APEX application development with an existing data model

Dear all,
We - as a company - are trying to build an application in ApEx with an existing data model. The idea is that the data model that has all sorts of TAPIs and business rules defined is going to be re-used in an ApEx environment. I am actually wondering whether this is possible, wise, feasible. When I am building some simple pages on one specific table, which has approx. 35 fields, sometimes the triggers around that table fail. Before I am actually going to dive in to try and sort these problems I am wondering whether this use of a data model in an ApEx environment is wise.
I mean, when you build an ApEx application there are usually no triggers and TAPIs available. My logic is that the ApEx application can look after validation and stuff.
Does anybody experienced have anything smart and useful to say about this. Any feedback is appreciated.
Kind regards,
-victorbax

Hey vik,
At my company we rarely use the standard APEX wizards because of multi-linguility (on data level) and error management issues.
We always create an API in PL/SQL and call the procedures for APEX making APEX the 'view' layer in a kind of model-view-controller architecture.
The main thing to keep in mind is maintainability, if you're working with an existing datamodel with an API that works it's probably best to just created forms and reports through APEX and then calling the appropriate pl/sql (packaged) procedure manually. We believe that this kind of architecture has the downside of being a little more work initially but it's much easier to maintain large projects through a self written API and take care of issues like error handling, logging and multi-linguility through a self written API.
Kind Regards,

  • How to use an existing data model using Business Components in OEPE

    I am a beginner in ADF. I am working on a project with an existing data model that uses Business Components (EO, VO and AM). I know that OEPE does not handle the creation of BC, so if I want to modify them, I will have to do that in JDev. That's fine.
    OEPE can create pages with drag and drop like in JDev. In my eclipse ADF projects, I would like to use the existing BC, to be able to use the bindings with ADF Faces. So far I have nothing in the Data Controls tab.
    How to import the BC into the Data Controls tab?
    JDev 11.1.1.6
    WLS 10.3.6
    Eclipse Kepler

    We currently don't support DataControls based on the ADF BC technology. We will consider such support if there is a strong interest in that use case.
    Independent of the IDE's you use, there are ways to expose services based on ADF BC that can then be consumed by the view layer. A Google search will point you to some of the approaches.
    HTH. Thanks for your interest in OEPE.

  • Error after deploying a JSP Application developed with jdeveloper

    Hi there
    Running Oracle Enterpride Edition 8.1.7
    including Oracle Http webserver
    I'm trying to run a JSP application developed with Jdeveloper
    through the oracle http server included in
    Oracle Enterpride Edition 8.1.7
    Think I have modified alle the .conf files correctly
    I get the message :
    "Error Message: java.lang.RuntimeException: JSP Registry could not locate runtime property file:ORDERS_ORDERS_PKG_ORDERS_PKGModule.properties"
    Of course I know ,this file should be deployed as well. I have done this.
    Any ideas what's wrong ?
    Or can anyone point me to a (proper) document that decribes (correctly and completely) alle the steps that need to be done ?
    Many Thanxs

    Yep, I had the same problem deploying from JDeveloper 9.3.1, followed:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/howtos/10g/adf_runtime_update_howto.html
    and it works! thanks for the clue! (now I only have to find out what ADF is now!)

  • Commercial Application developed with Oracle APEX

    Except the commercial application list on the official Oracle APEX web-site, anyone can give more information regarding commercial application developed using Oracle APEX?
    One I can find: XPinventory (http://xp4each.wordpress.com).

    I'm curious - is there a problem with the 15 commercial applications listed at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/apex_com_commercial_apps.html? What are you specifically looking for?

  • CM14 BI Publisher - modifying an existing Data Model, the Graphic View in Query Builder does not display

    I am trying to edit the default forms/reports that come with CM14, trying to edit the data model, data set, (to get to the old Infomaker style graphic view) , the Query model does not display (error the list of tables is too long..) Oracle tell me the limit is 60,  there are not 60 tables referenced in any CM report.
    Does this Query builder view work at all on any report?
    (bigger question, we are moving from CM12, should we move to CM13 which works with infomaker?)
    Thanks,
    Paul L

    Kurt, thanks for your replies.
    A couple of notes/clarifications.
    1.     You are correct that BI works better in Firefox--I have observed issues with the BI display when using IE.  I would recommend using Firefox too.
    2.     You are correct about the way to get to the Query Builder to see a graphical view of data tables.  There are basically two issues with this that I mentioned, but will re-iterate:
    a.  If you have an EXISTING query in the data set, then click the "Query Builder" button, this will remove the existing query that's there, it will NOT display the existing query in the query builder.  Query Builder works only to create a NEW query from scratch.
    b.  Query builder is limited to selecting 60 fields max in your query.  If you are creating a large report with many tables, you may find that 60 fields is not enough.  For that you will have to work in the SQL edit screen rather than using the query builder.
    I would impress on anyone developing CM14 reports that they become familiar with the database schema and relationships to avoid problems when developing your BI reports.  You should be able to find the tables and joins documentation in the knowledgebase.

  • APEX application problem with Apple's Safari browser

    Hello Everyone,
    I'm working on Apple Safari (version 4.0.5) with Oracle APEX 4.0, the APEX development environment is working fine, but when we try to run our application, after login, while switching tabs, our application hangs with the following URI in the browser
    xxx.xxx.x.xxx/apex/wwv_flow.accept
    and page is rendered blank, even the page source view is blank.
    Our page also carry some JQuery related code functionality, along with regular HTML and Stylesheet.
    No idea what is causing this behavior?
    Our application is running smooth with browsers like IE, FF, Opera.
    Sample applications provided in-bundled with APEX 4.0, are running good on Safari as well.
    So kindly suggest, what could be the possible reason behind this?
    Regards,
    Krishna

    Hi Patrick,
    Yes, I'm using my own custom made theme also involved JQuery javascripts & functionality on apex pages.
    I'm using Safari 4.0.5, didnt checked with the latest version yet.
    Yes I've tried it on Google Chrome, its working fine, except with the already know issue, that on each page's post-back, chrome prompts for the XDB Username and Password, which is also a very major issue with my application.
    I've gone through various threads from OTN to look out for the possible fix to this issue, but not helpful so far. Have tried few alternatives suggested on OTN, after which landed up in more complex issues causing my application to prompt XDB credentials on all the browsers. Now some how have brought the application back to the previous state, with the help of OTN indeed. Presently my application execute fine with IE, FF & Opera, except Safari & Chrome (XDB credentials prompt).
    It would be really not an easy task for me to replicate the same scenario on apex.oracle.com, because it involves various database tables too.
    I'm wondering, you asked me the 'theme' subject for the issue, kindly would you please educate me more, how themes can cause an improper functionality on Safari and not in rest of the browsers?
    Thank you so much Patrick, I'm partially relieved knowing that you responded me. Great pleasure learning from you.
    Regards,
    Krishna

  • Can I add more tables into existing Data Modeler

    My Data Modeler has been generated by SQL Developer, it contains 68 tables. Later I would like to add more tables into my current model. Is there any way I can add more tables into my current model without creating a new one from the scratch? Thanks for your help.
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
    you can add new tables using File>Import functionality - you can import from database or DDL scripts.
    Working in SQL Developer you can drag tables from SQL Dev browser and drop them on relational diagram. If Ctrl key is pressed while dropping then subordinate tables also will be added to the model.
    Here you can find tutorials http://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=44785:2:0:FORCE_QUERY::2,RIR,CIR:P2_TAGS:Data%20Modeler

    You might want to look at my blog post at http://tinyurl.com/codesign .
    Apart from that it might help if you could elaborate a bit more about the specific error you're experiencing. In my experience EVERY codesign problem is an issue of mis-configuration / restarting Xcode and can ultimately be resolved.

  • APEX application  version, author name and date  (history)

    Hello,
    I have created few application in APEX ,I want to add version, author name and date for that application's.
    Please help wherein I can enter in APEX like in Oracle form (pre-form trigger we can add.)
    Thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    Gaurav Nagpal.

    Hi,
    I have never used Forms, so I'm not exactly know what you mean.
    But APEX application definition have version attribute that you can use.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37097_01/doc/doc.42/e35125/bldr_attr.htm#CHDGJHDC
    And you can add author and date to e.g. application comment
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37097_01/doc/doc.42/e35125/bldapp_comment.htm#CHDBGHJG

    option1:
    The query should be same @ detail level, only the template has to be different for summary and details.
    @runtime, user can choose to see the detail/summary
    Disadvantage, if the data is huge,
    advantage , only one report.
    option2:
    create two separate reports summary and details
    and create diff data and diff layout and keep it as different report
    Advantage, query will perform based on the user run report, summary/detail, so that you can write efficient query.
    Dis advantage , two reports query/template to be maintained.

  • Problem with application developed with vtapi(Vt Systems) - events

    Hello!
    I'm developing aplication based on api prepared by VT Systems (http://www.cmsfx.com/en/trading-software/download-vt-trader/download-vt-trader-api/).
    This api is used to perform forex transactions. I've written a Web
    Service which connects with this api and
    alows other modules of my application to perform transactions. I'm
    using JAX-WS and Sun Java Application Server.
    This is sample of Web Service :
    @WebService()
    public class ForexService{
    protected static VT_API api;
    Checker checker;
    String userName = "***";
    String userPassword = "***";
    ConstRecord constants;
    public static IVT_APIEventsAdapterExtended events;
    public void initAPI(){
    try{
    System.loadLibrary("bridge2java");
    OleEnvironment.Initialize();
    api = new VT_API();
    api.setForceDisableSSL(false);
    events = new IVT_APIEventsAdapterExtended(api);
    api.addIVT_APIEventsListener(events);
    constants = new ConstRecord();
    }catch(Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    public ForexService(){
    initAPI();
    logonResult = api.Login(userName, userPassword, 0) ;
    System.out.println("Rezultat logowania: " + logonResult);
    checker = new Checker(this);
    new Thread(checker).start();
    @WebMethod
    public String getLogonResult() {
    return new Integer(logonResult).toString();
    @WebMethod
    public String getServerList(){
    return api.GetServerList();
    I'm using event listener which was attached to Java Sample in
    documentation.
    public class IVT_APIEventsAdapterExtended extends
    IVT_APIEventsAdapter{
    private VT_API api;
    public IVT_APIEventsAdapterExtended(VT_API apiInstance) {
    api = apiInstance;
    public void
    OnInstrumentChange(IVT_APIEvents_OnInstrumentChangeEvent e)
    super.OnInstrumentChange(e);
    System.out.println("instrument change - " +
    e.get_InstrumentID());
    public void
    OnNewServerMessage(IVT_APIEvents_OnNewServerMessageEvent e)
    super.OnNewServerMessage(e);
    System.out.println("Server message :" +
    api.get_ServerMessages().get_Items(e.get_MsgID()).get_Text());
    I've problem with listening events incoming from forex server. When I
    run Wireshark(Network Protocol Analyzer) I can see that events income
    to my computer (on different ports - for example: 2070, 2071, 2072),
    but don't income to Sun Java Application Server. I suspect that server
    don't listen on this ports, but how can I fix this? Maybe should I
    choose a other server? I've tried also Tomcat -with similar result :(
    Regards,
    Peter
    //Sorry for my english :)

    Thank you very much for the reply :-)
    We have been fiddling with the platform on many levels yesterday, and one thing we did do was bump that value up from 1024 to 8192... This made a HUGE improvement in ensuring the platform now holds the live streaming connections. (up to 8000 per edge)
    I think for other future reference and to aid other people that might run into this problem in the future, its a good idea to increase this value.  From what we have seen, read and heard, that default value is fairly conservative, its suppose to grow when the load demands it, however, if you have a large scale of connections coming in at once from multiple locations, it can happen that it grows too quickly which can result in the application to be reloaded (which disconnects all users, i.e. all edge servers connected to this origin).
    Another option we were recommended to modify was the following :
    In adaptor.xml you currently have this line:
    <HostPort name="edge1" ctl_channel="localhost:19350" rtmfp="${ADAPTOR.HOSTPORT}">${ADAPTOR.HOSTPORT}</HostPort>
    You can set this to
                    <HostPort name="edge1" ctl_channel="localhost:19350" rtmfp=":80">:80</HostPort>
    <HostPort name="edge2" ctl_channel="localhost:19351" rtmfp=":1935">:1935</HostPort>
    This will create two edge processes for both ports 80 and 1935. Currently both ports are served from the same fmsedge process.
    Of course this is not a huge performance improvement, but should further distribute load over more processes which is a good thing. Especially when there are that many connections.
    This setting can be made on all machines (origin + edge)
    Hopefully this could help other people also running into the same problems we have seen ...

  • Need a List of Files on Application Server WITH "Last Changed Date".

    Experts:
    I'm currently using FM 'SUBST_GET_FILE_LIST' but it does not return the date which I need because I'm working on something that needs to build an internal table of the files on the server with the oldest file on top (which means I need to sort by the date).
    I've searched this forum and there's several existing posts with different function modules and I've tried several but they either display an ALV grid or they do return an itab but it doesn't have the date.
    Please help and thank you!

    You can try:
    data: begin of tabl occurs 0,          "execute command on server
            line(200),
          end of tabl.
    call 'SYSTEM' id 'COMMAND' field com
                    id 'TAB'     field tabl-*sys*.
    where com is something like 'ls -al'.

  • One application module with 3 differente data base connections

    I have 3 different servers for data base connections. The main is "sys", the second "stanby" and the third: "bdbatch". In the old application,that i m re programating, uses a properties to read the connection. If the main is not available then goes to the stanby an then to the third. With this new application with adf i have to do the same. So how can i configure the application module to do this? do i have to make extra code? or just configure an xml file??

    i faced this problem before in Dynamic JDBC Credentials topic solution provided by Steve Muench (to make your AM Databse Connection to be dynamic as you need).
    http://smuenchadf.samplecode.oracle.com/samples/11gDynamicCredentials.zip
    Note : Example Contains the Full JDBC Connection String in dynamic way
    i finished this solution in my App and Successed.
    Thanks
