Applescript: Need help to write a script that inputs an excel formula into multiple workbooks.

Don't know if I can do this with automator or if I need to write a scipt I have a folder which contains probably 20 excel workbooks and each workbook needs the formula "=CONCATENATE(E17, " ",TEXT(N11, "mm-dd-yy"))" into cell T18 in every sheet of each workbook. Any ideas?

well, the operative line is this:
                              set formula of cell "T18" to "=CONCATENATE(E17, \" \",TEXT(N11, \"mm-dd-yy\"))"
you just need to loop through the workbooks and worksheets and apply it to each.  I think you can figure that out.

    Can anyone help me write a script that would click "get info" and then "enter" on each movie in my itunes library? I am asking because my itunes 11 repeatedly loses the artwork to my movies in my itunes library. I can restore the artwork (and make my apple tv see the movie exists as well) by going into the movie library and clicking on each movie by hand, slecting get info, and then selecting enter. Now doing this 10 times in 20 days was fun and all BUT I would really like to automate the process so everytime itunes screws it up I can fix it easier.
    I saw this example of an itunes script that restores artwork for music
    tell application "iTunes" set theSelection to selection repeat with i from 1 to count of theSelection tell (item i of theSelection) set artworkCount to count of artwork repeat artworkCount times set theArtwork to data of artwork 1 delete artwork 1 set data of artwork artworkCount to theArtwork end repeat end tell end repeat end tell
    but I need to tweak this to fit my needs for simply clicking the "get info" button and "enter" in the movie library rather than all the stuff this guy has listed. Any ideas or help on writing this? Thanks.

  • Need help - I2C write/read with TAOS TCS3414 light sensor using USB-8451

    Hello, I'm new to labview and need help setting up a vi that will allow me to communicate with a digital light sensor (TAOS TCS3414) using a USB-8451. I need to use the sensor to measure light from a light source that I designed and built as part of a project im working on. I've tried looking at several labview I2C exampled but find them to be very confusing. I've used an arduino to interface with the sensor successfully but need to use labview and dont understand how to write the program. The actions are simple; I need initialize the sensor with a simple command and then request data from 8 data registers and then read that data. The data will then be used in further calculations. The portion i need help with is writing and reading from the sensor. I've attached the datasheet for the sensor as a guide. I can also provide the arduino code that i use to read data from the sensor if that would help.
    Pleae keep in mind that i am completely new to labVIEW. I really do want to learn from this but need quick results so the more help the better. It would greately appreciate any help or explaination.

    I need help in resolving a problem that prevents me from accessing the iTunes store.  Message reads " iTunes cannot contact the iTunes store" and also says that my laptop is no longer authorized to access my account.  Help!

    Go up to the top of your screen on iTunes and click on 'Store'.  Then go down to 'Authorize This Computer'.  That should cover part of it unless you've already authorized a bunch of other computers to use your account.  If that's the case, you'll have to go to one of those computers and click the button just below it to 'deauthorize your account' from that computer.  If you're not able to access the store, check your internet connection to make sure you are connected.  Hope this helps.. good luck!

  • I need help with a PDF file that is an image, the "Read Out Loud' option does not work, please help!

    I need help with a PDF file that is an image, the "Read Out Loud' option does not work, please help!

    You mean an image such as a scanned document?
    If that is the case, the file doesn't contain any text for Reader Out Loud to read. In order to fix that, you would need an application such as Adobe Acrobat that does Optical Character Recognition to convert the images to actual text.
    You can also try to export the file as a Word document or something else using ExportPDF which I believe offers OCR and is cheaper than Acrobat.

  • HT1349 I need help finding an old library that itunes states my ipod is already linked to

    I need help finding an old library that it states my ipod is already linked to.  My computer recently had a terrible virus and needed to be wiped clean.  I had to redownload itunes and I bought several songs.  I want to add them to my old library because I had several cd's that I had uploaded.  Is there a way to find that old library and combine them without having to erase all the songs that are currently on my ipod???  Thanks

    Umm.  If you wiped the hard drive, then all old libraries are gone unless you have them on backup.

  • Need help to modify vb script used in XP for Windows 7

    Can somebody help me in modifying scripts that were used for Windows XP, to run on Windows 7.
    My friend advised me to change it to .ps1, but still some flaws..
    Cscript \\nologo ????  is used for what purpose ?

    Almost all VBScripts written to work in Windows XP will also work for Windows 7, so there's not much to modify (unless you have specific examples of scripts not working).
    Having said that, PowerShell is the future! It takes a bit more than to just change the file extension to .ps1 though (this may be why your scripts aren't working!).

  • Need help with Java app for user input 5 numbers, remove dups, etc.

    I'm new to Java (only a few weeks under my belt) and struggling with an application. The project is to write an app that inputs 5 numbers between 10 and 100, not allowing duplicates, and displaying each correct number entered, using the smallest possible array to solve the problem. Output example:
    Please enter a number: 45
    Number stored.
    45
    Please enter a number: 54
    Number stored.
    45 54
    Please enter a number: 33
    Number stored.
    45 54 33
    etc.
    I've been working on this project for days, re-read the book chapter multiple times (unfortunately, the book doesn't have this type of problem as an example to steer you in the relatively general direction) and am proud that I've gotten this far. My problems are 1) I can only get one item number to input rather than a running list of the 5 values, 2) I can't figure out how to check for duplicate numbers. Any help is appreciated.
    My code is as follows:
    import java.util.Scanner; // program uses class Scanner
    public class Array
         public static void main( String args[] )
          // create Scanner to obtain input from command window
              Scanner input = new Scanner( System.in);
          // declare variables
             int array[] = new int[ 5 ]; // declare array named array
             int inputNumbers = 0; // numbers entered
          while( inputNumbers < array.length )
              // prompt for user to input a number
                System.out.print( "Please enter a number: " );
                      int numberInput = input.nextInt();
              // validate the input
                 if (numberInput >=10 && numberInput <=100)
                       System.out.println("Number stored.");
                     else
                       System.out.println("Invalid number.  Please enter a number within range.");
              // checks to see if this number already exists
                    boolean number = false;
              // display array values
              for ( int counter = 0; counter < array.length; counter++ )
                 array[ counter ] = numberInput;
              // display array values
                 System.out.printf( "%d\n", array[ inputNumbers ] );
                   // increment number of entered numbers
                inputNumbers++;
    } // end close Array

    Yikes, there is a much better way to go about this that is probably within what you have already learned, but since you are a student and this is how you started, let's just concentrate on fixing what you got.
    First, as already noted by another poster, your formatting is really bad. Formatting is really important because it makes the code much more readable for you and anyone who comes along to help you or use your code. And I second that posters comment that brackets should always be used, especially for beginner programmers. Unfortunately beginner programmers often get stuck thinking that less lines of code equals better program, this is not true; even though better programmers often use far less lines of code.
                             // validate the input
       if (numberInput >=10 && numberInput <=100)
              System.out.println("Number stored.");
      else
                   System.out.println("Invalid number.  Please enter a number within range."); Note the above as you have it.
                         // validate the input
                         if (numberInput >=10 && numberInput <=100)
                              System.out.println("Number stored.");
                         else
                              System.out.println("Invalid number.  Please enter a number within range."); Note how much more readable just correct indentation makes.
                         // validate the input
                         if (numberInput >=10 && numberInput <=100) {
                              System.out.println("Number stored.");
                         else {
                              System.out.println("Invalid number.  Please enter a number within range.");
                         } Note how it should be coded for a beginner coder.
    Now that it is readable, exam your code and think about what you are doing here. Do you really want to print "Number Stored" before you checked to ensure it is not a dupe? That could lead to some really confused and frustrated users, and since the main user of your program will be your teacher, that could be unhealthy for your GPA.
    Since I am not here to do your homework for you, I will just give you some advice, you only need one if statement to do this correctly, you must drop the else and fix the if. I tell you this, because as a former educator i know the first thing running through beginners minds in this situation is to just make the if statement empty, but this is a big no no and even if you do trick it into working your teacher will not be fooled nor impressed and again your GPA will suffer.
    As for the rest, you do need a for loop inside your while loop, but not where or how you have it. Inside the while loop the for loop should be used for checking for dupes, not for overwriting every entry in the array as you currently have it set up to do. And certainly not for printing every element of the array each time a new element is added as your comments lead me to suspect you were trying to do, that would get real annoying really fast again resulting in abuse of your GPA. Printing the array should be in its own for loop after the while loop, or even better in its own method.
    As for how to check for dupes, well, you obviously at least somewhat understand loops and if statements, thus you have all the tools needed, so where is the problem?

  • Need help making a simple script for my webcam

    Hey everyone, fairly new to applescript programming. I just bought a usb camera for my macbook because I use it for video conferencing/playing around, and it is better quality than the built in isight. However, in order to use this camera I need to use drivers from a program called camTwist. This being said camTwist needs to be opened first and the usb camera must be selected from camTwist Step 1 list in order for any other application to use the camera. I just want to make a simple program that would open camTwist first, then select "webcam" from the list (double click it like I always have to in order to select it) in order to activate the driver, and then open photo booth which would then be using the camTwist driver in order to take pictures.
    I made a crude program but it does not automatically select "webcam" from the Step 1 list in camTwist:
    tell application "CamTwist" to activate
    delay 10
    tell application "Photo Booth" to activate
    that’s basically it. I set the delay to 10 seconds so that when camTwists boots up first I can manually select my webcam. HOWEVER, I would like to make a script that would boot up CamTwist first, select my webcam from the list automatically, and then open Photo Booth with the CamTwist webcam driver already selected.
    Don't know much about applescript so any help to make a working script to solve my problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Solved my problem but now I need help with something else! First I used CamTwist user options to create user defined hot keys with the specific purpose to load the webcam. I chose Command+B. I tested it out in CamTwist and it worked. The program follows a logical order from there. First it loads CamTwist, then after a short delay it presses the hot keys in order to load the webcam from the video source list, then another short delay and Photo Booth is opened with the driver loaded from camTwist. Everything works Perfect! Here's the code:
    tell application "System Events"
    tell application "CamTwist" to activate
    delay 0.5
    --Press command+b which is a user defined hot key to load webcam
    key code 11 using command down
    end tell
    delay 0.5
    tell application "Photo Booth" to activate
    My Next question is, would it be possible with this same script to have both applications quit together. For example I always quit Photo Booth first, so when I quit photo booth is there a way to make CamTwist also quit and keep everything within the same script? Please let me know. This forum has been very helpful and lead me to a solution to my problem! Hoping I can solve this next problem as well! Thanks everyone.

  • Need help writing and Apple Script

    I've never written an apple script before so I need the entire tutorial for dummies. Basically, I am annoyed with the fact that Microsoft Word 08 keeps opening a new document at 100% zoom when I want it to open at "page width." How do I write a script for that?

    You don't need an Applescript. Open the New Document template, resize as you like then save the template.

  • I need help making a backup script

    I'm trying to create this full system backup script that I plan to run manually. I have some commands to compress and extract my root directory and everything in it, but they're not complete because there are a few other features I would like to have. The problem is that I have no idea how to implement these specific features, and my googling of bash scripting documentation only left me confused and at square 1. This is what I have so far (just commands I can run in the terminal):
    To compress:
    sudo tar -cpf ~/archive.tar.gz / --exclude=/proc
    To extract & restore:
    sudo tar -xpf /home/agi/archive.tar.gz -C /
    I want this script to:
    1. allows me to run as
    sh ~/.bin/backup.sh [directory to back up]
    What I mean is there should be some sort of parameter in the script so that when I run it, I can choose whatever directory I want to compress rather than just be limited to just /.
    2. puts finished .tar.gz in my home directory (I plan to transfer the archive to external media or online later; this gives me the freedom to not need to have a specific drive connected to run the script). I already have this in the commands, but I just wanted to point out that this is important.
    3. names finished .tar.gz DD-MM-YY-backup.tar.gz where DD is day, MM is month, YY is year.
    4. the "sudo" part works correctly. That is, the script, when run, asks for a password and can be granted root permissions (or is granted root permissions in some other way) so that I can back up all parts of my system without these sorts of errors.
    5. shows some sort of progress indicator. Either a progress bar, shows the tar program output, or something that gives me an indication that the script is working and perhaps how long it will take. This one is really optional, for as long as the process is working properly then I'm ok. But if it is possible and not ridiculously complicated or difficult, it would be very nice.

    What I mean is there should be some sort of parameter in the script so that when I run it, I can choose whatever directory I want to compress rather than just be limited to just /.
    On my backup script, I specify $* which should accept any arguments passed to the script.. ex: $ ./backup.sh /source/folder /source/folder2.
    in the script:
    #!/bin/sh
    tar -cpf $HOME/$(date +%d%m%Y)-backup.tar.gz $* --exclude=/proc
    2. puts finished .tar.gz in my home directory (I plan to transfer the archive to external media or online later; this gives me the freedom to not need to have a specific drive connected to run the script). I already have this in the commands, but I just wanted to point out that this is important.
    In the above script, that is what the ~ or $HOME should do..
    3. names finished .tar.gz DD-MM-YY-backup.tar.gz where DD is day, MM is month, YY is year.
    Same thing, the above script should do the trick, you might want to modify the date parameters (check the date manual)
    4. the "sudo" part works correctly. That is, the script, when run, asks for a password and can be granted root permissions (or is granted root permissions in some other way) so that I can back up all parts of my system without these sorts of errors.
    You could put something to prevent the script from running unless you are root, or you could have it prompt for a password and use sudo within the script. I would recommend the first. Here is a code snippet:
    #Check for root
    if [ $(whoami) != "root" ]; then
    echo "Error: You cannot perform this operation unless you are root"
    exit 1
    fi
    5. shows some sort of progress indicator. Either a progress bar, shows the tar program output, or something that gives me an indication that the script is working and perhaps how long it will take. This one is really optional, for as long as the process is working properly then I'm ok. But if it is possible and not ridiculously complicated or difficult, it would be very nice.
    You might be able to use a similar program to tar, but with progress. Maybe someone else could shed some light here..
    Hope this helps...

  • Need Help Writing a Shell Script

    Basically I'm writing a script that opens TextEdit so I can open it from the Terminal. I also want it to run in the background so I can continue using the Terminal without having to quit TextEdit first. So far I've figured out two ways of doing this, and neither one does exactly what I want it to do. Here's the first one I tried:
    /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit $@ &
    The problem with this is that if TextEdit is already running, it opens a new instance of it to open the files, and it doesn't bring the app into focus when I run it. So I decided to try this:
    open -a "TextEdit" $@ &
    This way all files open in the same instance of TextEdit and it brings the app to the front, but it won't let me save anything I don't have write privileges for, even if I run it with sudo. I Googled it and apparently what happens is it runs "open" as root but runs the actual application that I'm opening as the current user.
    So basically what I need to know is if there's a way of doing this that will congregate all files into the same instance of TextEdit and bring the app to the front when I launch it, but still let me run it as root with sudo. If not, is there at least a way to check if TextEdit is running and throw an error if it is?

    #!/usr/bin/env bash
    if ps ax | grep '[T]extEdit'; then
    echo "TextEdit is already running!"
    else
    /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit &
    fi
    open -a TextEdit "$@"
    osascript -e 'tell application "TextEdit" to activate'
    Example:
    your.script "text file.txt"
    NOTE 1: When posting code to this forum, enclose your code in
    ...your code goes here...
    This will make sure that all your indentation and other meta-characters that might get interpreted by the forum code will be left alone.
    NOTE 2: The $@ will ONLY preserve quoted strings as a single argument if it is specified as "$@". That is to say it MUST be inside a pair fo double-quotes. Otherwise it is the same as $* The missing ".." are what messed up your ability to treat a file with space as a single argument. ALSO NOTE, I specified the file on the command line inside quotes (could be single or double), or you could use  if you desire.
    NOTE 2 and a half:
    If you DO NOT want to put quotes around the space filled filename when invoking your script, you could change your "$@" to "$*"
    open -a TextEdit "$*"
    The difference is that using "$@" will allow specifying several filenames on the command line and TextEdit will open all of them at once. The use of "$*" means you can only open 1 file per use of your script. Not a big deal, but I figured you should know the options available to you.
    NOTE 3: I've simplified your script.
    I do not know why you decided that if you are root you wanted to use sudo, since sudo gives normal users root privileges, and root already has root privileges.
    Actually based on earlier exchanges, I would have thought that you wanted to start TextEdit using sudo, unless it was already running:
    sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit &
    so that you had root privileges allowing you to write files in places you were normally not allowed. Then again, maybe I was reading the earlier posting wrong (won't be the first time ).
    NOTE 4: The use of
    if [ "$textedit" > /dev/null ]; then
    is just plain wierd This translates to the command:
    test "$textedit" >/dev/null
    which redirects standard output into /dev/null, so the actually command looks like
    test "$textedit"
    which will essentially return TRUE if $textedit has a string in it, and FALSE if $textedit is empty.
    I decided to just use the completion status of the grep command as a way to decide if TextEdit was running on not.
    NOTE 5: I simplified the ps|grep|grep command with a trick I learned several years ago. The '[T]extEdit' regular expression exactly matchs TextEdit, except that it DOES NOT match a ps line that has '[T]extEdit'. So I can get rid of one grep command because it will never match the grep command in the ps output.
    NOTE 6: I moved the open and osascript commands outside the if structure, as I assumed you wanted osascript to bring TextEdit to the foreground regardless of whether it was already running or not, and the open command was identical for both halfs of the if structure. If this is a bad assumption, feel free do put it back inside the if structure.
