Apple's 500GB Wireless Time Capsule external drive.....PC?

If I buy the Wireless Time Capsule drive from Apple, will it back up my husband's PC just as it will my Mac? I read both, when looking at the information about it at the apple site.

The Time Capsule disk can be mounted as a network drive on a PC - no problem.
Macs can be backed up by Time Machine to the Time Capsule.
Time Machine is not available on the PC.
There are PC backup software packages that do support network attached storage and should work.

  • Time Machine does not see a Time Capsule external drive

Time Machine will not recognize an external drive attached to my Time Capsule, even though it did so last week. How do I get it working again?
Until last week, I was using Time Machine to back up to a Verbatim 2 TB drive attached to a Time Capsule. It occasionally hung, requiring me to restart the Time Capsule in order to get backups working again, so I bought a Seagate 2 TB drive to replace the Verbatim in case the problem was a flaky drive. Now I can't get Time Machine to recognize either disk when the disk is attached to the Time Capsule.
Both disks are formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Both disks work correctly when I attach them directly to my Mac. When I attach either disk to the Time Capsule, Airport Utility shows the external drive, shows that sharing is enabled, and I can even mount the Time Capsule with Finder and see the external disk with Finder. But when I try to Select Disk in Time Machine Preferences, whether or not the Time Capsule is mounted with Finder, Time Machine Preferences doesn't see the disk—the only choices of disk are My User Account on the Time Capsule, and Other Time Capsule.
Restarting my Mac and restarting the Time Capsule does not help. Software and firmware updates are (and have been) up to date. I'm running OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 and Time Capsule version 7.6.4.
To reiterate, this was working a week ago. How do I get it working again?

If nothing in your configuration has changed, you can try plugging the disks one at a time directly into your mac, run Disk Utility and perform a Repair Disk. If any errors are displayed, rerun Repair Disk until there are none. Then try them back on the Time Capsule.

  • Time capsule & external drive - Time Machine Back-up of two macbooks - Can't connect

My wife and I each have a macbook pro and want to back them up using Time Machine.  I had my macbook and a time capsule for a while before she got her laptop, so I backed mine up to the Time capsule - no problems.
Now, I have purchased an external drive so that mine backs up onto the time capsule drive and hers is set to back up on the external drive due to space limitations.
However, with hers set up, my macbook can no longer see its original back-up file.  Meaning that hers will back-up all the time, but mine can't ever connect.
Is there a different configuration / setting that I should try to make this work?
    Help is greatly appreciated!

I don't follow how the change on one laptop can affect the other, unless they are networked together in some way.. how is the second laptop connected??
I suggest you reset Time Machine.. and rediscover the TC..
    A4 here http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If you upgraded to Lion or ML recently that is the issue.. reboot the TC and maybe the whole network to clear the old IP addresses.

  • Time Capsule external drive very slow for backup

I am experiencing very, very slow backup times using an external drive attached to my Time Capsule. When I recently added a 3 TB Rocstor external drive to my mid-2011 iMac using FireWire, I included it in the drives to be backed up. The internal 2 TB of storage in my Time Capsule was no longer enough, so I plugged a 4 TB WD My Book Studio drive into the Time Capsule's USB 2.0 port and specified this WD drive as the only backup storage. The first backup took almost 48 hours. Now the Time Machine keeps trying to back up about 400 GB - 500 GB (though there haven't been any changes) and is transferring about 400 KB/sec over Ethernet from my iMac to the Time Capsule's external drive. What am I doing wrong? (I recently upgraded the iMac to OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite.)

Frankly, I have no way to gauge your network setup, so I can't really tell you what you should expect. I can tell you from my own experiences using a local network based on a 3rd Gen. Gigabit Ethernet AEBS that using Ethernet the average throughput (not interface) was in the neighborhood of 16-20 MBs/sec. The average throughput for a USB 2.0 drive connected directly was about the same.
This works out to an average throughput of around 60 GBs/hour. Depending upon file sizes and number of files being transferred a USB 2.0 drive might reach 100 GBs/hour, but that is a rare outcome. The USB 2.0 drive interface speed is about the same as FireWire 400 - 400 Mb/s or roughly 50 MBs/sec. This is what I know from measurement. Do not expect Ethernet to be any faster for throughput.

  • HT5022 How to share my photos from time capsule external drive over the internet.

I saw some article that, i can share my photos from time capsule drive over the internet. Also, heard it can be done through manual configuration of time capsule. Firstly, i do not see such option in my time capsule configuration. I did a factory reset assuming, i might have configured through auto mode for the first time (that could be the reason why i don't see manual option). Now, i don't know, how can i share my images over the internet frome time capsule drive, without using my mac book system up and running all the time.. I wanted to create a secured user id/password to let the other users to access my network share drive. Is that possible?

Please check out the following AirPort User Tip on how your Time Capsule can be accessed from the Internet to get you started.

  • Time capsule hard drive working slowly on mavericks

I would like to know why time capsule external drive works so slow after Maverick update   ? Cause now if you want to open folder in time capsule external drive it takes a while till it opens ? After it opens you you cant see any files for a while to just after some time it appears.

Thanks LaPastenague, but interestingly, the issue turned out to be rather esoteric.
We have a headless Mac running as a home theater pc. Apparently, it tried to do an hourly TM backup just as Carbon Copy Cloner (which runs a completely seperate backup) put the computer to sleep after it completed its backup.
So when the home theater Mac woke up, for some reason it kept having trouble attaching to the Time Capsule disk to do a TM backup...
...which is what was making my TC hard drive spin up and down and up and down and up...
As soon as I fixed the error and the home theater Mac made a successful TM backup, all was well once again.
(And I've since installed TimeMachineEditor, so these types of backup collisions won't happen anymore.)
Hope this helps someone else down the line...
    Thanks!

  • How to setup wireless time capsule with 3rd party external HDD and router?

    Topic says it all really...
I've got a linksys router and an iomega external hard drive.
I want to have wireless time capsule setup but i don't really wanna shell out for an apple time capsule when I have a perfectly working router and hard drive...
Can it be done? would I be better off buying an airport express/extreme?
    cheers

    Welcome, jackbyo!
    I've got a linksys router
    Good product
    iomega external hard drive.
    1) The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with Time Machine.
    2) The drive will need to be connected directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire connection.
    Can it be done?
    As above
would I be better off buying an airport express/extreme
The AirPort Express will not support a hard drive.
Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple due to corruption issues.

  • Time capsule external hard drive backup

I want to back up & save all of my pics, movies, music to the time capsule hard drive so that iTunes can use them from the Time Capsule hard drive & I don't have to keep all that stored on my MacBook.  Can someone help explain how to do that?

Looks like you just need to move your iTunes Media folder to Time Capsule's hard drive and then let iTunes know of the new location.

  • Transferring data from one Time Capsule's drive to another?

Hi, was wondering if anyone had any input on this.
A coworker has one of the older model 500GB Time Capsule units and just purchased one of the new dual bandwidth 500GB units.
We are simply trying to move the data on the old drive to an area where it can be copied onto the new time capsule.
When plugging in the old unit, we're getting a blinking amber light and the Airport Utility is not recognizing the old unit.
I think there might be a conflict as we already have an active AirPort in the office so I'm going to wait until later to attempt it again.
My question is, can I somehow wire the time capsule via USB to our existing Airport where it could recognize the time capsule as a shared external hard drive? Any other connection options to make the time capsule's drive visible so we can at least get the data off of it?

    Steve,
    Welcome to the Apple discussions!
Have you tried connecting both of them together via ethernet? They should both show up in the SideBar of a finder window. Naturally they will need to be named differently to distinguish them from each other. What are you trying to transfer? Time machine backups? Or other files?
With them attached to each other, have you tried using the "Archive" feature of Airport Utility? That will clone the contents of one to the other.
Otherwise, your best option, and fastest, might be to use an external HD between the two TCs.
Attache a HD to the first TCs USB port.
Then use Airport Utility to "Archive" the data to the HD.
Once that's complete, move the HD to the USB port of the other TC.
At this point I'm unclear because I've never done it before, but copy over the data from the HD to the TC. I don't suppose Disk Utilities "Restore" feature would work at this point as the TCs HD would show up in the source pane.
Maybe this will give you some ideas though,
    Cheers!

  • Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive  with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule  ( used wireless with Airport)  has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) .  TC  says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new  incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good.  Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) .  I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little  to free up some  10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine  was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error.  My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ?  which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

  • Playing media files from Time Capsule hard drive

    Hello folks,
I am using my 3TB Time Capsule to host all of my video files, most of which are MKV files. I also have an external hard drive connected to the USB port on Time Capsule and there are few video files on it as well.
I am using Time Capsule as a router sitting between the cable modem (WAN) and my locan network (LAN). I have an Argosy HV355T digital media player hooked up to my home theater and TV via HDMI. It is connected to Time Capsule via Ethernet.
On Argosy media player, I am able to connect to Time Capsule (login is successful) but I can neither see the hard drives nor their contents.
When I connect the external hard drive to the USB port on Argosy, the hard drive is recognized and files from it can be read and played. Thus I have ruled out the possibility of Argosy being unable to read Mac formats.
I try to use uPnP on Argosy to connect as uPnP client to Time Capsule, but nothing happens. I thought uPnP is turned ON by default on Time Capsule.
Why am I not able to see the Time Capsule hard drive from my media player?
What am I missing in my setup?
Do I need to install a media server device to read files from hard drives and storage, and stream to media player (Argosy)?
How are you folks using Time Capsule to play video from its hard drive on to TV?
    Thanks.

The TC has no upnp.. no Apple device does.. Apple refused to join and went off in a huff, sat in the corner and created their own.. NAT-PMP.. which as you can imagine.. doesn't work with anything else but Apple stuff.
So first issue.. no upnp but that isn't a biggie.
SMB file protocol which the rest of the world uses.. has rules which Apple also breaks.
Make sure your TC is setup with all short names. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
On the file sharing page of the airport utility.. (you may need to use 5.6 from Mac or Windows), ensure that you set a workgroup.. generally now WORKGROUP. And make sure you turn on the guest account to full read and write permissions.
It would be good to ensure a normal windows computer can access the TC..
In windows explorer type in the address bar
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (where you replace with actual name or IP).
I do not know the Argosy player but I will look it up.
My hacked ATV1 can see and play files from the TC. That is running XMBC of course.

  • How stream music from Time-Capsules hard drive via iPhone and AirPlay without any computer turned on?

Is there a possibility to stream music stored on my time-capsules hard drive directly to my iPhone and then ask the iPhone the send the music (in real-time) via AirPlay to my AirPlay compatible speakers, without having ANY computer turned on? I know that the Sonos system managed this simple task, but Apple? Any news in iOS 4.3 or 5 maybe.

As Chris says... but if the media is on an external drive as above then you also need to make sure the external drive has the same drive letter on the system you are moving to or iTunes won't be able to find the files.

  • Connecting wirelessly time capsule

I would like to extend the wireless coverage in my house, is the following possible:
Connect the airport extreme base station to my main router via ethernet.
Create a wireless network from the Airport extreme.
Get the time capsule to wirelessly join that network.
I have set the time capsule to back up to an external drive attached to my imac via USB, will this still back up at USB speeds (if the time capsule is wireless but the external drive in connected via USB).
    Thanks,

What you propose should work but the backup speed over wireless is at best 1/3 that of Gigabit Ethernet which is not any faster than a USB drive.

  • How do I restore the entire system from a Time Machine external drive?

    Hello everyone,
Up front - I have searched through numerous threads but have not yet been able to solve my problem - even though it is presumably easy for many.
So... I had to bring in my late 2009 27" iMac to Apple to replace the hard drive - mine was one of the thousands affected by the defective Seagate 1 TB disk recall. I was told that the disk would be cloned, but nevertheless I made a full system backup with Time Machine to a dedicated external hard drive.
A week later and I now have my iMac back - but when I boot, I only see a white screen with a pointer, so it appears that the drive was not cloned - but that I now have a blank 1 TB disk, correct?
I have also tried booting with the external drive attached, thinking that the dedicated Time Machine external drive would allow me to boot directly from it and restore the system if need be - I booted with CMD+R, tried again with ALT ... no luck.
And I cannot find my Mac OS DVDs...
So... is the drive blank, or am I missing something here?
If so, how can I boot from the external Time Machine drive, or is that not possible either?
Any pointers greatly appreciated, thanks very much in advance.

Call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    1. Insert the Mac OS X DVD and press C key while your computer is starting.
    2. Go to Utilities menu and restore the backup.
You should have made a clone instead of the backup because Apple gives the hard disk without OS X
