Apple time capsule first version is it compatible with Yosemite

I bought a used time capsule the first versoon and I hooked that up to my computer which is Rinning Yosemite and it doesn't seem like it wants to back up will that work? With the new Yosemite ?

Hello Bigmanbear,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
It's not clear to me what the issue is you're having with the Time Capsule and your computer.  Take a look at the support article below for troubleshooting backing up with Time Machine.

  • I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge WinTV extender which allows regular TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows streaming to a Mac or iPad, iPhone, etc. I need to open a port on the router to allow this to work.

I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge Win TV extender which allows TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows for the TV to be streamed on a Mac, Iphone, Ipad. I need to access the router set up options to open a port on the router to allow this program to stream the TV to the Mac and Iphone. I do not know how to access the apple time capsule router to change the settings to open a port on the router. help please.

Firstly you do not need to open ports to stream locally.. there is no port block in local LAN.. only WAN to LAN. So there is a good chance it is not needed at all..
Opening ports on the TC I strongly recommend a v5 airport utility.. you can download one for windows if you don't have a Mac.. iOS version of the utility I am not sure but it will not work to do complex things.
In the v5 utility go to the NAT area, and click on port mappings.
Sorry I don't have a screen shot at the moment of the actual mapping page.. but simply put the IP of the device you want opened and the port.
There are plenty of posts with this info if you google.
But as noted.. this is purely WAN to LAN.. nothing else.

  • Will the Apple Time Capsule back up both Apple and Windows in a Virtual macine

Will Apple Time Capsule back up Windows as well as Apple data in a virtual machine with Parallels?

Windows home version MSBackup, cannot backup to network drives.
That was a little bonus from Bill for those who didn't fork out for Pro or Ultimate.
Like people with home versions would never need to backup to network drives.. oh no.. never!!
You need to mount the hard disk in windows for it to work.
It will help a lot if you load the airport utility for windows into your windows OS.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
Open windows explorer and type the network address of the TC.
\\TCname.local (where TCname is the correct network name of the TC).
The TC should have all names that are windows compatible.. ie
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is just wrong. It is too long, it has spaces and it has apostrophe which is illegal.
A good name for the TC is TC
The default hard disk share name of data is fine. It should not be Time Capsule or anything again that is over long .. has spaces or is otherwise incompatible with windows.
A good name for the TC wifi is TCwifi
Then you can mount it \\TC
typing that directly into the address bar of windows explorer.
There are still issues with windows naturally and running in parallels I have no idea what other issues might come up.
Tell me if you have issues.. but you will need most likely to check the network.
Open a command window and ping the TC by name and by IP address. If IP address works just mount by IP.
\\10.0.1.1 for example .. and that is the default TC IP address when in router mode.
If you still cannot access the TC my recommendation is to use a USB drive and use that.. it is 10x easier and more reliable than mixing Mac and windows backups on the TC.

  • Apple Time Capsule Keeps Dropping Internet

My Apple Time Capsule keeps dropping internet or having extremely slow internet. If I run a speed test I am getting 90+mbs. What occurs is if I try to load a page, there will be a very long delay and sometimes the page will eventually load, other times it won't. When I try to stream something from youtube, If I can get to the page of the video, it won't have an issue. When I hard wire to my modem, I don't have an issue at all. Only hardwired through the router or using wireless through the router does this occur. The light on the router never has turned amber and the link light on my modem is constantly flashing. The only thing that will occur is that the Apple Airport utility keeps connecting and disconnecting from my modem.
I've reset the router and modem. I've restored the router to factory settings and reset up my network, all to no success.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Thinking I'll replace the motorola with a Cisco DPC3010
You may find it is not much better..
I do think the problem is more on the Apple side..
If you are a tech.. let me suggest you make yourself up a 100 mbit (ie use only the two pairs) crossover cable..
If that does not work.. try reverse polarity..ie in the ethernet on one end swap + and - .. It is an issue that has cropped up before where ethernet is just wired wrongly.. and it doesn't fail completely but becomes unreliable.
BTW the hardware reliability of the new AC version apple routers.. is definitely on the bottom of the apple list.
I bought an AC TC and the first one had this WAN port issue from day one.. when I replaced it after a week (it died completely which was convenient).. the second one has been much better).
The modems I have heard that works well is the zoom or ubee..
Using another router doesn't need to be expensive.. you can still stick to the apple in bridge.. you only need a router that does routing..
And the TP-Link can be flashed to gargoyle.. a hugely superior firmware btw.. solid .. reliable and it will track usage and do a lot of stuff well beyond Apple's keen.

  • What is the most reliable modem for my Apple Time Capsule.

ooking at getting a new modem because my Router/Gateway (Arris DG960) is not translating my port forwarding from my Apple TC. I have done a lot research and the general consensus is that the best router is the Motorola SB6141. That being said over 75% of reviews that involved Apple TC's stated that they had a lot of trouble with it working with the TC. Most suggestions led me to the Zoom 5341J. It seams to have a much better success rate with Apple TC. Any other modems that I should consider? Anybody else own, experienced these routers? I am looking for a modem only, no modem/router.

I thought the Motorola SB6141 was the best choice about 8 months ago when all the glowing test reports said it was best, and I had always had good results from their products in the past. So, it might be the best.
But, I tried 3 different SB6141s over the first week and none would hold an Internet connection more than 3-4 hours.  Might have been a bad run....it happens.....but 3 trips to the store was enough, and Time Warner support said they had been getting reports of problems at the time with a firmware mixup on the Motorola, so I decided to toss a coin and try to get some work done.
I had no idea what to try next, but my wife was with me when I went out modem hunting.....and she liked the appearance of the Netgear CMD31T because she thought that it matched the AirPort Extreme nicely. Reason enough. It was "best" in her mind.
So, we tried a Netgear. Operation has been flawless since we plugged it in. Not one single drop that I know of in 8 months.....not counting a power outage during an ice storm.
The last time that I posted on a similar question to say that I had had good luck with the Netgear, it was only a few hours before another user trashed it, saying that the Motorola was the better product by far. And it might be. But, stuff like that is normal for the forums.
The Netgear might explode tomorrow, but I would probably try another if it did.
I have no idea what your results might be with any modem that you choose.

  • Nas raid connected to my Apple Time Capsule Router

    Hi,
I have the Apple Time Capsule 2TB router. I am looking into getting a Sans Digital  USB 3 SATA 6 5 bay RAID enclosure and adding at first 3 2TB WD RED HDDs. Configured as RAID 5.
    my question is this...
Can I hook the Sands Digital to the Apple Router? Does the Apple Router support this configuration? I emailed Sans Digital but they did not know the answer.
Right not I am using my ipad3 to connect to the Time Capsule router and it works great  I tried connecting a single HDD formated as Fat32 to test and that works great. The streaming from the apple router to the ipad is a little slow. this is streaming my Canon 60D mov files. The bit rate is just a little to fast for the 100mb wireless. Somebody like Apple needs to develop a Gb wireless technology. I can't believe the industry is not working on this. If Apple and others want the ipad to be a completely wireless device then this needs to happen, IMHO.

It probably won't work. I have gone through this with someone else.. unless the raid presents to the TC as if it is a single plain drive it will fail.
Use a proper NAS via ethernet. not USB.. ever.. even USB3. The amount of stuff involved in raid. just make it hard for the computer to handle. The NAS is self contained with full OS. It presents to the computer as network drive which is what you want.

Apple have released the new AC version TC a few months back.. the AC version iPad will doubtless come out in the next revision or maybe the one after.. it depends on power consumption which is probably a lot higher than standard N wireless. If this has a big impact on battery life. For now the new AC version (which is supposedly gigabit wireless.. no wireless is ever half of its claimed speed of course).. will do you no good since the wireless at both ends must match.

  • How to setup apple time capsule with FIOSinternet and VZ router?)

    Hello,
I have Apple time capsule and the VZ Router MI424WR. I current set up:
    1. VZ router - wireless off, the rest is standard
    2. Time capsule: Wireless on in Bridge mode
Result: Internet works but the wireless network is very in-stable. Airtunes is nearly not usable.
I searched in the Internet and there was several comments that is is not a good combination. Therefore it is recommended to convert the VZ router in a modem mode and use only the Time capsule as the router. I tried this several times I do not get it to work. I followed this procedure (http://data.agaric.com/node/2160) but then I need the PPPoE Account number and password. But there do I get this? The Verizon support was not really helpful.
Please, is there a good and complete description to solve that issue?
    Thanks in advance
    Moebius

Go back to your first setup ...
Verizon router with wireless turned off
Apple Time Casule with wireless turned on
    Method 1:
With the Time Capsule in "Bridge Mode", if I remember correctly, you should connect the WAN port to one of the open ports on the Verizon router (I believe bridge mode also turns off the DHCP server on the Time Capsule, if not, find that and turn if off as well).   Change the addressing mode for the Time Capsule to "static" and assign it an address on the LAN which is not in use (choose something you know is out of the way but on the LAN -- I suggest 192.168.1.180 to start -- you can change it once you get everything working).
If it doesn't work this way for you, move the cable from the WAN port on the Time Capsule to Port 1 and try again.
    Method 2:
This results in a router behind a router setup, but unless you have devices connected directly to the Verizon router, it shouldn't be a problem.
With the Time Capsule disconnected from the Verizon router, turn on "Connection Sharing" (not bridge mode) and make sure DHCP is enabled on the Time Capsule.  You need to change the address range being used by the Time Capsule (which I think defaults to 192.168.1.x to another network -- I suggest, 192.168.2.x with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and give the router an address of 192.168.2.1 on the LAN side.  Now, connection the WAN port to one of the Verizon router LAN ports.  If you had anything connected to the Verizon LAN ports, move those over to the LAN ports on the Time Capsule and reboot them.
    Method 3:
This is the least desirable of the scenarios because it relies on Verizon's crappy radio in their router (the Time Capsule has a much better radio and support 802.11n as well as b and g) whereas Verizon's only support b/g.    Go back to the configuration for Method 1, but also turn OFF wireless on the Time Capsule and turn on wireless on the Verizon router.   Try both bridge scenarios described -- using the WAN port first and if that didn't work, then moving the connection to port 1.
There is no scenario where you can place the Verizon router behind the Time Capsule -- since I believe Verizon is using all MoCA connections for the WAN side of their connection (you'd have to get Verizon to convert you to ethernet WAN and then they would not support you most likely for any STB issues with your FiOS if the Time Capsule was between the ONT and their router ... so don't even bother wasting time there ... more headaches than it would be worth.
If you're still not sure exactly what each configuration screen on the time capsule should say, post some screen snaps (or the configuration settings/choices which you are unsure about and someone will likely know the answer here).

  • Help ReadyNAS NV+ as FTP server using Apple Time Capsule

I am setting this up for somebody else. I followed http://www.readynas.com/?p=1682 to configure the ReadyNAS RND4000 NV+ and then followed http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Designing_AirPort_Networks_10.5-Windows.pdf starting on page 54 to limited success. At times I could log into the FTP server and it would Auth, but then timeout. Swapped it out with my Netgear WNR2000 and configured it and it works great. What am I missing on the Apple Time Capsule that only took me 5min to do on the WNR2000? Called Apple Care and they said they could not help since they do not provide phone support for FTP. I have spent nearly 6hrs on this and all I know is that I had it working within 5min using my WNR2000, but they really want to use their Time Capsule and I just can not get it to work.

FTP is a lot trickier than it looks and unfortunately opening ports even in a fixed range as you are doing on the readynas, (following that post you referenced). Did you open 5000-5020 for FTP?
As an odd co-incidence.. the apple utility uses port 5009 to access the TC.. when you forwarded ports in the area of the Apple Utility you may well have wreaked something. Try using different port range above 10,000.
I can understand why the Apple people would not talk to you.. they have deliberately left out ftp as a method of access to the TC.. but I have a suspicion that something else even inside it might be running ftp.. in which case when you port forward you might be messing up the internals. Or the internals are messing with you. To say nothing of the access to the internal server which could be blocked from remote access.. even if you forward the port. Apple phone support workers will have no idea about this stuff.
My recommendation for a windows network.. use a router that has normal http access. Keep the TC in the network bridged. You can get Netgear router cheap.
My other comment is, ftp has no security other than password.. it is open to man in middle attacks because passwords are sent in the clear. It is not really a great method of remote access unless you have a walled off ftp store that you don't care if others access. If you want to buy another router, get something that does vpn and use vpn to access the network.
BTW Apple do break things like vpn, ftp, telnet in some versions of their firmware.. this is a well known issue and happens across all the apple routers.. since Apple does not use those ports themselves they don't seem to give any great deal of attention to bug catching.. if you run apple network with apple products you won't need it.
    eg
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1435270?start=0&tstart=0
Do a google search for time capsule or airport (fundamentally the same thing).
I stick to my recommendation.. keep the TC as a bridged device... just buy another router.

  • Saving onto Apple Time Capsule, any Adobe program crashes, then machine crashes. Help.

The file actually saves, but the program crashes. This is happening mainly in Photoshop and Illustrator (CS6), and most of the time I am forced to restart my machine to get it going again as I try to force quit the program and the OS crashes.
    Any thoughts?
I'm on a Mac Pro running on Lion, but it also happens on my Macbook Pro, also on Lion.
    Cheers

Hi, there is a long years old thread on the apple forum about this problem, and neither Adobe or Apple seems to pay any attention to it. Hundreds (if not thousands) of users experience complete system lockup's when they try to save files from Illustrator, Photoshop, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, etc. CS4 through CS6 versions to an Apple Time Capsule wireless device whether connected by ethernet or not. The problem is exclusively happening on Adobe products and only on the Time Capsules (oldest or newest version of hardware and software). I just felt like writing about it because I crashed my Mac Pro desktop when saving from Fireworks CS6 to my brand new Time Capsule, went over to my Macbook Pro to continue to work and it locked it up as well. It is a complete system failure and you cannot do anything but turn off your computer and re-power up, even after force quit attempts on the offending Adobe products.
It is singularily the most frustrating thing I've ever encountered on a Mac, and the only time I have ever had it truly lock the system hardware. I only wish Adobe and Apple would pay attention to their forums and do something about it. Meanwhile what we all do is save our work to our desktops and then transfer it to the Time Capsule, and less than stellar user experience.
Thought I'd mention it - maybe if enough people know about the issues (which has reported countless times to both Adobe and Apple), it will get investigated and fixed.

  • Speed drop page caused by Apple Time capsule????

    hi all,
I have had BT infinity for about 2 months and prior to that I had regular 8MB broadband
the first fews days were great getting about 30-40MB
then the speed drops to below 1MB!!
I have an apple time capsule which is connected to the BT Homehub via ethernet for wireless printing, NAS drive, speakers and back up of my apple hardware (no windows based hardware in the home)
after numberous phonecalls to support this is what has happened:
reboot openreach hub and BT homehub brings speed back up again
First BT openreach engineers changed the white openreach modem
Second engineer said that everything was fine but the Time Capsule was the cause..
I have searched online and cannot see any reason as the time capsule is working fine.. it has never needed any re-boot etc etc
    please any advice would help
    Thanks
    Bhav

You may be suffering http://community.bt.com/t5/forums/replypage/board-id/BTInfinity/message-id/51544 or a variant.  Also summarised in http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/BT-Infinity-2-Home-Hub-3-Speed-drops-to-less-that-1Mbit-Uploa...
It looks as if you will have to suffer occasional drops and reboots or similar (as in the threads) until BT fix the Hub firmware.  Unlikely to be the Time Capsule.

  • Stream7 on Apple Time Capsule

By separating the 2.4GHz for the 5GHz network abilities of the my Apple Time Capsule (giving the 5GHz it's own unique SSID like "network-bert" for the 2.4GHz and "network-bert-5G" for the 5GHz network) I was able to connect my new Stream7 with my home WiFi network.
I just put this post here since I noticed more Stream7 users having the same issue while connecting to an Apple Airport Device. Hopefully it is of some help to you.
    Regards,
    Bert

The instructions are not really Mac OS.. they are related to the using the airport utility.. the windows version of the utility is very similar in layout.. you just use the utility and follow the instructions.
If you have issues.. give us a few screen shots of where you get stuck.. overall the port forwarding is fairly simple.
If you have lots of Macs in the environment.. you can do the setup from one of those.. you do not need to setup port forwarding from the computer that will be the target for ports to be opened.. it makes no difference as long as you lock its IP address.

  • IGMP snooping functionality on apple time capsule & extreme

    Hi,
I use an apple time capsule which has 7.7.3 version in it. There is an option in apple capsule to enable or disable IGMP snooping,
Does apple capsule disables forwarding multicast packets on disabling IGMP snooping?
On wire-shark, I can see an IGMP query message is going out of apple capsule on enabling "IGMP snooping" and there is no IGMP query message from apple capsule when IGMP snooping is disabled. Based on IGMP V3 standard, a IGMP query is sent by router. On "IGMP snooping" disabled case, is it host's responsibility to forward multicast packets?
And I have an airport extreme as well which does not have IGMP snooping enable/disable functionality. How IGMP and multicasting works on this?
    Thanks

And I have an airport extreme as well which does not have IGMP snooping enable/disable functionality. How IGMP and multicasting works on this?
What model and firmware is the extreme?
If you look under the wireless options in the 5.6 utility it shows multicast as preconfigured to on.. and set to low by default. you had the option to set higher if you wished with the result that more of the wireless bandwidth was reserved to handle multicast.
You might need to use the older utility if it is Gen5 or earlier as some functionality was simply removed in the v6 airport utility and never returned.
    IGMP never rates a mention.
I cannot answer your specific question.. but is the IGMP set on by default?? If so I expect apple was thinking it should automatically handle the bandwidth demand whereas the older ones had issues with this and needed manual setting when using wireless. If you turn it off then multicast will have issues I am guessing.

  • Configuring Apple Time Capsule with Netgera DG834N modem

I'm configuring a wirless system with:
a 3 year old Netgear DG834N modem / router set to modem only mode
a 6 month old Apple Time Capsule
    a new Netgear WNDR4500 router
Previously I'd linked the ATC in bridged mode to the DG834N with the latter in modem + router mode and all was fine with no conflicts between the ATC and DG834N.
    Questions:
what is the best mode for the ATC now that it links to the modem only mode DG834N?
do I need to run each on separate non-conflicting channels for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands?

OK.. sorry I should have twigged with the TNZ.. pppoa is a b pain in the nether regions.. that should get through all the apple filters for language.. but privately I would fill it out with the aussie slang version. In Australia all our ISP use pppoe and some allow pppoa as well. You cannot bridge to pppoa.. the nature of the beast is that it has to happen on the modem.. ie the ATM interface.
There are tricks to get around it.
    1. Obviously just use the modem router as your main router.. that solves the problem but as a router,, it is lousy. Netgear build all their modems with minimal interface. And it is slow.
    2. Since you cannot do full bridge you can use half bridge.. this used to be common but not so much now. It has some issues with dynamic IP and lots of linux based routers spit the dummy. (almost everything is now linux due to free source). Look up the 834N if it is possible to do half bridge and give it a try .. Maybe with DGTeam firmware.. there are alternative firmware to some netgear models since the netgear one is so devoid of functionality. Other modems do support it.. it is not gone but well down the list now. (FYI: the problems with half bridge is the IP rotates but the client doesn't have the IP updated until the local lease time expires... so lease is set to ridiculously short times to compensate. )
    3. DMZ.. this is double NAT but without a lot of the bad effects.. A router in dmz of another router simply passes all packets both ways as if it is a bridge. The problem is speed.. packets only go as fast as the router can handle them.. Adsl aint that fast so it isn't an issue that way.
More importantly, you are still filling the NAT table of the modem's router, so it can fall over with too many connections.
    4. There are two tricks but Netgear would have to be replaced. Also the router has to support pptp to pppoa relay. Not sure if the WNDR4500 will but it is used by dd-wrt if that is possible. Pain to setup but very solid.. Thomson speedtouch and later models all support this. You make the connection to the modem via a pptp tunnel..which is able to pass the authentication.
The Draytek also support a trick using pppoe to pppoa relay.. look at models like 120.. This is different to the above but using a similar trick. (There are a few other brands to offer it but you can see draytek have specialised in it.. it is common issue in uk which is a big market for them.)
    http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor120.html
Note specific reference to apple routers.
    5. One to One NAT.. this is true NAT.. what is normally referred to as NAT is NAPT. One public address to many private addresses. True NAT is like DMZ.. it does pass through the router.. but all packets are simply passed from one public to one private IP.
This mode is available on speedstream models like 4200.. 6520... bit ancient now.. but they worked really well. Most people looked at the interface and had no idea what NAPT and NAT stood for. And Siemens wasn't bright enough to explain it.
Thomson has it.. but hard to setup. Draytek have most modes although not tried in their modems.
    That probably covers the field.
Most people resign themselves to 1.
I wouldn't bother with netgear forum.. but look at forums for your Telecom NZ and look at solutions people are using to run a router behind the pppoa authentication problem.

  • Wrt320n with Apple Time Capsule in Wireless sharing mode

    Hi!
I try to connect my LinkSys wrt320n with Apple Time Capsule with mode "sahring existing wireless network" and so Time capsule doesn't work. It gets IP, but writes "isn't internet connection, WiFi network don't find" and also in the admipage of my wrt320 I can't see Time Capsule as client.
Is it possible to make this mode with these two?
Thanks for your advice and solutions.

    AlexFedy wrote:

For setting up the Time Capsule to work as a wireless station, the WAN port should be connected to a modem. In your case, the WAN port should be connected to the to the ethernet port of the router since the modem is already connected to the Linksys. By the way, you don't need to setup a wireless station anymore since you already have a router, unless it serves as another purpose. In addition to that, if you want to setup the TC to do backup then you cannot use it as a wireless station anymore. • Will HP Designjet 500 work with Apple Time Capsule?

I have an Apple Time Capsule Base station and was wondering if it would be able to allow my dad's Dell Precisions (M4500 and M4700) to print to it wirelessly. We had a part of our basement finished for his new office and his plotter (HP Designjet 500) is outside the office, about 20ft away from both his laptops and my Time Capsule is on a shelf just above it. I'm just curious as it's an old plotter from like, 2001 so its old.

Really don't know but it is worth a go..
Simply plug the printer into the TC via its USB port.
On the PC load the airport utility for windows, whichever version he uses.. but the latest version utility is 5.6.1 for win7. That will also load bonjour for windows which is a big help to using network resources like printers.. you can then use the airport utility to make sure the TC has picked up the printer.
Then load the printer and have a shot at printing.
    Suck and See.
