Apple Mail stopped today; server suddenly redirects through Yahoo

At about noon today my AppleMail stopped loading. Somehow the incoming server address got changed to redirect through Yahoo (I've never had a Yahoo acct), and the box is greyed-out so I can't change it. Frustrated. This has happened with three email addresses I use. Until a couple of hours ago the outgoing server was fine but now that won't even work. The computer has slowed down and is nearly unresponsive.

Thanks much.
I get a dialogue box that says Internet Account Preferences can't connect to the account. It asks for the password. When I type it in, I get a message Unable to Verify Account Name or Password. This happened on all three email addresses.  There was no "Advanced" option to select. (I'm able to access all of my mail through Verizon's website; it's just Apple Mail that is the problem. It is very slow in responding in any direction: click on a folder and it takes many seconds to open; try to open a new blank message, it takes several seconds and then the curser sticks or doesn't work). All other applications are working okay but considerably slower than earlier today.
I made an appointment at the Genius Bar for tomorrow. Maybe this has something to do with Yosemite, but I downloaded that several days ago and it's been working well.

  • Apple Mail stops downloading emails at a certain point

    Hello,
I have just recently started to use Apple Mail (3.6) and set up two accounts: one POP for hotmail and one IMAP for gmail. While sending mails works fine with both accounts, the hotmail one stops downloading mails from the server at a certain point.
From the approximately 15000 mails on the server, Mail downloads about 3000 (the oldest ones, which I neither need nor want on my computer anyway) and then stops. When I click on receive new mails, it will show the connecting sign as usual. The bar on the left, which indicates how many e-mails remain on the server and how many are currently being downloaded, pops up for a second, telling me that all remaining 12000 e-mails have been downloaded in the same time span - which obviously didn't happen.
I have already tried deleting downloaded mails from my computer, thinking that there might be a limit to the number of mails saved on the desktop. Also I deleted the whole account and set it up again, but the same thing happened at exactly the same point, respectively the same email downloaded. What to do?
Thanks to everyone who can help me out with this!

Yes, these were the e-mails that showed up in the inbox, i.e. they were the chunk of mails that I could download before Apple Mail stopped the downloading at all. I deleted them because I thought it would make space for newer ones to be downloaded.
No, I have not used any other Mail application before. I used to go directly to the hotmail-webpage.
Interestingly, I have deleted the whole account again and set it up anew - which enabled Apple Mail to another round of downloading mails when I did it the last time. This time however, nothing happened: again, the bar on the left appears for a second, telling me that around 12000 mails are on my server and that all have been downloaded in about this second. But they do not show up. It remains a mistery to me, even more so as Mail is obviously able to detect all mails on the server (when I check under Account Information, Emails on Server) but not to download them.

Once updated, you will be able to continue to access your accounts through an external mail client (MS Outlook, etc.). • Apple Mail stopped connecting to gmail

    Macbook Pro - OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks - Mail Version 7.3 (1878.6)
I swear, i did nothing. It stopped collecting mail (imap), but i did not notice until i got connection errors trying to send a message (SMTP).
Here is the smtp error message:
The server “smtp.gmail.com” cannot be contacted on the default ports. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
I tried deleting the account from the preferences and recreating it. Same problem. Since it is all automatically configured i did not try different ports. I wouldn't know which to try.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
Oddly, failure to connect when collecting messages is not throwing up an error. Here is the Connection Doctor details:

  • IPhone apple mail stopped. blank screen ideas?

I use Apple Mail on my iPhone, collecting mail from other accounts.
I have a blocked screen - simply blank and I can't move anywhere.
I've tried removing what I believe was the offending account but that had no effect.
Apart from going back to factory settings has anyone any idea what I might do?

Went to cPanel and changed the password. Changed Apple mail password setting and all works fine.
So how / why can a valid working password suddenly become invalid and not working? Literally receiving and sending emails one minute and the next it stops working. mystery.

  • Apple Mail stopped syncing w/ iCloud on Mac

Without any updates or account changes I stopped being able to send mail via Apple Mail nor is it being pushed to my Mac. Iphone and going online via browser I see mail is on the server. I tried to send an image and the "outbox" never sent, instead showed a spinning gear. I removed the attached mail and tried to send a text only email and it failed as well.I migrated a month ago from MobileMe to the cloud. It worked until yesterday. I tried to send mail and it spun in perpetuity.
I can use gmail to send and receive but it's not my main mail system.  There are no warnings, no request for password and all connections are green via the connection doctor. I took the icloud mail account offline and put it back online. I have reviewed all the settings via Apple docs. All kosher except I see instead of imap.mail.me.com my incoming mail server reads p99-imap.mail.me.com. I have force quit Mail although it doesn't show it as nonresponsive. I have restarted the computer several times. Nothing would stop the gears from spinning next to the inbox and the outgoing mail box.
This went on for over 24hrs. I logged into my icloud online and have unread messages. I heard logging into the online account might help but it didn't and why would I need to be logged in a browser in order for the Mac connection to work?
What else can I check? Preferences to delete? Settings to reset? Thanks.

    Hello,
I've seen this post and several other posts on these forums with the same problem I was having.
I made this quick video showing you how I got the iCloud email server back to working function.

  • Apple Mail Connected to Server, Inbox not populating

So, I am having trouble with Apple Mail. I have three accounts linked to it, two of which work just fine. The third, a Network Solutions account used for work, will not work right. All the info entered is correct (ports and such), and in the connection doctor, the incoming and outgoing servers are green lighted as working correctly. I can send mail from the account in Apple Mail (test emails work fine). I also have the work email connected on my phone (Evo 4g) and my iPad with no issues. If you control click on the work account and go to account info, the tab for messages on server shows all the work emails that shoudl be populating my inbox, but the emails are not showing up in the inbox.
I took the laptop to the genius bar, and they could not figure out what was wrong. ANyone have any thoughts??

It works on my phone and my iPad, and used to work on my old work laptop (PC running Outlook). Work laptop died, and am using personal laptop while awaiting a new one (the MacBook Pro) so this is the first time setting up work mail on the mac laptop. The guy at the genius bar was confused that it works just fine on iPad but not the laptop, as the app and OSX program are essentially the same thing internally.
I just don't understand how Apple Mail can be fully connected to the server, and I can see the messages on the server through Aplpe Mail, but the messages won't actually populate in the inbox. What the heck??

  • Apple Mail (Tiger) Header Labels Suddenly Go Berserk

Suddenly my Apple Mail labels (eg., "Subject) no longer show properly. I suspect it's a Mail font problem. But it's been working fine up to now, and I didn't do anything untoward to affect the fonts. It appears to have occurred after downloading a particular message. Of course, if I paste the supposedly problematic Labels into another application they look fine. Hmmm. Anybody have a cause and a fix?
    Powerbook 17-133MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You've probably either disabled or removed a font that Mail needs to work properly (e.g. Helvetica):

  • Safari stopped working, Apple Mail stopped working...where'd they go?

I don't know what happened...I tried to open Safari, the icon bounced a few times on the dock, then nothing. Same exact thing happens with Apple Mail. All sorts of weird things have been happening since .mac mail became Mobilme. Don't know if it's related but I've had nothing but frustration since then. Computer is very slow, internet crawls.
I'm now using Firefox but it is really slow, too. In the past few days I haven't been able to close the tabs--I've tried manually closing them, closing Firefox, quitting Firefox, even shutting down the computer, waiting overnight and restarting. The Firefox window opens and all of the tabs are still open!
I used to feel like everything always worked on Macs, but in the past year or so--and especially since mobilme--nothing seems to work very well. Mobilme is a disaster!
Any ideas on what happened to my Safari and Apple Mail apps? And how to get rid of the tabs on Firefox?
    Thanks!

Hi there, Barry & Gretchen --
Barry, I think Gretchen has only one problem --
her internet connection. That affects everything else that doesn't work well.
I would tend to concentrate on finding that culprit before doing and A&I,
but that's just my two cents.
    Gretchen,
    1. Who is your ISP?
    2. Have you contacted them about the slowdown?
    3. How old are your modem and router? Perhaps they need a firmware update?
    4. Has Gretchen run the "internet diagnostics" on her Mac yet???
    5. Is it affecting both your Macs?

  • TS4002 iCloud not working in Apple Mail - cannot change server settings as they are greyed

I have been having some issues with Apple Mail for a while - constantly being asked for passwords, etc. Then some days my iCloud mail will not work at all. It then magically comes back to life after a day offline. This has been happening regularly since the move from Mobile Me to iCloud.
I have read a few threads about Keychain, etc, but so far nothing I have tried has worked.
    Any suggestions?

    Luke:
Sorry that I cannot give you an answer.  I am having the same problem.  I have the correct exchange settings.  I even turn off autodiscovery and set the external and internal servers to the same settings.  Mail partially works, but it will "forget" older email items when they are still in an inbox.  This is NOT an issue with iOS, so I think there is a bug in the Mail program.  I am still searching for an answer as well.  Right now I am resorting to exchange webmail on my mac.  This seems to be only a mail problem.  My calendar and tasks sync fine.

  • Apple Mail and Exchange Server

I have Apple mail with many accounts included two Exchange accounts. As soon as my MacBook Pro with ML goes into screensaver the exchange servers disconnects and the list of emails dissapear in the inbox. I need to restart Apple mail and then they are back. I need to to restart Apple mail several times daily. Any ideas or workaround?

  • Apple mail stopped connecting to imap servers identified by name

I'm running mail (Version 7.3 (1878.2)). For some reason that I cannot fathom, imap accounts stopped working on June 10 or so.
I can fix this by setting the imap server to the ip address of the server, rather than its name.
I can confirm that the name is properly resolved to the address in terminal.
I'm using my own imap cyrus imap server
    Is this a common behaviour?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
