Applescript, Illustrator CS5 and Saving as a PDF

Hello,
First I'm not sure if this is the best spot to post this but I figure I would start here! I'm a rookie applescripter and can find code and piece it together to get things done. The issue I've recently come across has to do with saving files as a pdf with Illustrator CS5 and the file type and creator. In the code below, if the code is changed to save as pdf (no options), the type and creator end up being question marks. I changed it to save with options and backed the pdf version to Acrobat 5, then the type and creator were correct.
set fileTypes to {"EPSF", "PDF ", "ART5", "TEXT"} -- file types available to resave as Illustrator
-- get a sourceFolder that holds the files to resave as AI
set sourceFolder to (choose folder with prompt "Choose a folder with files to resave as PDF:") as text
-- get a list of files of the defined type in the sourceFolder
tell application "Finder" to set workingFiles to (every file of folder sourceFolder whose file type is in fileTypes) as alias list
-- now you have your fileList argument
-- get a destinationFolder to hold the eps files
set destinationFolder to choose folder with prompt "Choose a folder to hold the pdf files:"
SaveFilesAsPDF(workingFiles, destinationFolder)
on SaveFilesAsPDF(fileList, destinationFolder)
set destinationPath to destinationFolder as string
repeat with aFile in fileList
tell application "Finder"
set fileName to displayed name of aFile -- get displayed name
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to "."
set newFileName to text item 1 of fileName
set newFilePath to destinationPath & newFileName & ".ai"
end tell
tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
open aFile
tell current document
set selected of every page item to true
do javascript "var docRef = activeDocument;docRef.fitArtboardToSelectedArt(0);"
end tell
save current document in file newFilePath as pdf with options {class:PDF save options, compatibility:Acrobat 5, preserve editability:true, color resample:bicubic downsample, color downsampling:20, color compression:automatic JPEG medium}
close current document saving no
end tell
end repeat
end SaveFilesAsPDF
-- END CODE
The two questions I have are:
1. Is this an issue with Illustrator or something in my code?
2. Is this the proper spot to report the issue?
Regards,
John

Hey gregery,
Please let me know what Acrobat version are you using.
Also, go to File> Properties> Security and check whether form filling is allowed or not as shown below:

  • I'm working with Illustrator CS5 and am having trouble with basic graphics textures.

I'm working with Illustrator CS5 and am having trouble with basic graphics textures. The illustrator drawings look fine with the pattern fills and when I bring the drawing into quark 9.1 they are still fine. When I print the quark file to lo res pdf drawing is still fine, but when I print to hi res pdf (press quality for print) the patterns disappear. I cannot figure out what the problem is.
just a note. Other textures and artistic fills work fine. It seems to be just the basic ones. I'm wondering if for some reason they may not be saved completely in my libraries?

Its just a drawing in black and white with some basic graphic texture to show “dirt”  The pattern consists of a bunch of small lines. I save the file as an eps. And bring it into quark.  When I print from quark I say print to pdf as press quality. I don’t think the problem has to do with acrobat because I’ve never encountered these problems before CS5. These drawings have been around for years and all of a sudden they don’t work.
    Does this help?

  • Illustrator CS5 and Cutting Master 2 (Craft Robo V1.94) plugin

I have a problem with Illustrator CS5 and a Cutting Master 2 (Craft Robo V1.94) Plugin for a Graphtec Craft Robo Pro vinyl cutter.
When trying to plot from Illustrator the dialogbox that normally appears does not show and after sometime I get a message Cutting Master 2 timeout.
Until this appears, Illustrator is Unresponsive.
I have tried to uninstall the plugin, restart my PC (windows 7 - 64 bit) and reinstall the plugin without success.
It has been working earlier, the problem recently appeared - any suggestions on how to overcome this very annoying problem?
Message was edited by:Skilteskoven.  I have now been investigating the problem further, and it seems that an automatic update of windows (I have disabled that feature now!!) - Internet Explorer 11 for windows 7 is causing the problem. I have tried on two different PC, one windows 7, 32 bit and the other windows 7, 64 bit. On both PC the problem as described above occurs when Internet Explorer is installed - anyone who could give me a suggestion on what is going on? How can IE11 cause a plugin in Illustrator to stop working?

    Hi
    Me too.
You can go back to ios 10.8 providing you have a time machine back up. Thats what I had to do.
    Graphtec are updating drivers and a schedule is here;

    charmi,
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

If you have Adobe Acrobat (not Adobe Reader) the program can perform an OCR on the document you acquired.
In the past I used ABBYY FineReader

  • Can only draw circle and square in Illustrator CS5 and Photoshop CS5

I am experiencing a strange bug that seems to be affecting both Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5. In Illustrator, when I try to draw a rectangle or ellipse I can only draw circles and squares. Also I can't change the color of selected objects. When I try to change its fill nothing happens. I can also only drag objects on the 0, 45 and 90 degree angles. Also I can no longer select off an object by clicking on the artboard. When I click on the artboard nothing happens.
Similarly in Photoshop I can only draw straight lines using the brush tool. The  marquee tool is also not functioning properly. When I try to use the marquee tool the marching ants form a square but when I release the mouse it selects a rectangular portion. Strangely if I use the marquee tool and make selection I can press the shift key and add to it but this second selection's marching ants are not square but are properly rectangular.
Since the problem seems to be affecting both Illustrator and Photoshop I'm thinking it's probably some kind of system conflict or perhaps an application running in the background is affecting it. Also if I restart my mac the problem goes away. Unfortunately the problem eventually returns.
Anyway I'm pretty sure most of the suggested fixes involve systematically going through all the programs running in the background and trying to determine which if any might be affecting Illustrator and Photoshop but I just thought I'd post something in case someone else had the problem or knew of any fixes.
    I'm running CS5 on a MBP.
    Thanks!

Ok I figured out the problem. It was another application called teleport which lets you control 2 macs with one mouse. It requires a hot key and in my case that was the shift key. Even though it was running it was still affecting me. Had to quit it and restart. If you're having a similar problem I'd check to see you're not running any other applications that can be activated with a hot key.

  • Problem using Illustrator CS5 and CC 2014 in same PC

    Hi,
I am developing some Illustrator scripts using VBScript, which should work on CS5, CS6 or CC 2014. When the scripts will be called, the user will pass, as command line argument, which Illustrator version they want to use. Accordingly I am instantiating the appropriate Illustrator scripting object by the following code:
        If version = 1 Then
            Set appRef = CreateObject("Illustrator.Application.CS5")
        ElseIf version = 2 Then
            Set appRef = CreateObject("Illustrator.Application.CS6")
        ElseIf version = 3 Then
            Set appRef = CreateObject("Illustrator.Application.CC.2014")
        Else
            Set appRef = CreateObject("Illustrator.Application")
        End if
This is working correctly in one system where CS5 and CC 2014 are both installed. However, in another similar system, where CS5 and CC 2014 are both installed, this is failing. There, always the CC 2014 version is being used, even when the user wants to use CS5. On inspection it is found that the issue is with registry entry of LocalServer32 subkey of the Illustrator.Application.CS5 automation object. There I see, the path of CC 2014 executable is stored, not that of CS5. The value is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 (32 Bit)\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe /automation. Hence, the statement CreateObject("Illustrator.Application.CS5") is actually starting the CC 2014 Illustrator version.
Does anyone know how this could have happened? Is this some installation behavior of CS5 or CC 2014, that can be controlled? In this machine CC 2014 was installed after CS5. Does CC 2014 change the registry settings of CS5, if it was installed? That seems very unlikely, as then how can one use both CS5 and CC 2014 in a system through scripts? It is possible that this is a one-off case where the registry entries have been "accidentally" changed. However, I would like to be sure.
I can re-install CS5 in this system where the issue is noted and probably the problem will go away. However, the scripts may be used in many different installations and I cannot possibly ask users to reinstall Illustrator everywhere. Moreover, this problem can occur sometimes in the future too.
Any suggestion regarding the cause and a possible full-proof solution will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joydeep Ray

  • Illustrator CS5 and Macbook Pro with Retina Display

Anyone have any word on the compatibility here? As a freelancer, Illustrator CS5 is one of my main tools. I've heard there'll be an update to Photoshop, but haven't heard anything about Illustrator.
    Thanks

I hope they update CS5 because things look pretty terrible if you ask me. Everything renders all pixely and it's dang near impossible to tell if your images look sharp or not. Essentially, everything is pixelated no matter how sharp the image is when you open it.
Retina looks like it is going to make designing for the web a nightmare. When you deal in pixels and can actually distingish pixel increments by sight on the screen, a display like this is proving to be quite counterproductive. For print and vector based graphics, etc, I think it will be a much different situation, the graphics don't look that bad in CS5 on a retina display. You can see pixelization around edges but gradients are smooth at least and the blacks are incredible.
This is going to make web design a royal pain though.

  • Is There a Manual for Illustrator CS5 and Where Do I Find It?

I just got Adobe Illustrator CS5. Aside from downloading the trial and playing around with it, I'm new to the Illustrator CS5 product. Most software tends to come with a manual on the CD-Rom/DVD, but for some reason, all I can find is a short readme file.
Am I missing something? Does this software not come with a manual? If it does, does anyone know where in the CD/DVD directory I can find it?

It does not come with a manual but you can purchase books that will guide you as well as a manual.
Real World Illustrator or the Quick Start Series.
But the help files are good and there are video tutorials available on Adobe TV which are very good.

  • Illustrator CS5 (and Indesign) quits unexpectedly...

Downloaded the CS5 premium. I'm having trouble with Illustrator (and Indesign)
Whenever I try to load Illustrator, the application quits when I'm at the startup panel, it doesn't get past 'updating font menu 30%'
Same with Indesign when I try to open 'new file' it quits.
Photoshop has showed no problems so far and seems to work just fine.
I have tried uninstall and reinstall. I've get the same results.
Does anyone know what's causing this?

    Hi,
    You can try this solution.
    1. To solve this issue you need to create a new Admin account for your MAC.
    2. Log-in to your new Admin account launch the software.
    3. Close the software, navigate to MAC HD > Users > New Admin( What ever name you have given it) > Library > Preferences.
    4. You will find the Adobe Illustrator CS5 setting  folder, copy the folder to your MAC HD.
    5. Log-in to your old account and replace the Adobe Illustrator CS5 setting from the same location with the New Admin account's folder which you have copied to your         MAC HD.
    6. Launch the software to check if it works.
    For InDesign CS5.
    1. To solve this issue you need to create a new Admin account for your MAC.
    2. Log-in to your new Admin account launch the software.
    3. Close the software, navigate to MAC HD > Users > New Admin( What ever name you have given it) > Library > Preferences.

Then you can delete the new Admin account.
    Please do reply.
    Hope it works.

  • File Exchange between Illustrator CS5 and Freehand 10?

    Hello everyone,
I'm working with Illustrator CS5 on MacOS X Version 10.6.4.
I'd like to exchange Files with a colleague, who uses Freehand 10 on Mac OS X Version 10.4.11.
Is that possible? In both directions? Will I have to convert the files to older Versions?
I've already found out that I can open Fh 7 Files in Illustrator CS5.
I'd be glad to get an answer soon.
    Birgit

You can even open FreeHand10 files in Illustrator. The other way round it's difficult. FreeHand could open AI7-files, only: you cannot save them. So you would have to save down to AI3 (not: CS3). You'll loose about anything apart from simple paths, strokes and fills that way, let alone transparency. Clearly this workflow is not advisable at all.
Either one of you uses a different software or you simply don't exchange files back and forth.

  • ILLUSTRATOR CS5 AND INDESIGN CS5

    Well...
I've been looking the new CS5 programs. It's time to change. Now, Illustrator artboards (pages) can be rearranged and named. You can paste a objet in multiple artboards and they preserve their relative location in the artboards too (imagine this feature with titles, ornaments in a long document, page numbers, etc.)
You can draw INSIDE and object. It has perspective grid (exactly like FreeHand)…
And at last, but no at least, InDesign CS5 has pages with multiple sizes.
    What do you think?

First off, I am a staunch advocate of FreeHand and want to see it's future continue, as a majority of users here do. So to see Illustrator CS5 merge so many cool features from FreeHand is a good thing!  AI's new perspective grid, multi-sized/arranged pages, text improvements for long docs, better paste inside, etc. are all from FreeHand MX and it takes Illustrator closer to parity with it.  If I had the system requirements to run this version, I would definitely upgrade as I see no conflict with having both Illustrator and FreeHand on my system.
I do have trouble with the comment, "It's time to change." I think the mistake many FreeHand (and Illustrator) users make is that one is better than the other and thus only one should exist. Even Adobe thinks this. In fact, Illustrator has strengths in its widespread feature set (much like Photoshop) whereas FreeHand has it's strength in it's speed, lightweight and intuitive interface. If I want to touch up a JPEG, do I open up Photoshop or a quick application like Preview or Cocopad? If I want to draw quick vector elements, do I open up Illustrator or the speedier FreeHand? If I am on a time limit, I know which application is best just as I know which I'd use to create 3D extrusion and realistic effects. Do you see why both serve an important  purpose?
The new Illustrator CS5 is highly worthy and Sr. Mgr. David Macy deserves kudos for bringing more FreeHand features into it. He's doing the right thing. But crushing FreeHand in order to boost AI's prominance is a very poor management choice. Adobe is now crying foul over Flash being disregarded by Apple, which is the ultimate irony to the same treatment they have foisted on FreeHand, GoLive and even PageMaker users. Adobe management can't point fingers when they have been doing the same thing to their user base.
Adobe, if you're reading this, release FreeHand to open-source or sell it off (once you've gotten what you want from it). But don't sit on it all these years and expect us to feel sorry that Flash isn't being given a fair shake! You are just playing a victim to your own policies.

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro won't edit document created by Illustrator 2 and saved as PDF

I've tried multiple things, but can't get Acrobat Pro to edit text within a PDF file which was created by Illustrator cs2 "Accumulated text within the attempted selection area is rotated other than horizontal or vertical.  Touchup cannot create a text selection area.".   I've searched google, read help....
Fix was to download NitroPDF.   It quickly and easily edited the text.   So why won't Adobe do it...

The same thing happens with pdf files that are not zip files even if saved from Acrobat Pro on my computer.
