have tried removing all messages from the Outbox and then deleting Outbox.mbe. This hasn't worked.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes. Yes and yes. I don't want to sound like a broken record in these threads, but I got rid of Mac Mail shortly after 10.6. It became unstable and unreliable. I gave it another go with 10.8.1 and it was still a problem. IMHO it is a very weak client mail app.
Finally I had peace in going for a web client (gmail) and problems went away.
Just yesterday I spent hours on an unsolveable mail problem on my neighbors iMac. I finally just signed her up for gmail and imported address book and her old email server address. Simple.

  • Mail won't quit and won't receive messages

My Mail.app won't quit (needs to be forced quit) and won't pick up new messages. It does send, but it won't register as having done so. How do I reinstall it? I don't want to have to reinstall Leopard from scratch. It seems to think it's offline, because it eventually times out, but it doesn't say it's offline in the menu and taking it offline and putting it back doesn't help. Thanks.

    try the following:
    1) log in as another user and try to use Mail - if you don't have another user created on your computer, just create one as a test. If with that other user you can access Mail and work in it, then you may have a user specific issue. If you still have the same issue then you may have a Mail specific issue.
    2) If Mail works under another user, then go to application>utilities>disk utility and repair permissions. Then try Mail again under your main user account. If not solved then go to 3)
    3) Do a custom install from your Leopard disk, and re-install Mail only.
    hope this helps.
