AppCrash on Server 2012 effects all users of .exe

We have a legacy application that has functioned on a Windows 2003 Terminal Server for nearly 7 years successfully.  We're migrating to 2012 Host, onto a 2012 Hyper-V Guest.
The Terminal Server (RDP) VM is running, and serving 50+ full desktops successfully with Microsoft Office and other relatively new applications.
We have two older (regrettably FoxPro) applications that are experiencing a weird issue.
When one user encounters an application error (AppCrash) it will effect the ability for all other users to continue running that .exe; and in fact they will receive the same error (Typically c000203, InPageError).  They each have a 'copy' of the .exe,
that they are launching from a directory in their own %userprofile%\AppData\Local\; but I think that some of the .app and other FoxPro dependent files are executed by the .exe from the Shared Location "C:\Server\FoxProProgram".
UAC is Off, and DEP is set to exclude these .exe files.  I have not tried turning DEP on for "Only Windows Files/Services"; but that might be my next step.
My question is, is there something in DEP, or another service (of Hyper-V Integration, or elsewhere in Server 2012) that does some sort of Single Instance storage (de-duplication) of binary/files in RAM (Memory) that could be related to this; and is there
a way to enable Process Isolation, so that each user has an isolated usage in RAM so errors from one user, do not effect others?

Hi,
Based on my knowledge, RDS has nothing to do with this. It may depend on the design of the App. It is highly recommended to use the versions of Apps which are compatible with Windows Server
2012.
Apart from this, you may try the following:
1. Use Microsoft ACT to mitigate the compatibility issues.

Note: Usage rights for App-V for RDS are included with the RDS Client Access License (RDS CAL). However, the App-V Windows Desktop client, which is installed on physical and virtual Windows
desktops, is licensed through the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP). MDOP is available as a subscription for Software Assurance customers.
Hope this helps.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS + User profile Disks + App-V = Explorer.exe crashing all of the time

I have built a new RDS farm on Windows Server 2012 R2 with two Session Hosts and a combined Connect Broker/Web Access server. I had the farm up and running with User Profile Disks and all seemed OK. However, as soon as I installed the App-V 5.0 SP2 RDS
client on the session hosts, the explorer.exe process started crashing for any user logging in via the Web Access site. The process crashes and restarts every five to ten seconds. It's the same for administrators. If they log in via Web Access explorer.exe
crashes, but if they RDP directly to one of the session hosts explorer.exe is fine. If I reboot the session hosts, then the first user to log in via Web Access has a stable desktop session (and appears to have a new profile as well). However, if that user
logs out and back in again, explorer.exe starts crashing again. The only applications I have packaged at the moment are Office 2013 and Firefox.
I tried disabling User Profile Disks, but this caused a whole bunch of other problems and I eventually lost the ability to log in at all via Web Access (errors about the user profile service). As this is a small pre-production environment I completed scrapped
all of the servers and rebuilt from scratch. Again, everything appeared fine until I installed the App-V client, then explorer.exe started crashing repeatedly for all users.
Has anyone come across this issue before? I have tried installing the App-V 5.0 SP2 Hotfix Package 2, but this didn't help. I have read in a few forums that App-V doesn't work very well with User Profile Desks, but I have not heard of this particular issue.
Similarly, SP2 seems to have a lot of problems, so I am going to try removing App-V RDp Client SP2 and installing SP1. I ahev also deleted User Profile Disks for the test users to recreate their profiles, but this didn't help either.
    Any other suggestions welcome!

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 - ALL HF's Failing to install as "Does Not Apply to this computer"

    Hi,
A general question about hot fix installs.
I have multiple servers that are all Windows 2012 R2. They do not have internet connections, so I have to install the Hotfixes manually. I download the HF's from the ISO download page (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/913086) every month. I collect them and install in a bulk install during a release cycle ( a couple times a year). I just realized that NO HF's have installed since JUNE 2014. Every HF that shows up in WindowsServer2012R2 directory fail to install with a message of "The update is not applicable to your computer". Which is fine if that was true, but.... I get this message for every HF from the ISO's since June 2014. NOT one HF thinks it is applicable to my computer. Could that be the case? No HF's apply to my Server 2012 systems since June of 2014?
This is my system info, and below that is the results from attempting to install 95 HF's.

  • SQL Server 2012 Always ON Users Sync

    Team,
We have a development cluster which is configured on Windows Server 2012. Recently we had an issue where the cluster failover happened momentarily and the roles were interchanged wrt to AlwaysON. During this process users lost connectivity and upon further
investigation, the users were orphaned on the other node and had to manually permission the users. Now that we have fixed the permission issue, please let me know whether this happens everytime whenever the cluster failover happens?
Also would like to seek your help in any user sync script which I can incorporate for the issue to sync up the logins.
    SQL Version: 11.0.3000
Any help on this is much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Sharath

    Hello,
During this process users lost connectivity and upon further investigation, the users were orphaned on the other node and had to manually permission the users. Now that we have fixed the permission issue, please let me know whether this happens
everytime whenever the cluster failover happens?
    This can be two fold.
The first issue is the logins, as the logins exist on a server level and not a database level. If the logins don't exist, end users can't connect - simple.
The second issue is orphaned users. When using Windows Authentication, the SID (security identifier) for the login is pulled from AD and stays the same inside AD boundaries. When using SQL Authentication, the SID changes and is not the same even if the login
name is the same. In the situation you had, the logins may have existed but their SIDs are different and thus the user->login mapping is not correct, hence the orphaned user.
In order to have this not happen, the SQL Logins must be created on all other replicas using the SID= optional argument of
CREATE LOGIN statement. This ensures that the SID matches across all instances and orphaned users will not be an issue.
I'm not sure how you fixed the orphaned users for the databases when they failed over, but chances are if you just re-linked them you're going to have the same issue as you did before when it fails again. You'll need to remove the logins and re-create them
with the current login's SID that is working. You can find the SIDs in sys.sql_logins.

  • Consistent Profile for Windows Server 2012 R2 RDP Users

Here is the info I used for customizing my start screens.
    http://microsoftplatform.blogspot.com/2012/11/predefining-and-customizing-modern-ui.html
As for desktop shortcuts and other customization. Look into Group policy preferences. You can add desktop shortcuts, map drives and customize a large amount of user settings.

I am playing with the Parallels 2X RAS product and want to set up a Terminal Server desktop and publish it for my users. I want the user experience to be uniform for all users that log on. For instance, I want default shortcuts to installed apps, desktop wallpaper, Documents, Pictures and Downloads pointing to their H drives (which is the home directory user share on the file server) and stuff like that. This is a Windows Server 2012 R2 server. In the olden days I would just customize a profile and then copy it over to the default profile but I have read that this is a bad idea. What's the best way to accomplish this? I don't want/need roaming profiles so I'm not sure where to go next. I am using group policy to tighten down the desktop quite a bit but I'm not sure how to complete the rest of my goals with a group policy. Thanks for...

  • Server 2012 R2 Corrupt User Profile Disks after RDSH reboot

    Hi,
We have a serious problem when using User Profile Disks, we have a pretty simple setup with a single RDGW & RDCB and the 2x RDSH with a folder share for redirected folders and another for User Profile Disks. Now if any server suffers a re-boot when users
are connected to it then their profiles gets corrupted and are issued with a temporary profile (we have a GPO to deny use of temp profiles) and so cannot log on.
I have searched the forums and found the following hotfix
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2896328 but this ONLY applies to Windows Server 2012.
Is there any published hotfix for Server 2012 R2, else we will need to look at another way of managing profiles ?
    Thanks,
    Donal

    Hi Donal,
Sorry to say but there is no other Hotfix related to this issue for Server 2012 R2. But you can try the option of deleting the SID from registry. You can find the below path and then search for proper associated SID with user name and then delete it.
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\ProfileList

  • Adding printers to Terminal Server 2008 for all users

Hi!  I'm trying to add a printer to a terminal server for all users that log in.  I've been reading around and this seems like a working solution:
    Rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /ga /c\\localcomputername /n\\servername\printername
So I ran this with the proper parameters.  Nothing shows up in Devices and Printers with the name I specified.  I rebooted the server, still nothing.  I re-run the command above and it tells me there's already a printer defined with that name.
I look at Devices and Printers and the name I specified still isn't there.  Why doesn't the above command work like it's supposed to?
    Thanks!

Thanks, yes, that was the first command I tried (without the /c).  All subsequent attempts tell me the printer already exists yet it definitely does not show up under Devices and Printers.  I ran the above logged in as Administrator with an elevated
command prompt.  The printer can't be seen from this login or a 'normal' user login.

  • Silent install of SQL Server 2008r2 for ALL users?

We ship an installer that does a silent install of SQL Server 2008r2 with all the 'right' parameters pre-configured. We use this:
    /QS /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQL,BC,Conn,ADV_SSMS /SAPWD=MyPasswordGoesHere /SECURITYMODE=SQL /TCPENABLED=1 /ADDCURRENTUSERASSQLADMIN /SQLSVCSTARTUPTYPE=Automatic /SQLSVCACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" /AGTSVCACCOUNT="NT
    AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS
However, the problem is that if a tech installs it for another user, that user does not have access, since ADDCURRENTUSERASSQLADMIN flag only adds the user who installed it -- rather than adding ALL users on the computer. (Or at least all admins.)
I tried replacing ADDCURRENTUSERASSQLADMIN with this:
    /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTIN\ADMINISTRATORS"
but that also failed to work. How can we install for all users, or at least all administrators?
NOTE: we do NOT know the name of the computer or the users. The installer has to work for any computer setup.
Similar question has already been asked, but wasn't helpful:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/8354675f-be9b-4909-b776-942f03954807/how-to-do-a-silent-install-of-sql-2010-express-for-all-users-on-a-computer?forum=sqlexpress
The documentation does not make it clear what you can pass as allowed SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS parameters. I also am not sure if I would need to change the AGTSVCACCOUNT or SQLSVCACCOUNT?

    I tried one more thing:
    /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTIN\Administrators"
which does not halt installation with an error.
    However, doing:
    osql -E
    create database test
    go
in a command prompt from a different admin user on the same machine results in a permissions error... but works if done from a command prompt on the user account from which MSSQLServer was installed.
So for some reason /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTIN\Administrators" does not work as expected.
    Anyone have any idea why?
I checked the output log from the install, and found it had generated and used a configurationFIle to do the install. I looked in that file, and these were the settings, even though I did NOT pass /ADDCURRENTUSERASSQLADMIN as a command line option:
; Windows account(s) to provision as SQL Server system administrators.
    SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS="BUILTIN\Administrators"
; The default is Windows Authentication. Use "SQL" for Mixed Mode Authentication.
    SECURITYMODE="SQL"
; Provision current user as a Database Engine system administrator for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.
    ADDCURRENTUSERASSQLADMIN="True"

  • Server 2012 R2 + MDT 2013 + WINLOAD.EXE error

    Hi All,
After watching some videos on MDT 2013 integration with SCCM 2012 I have been testing some builds of Windows Server 2012 R2. The MDT 2013 integration is working well with Database look-ups providing the required rules for customsettings.ini. To coincide
with the tests I am using the MDT 2013 Server Task Sequence Template.
Unfortunately I am hitting an error whereby, when using the MDT Task Sequence the full Operating System fails to start with a:
\Windows\System32\Winload.exe, 0xC000000F, File is Missing or Corrupt
Note: This is happening when the full OS is starting up. This is not a WinPE startup issue.
When I use a non-MDT Task Sequence, i.e. a typical task sequence we use for OSD the build process works OK. We still have MDT database integration working in that Task Sequence however.
    Some background info:
As per our normal process we are using a Windows Server 2012 R2 Capture image. The reference machine was build and capture using a partition scheme of (Partition 1 - 500MB + No Drive Letter + Hidden, Partition 2 - 100% of disk - Drive C:\)
This is a new SCCM 2012 R2 implementation and as such we installed CU3 as part of our build process. CU4 is yet to be applied.
Our WinPE Boot Images are WinPE 5 with a build number of 6.3.9600.16384
As we have an existing SCCM 2007 environment I am currently using USB Boot media to kick off the Task Sequence
We are only considering a "New Computer" build scenario. The MDT 2013 Task Sequence already detects that because the "_SMSTSinWinPE" = True.
In both Task sequences the Format and Partition step is as follows:
    Disk 0
    Standard(MBR)
BDEDrive (Primary) - 499MB, Marked Active with variable BDEDrive assigned
OSDisk (Primary) - 90GB variable OSDisk assigned
In both Task sequences the Apply Operating System step is as follows:
    Using Captured Image
Apply operating system from a captured image (Image 2-2)
Apply image to Logical Drive (OSDisk)
In both Task sequences the Apply Data Image step is as follows:
    Using Captured Image
Image 1-1 (from the same captured image as shown above)
Apply image to Logical Drive (BDEDrive)
What has been done so far:
Already eliminated driver packs as the problem occurs with and without them
Have monitored the build process (during WinPE that is) to determine what disks and partitions are in play at that stage. The 500MB BDE and 90GB OS Partitions are created as expected. The Apply OS and Apply Data Image steps are applying to the correct partitions.
I have used the Windows Server 2012 R2 Installation CD and tried to run a bootrec /fixmbr + bootrec /fixboot
I have used the Windows Server 2012 R2 Installation CD and tried to run a bootrec /rebuildbcd
I have tried toggling the "OSDPreserveDriveLetter" variable from True to False and back again. Based on my interpretation of the SCCM 2012 R2 + Windows Server 2012 drive letter issue this should be set to True so the capture image drive letters
    are preserved.
I have disabled an UEFI Partitioning steps just as a precaution.
There is no Bitlocker steps involved yet.
I have trawled through the SMSTS.LOG. So far it looks OK to me:

The fact that our normal Task Sequence works OK eliminates the Capture image and the WinPE boot images. It must be something I have not configured or configured incorrectly in the MDT task sequence.
    Any suggestions would be great.

    Hi,
If I were you, I would Streamline the MDT Task Sequence to find the root cause.

  • Terminal Server 2012 Standard Temp user logon

I have a 2012 r2 server with two virtual servers one is a 2012 standard PDC the other is a 2012 Standard terminal server both are non r2 editions. If I created a new or existing user they get logged on with a temp profile. I have already tried all the
googled fix/repair options, this is my last effort. I have tried the whole delete regedit profilelist and temp files. I have added the user to the local admin and domain admin for testing purposes. I have tried the hot fix kb
2896328. Any help or hint would be helpful.

    Hi Matt,
Does the same issue happen on both virtual machines?
Are there any related error messages in the Event Logs?
If there are any, please post them out so that we can better analyze the issue.
    Best Regards,
    Amy

  • Server 2012 R2 RDS, User Profile Disks are created but local profiles are created as well. The UPDs aren't mounting correctly.

2012 R2 RDS Deployment with RDCB HA and UPDs enabled. Everything was working fine with no issues until users started getting temporary profiles. Around the same time UPDs were being created but at the same time a user profile was created in C:\Users.
I actually rebuilt the entire RDS configuration except the SQL Server. It took about 5 hours and was not that big a deal but.... we still have the same issue!
Does anybody have the solution for this?

    Hi,
In most cases, the issue is caused by locked UPD. And the workaround is to log off the user. Please check if it is the case.
    For example:
RDS user profile disks - getting error temporary profile are being used as UPD are not accessible
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/0d4b66fc-b53f-435e-b036-142b6ed15d0b/rds-user-profile-disks-getting-error-temporary-profile-are-being-used-as-upd-are-not-accesible?forum=winserverTS
Also, please check if you will get the temporary profile when logging on with a local account of the session host server.
If issue persists, please check if there is any related error in Event Viewer and provide us for further research.
    Hope this helps.

  • SCCM 2012 Clear all user device affinity

Over a year ago UDA was set by mistake to manual affinity confirmations
    Since that time
several thousands of requests was received at admin console.
Couple of weeks ago UDA was set to automatic affinity based on usage statistics. Unfortunately only new OS deployments get UDA based on usage and 98% of other PCs still have no affinity.
    It was decided to
clear the queue of current device affinity requests at admin console on "All systems" collection by rejecting them due to I do not want to set admin affinity record in UDA - it is permanent IMO.
It did not help to get new UDA for old PCs
because clients believing that they already set it before. (see log file)
    User 'XXXXX\XXXXX' has 25960 usage minutes UserAffinity 07.07.2014 16:11:21 2112 (0x0840)
    Setting auto affinity for user 'XXXXX\XXXXX'. UserAffinity 07.07.2014 16:11:21 2112 (0x0840)
Found same state message existing. (was sent before) Skip sending same state message for user 'XXXXX\XXXXX'.. UserAffinity 07.07.2014 16:11:21 2112 (0x0840)
It is definitely a client WMI issue, because reinstalling client with uninstallation checkbox  fix the problem on second computer policy retrieval cycle.
I need a way to clear somehow old affinity states in client history to set it again based on usage statistics. Any advice?

    Hi,
Have you tried to delete the state message from WMI? I saw that is stored in root\ccm\statemsg -> Enum Classes -> Recursive -> double-click CCM_StateMsg -> Instances. There should be messages that contain "domain/user_Auto".

  • WinX missing for domain users (Windows Server 2012/R2, Windows 8/8.1)

    Hi,
I recently created a discussion about a Winx (Right Click) issue that I have in my environment. For windows servers 2012/2012 R2 and windows 8/8.1, I don't have the right click menu.
I don't use roaming profiles. The workaround is to manually copy the Winx folder for each user who log on but I would like to understand why it doesn't work.
Here is the previous discussion I created.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4e80c369-242f-47ba-bd22-aafb9b0a6072/winx-missing-for-domain-users?forum=winserverManagement#ab6deeb2-cbcd-4147-a871-4c76d4cb37af
    I really appreciate your help.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I could not reproduce the issue.
When i log in the Windows Server 2012 with domain user, the WinX folder already exists ans the Right Click is ok.
So you could create a new domain user to check the result.
    Regards.

  • Windows Store apps on Windows Server 2012 with XenApp?

We've got asked by a vendor whether our app will be able to support multiple simultaneous users, when installed on Windows Server 2012 and accessed via XenApp.
I suppose the real question here is whether or not Windows Store apps can be run in XenApp over Windows Server 2012 at all, and if so whether there are any special requirements on the apps to support multiple simultaneous instances execution.
The app itself takes each user through a log in procedure, during which all the dynamic user-specific data is retrieved from the back-end server; no such data is stored by the app locally.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Alex

    Hi,
To better help you, the Citrix support could be more helpful on your questions:
    http://support.citrix.com/search?searchQuery=*&lang=en&sort=date_desc&prod=XenApp&pver=
The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us.  Thank you for your understanding.
As I known, we always use Remoteapp feature to share app, but it is only worked for desktop app:

About citrix product, I knew little about it.

  • Server 2012 can't install 14 updates... Since January!!!

I did a fresh install of Windows Server 2012 on a Intel 64 bit computer... a real one, not virtual.   I've done a reinstall from formatted disk three times so far.  In January I posted a message where I couldn't install two updates.
Now the number has climbed to 14!   It takes over an hour to boot because each update tries to install, fails, reverts all its files and then the next update starts and does the same thing.
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows Server 2012 (KB2817183)

All fail with Error details: Code 800F0922
I've ran everything I could find in this forum.  I cleared the c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution directory and ran the Windows update.  Same updates came down and failed installation.  So I cleared the c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution directory
once again and ran the DISM commands (dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth and
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth) as administrator.  The first reported no errors and the second command said the system was repaired.  I ran Windows update again and the same updates were selected and failed installation.
I've tried the dcomcnfg thing, setting the default authentication and impersonation levels and ran the 'windowsupdate.diagcab'(http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/C/9/6C970550-32AB-4235-9CDD-7FC9DD848BBB/windowsupdate.diagcab
    a ton of times.
Server 2012... I'm at a loss for words.  Does anyone at Microsoft know what is going on here?
