Apple's latest noisy powerbook drives me crazy

I posted this on silentpcreview.com, and re-post here to share you with my experience with the latest apple product.
I just returned the latest verison of powerbook 12" to apple. Because it's so noisy.
I choose apple's laptop because many people in this forum said apple's laptop is very quiet. But that is not ture, at least for the latest laptop from apple (made since Nov. 2005)
The laptop has a G4 cpu running at 1.5Ghz, 80G Toshiba HD at 5400rpm, and a 64MB 3D card from Nvidia.
When I first turn on the powerbook G4 I notice the noise comes from the left part of the laptop. It seems the cooling fan is running all the time at low rpm. Together with the working noise from HD, it's impossible not to be disturbed in a quiet room working in front of the laptop.
I phoned apple saying the fan is always on, which is obviously uncommon. This book also has some problem reading os x dvd disc. They then arrange a replacement for me.
When I got the replacement (which is also brand new), I think this one should be quiet, but again I'm wrong. The background noise is the same as the first one I got. After consulting apple's user discussion forum, I found such noise is considered normal for a powerbook G4.
The book also runs hot very quickly. I already runs it at reduced speed (1Ghz), and lift the case with a notebook stand. The temp. of the cpu quickly jumps to 45C in 30 minutes even I'm just composing an email. Then the *real fan* turns on, with very loud noise for 1 minutes, only to drive down temp. by 3C. Then after 5 or 10 minutes, the temp. goes up to 45C again and the fan kicks in again. This happens even I'm just listening music through itunes which typically has a cpu usage of 15-20%.
The really bad thing happens when I watch a movie encoded in h.264 using quicktime7, a format apple said providing "stunning quality". Unfortunately, enjoying the "stunning quality" means the cpu will work at 70-80% (at reduced clock rate of 1G), and the cooling fan will run crazily all the time! A good movie can be easily ruined by the noise from the cooling fan. In fact I only watch a movie for 40 minutes and then quit quicktime because of the noise.
I then made a test: just turn on the powerbook and does not run any application, then the fan will fire up in one and a half hour! After that, the fan will kick in every 10 minutes, and I'm sure the cpu usage is as low as 5%!
I phoned apple again, and again they said it's normal, since the fan will kick in whenever the cpu is too hot.
I'm fed up with the hot issue. Beside this, the 'A' key drops out of the keyboard after one day of use! I finally ask a refund to end my very unpleasant experience with the latest powerbook.
Now I understand why Apple will switch to intel's chip next year, power G4 is simply too hot for a laptop.
If the ibook 1.25Ghz is quiet, I probabily will get an ibook instead. Or wait till Jan. next year when apple release its Pentium based intel laptop.
Or should I get a laptop from ibm or dell?
What's your opinions?

Just set cpu to run in reduced performance in the Energy Saver, which should run around 1Ghz.
While typing this, the cpu is around 55C, and the fan has been working for the past 30 minutes without stop (the laptop has been turned on for 3hr). the keypad is really hot now. I do not think many people can stand such a hot and noisy notebook.
Anyway I think the after-sale service of apple in uk is very good. They are very polite to speak to and will arrange a collection of my powerbook then issue a refund. No hassel at all. I just hope apple's hardware could be as good.

New iMac: Screen Issues and Noisy Hard Drive

I'm writing regarding my new 27" iMac which I purchased just under a week ago (spec: 3.1GHz Intel Core i5, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM).
When I got my iMac home and unboxed it, all was fine, however once I had began to install some applications and use them, I noticed an unusual issue with the screen. I had a Skype window open on the left hand side of my screen, with an ongoing chat, Obviously, the chat 'stream' was moving, but the menu items on the far left remained the same. The iMac had been on for about 10mins, with the Skype window open for the same duration. After which, I opened iPhoto, and made it full screen, filling my screen with a dark grey background. I could still see the outline of the text from my Skype window through the iPhoto window. Thinking the window may have been semi-transparent, I closed the Skype window, however when I re-fullscreened iPhoto, the test was still there, as if it was burnt into the screen.
I understand the concept of screen burn, but surely this shouldn't happen after just 10mins? It's nothing permanent, as it fades away again within another 5mins or so, but it is annoying knowing that I can't leave a window open for very long without worrying I will have text burnt into my screen for a period of time. As a graphic designer, I could be working on images that are dark, and likewise, I don't want to see remains of my chat or emails over the top of my design work.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this an issue that can be repaired by myself (eg. installing a firmware update, although I have all the latest updates from Software Update)? Or should I just return my iMac to the store and get them to look at it? I'm worried that if I take it back, they may fail to see the issue, as the lighing is a lot different in the store to at home.
The other issue I am experiencing is I have a very noisy hard drive, that seems to click and make a grumbling noise rather a lot. Obviously at times when the computer is working hard, this is to be expected (I think), although most of the time it is grumbling away whilst I'm just browsing in Safari with one tab open.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, taken it back and has a successful replacement? I've read that it could be to do with Mac OS X Lion, because people have reported that their hard drive ran silently on Snow Leopard but has got noisier with Lion. Should I wait for a Lion update before returning it? Other than the issues above, everything is fine.

Today, I returned my iMac to the Apple Premium Resellers where I purchased it. The helpful chap there looked at my screen and acknowledged the issue, before giving me a brand new iMac.
My previous model came with Snow Leopard pre-installed, which I upgraded to Lion. This new, second iMac is a relatively new one as it has Lion pre-installed. Feeling hopeful, I've just arrived home and unpackaged my new computer.
The result? EXACTLY the same issue. My Twitter window on the far left of my display has been open for no longer than about 7 or 8 mins, and I can clearly see the display pictures from my follwees burnt into the screen when I full screen a dark app like Snow Leopard.
I'm wondering whether this is a Lion issue? Should I wait for a software update before returning it again? It's not something that's going to be annoying on a day-to-day basis, but now that I know it's doing it, I can't help but keep checking when I open iPhoto.
PEOPLE WITH NEW 27" iMAC's: Would you please perform the following test for me and let me know the results?
1. Open up a white backgrounded application, such as Twitter, Skype, or Safari.
2. Leave it on screen (anywhere, but far left seems to be worst) for about 5 to 10mins.
3. Open up iPhoto with it's grey full screen background, or set your wallpaper to a flat colour dark grey.
4. Now minimise the white backgrounded windows, and switch to a grey background with no windows in front of it.
5. Look carefully at your screen: can you still see an outline of/text from the window in the position that it was, like it's burnt into the screen?

"Apple Bluetooth Broadband built-in driver" Crashes and restarts computer

So I've been trying to install the drivers for bootcamp. I downloaded windows XP Pro SP2 smoothly, But Every time the installation is run, it crashes when it gets to the apple bluetooth broadband built-in driver. The screen will flash with the blue error screen, but then the computer restarts. Every time, it always crashes at that driver...How can I fix this?

I'm having this same problem, except I think it's crashing when the ATI driver is loading. Either the blue screen will come up or the computer will simply restart. It's driving me crazy!
When Windows comes back up there is no Boot Camp Icon and it appears only the "shell" of the drivers is installed in the programs menu (they are listed but there is nothing to them). I can't find any solutions on the net. I tried downloading driver updates from Apple but they won't download (says I need version 3.0 first... which obviously isn't downloaded properly in the first place). I've also tried getting the drivers downloaded or transferred from Bootcamp assistant, which isn't working either (as discussed in other threads).
I'm running Windows XP SP2 34 bit.
If anyone has solutions to this please post!!

Noisy Hard Drive IS NORMAL!

I just got back from my local Apple Store, where I exchanged my less than 2 week old 5G iPod because of the clunking/clicking hard drive noise that many people have been noticing.
They had many 5G iPods on display, so I went to each one, loaded up the U2 video, and listened closly to see if I could hear the clicks of the hard drive while it works to load up the video. Guess what? They ALL had the same clicking noisy hard drive, same as the one I had just returned. And also, my new one does the same exact thing.
So there you have it. Guess this is just the normal operation of these new hard drives. Now, the noise I am referring to is the clicking/clunking sound when you load up a video file or a photo album. This sound is completely normal. So, no worries! Enjoy that new iPod!!

it's a hard drive. of course its goining to make noise, doesn't your computer make noise when it starts up? Just about every kind of hard drive makes noise, its normal.

Noisy Super Drive

Just a quick question for you all.
Do any of you put up with a consistently noisy super drive. I realize that some slightly out of balance CD/DVD's can make the annoying vibration sound while spinning, but I seem to have to put up with it most all the time. I have used the drive regularly since purchacing my iMac 2 weeks after MacWorld. In using the drive I have used CDR, CDRW, DVD, DVD+R, and DVD-R, just about everything. There doesn't seem to be a consistent type, or manufacturer of media that does, or does not cause the vibration. I am beginning to wonder if somthing may be wrong with my drive since it is regularly vibrating when used.

BEWARE - Apple will NOT Confirm Powerbook App compatibility w/MacBook

I called 1-800-MY-APPLE as recommended on the MacBook tech specs page to confirm whether the various applications on my latest generation Powerbook would run on a MacBook Pro. Simply put, the "technical support" person said he could not confirm that.
I know the MacBook page says Tiger, MS Office 2004 and a few other things will work. But what about all the others? Apple should post a list of compatible existing software ASAP.

I'd second what Matthew had to say - it should be no problem - you have lots of alternatives, including UNIX ones .. - I've done 'quickie' workarounds just by 'Printing' to PDF files then to Paper thru CUPS or similar .. -
AS for new peripherals with new macs it's often desirable but very very rarely necessary... there are always adapters, converters, interfaces, external boxes etc. etc.. - e.g if new Mac has no SCSI - you can get a SCSI Interface Card, If no serial, get a USB-serial adapter .. no ATA, put it in a firewire case and compute on !! (and similar for just about every problem...)
Example:- I have an essential but 'orphaned' PCI card. It only works under early Os 9 versions - and only ever will. I just have it in an old G3 that runs ALL my 'legacy' stuff - and it's ethernet & Firewire connected to the more modern gear for faster transfers and is controlled from my main modern Machine via a (Free) VNC Client. A 2nd VNC client controls a windows machine. A 3rd controls an imac with iTunes hooked into the home/office Audio system - worthy of "Disaster Area' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_band] -and so when a client rings, it's just a quick click/spacebar and the music halts.... - all without me moving my lazy self from my Comfy chair

You can't simply change the details.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)

My hard drive continually has the floating beach ball and will take massive time to fulfill a request. And then will not boot up...so then I have to do a restore and rebuild hard drive from a past saved time machine version. Works for a little bit...then the floating beachball comes more and more...until it will not boot up again. So then I restore from a previous time machine saved version....and again it works for a day or so ... until it happens again. Now it's happening faster and faster...so I think my hard drive is dying.

have you tried looking in the App Store, to see if you can redownload iWeb and iPhoto there gratis?
If you haven’t done so already, you should purchase an external hard drive to act as a Time Machine backup destination, so that you’ll have an option to rollback to a working environment if a new OS installation is troublesome.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

I am trying to get my Canon MP190 to print with Macbook, OS10.5.8. I used to use the printers utility file to check ink levels. Now am told must go to Apple for latest drivers, etc. Where do I go??I am lost.

Bug in latest 11g JDBC driver

We have found a problem when using the latest 11g JDBC driver ("11.1.0.7.0-Production") and connecting to a 10g database. If the includeSynonyms=true property is set when opening the connection, then calling DatabaseMetaData.getColumns() will not return any columns for views. Tables and synonyms work, but not views. Without the includeSynonyms property, columns are returned correctly for tables and views, but obviously not for synonyms.
The previous 11g driver ("11.1.0.6.0-Production+") did not have this problem.
Our testing was done using ojdbc5.jar with Java 1.5, and a 10.2.0.1.0 database. I have not tested if the same problem exists when connecting to a 11g database, or when using ojdbc6.jar/Java 1.6.
Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround other than reverting to the older driver?

Are you sure that DatabaseMetaData#getColumns is actually working? AFAIK, this is not implemented feature in Oracle JDBC driver.
