APEX managing XML data

Hi
Has anyone build an APEX app the reads and writes XML data held in Oracle, either as CLOB or XML DB data ? If so can you tell me how you did it ?
Jules

Hi Jules,
We are managing XML documents through APEX, but treat them as complete documents for editing purposes.
Basically:
1) We have a single XMLTYPE table hold all documents of a given XML schema.
2) When registering the schema, have a defaulttable annotation to create a link with the XDB repository.
3) Load the table via the repository using ftp (recommended for better error-reporting from database) or a webdav client such as Windows Explorer (however, we use Cadaver since the content comes from a linux server). Ensure the instance documents reference the registered schema.
4) Create a relational view atop the xml table.
5) Build a report on this view in APEX. This is for the user to search for the document they are interested in and to choose it for editing. The new 3.1 interactive reports are great for this.
6) Set a link column in the report that takes you to an editing page.
7) On the editing page we use a WYSIWYG XML editor ActiveX control. A small bit of javascript in the page header directs the control to the document via it's location in the repository.
8) When the document is saved by the control, the corresponding table row is automatically updated.
Some things to note with this technique:
1) The current set of embedded XML editors all have a problem with very large documents (blame the browser). Our way around this was to create a subreport that lists a bunch of fragments from the full XML document (aka subdocuments). When the user chooses 1, we extract that fragment to a temp file in the repository and point the editor at it. We then intercept the save and post an UpdateXML() call against the master document. For REALLY large documents/subdocuments, we use a WebDAV-aware client XML editor to work with the content directly from the repository.
2) You don't need to actually store the documents in a table. XML documents can sit in the repository and this technique still works just fine. Good for quick and dirty projects and the editing is very fast since the documents don't need to be stored into other tables, but you lose a lot of the XDB capabilities.
3) The repository will likely request a username and password. This can be hidden from the user with some javascript.
4) ActiveX controls typically need MSIE to run. However, other editors use javascript, or even java, so they can work with other browsers.
5) An ActiveX control wants a "click to activate", but that can also be overcome by referencing the object from a static file containing javascript.
6) Try to use a schema-validating editor so that it is less likely the user will try to store invalid xml.
7) Highly recommend a schema validation routine be inserted into the table's INSERT OR UPDATE trigger to prevent invalid XML from being stored.
If you want to work with the XML as if the elements were columns in forms, or don't want to use the XDB repository, then Earl's post of writing your own row processing seems like the way to go. You might also want to investigate INSTEAD OF triggers for your relational views. And watch out for large XML element nodes which exceed APEX size limits and which will require special processing.
Hope this helps.

  • Getting data via "XML Data" connectivity

    Hi,
    I need to retrieve data in Dashboard Design SP2 from one table stored on a SQL Server 2000. As I need to refresh the data I only have the option to use the "XML Data" connection (we are using BO4.0 Edge and can't use QaaWS).
    However, I am completly new in this XML topic... In which way should data be delivered so that I can use it in Dashboard Design (in Data Manager -> "XML Data" I have to input a "XML Data URL"...)?
    Thanks!

    Hi steve,
    Please refer below tutorial. It shows an example to create dashboard with XML file as data source.

  • Is it possible to use an XML Data Template to create a report in APEX?

    Hi,
    I have created an XML Data Template in BI Publisher passing one parameter and running two queries, then created an RTF Document Template to present the data.
    I can create a nice report in BI Publisher using the two elements. I have used RTF Document Templates to publish reports in APEX but the data comes from a Report region running a single query.
    I would like to run a report based in this kind of XML Data Template, in order to use several children queries related to a parent query. Is it possible to do it in APEX, or you have to use BI Publisher?

    </dataTemplate>

    Hi,
    I have the similar question. I used data templates in BI Publisher but now I want to use the same data template in Apex to print some reports.
    I tried to some examples but these were only using report queries. I also tried with the Web Service but this didn't work for me either maybe because I didn't
    used it in the right way. When I used the WS I received the binary of the report so the WS worked it was just the how and where to use it that didn't work for me.
    Now this older entry is BUMPED maybe we find a solution for our problem this way.

  • Managing Form Data XML files emailed

    I am exploring the use of the Email Submit button in a PDF Form. We need to collect form data sent in by many users. The one thing that seems like a challenge is that when people email their data back, then XML file containing their data will always have the same file name. I like the "Merge Data Filed into SpreadSheet" functionality, but what I'm sruggling with is how to best manage all of the xml data files, as they are emailed in, since the attachments will all have the same filename.
    Am I missing something, or will it just be necessary for the person managing the email box to extract each attachment & give it a unique name? I saw that someone has asked at one point is there was a way to have a unique filename for the attachment generated each time a user clicked the Email submit button, but it looked like the answer was No.
    Any suggestions for best practices when collecting emailed form data & collecting it all into and XLS or CSV?
    Thanks in advance!

    "Am I missing something, or will it just be necessary for the person managing the email box to extract each attachment & give it a unique name?"
    Yes. When they are detached from the email they should be given a unique name and that way you can build a dataset from the responses.

  • Query with bind var created under apex to generate xml data

    Hi all;
    BiP: 10.1.3.4
    Apex: 4
    DB 10G
    Goal: want to generate a report by running a query with bind variables under apex.
    problem: when attempted to create a query under shared components in apex, at the downloading xml data stage, I always get "no data found" eror. Thus I can't save xml data for further report work. This only occurs when bind var involved. I have tticked "incl. session variables" and added the item but to no avail.
    Does anyone know how to do this and get the xml data to recive the bind variable ?
    Thanks.
    lulu

    To get the xml data, sql query has to return something. Why the sql is not returning anything can be better investigated outside the BI Publisher with special tool like SQL Developer or TOAD. There you have to run your query and make it working. One of the steps would be to try the sql without the parameter, see what data it brings back and go from there. One of possibilities why the parameter kills the output may be the NULL values involved, but you need to try the sql outside the BIP first.

  • Creating xml data server in topology manager

    I am trying to create xml data server in topology manager.I mentioned all the required parameters in the jdbc Url.When i test the connection its giving this error
    java.sql.SQLException: class org.xml.sax.SAXParseException
    Relative URI "DEPARTMENTS.dtd"; can not be resolved without a base URI.
    I have mentioned absolute paths for both xml and dtd files.

    It's lokks like error structure in your xml file. Check it, open by IE and so on...
    See my connection string also:
    jdbc:snps:xml?f=../demo/xml/1/GEO_DIM_UPD.xml&ro=false&ldoc=true&case_sens=true&s=LEO_FIZ&dod=true

  • How do I use the Session State to manage bind variables & download xml data

    I have a Report Query with more than 30 queries; many have bind variables in them. I'd like to create sample xml so that I can develop my word templates. When I try to download the XML data Source for Layout, it doesn't ask for the bind variable values.
    How can I download the XML data without replacing the bind variable values in each of the queries?
    Thank you.

    If you are using the Standalone version, then first of all make sure to UNCHECK (BIP10g 10.1.3.4.1)
    "AUTO RUN" (it is under General Settings when you select your Report Definition)
    Next, you should define the parameters in the corresponding parameter Section.
    Its simplest form is of "Text" type so you will have to enter values at runtime.
    Then these parameters can be used in your query as bind variables.
    When you run the report it will prompt for parameter values. Enter these values
    and you would get a sample of your XML data.
    This should work and you should not find any issues.

  • Print-time XML data update?

    We're researching our options to print artwork with dynamic (i.e. data driven) elements inline with our production process.  We have a packaging machine that has an integrated inline printer and we want to send print jobs that contain dynamic data such as part number, lot number, expiration date, description, etc.  In the past we have used barcoding and marking software for this as it's designed to be either autoamted by a third party application or to pull data from a database itself.  On this new project we're looking to deliver or more graphically rich result.  We thought InDesign with it's XML backed frames may be an interesting option to explore.
    Something like:
    Production management system (PMS) generats the backing XML file with the job specific data
    PMS then retrieves the appropriate InDesign template file for the product being produced
    PMS prints the InDesign template file and the XML data is pulled in
    Keep in mind that workflow is based on reading the product specs and a few blog posts about InDesign, we are NOT InDesign users (yet).  There are a couple areas I see problems and I wanted to ask the community if you happen to know if they are real issues or not.
    I suspect we would need a full InDesign license on the PMS system in order to print the ID template files.  We would want to make tis all command line if possible, we don't want a tech to use InDesign but still I think a license would be needed, even just for printing.  Update:  I have since found InDesign Server and it sounds like it may be an option for this concern.
    If command line printing IS an option, will such an operation cause the template to pull in the XML data that was generated by the PMS?  In other words, the PMS generates an XML file in a location that the InDesign template is expecting, will InDesign pull in that data when the file is sent to the printer?
    Actually, is it even possible to command line print an InDesign template file or do we need to go through a pre-print processing stage to generate a PDF or some other file?
    I hope that these questions aren't too vague and that you understand what we're hoping to accomplish.
    Regards,
    Steve

    Hi Chorko,
    When you do your Conversion to Dynamic data, make sure you check your Start Time as Now.

  • Import XML data to textfields in a PDF file

    Can I use LiveCycle Designer 8.2 to auto populate textfields in a PDF-file with data from a XML-file when the user opens the PDF-file? If so, how will I do it? Is there any guide?
    It works fine in the Livecycle Designer preview but when I open the PDF-file all textfields are empty. It also works fine if I import data from a OLEDB-connection.
    Regards
    Mikael Forssell

    I'm looking for a solution for the same thing. I have a pdf form with fields bound to an xml file, but Acrobat will only import the data manually (Forms / Manage Form Data / Import Data) and Reader doesn't work at all.
    Tech Support says that when in Livecycle, you're working in an xml environment, so the 'Preview PDF' works. Acrobat and Reader aren't xml environments, so they won't display the data.
    What we need is a javascript programmer who can figure this out. Possibly using the remerge function. Anyone???
    Don.

  • Apex Collections and dates

    Apex Collections and Dates
    I made an earlier posting today on the forum titled “‘ORA-01861: literal does not match format string’ error after my hosting company upgraded to Apex 3.2.” The issue relates to Apex collections and dates. Prior to the hosting company upgrading Apex 3.2 from 3.1 all was working OK. It seemed a reasonable assumption that the issue relates to the upgrade to 3.2. Having tested the code against another Apex 3.2 installation I am satisfied that the issue is not with Apex 3.2. That said, I am still getting the issue on the hosting site.
    To demonstrate the issue to my hosting company and this forum, I put together a simple one page application that demonstrates the issue using the least amount of code.
    I created a page with an ‘On Load – Before header” process that sets up an Apex Collection with a single value of ’20-FEB-2009’ in the c001 element as follows:
    if apex_collection.collection_exists(p_collection_name=>'THEISSUE') then
    apex_collection.delete_collection(p_collection_name=>'THEISSUE');
    end if;
    apex_collection.create_collection(p_collection_name => 'THEISSUE');
    APEX_COLLECTION.ADD_MEMBER(
    p_collection_name => 'THEISSUE',
    p_c001 => '20-FEB-2009');
    I added an SQL REPORT region to the page which uses the Apex Collection as follows:
    select to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY') testdate
    from apex_collections
    where collection_name='THEISSUE'
    and to_date('20-FEB-2009','DD-MON-YYYY')
    = to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY')
    When the page is run I get the ‘ORA-01861: literal does not match format string’ error.
    If I remove the following from the SQL Report Region:
    and to_date('20-FEB-2009','DD-MON-YYYY')
    = to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY')
    and run the page, the date is displayed OK, i.e., c001 is converted to a date OK. This made me wonder whether it does not like the line to_date('20-FEB-2009','DD-MON-YYYY')? So I changed the where code for the report to :
    and to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY')
    = to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY')
    i.e., convert c001 to a date and compare it to itself. The rationale being that if the c001 converts to a date OK, then comparing c001 converted to a date with itself should not give an error. It did it gave the same error ‘ORA-01861’
    It would seem on my hosting site since the upgrade, that Apex and Oracle have problems with Apex Collection elements being converted to dates as part of the where clause.
    Now my understating of Oracle Apex collections in simple terms is that all Apex collections are held in a single Oracle table managed by a series of Apex functions. Given that all Apex collections are in the same table, could the issue be with the Oracle database when it is creating its execution plan for the query? Could Oracle be including the value of c001 from other collections (i.e., when c001 is not in a date format ) in the initial stages of its execution plan?
    I hope the above make sense and thanks in advance.
    Ian

    Scott,
    I believe I have found the answer the statistics on WWV_FLOW_COLLECTIONS$ and WWV_FLOW_COLLECTION_MEMBERS$. are out of date and Oracle is doing a full table scan instead of using the indices to select only the c001 columns that belong to the given collection_id. If I change my simple example to store the date value in c050 it works ok. (In all probability this will be the only collection on the hosted database to use c050).
    I have asked the hosting company to gather stats on all the apex tables.
    Thanks for your help
    Ian

    If I tried with double ' (not '' ) it works with SQL through SQLPLUS but not with java. Indeed I have to store the data through my application
    In java I get java.sql.SQLException: ORA-19102
    Many thanks in advance,

    Thanks for your answer. I downloaded the JDBC AddressBook application and I found it very usefull. I was able to populate a datalist from a datasource and show it in my application. My problem still remains in the sense that I am unable to show the KPI data in a "custom node" meaning I woul like not only to extract directly the database record to a datalist object but also put the information of a single record in a textbok and a gauge and keep control of paging. I think this is done with the parser in the other examples but I can not figure out how to do it with MySQL and the new Desktop screen designer. Should I use a clip object? or is that managed already by the desktop screen designer? or where can I find an example with the functionality I need?.

  • Using FGA in Oracle 9i on tables that store XML data

    Hello,
    Our company wishes to use FGA policies to log transaction data for updates that take place in our software (Web based software using Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition (9.2.0.6.0))
    This is working just great for logging transaction information on all of our tables except for those that hold XML data. It seems that the XML code is causing an error as it attempts to write in to an audit entry. I have requested information on the specific errors that are being generated, and do not have the exact messages to post yet - but I was hoping that someone out here could comment on FGA and XML data logging, if this is even possible in 9i, or if particular add-ons or updates may need to be made to the database before this can be expected to function as desired.
    Thank you in advance,

    Is the intent to audit tables containing XML or to audit changes to the XML? There is a huge difference.
    Also, working in software as older than my car isn't helping you. How about applying a few patches or upgrading to something supported?
