Applescript for converting UTF-8 (styled )to ASCII

Does anyone know of an applescript built to change text encoding from UTF-8 to standard ASCII 7 bit?
I found something called TEC_OSAX1.3.3 on the macscripter forum but was unable to get it to work (I think because it is a classic application). Any help on this would be appreciated as well (can't open the readme file).
I have a standard UTF-8 XML file that I want to prepare to upload to a web site but I need all the extended UTF-8 characters converted into the standard ASCII characters.
I have enough applescript experience to do very basic operations but not enought to build something more complex like this.
Any help would be appreciated.

There's no way to convert "extended" UTF-8 into ASCII, since the latter doesn't contain the required characters. Unless you are talking about converting them into NCR's like & #1234;. If that's the idea, there's an app called UnicodeChecker which can do it.
Sometimes UTF-8 can be converted to ISO-8859-1. Is that what's required?
Why exactly do you need to do this? Is your server one those few which are (mis)configured to only support Latin-1? If so, this can usually be fixed by other means, like an .htaccess file in your web space.
If you are just talking about one or a few files, you can simply open with TextEdit set to UTF-8 and then save in the new encoding.

It looks like the LabVIEW Sound and Measurement Suite would do the trick, or possibly Diadem, though I'm not sure if you have LabVIEW. What program are you trying to open the file with? It may also have a package you can download that supports all of the formats. For instance, there appears to be a UFF file reader and writer if you Google "uff files" in the top result, but that's only if you were using a specific program. But I suppose the easiest way would be if you already had the Sound and Measurement Suite.

No. That is like saying that since UTF-8 is 8 bit based then it can't be mapped to UTF-16. But it does.
EBCDIC either directly supports or has versions which support multibyte character sets. A multibyte character set can encode any fixed format sized character set. The basic idea is the same way UTF-8 works.
Multibyte character sets have the added benifit that most of the data in the world is from the ASCII character set and the encodings always support that using only 8 bits. Thus the memory savings over UTF-16 (or UTF-32) are significant.

How to convert UTF-16 to UTF-8

data source is 'ъѓъѓ№ѓфчр Фюыр№ 80Ъ ', it is Ukraine.
I want to remove the blank, but no matter which key word in SAP I use, it doesn't work. i checked hexadecimal of the space from the text above , it is 00A0, but actually system only regard 0020 as space. i checked on internet, the space of the text should be encoded with UTF-16 and system is UTF-8, 00A0 is extended ASCII, so 00A0 can't be seen in SAP system.
my question is in this situation, how can a remove the space?

Applescript to convert PDF to JPEG using Preview?

I know there's an existing script available on the internet that converts PDFs to JPEGs (it's here: http://macscripter.net/viewtopic.php?id=25350) BUT, for whatever reason, the quality, even when set to 600dpi, is crap. I get better results simply opening the PDF in Preview then saving as JPEG... even a 150dpi JPG from Preview is higher quality than a 600dpi file from this script I found...
So, what I need help with is creating a applescript that converts PDF's to JPEGs using Preview (or whatever, as long as the quality of the JPEG is good). I have very little scripting experience so help is appreciate.

I tried the script you wrote and created the Automator workflow with the single action as requested, saved it to the desktop then selected it when your script's dialogue requested it. However, at that point your script game me the following error. Ideas? I did save the workflow as a workflow and I selected it directly, so I'm not sure why it thinks that the "workflow file does not exist" ? :

Help with a simple applescript for combining Artist text with Track name

Hi all,
I'd like to put together a simple script that takes the artist names from a list of tracks in iTunes and copies the text to the start of the Title name, followed by " - ".
This is because, e.g. on a classical album, I want the artist names to all be "Classic Collection Gold" but I'd like to keep the artist name contained with the track name. This means when I browse by artist I don't get millions of artists...
I found this script, which does something kinda similar, but I'm new to script writing so not sure how to do it?
So I'd like to change:
Name
Planets: Mars
Artist
Gustav Holst
Ambum:
Simply Classical Gold (Disc 2)
To be:
Gustav Holst - Planets: Mars
Artist

I'm not sure what that script thinks it's doing, but it's essentially doing nothing, so scrub that and start afresh.
The first thing you need is a way to identify the tracks to change - you don't want to do all tracks in the library (they might have already been munged). A good option is to work on the selected tracks:

Help Needed: Automator Applescript for Folder Action - Encode Video

Hi !
I have created an Automator Applescript for a Folder Action to do the following:
When a new video file is moved to the target folder (i.e. Download of Vuze is done), automatically launch the Applescript Action that does the followin g(Applescripted):
1) Using "run shell script" and FFMPEG on a UNIX command line, determine Width/Height, Framerate, Bitrate
2) Calculate encoding parameters (slightly reduced bitrate, reduced Aspect etc.)
3) Using "run shell script" with ffmpeg on the command line and the calculated parameters to encode the video file
At the same time, the action is written to a log file so I know if a file is recognized, when encoding started etc.
It works fine if I save this Action as an .app, make an alias on the Desktop and drop video files on it.
It also works fine if I attach the script to a folder as a folder action and drag a video file in there.
However, when I attach the script as a folder action to the Vuze download folder, it encodes only some video files, i.e. if there was a download of 5 files, chances are good that it will not encode 1 or 2 files out of those 5.
If for example a second download finishes while the encoding for the first download is still going on, sometimes the second file starts encoding after the first encode finishes, sometimes it does not, the file does not make the log file at all, i.e. the folder action missed it or the automator action dropped it because it was still encoding. Still, sometimes it happens, sometimes not.
As I need a solution that is 100% accurate, I would like to ask if there are any ideas on how to do this better maybe? As I am not an Applescript Guru, I would need some help to know what works and what doesn't and what the syntax is.
My main idea right now:
Similar to how ffmpegX works with its "process" application, have a second script (as .app) that receives the files to be encoded from the automator action and puts them in a queue, then proceeds to encode this queue while the main automator action is free to receive the next file.
Writing this second app is quite straightforward (a modified version of my current script) but I have some questions I need help with:
1) How do I call another applescript from within an existing applescript that launches the new applescript in a new process?
2) How do I pass parameters to this new applescript?
3) In case of this "Queueing" Idea, once I called the external applescript the first time, how do I make sure when I call next time, that I don't open a second instance of this script but rather pass another queue item to the original instance to be processed?
Or in general: Is there a better way to achieve this automatic encoding solution that I have not thought about?
Alternatively:
Does anyone know how to call the "process" application that comes with the ffmpegX package with the correct parameters to use as a queueing / processing tool?

To do this, I created an Automator workflow with an Applescript snippet to change the 'media kind'.
Here is the 'Run Applescript' workflow step code:

Prior to this running, I have an 'Import Files into iTunes' workflow step.
You can switch out 'movie' with: 'TV show', 'music video', or anything in ITLibMediaItemMediaKind.

In the former Firefox version there was a box to click for converting YouTube music videos into HQ mp3 files. That box is no longer apparent in the new Firefox version. I went back to Ad-On s and re-downloaded the program YouTube to MP3 1.2. It says it's not compatible with Firefox 6.0. Can I reinstall the older version of Firefox?

When I clicked on the second site mentioned, I got such EXPLICIT, step-by-step directions!!! Thank you so much. I'd been wondering what that window was that kept popping up with the Firefox icon and that other funny thing. The word *install* was never mentioned. Pictographs were never my thing.
When I looked under the initial system requirements, it said that OS X 10.4.5 and higher were good for 5.0. I didn't check further. Under your advice, I'll go with the older version. Thank you for taking the time to help me.
