Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter to connect Win7 tower to iMac / Target Display Mode
I currently run Windows on bootcamp on the iMac (Mid-2011), although the tasks I perform (3D modelling, rendering and such) cause the Mac to get very hot, and as a result hae a slight burn mark on the LED LCD screen.
I am buying a Windows machine, and am to uninstall bootcamp and use the Mac purely for OSX, but use the iMac screen as a monitor for the tower using Target Display Mode. My issue is - the Windows 7 tower only has DVI output. And as I understand, the Mid-2011 iMac only supports Target Display Mode via a thunderbolt cable.
My question is - Will the Apple Mini DVI to DVI adapter allow me to connect the DVI-only tower to the iMac? Thanks in advance x
Oh, I should mention also that the iMac is the 27" model. Mid-2011 3.4Ghz Intel Core i7 with 4GB RAM and 1TB Harddrive. And ATI HD5450 1GB Graphics.

I have connected my early 2014 MacBook to a late 2012 imac and connected them via Thunderbolt cable. Pressing Command F2 causes the screen on teh iMac to change to teh MacBook background screen, but does not display any desktop files or command lines. Any ideas how to fix this?
Hi tdmone,
Welcome to the Support Communities! The resource below may help you with the Target Display Mode options for connecting your Macbook and iMac:

The table below shows iMac computers that support TDM, the required cables, and the port of the computer to which you are connecting the iMac.

Cable Supported
Port on Source Computer
iMac (27-inch Late 2009)
Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort
Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt
iMac (27-inch Mid 2010)
Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort
Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt
iMac (Mid 2011)
Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt

iMac (Mid 2012 and later)
Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt
Thunderbolt
Are you connecting via the Thunderbolt ports on both computers?
How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.
Can I use a third-party keyboard or older Apple keyboard to enable TDM?
Some older Apple keyboards and keyboards not made by Apple may not allow Command-F2 to toggle display modes. You should use an aluminum wired or wireless Apple keyboard to toggle TDM on and off.
I hope this information helps ....

Target Display Mode - Thunderbolt to Mini DisplayPort?
I have a MacBook Pro which has a Mini DisplayPort and I connect this to the Mini DisplayPort on my 27" iMac and use Target Display Mode.
I am interested in the MacBook Air but there is no longer a Mini DisplayPort and I want to be able to go into Target Display Mode on my iMac. Is this going to be possible ie can I connect the Thunderbolt port on a MacBook Air to the Mini DisplayPort on my iMac and go into Target Display Mode? If possible, are the cables available yet?
Thanks
TonyYes, you can use the Thunderbolt port (which doubles as a Mini DisplayPort).
And yes, the cable (Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort) is available.
You can probably use your existing cable for Target Display Mode, just not for connecting Thunderbolt devices to your MacBook Air. -
27: iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter quits working post-firmware
I iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter suddenly quit working after I installed Apple's latest iMac display firmware update. This is an Intel Core i5; the monitor is an LG Flatron 24" Wide, and when it powers up it says "no video input" and goes into power-saving mode. No amount of replugging cables helps, but the monitor works fine on other computers.
The Displays control panel just shows one monitor, and clicking Detect Displays does nothing.
I suspect Apple's Display Firmware Update. My installer log shows the following, but the problem only happened today after the latest update:
6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.0
6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0
6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
6/5/10 7:29 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
I have automatic updates disabled, but after each update I would see more firmware updates ready, but caution leads me to never install more than one of these at a time, and then to wait a while to see if anything bad happens. The odd thing is that the Display Update 1.0 seems to have been installed three times in this course of events. Alas, there appears to be no way to uninstall a firmware update.
Here is the System Profiler Graphics/Displays output:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x944a
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-B9110C-425
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.383
Displays:
iMac:
Resolution: 2560 x 1440
Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Built-In: Yes
Connection Type: DisplayPort
Display Connector:
Status: No Display Connected
It says the Mac sees no display connected, and the display gets no video signal. Since the adapter is an active device (it has powered electronics to convert DisplayPort signals to DVI signals) I suppose it could have just coincidentally died. But that seems unlikely given that the thing worked perfectly just before the last firmware update.
Does anybody have similar experience, or better yet, a fix?Unfortunately the Apple Knowledge Base does not give much information about this update. Such has how to tell if it has been successfully installed. I suspect that because it keeps recurring in the install log that it has not been installed successfully as yet. Are you receiving this update through Software Update? Can you locate the installer for this update? It maybe located in Apps/Utilities.
Some firmware update installations can be interrupted/corrupted by attached devices. If you find the update's installer on your iMac, I suggest that you detach all external devices from the iMac, use an Apple USB keyboard & mouse if available, follow the instructions carefully and install the update manually. If you do not locate the installer I suggest downloading manually from the link below and installing it.
The Knowledge Base article mentions that your iMac should also have a Graphics Firmware Update. I suggest that you download and install that as well.

I cracked my screen. I want to use other monitor which I had one. I bought an Apple Mini-DP to VGA adapter. It worked. It means I can see ADDITIONAL screen. However I want to use this monitor for the main screen. How can I do?? Please help.
You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the monitor. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the monitor and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the monitor your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.

Target Display Mode - Connecting pre-Thunderbolt Macbook Air to Thunderbolt iMac.
I want to use Target Display Mode in order to display my late-2010 Macbook Air (pre-Thunderbolt) to a Thunderbolt-based iMac. Is there an adapter solution to connect, say, a mini display port + USB port on the MB Air to the iMac Thunderbolt port, such that TDM would work?
Depends upon the situation. Take a look at this blog:

Target Display Mode iMac 27 mid 2011 with Mac Mini 2011 bootcamp
Hello,
I can't seem to use Target Display Mode with Bootcamp.
My configuration:
Imac 27" mid 2011 with osx 10.8.4
Mac Mini Server 2011 with osx 10.8.4, bootcamp 5 and Windows7
Both are connected via Apple genuine Thunderbolt cable (2m).
When I boot the Mac Mini into OSX then Target Display Mode works perfectly and I can see the osx installed on the Mac Mini on the iMac display.
However, when I reboot the Mac Mini into Bootcamp (windows7 x64) I can't put the iMac in Targt Display Mode and get to see Windows 7 on my iMac screen.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924#8
The following article says that this should work, however once I reboot osx on the Mac Mini the iMac leaves Target Display Mode immediatly and will not return to Target Display Mode.
Any advice? I contacted Apple Support and a Sr. Enginner said it should be supported and he's checking with a higher tier.
ThanksYes, it does.

Target Display Mode And Ethernet Connection.
Can I use my iMac as a display for a Mac Mini using Target Display Mode while using the iMac as a slave for the Mac Mini via ethernet?
OK.
I have a 2011 iMac which I use as my DAW. First I want to transfere the entire hard drive contents over to a Mac Mini(fusion drive) using Apple Migration Assistant.
Next I'll trash most everything on the iMac except for my DAW plugin libraries and then install and set up Vinenna Pro 5.
Next I'll connect my iMac to the Mac Mini with a TB cable in Target Dispaly Mode.
Then I'll connect the iMac and Mac Mini using the ethernet ports to access Vienna Pro 5 with my DAW(host) software.
Apple states that the USB and FW ports won't function on the iMac while in Target Display Mode but does not mention ethernet so I'm asuming that it will.

Hi I am trying to connect my mba mid 2011 with an imac 27" 2011 with target display mode tdm. When I am using a thunderbolt cable nothing will work. When I use a minidisplay cable, both screens turn blue but eventually nothing happens. What is the problem
Your answer is likely in Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support If you are familiar with this document, please re-read it and I suspect you may find something you either missed or are doing incorrectly.

Display port connect to pc using imac as display.
hi guys i recently got the imac 27inch. i would like to know if i connect the display port from my pc to the imac, should i on the power for my imac too ?
as i was told that imac can use as a external monitor as long and connected to a display port form macbook or pc ?
Please help me thank you.Hi Bryan,
have a look at these informations about the 'Target Display Mode' http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
Be aware that to my knowledge there are still problems when using an ATI 5xxx graphics card in your PC as these still seem to be incompatible for the Target Display Mode.
Regards

According to the TDM support page, this isn't possible. I tried it with a Mnidisplay port to minidisplay port cable without success. Its a shame that thunderbolt doesn't appear to be backwards compable as I could have achieved this with an older iMac.
CheersYou are correct....it will not work. Please carefully read Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter doesn't fit my aluminum iMac
I previously had a 17" white iMac (pre-Intel) machine, and about 6 months ago I bought the mini-DVI to video adapter so I could connect it to my television. Worked like a charm. But I recently bought a new aluminum iMac, and the adaptor doesn't fit into the mini-DVI port in the back of the machine. It appears the adaptor and port are both male ends.
Has the port changed on the aluminum iMacs? The product description for the adaptor on Apple's website says it works with iMac (Intel Core Duo). Isn't the aluminum iMac an Intel Core Duo? I can't figure out why it doesn't fit and which cable I'm supposed to be using instead.
Any advice would be appreciated!Hi Paul
Yes the Intel iMac [Spec's|http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacMid2007.html] call for the (M9319G/A) Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter!

The iBook, eMac, or iMac G5 use the Mini-VGA to Video adapter.

This monitor works, on a PC. Could the connector be bad or the port on the Mac Air? Any ideas?

Or if you want to use the MacBook’s keyboard and trackpad to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
If you can’t see your MacBook screen because it’s broken or the backlight is off use the F7 key to switch between Extended Desktop and Mirror Display.
(From the MacBook User Guide: F7 (video mode toggle key) Switch between dual-display mode (extending the desktop across the built-in display and an external display) and video-mirroring mode (presenting the same information on both displays).
