Apple TV/Bonjour:Localized Implementation

Hi, I am working with a network that spans multiple campuses and we are in the process of installing Apple TVs to conference room projectors in order to do wireless projecting. Our end result is that we want to only have local Apple TVs show up on user's devices(for instance, when connected wirelessly to APs closest to the conference room, only show that Apple TV, and in most general locations, show no Apple TV.) The way our network is set up is that there are 2 major VLANS, the one used for wireless connection via 802.1x, and the wired network.
We have used this guide and deployed the avahi bonjour gateway, which gives us connections over L3. But that is just the issue. Now all Apple TVs will show up to a user's device, regardless of physical location. Does anybody know of an easy way to:
1. Determine the AP a client is connected from(possibly through a SNMP trap?)
2. If the AP is a specified AP, allow the visibility of the specific Apple TV
The only thing I can think of is that in addition of having 1 general purpose wired and wireless VLAN(I'll call them 10 and 11 for namesake), and then create additional VLANS per conference room, for wired devices using the conference room's ethernet jacks(including the Apple TV, it can't do 802.1x), and for the local Access points in that area. So that breaks down to
10-general wired
11-general wireless
12-conference room 1 wired/apple TV and nearby wireless APs
13-conference room 2 wired/apple TV and nearby wireless APs
etc.
Also, according to many articles online, Cisco is going to be integrating a bonjour gateway into their wireless controllers, which should be able to replace the avahi box. It also states that it will have the ability to create user-based access to certain bonjour devices like Apple TVs, but is there a possibility that there will also be the ability to restrict by connected AP?

I don't think there is a good way to prevent that. I don't think the wlc (future code) will have the ability to deny a client access to a device unless its close to an access point.
The only way I can see this work is if you create a vlan for every Apple TV and and the AP in that room on a different ap group so you can map the Apple TV SSID to that specific vlan. You would need I remove the bonjour gateway though.
This means you have to create more vlans (one per Apple TV), add ap groups and create small subnets.
Of course I'm thinking out loud, but that would be the only way I can see it working right now.

  • Apple MAC Bonjour and Cisco Aironet 1142

    Hi All,
       Hope all is well.
We have a strange issue with our two Aironet 1142s and how it interacts with our Apple laptops. When we try printing to a printer in one room connected to (let's call it Aironet 2) we can't. We attempt to browse using Bonjour (Apple's protocol) to the printer and can't. HOWEVER.. we can print and browse fine when we're using Aironet 1.
Another strange thing is when we're on Aironet 2 we can ping to the printers just fine, just can't browse to is using Bonjour nor print of course.
    Please help! Any inputs appreciated.
    -Tom

    Natalia,
You need to do the following to make Bonjour printing to work.
Have multicast enabled on the wired side for all the vlans involved (management, ap manager, client, APs). if any of these vlans are not properly setup, then bonjour will not work.
    Wired Side:
    Router:
    ip multicast-routing (enable multicast globally)
For each vlan interface enable ip pim sparse-dense-mode:
    conf t
    interface vlan x
ip pim spare-dense-mode (there may be a syntax error, dont have router access at the moment)
also you may need to configure a rendevouz point which you can set to layer 3 interface of the management vlan.
For example (management ip 10.1.1.10 and g/w is 10.1.1.1)
ip pim rp-address 10.1.1.1 (again syntax maybe incorrect)
Note: you will have to configure the same on all routers in between the WLC and the APs
Also make sure that the ipads/iphones and wireless printers are connected to the same ssid (same vlan). Bonjour uses link local address which are not routable.
on the WLC, set up multicast multicast mode with a unique mutlicast ip address. Also, on the multicast tab, Controller > multicast > enable global multicast.
There is a catch here. You will mostly likely have to turn off IGMP snooping on the controller (controller > multicast > disable igmp snooping).  I have learnt it the hard way that some of the apple devices dont send the igmp join reports.

  • Cisco WLC Apple TV Bonjour

Hi my name is Ivan, I have a question:
My wireless deployment needs to work with Apple TV services, Multicast, with 120 SSID's, 120 AP Groups, 120 sub interfaces virtual, AVC, QoS, Local Policy and improve the services RF (RRM, DCA, TPC, Coverage).
    My question is:
Which is the best services to the WLC?
    Regards.
    Ivan.

Is possible create 120 subinterfaces dynamic on the WLC, 120 SSID's andgroups and tunning the WLC to provide services RF (RRM, DCA, TPC, Coverage, AVC, others)
    Yes, it is supported
This table lists the AP groups supported on various controller platforms:
    Controller Platform
    AP Groups Supported
    Cisco 2500 Series Wireless Controller
    50
    Cisco 5500 Series Wireless Controller
    500
    Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller
    200
    Cisco 7500 Series Wireless Controller
    6000
    Cisco 8500 Series Wireless Controller
    6000
    Cisco Wireless Services Module 2
    1000
In a side note, since you put 1 AP per class room, it may not the ideal from RF perspective. So I would try to use only 5GHz for these services. (if you use 2.4GHz there may be too many APs can hear each other loud & may have cochannel interference).
Read below documents as it covers in depth drawbacks of this design. you can consider those points when deploying

  • Cisco SA520W - Apple TV Bonjour issues

    Hello all,
I am having issues setting up Apple TV with Cisco SA520W router. I have activiated Bonjour under Bonjour Configuration. I have also unblocked multicase traffic. However, still my iPhones and iPAD are not seeing Apple TV, nort Apple TV sees any of the devices.
All of my devices are going over the wifi. Could anyone help.
    Thanks,

did you ever figure this out??

  • Dropped Macbook.  Apple Store Vs. Local retailer

So my Macbook Pro got knocked off a table at the security checkpoint at Ontario airport yesterday by some careless woman (I believe, these kind of things always happen the moment I turn away) and I have to get it fixed. The lower and upper case is bent and the screen shell is bent on one side also. Anyone know about how much this will cost (I know it will take some coin)? Also, for a repair like this, should I just use my local apple retailer or should I take it to the apple store?
    ~D

I would take it to a local authorised service centre and have them look at it and discuss it with them. There's nothing like a bit of face to face to hopefully get then to manually straighten some bits out for you keeping your costs down so you are then only paying labour and not additional parts than absolutely necessary.
Another option is to go to a parts reseller such as PB Parts…
    http://www.pbparts.com/
… and buy the bits and do the job yourself.

  • Why does Apple use Bonjour?

Can I ask a simple question to others?
Why is it that Apple prides itself for simplicity and reliability does it employ a flakey protocol called Bonjour?
Firstly I would like to point out that anything with a French name is going to have disaster written on it and secondly, why are they using a protocol that clearly causes wireless problems against some manufacturers of routers?  Surely we are going back to the bad old days of Windows WINS or hostname technology when really we should be using DNS or IP technology.
    Best Regards
    Servlan.

Why is it that Apple prides itself for simplicity and reliability does it employ a flakey protocol called Bonjour?
Your question is for Apple. They are not here. Apparently, you did not read the Terms of Use Agreement for this area.
This is a forum for users. Even if we know the answer, we can't speak for Apple regarding a design decision made by Apple.
If you want Apple to hear you, you need to contact them directly. They will not respond on this forum.

the question is why a company does not allow local sync and why they want to force users to load their private calender and conatcts to the free use of nsa onto american servers!???
maybe the same reason why mavericks is for free?
    maybe spondored by nsa?
apple declared that they do what they want, as long as it is acceped.
Am I really the only one who wants local sync of data and ***** on cloud computing?????

you cannot syn local anymore under mavericks and latest itunes.
that is it and apples does officially tell this.

  • Getting Lion from Apple store in local mall

So if I want a Flash version of Lion today I can just walk into an Apple store with a 4 GB drive and they'll load it for me?

No, that's not why. Copying the installer to a flash drive only requires the space needed by the installer application. There's no Lion installation performed on the flash drive assuming an Apple store can help out. But a 4 GB flash drive only formats to 3.51 GBs which isn't enough space for the installer.

  • Samba : Apple please update your implementation

My system is experiencing a number of bugs related to Samba. Running smbd -V reports 3.0.10 which is the same as what Tiger shipped with. The bugs I'm experiencing have been fixed at samba.org's website (currently at 3.0.21c) but Apple has not updated ever (15 months since 3.0.10 was released). Please Apple release a newer version of Samba.
(I know I can compile the latest Samaba version and install it but Apple's software updates say this may cause system instability after new patches are applied).

I'm suffering from Apple's outdatet Samba installation as well. (Directory binding with Windows 2003 Server with SP1 is explicitly broken in Samba before 3.0.14a)
I've filed this on the Apple Radar. Current status is "duplicate". Has been for a long time now... Dunno if they will ever update Samba. My fear of braking the OD integration keeps me from compiling my own Samba.

  • HT204411 If a country isn't listed, what can we do as users to apply/request it? Does Apple add them or does a country have to apply to Apple for a local App Store?

What to do to add the App Store for Bangladesh...?

Yes I am sure more countries will be added and been waiting long. But I don't think it just depends on Apple deciding when they'll have an App Store in a given country. There are regulatory matters and I'm sure there is some proper channel they go through. And this would interest me. If our country needs to apply anywhere I'm sure there are enough iOS users to facilitate a pettition etc.

  • Apple Mail Hotmail local DB lost

    Hi
My problem is about Apple Mail and my hotmail account:
Recently i've upgraded Lion to 10.7.3, i don't know if this is tha cause but when i try to launch Mail, it shows the wizard for configuring a new account...
    and where are my emails???
    what can i do?

It is strange, indeed. I'm running here 8 mail accounts in Mail, some Gmail and 2 with private ISP's, all IMAP, and one corporate MS Exchange account, all without the slightest problem on my side, also in 10.8.2.
Since it's Exchange and nothing will get lost, I'd strongly recommend to back up mail folders on your Mac under the account, then delete the troublesome mail account entirely, shut down mail, reboot or at least log out and back in, then set up the mail account from scratch. It works well automatically, usually, but go carefully through the options, e.g. ports, server-side mail folders etc., to make sure Mail actually has access to wherever the mails are on the server. It should work absolutely fine for you then, too.

  • WLC - AP Groups - Multicast - Bonjour - Apple TVv3

    Good Morning
first off - Should start off by saying I have followed the Apple Bonjour deployment guide [except for interface group] portion
I have searched high and low, here and there to no avail.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/products_tech_note09186a0080bb1d7c.shtml
I am aware that the bonjour gateway IOS may or may not come out in Oct/Nov 2012, which maybe my only option at this point.
Is this not working because of my AP groups setup or have I misssed something
I can only get bonjour to work if multicast - unicast mode is selected, but our network slowly grinds to a halt, so it is not an option
when I first connect to the wireless I see 1 bonjour device for about 3 minutes and then disappears.
I can not see the appletv at all with an ipad, airplay does not appear at all.
    We have the following setup.
2 campuses - Campus 2 is simular setup, but WLCs higher model and ios 7.2 and clients and subnets are double
    Campus 1
    2 WLC 4404 ios 7.0.230.0
30 AP groups mapped to 30 Interfaces using subnets with /23 bit subnetmasks
multicast - multicast is set with multicast addresses of
    controller 1 239.239.5.1 and
    controller 2 239.239.5.2
    multicast is enabled
    IGMPsnooping as well
On Switch multicast routing is enabled
all AP group subnets and Mgmt vlans are PIM enabled dense mode
set up a trunk to ubuntu server to act as a bonjour gateway, installed avahi and vlan
